          Book Description

Entrepreneurs, managers, parents, teachers, and-at some point-everyone have to explain goals and intentions to another person in order to enlist help in achieving them. Too often, those brilliant explanations fall on seemingly deaf ears. They just don't get it! Instead of blaming them, this book counsels readers to look within, and shows that "their" problem is often "our" problem. Using the popular parable format, and illustrated with clever line drawings, They Just Don't Get It! gives knowledgeable, down-to-earth behavioral suggestions for opening communication, achieving goals, and building teams. Offering insight into the reasons ideas aren't implemented in an expected manner, the book provides the reader with personal insight into how to become a better communicator of ideas and an inspired motivator of people, both personally and professionally. Includes black-and-white illustrations throughout.

5 out of 5 stars Big messages in an easy to read book.......2006-10-10

This is a fun and easy to read book about breaking down resistance in corporate settings. Even better, its lessons can be applied just as well in relationships, parenting, etc. For all of the times I've been frustrated that someone wasn't seeing things my way, I wish that I had known the five simple keys presented in this book to help me change resistance into understanding. This easy to read parable will leave you with easy to remember and easy to perform steps to reduce the resistance in your life.

5 out of 5 stars Life is too short not to learn with fun.......2006-09-20

Very clever, different and fun! The book is quick and entertaining to read.
Although I was initially a little skeptical about reading a business parable in a graphic novel format, my questions were erased in the first page. The content - the keys for changing resistance into understanding - is sound. The delivery kept me reading and enjoying the lessons.

Maybe more learning should be this palatable.

5 out of 5 stars Easy Read, Really Useful Book on Communications.......2006-06-07

I like They Just Don't Get It a lot! Four reasons: it's short and took 45 minutes to read; it presents practical things you can try out to see how they work; it doesn't take itself so seriously that it can't allow amusing pictures to illustrate its points; and, maybe this is the best reason of all, it caused me to rethink and wonder about good communications between people long after I shelved the book.

No doubt, a short, illustrated book with easy-to-test principles isn't everybody's cup of tea. But, I've been testing the principles daily and I think the authors are onto something valuable and very practical. We're quick to blame the other party when our discussions turn sour, so when we turn a critical eye to our own role, (a lesson from the book,) I've learned a bunch about how to improve discussions. This book helped me get a handle on my own role. Great stuff.

4 out of 5 stars They Just Don't Get It fosters improved communication and understanding........2006-04-05

While on a plane reading They Just Don't Get It, the passenger next to me became quite interested in the title. She quickly launched into telling me that when she asks her husband to help her bring in the groceries, he ignores her or complains. She was frustrated because she does most of the housework and wants him to help her with just one home task -- but he doesn't get it. How often do we come across friends, neighbors, colleagues, and family members that seem to be on another planet? But they aren't...

While initially I felt this fable was quite simplistic, I realized later it had stuck with me in a strong and positive way. It came immediately to mind as I had a conversation with a prickly staff member who often sees things completely differently than the way I do. The wisdom of Leslie's book came to me as this staff member became annoyed with me. I felt myself tighten and getting annoyed in response. But I remembered the message of this book, and focused on staying relaxed and just listening. From then on the conversation shifted, flowing easily without me remaining tense or annoyed. I was more interested in what my employee said, able to compliment her on her positive areas and converse openly about the areas where we differed.

Teams and departments could use this book to foster improved communication, planning, and understanding. I've given it to a non-profit Director to read and share with her team. I applaud Leslie's efforts to make the workplace better. The skills she teaches and reminds us about also benefit our everyday relationships as well; what a gift.

          5 out of 5 stars A year-round present.......2006-02-14

This is a deceptive little book. Beyond the light text and funny illustrations, it has a serious message that is difficult to convey and harder to practice-the importance of listening to and learning from others.
Managers and human resources personnel deserve to have a copy of their own. They Just Don't Get It will make a nice gift year round.

          Book Description

Resistance and Persuasion is the first book to analyze the nature of resistance and demonstrate how it can be reduced, overcome, or used to promote persuasion. By examining resistance, and providing strategies for overcoming it, this new book generates insight into new facets of influence and persuasion. With contributions from the leaders in the field, this book presents original ideas and research that demonstrate how understanding resistance can improve persuasion, compliance, and social influence. Many of the authors present their research for the first time. Four faces of resistance are identified: reactance, distrust, scrutiny, and inertia. The concluding chapter summarizes the book's theoretical contributions and establishes a resistance-based research agenda for persuasion and attitude change. This new book helps to establish resistance as a legitimate sub-field of persuasion that is equal in force to influence.

Resistance and Persuasion offers many new revelations about persuasion:

*Acknowledging resistance helps to reduce it.

*Raising reactance makes a strong message more persuasive.

*Putting arguments into a narrative increases their influence.

*Identifying illegitimate sources of information strengthens the influence of legitimate sources.

*Looking ahead reduces resistance to persuasive attempts.

This volume will appeal to researchers and students from a variety of disciplines including social, cognitive, and health psychology, communication, marketing, political science, journalism, and education.

In 2006 I was privileged enough to see Dr. Knowles as a conference i was attending. Each of the 3 days Dr. Knowles was given a hour in which to take the stage and to train us on the subject of this book. (Omega Strategies)

In seeing Dr. Knowles Live, reading his book and watching his brilliant DVD set I can only promote and encourage anyone who has to persuade, influence or sell to do the same.

In this book you will find the keys that other authors have either failed to noticed or simply didn't know about.

The OMEGA strategies are those in which you reduce the resistance to say no, where as more traditional methods which are widely known and taught are ALPHA strategies which increase the offer to gain a yes.

Please promise yourself you will take the time to purchase this book, utilise the information and comment with a review what you thought.

"A brilliant and genius piece of work!" Thank you Dr. Knowles.

4 out of 5 stars Great Stuff if You Can Hang in There.......2006-09-23

This book is fantastic, and, this book will take some serious dedication for many. This book is a very academic read. If I'm not mistaken, I think it is actually used as a college textbook for a psychology course. Okay, now that you have my disclaimer, let me say this: This is the kind of research material that Kevin Hogan pours through tomake his incredible Science of Influence Products from. Why? Because this is the stuff that's been proven to work, tested in University studies, etc. You will learn methods you can use with anyone; your spouse, kids, clients and more. And talk about covert hypnosis....WOW! This is a MUST HAVE for any serious student of persuasion.

5 out of 5 stars The Best Book On Resistance Available.......2006-02-25

Put quite simply there is not a better book available today on the topic of resistance. Dr. Knowles does a wonderful job of breaking down the different types of resistance and showing which strategies overcame or created less resistance.

What is really like about this book is that it is based on hard science and real studies, not hypothetical ideas of what could or should happen.

This book is a must for anyone serious about persuasion, sales, marketing, advertising, or negotiating.

I have followed the work of Linn/Knowles for some time now. An admiring fan. When I heard Resistance and Persuasion was going to be released I was ecstatic. This is the finest academic book written about persuasion in 20 years. It will become an indispensable classic in short time. The editor/authors collect the best of current research delving deep into resistance and the Omega Strategies that will overcome it.

If you're in college and get to have college credit for learning this you are fortunate indeed. Enjoy. There isn't better at the University Book Store.

                Book Description

This book will show you how anyone can be persuaded to do anything.
Geoff Burch has written a book that will change almost everything you ever believed about business and selling. Combining the quick wit of a stand up comedian with the serious thoughtfulness of a psychoanalyst, he explains the value and power of persuasion - a verbal martial art that, if used correctly will always give you the outcome you desire in your business dealings.
Resistance is Useless will show you how to:
                * Change anyone's opinion on any subject.
                * Transform a lynch mob into your most devout supporters.
                * Avoid wasting thousands of pounds on customer care while your accounts department is threatening to pulp your customer's fingers with a hammer.
                * Understand how a perfect product demonstration can get you hurled into the street by security.
                * Sell tanks to Genghis khan.

For a book about persuasion it is too basic -- even for one that is ten years old. Furthermore, the author's style ist to use somewhat humorous but long-winded stories, which makes it for hurried readers looking for content definitively unbearable.

                  Description:
Counterarguing persuasive messages requires active control processes (e.g., generation and application of contradictory information) similar to those involved in other forms of self-regulation. Prior research has indicated that self-regulation ability is a finite resource subject to temporary depletion with use, and so engaging in self-regulatory tasks could impair individuals' ability to subsequently counterargue. Participants completed an initial task designed to deplete or not deplete their regulatory resources. Following the manipulation, participants read a message supporting a counterattitudinal policy. Results indicated that prior self-regulation reduced subsequent resistance, primarily when the message arguments were specious. Counterargument appears to be a self-regulatory process that can be undermined when self-regulatory resources have previously been diminished.

                          Book Description

A scientific consensus is emerging that rising atmospheric concentrations of greenhouse gases are gradually changing the Earth's climate, although the magnitude, timing, and effects of the alteration remain very uncertain. The prospect of long-term climate change raises a variety of domestic and international economic policy issues on which there is little accord. Considerable disagreement exists about whether to control greenhouse gas emissions, and if so, how and by how much; and whether to coordinate climate-related policies at the international level, and if so, through what mechanisms.

This Congressional Budget Office (CBO) study presents an overview of issues related to climate change, focusing primarily on its economic aspects. The study draws from numerous published sources to summarize the current state of climate science and provide a conceptual framework for addressing climate change as an economic problem. It also examines public policy options and discusses the potential complications and benefits of international coordination. In keeping with CBO's mandate to provide impartial analysis, the study makes no recommendations.

                                    Book Description

This book integrates new political and economic elements into the analysis of monetary policy credibility and central bank independence. The author considers imperfect monetary control, rational voters, distributional issues and uncertainty about future policy objectives in his welfare analysis of central banking. The role played by the different institutional elements that contribute to the making of an independent central bank is also assessed. A distinction is made between central bank independence and targets offering new insights into how a more inflation averse monetary policy may actually be achieved. Finally, explanations for the variation of central bank independence and conservatism across different countries are provided. This book will appeal to researchers, academics and policy makers in the fields of monetary policy, financial economics, money and banking and political economy.
