Description:
In order to facilitate a number of calculations needed to quantify effectiveness of off-site protective actions for various emergency scenarios for emergency planning of nuclear facilities, we developed a simplified simulation method for selecting the most effective protective action among candidates of action. The protective actions considered are sheltering in houses, sheltering in public concrete building, evacuation, and iodine prophylaxis. The method has functions of (1) simulating the movement of members of the public under protective actions and calculating avertable dose by protective actions in short computing time, and (2) selecting the most effective protective action for divided areas around a nuclear site. To achieve short computing time in function (1), we applied a multivariate analysis method by using sample data obtained from results calculated with a program for simulating the movement of members of the public under protective actions with a detailed mathematical model that requires long computing time. As to function (2), we focused on net benefit, namely avertable dose minus an intervention level, of a protective action. Intervention levels used are those that IAEA proposed based on justification and optimization of protective actions by taking account of benefit and disadvantage due to protective actions. Analysis results by the simplified simulation method showed good agreement with those by the detailed simulation program. Application of the simplified method to a model nuclear site demonstrated that the method was useful as it provided the most effective protective action area depending on source terms, meteorological conditions, and so on.

To bad you missed the exhibit.............1998-01-01
This book takes you on a jouney of war photography from the Crimea Pennunsula to modern times. The most striking photograph to me was actually one with no people in it. Ever read the famous poem on the Charge of the Light Brigade, one picture is the image of the Valley of Death. It looks like a peaceful barren rocky valley till you realize all the rocks are perfectly round cannon shot.

The first section covers works on economic methodology while Part Two deals with works on the philosophy of science. The inclusion of works by philosophers of science reflects the prevalence of references to their works both in contemporary economic literature and throughout the period covered. Many of the entries are annotated, including the classics in economic methodology, almost all of the books, and general works in the philosophy of science section. All other sections include an introduction to the topic and the articles listed under that heading. By collecting these works together in one source for the first time, compiler Deborah Redman has performed a major service for students, researchers, and scholars of economics, as well as interested philosophers and other social scientists. Part One, on methodology, is divided into twenty-five sections devoted to such issues as the Friedman controversy, the is-ought dichotomy, the role of ethics and values in economics, the Cambridge controversy, and more. Individual economists like Samuelson and Friedman, who have had a major influence on the discipline, are treated in separate categories. In addition, individual sections address quantification, theory, econometrics, rationality, and the positions of the Austrians, the new group of rhetoricians, the institutionalists, and others. Part Two begins by providing introductory texts and background sources for those with little prior exposure to works in the philosophy of science. The remaining eleven sections are organized around the philosophies of science that economists have incorporated into their economic philosophies. Hence works by and on Karl Popper, Thomas Kuhn, Imre Lakatos, Paul Feyerabend, and the German structuralists appear as categories. Additional sections cover holism and the Duhem thesis, the relationship between the history and philosophy of science, and miscellaneous works. Author and subject indexes complete the volume.

There's more to communications than words, and according to Colleen McKenna you'll have to master a diverse set of self-expression skills if you want to succeed in business. In her book, McKenna covers diverse topics ranging from speaking, writing and listening, to asserting yourself, solving problems and dealing with put-downs. The impressive breadth of the book is also its greatest weakness, in that with so much ground to cover, McKenna is in no position to delve deeply into any one point. As a result, the chapters are lacking in detail. However, each section does provide a wonderful introduction to issues like the problems of communicating with members of the opposite sex and the best ways to prepare for a public speaking engagement.
