In the context of architecture sustainability implies the use of intelligent technology, innovative construction methods, ecologically friendly materials and use of environmentally-friendly energy resources. This book begins with an overview of the various approaches and developments in sustainable architecture, followed by an in-depth section on urbanism looking at several European towns. In the third section the technologies, materials and methods of ecological architecture are examined. Concluding the volume are 23 sophisticated and innovative European case studies. The author and architect Dominique Gauzin-Müller has specialised on energy and environmental issues and ecological architecture for over 15 years.

In this major contribution to an understanding of the development of Ottoman architecture, Godfrey Goodwin focuses on the work of one of the greatest sixteenth-century architects, Sinan Abdulmennan, showing how he revolutionized inherited Ottoman building methods, a tradition based on structure by an awareness of the psychology of space.
Until Sinan, Ottoman architecture had been a reading of parts. He broke down the distinct forms that had created a certain rigidity, thus freeing interior space and interior form simultaneously.
Underlying his architectural concepts are the mathematical theories and practices of Classical Greece. Sinan shared these ideals of proportion and balance with builders in the West indeed; the author argues that the work of Sinan and that of Bramante and Palladio must be seen as part of the same intellectual revolution.
This is not a life of Sinanvery few biographical materials are available. Goodwin nevertheless shows the importance of the architect's long years in the army and his experience of bridges, siege-works, fortifications, and the behaviour of stone and masonry before he was appointed Royal Architect in 1538.
Goodwin bases his analysis on a detailed comparative study of certain of Sinan's buildings, the supreme example being the imaginative leap represented by the mosque of Selim ll at Edirne, second capital of the Ottoman Empire.
Of particular importance are the chapters on light and space; the dome, the minaret and the apsidal form; decoration and tiles.
The text is illustrated by photographs, plans and elevations of many of Sinan's works ranging from the grandiose Suleymaniye complex in Istanbul to the experimental Kilic Ali Pasha mosque. Of outstanding interest are the plates by the nineteenth-century German architect Gurlitt, many of which show features before later restoration.

EXCELLENT book from a bygone era.......2000-12-06
Born in the 1800's, Mr. Woodcock relates his experiences from 50 years in the "tall timber". Ahead of his time, he expounds on the wisdom of closed seasons and game management. If you enjoy hunting; if you daydream of life in the mountains; this is a MUST read! In his folksy 'down home' way, he tells story after story of the rugged life in the mountains of Pennsylvania, as well as hunts in the west and south. If your son (or daughter) is new to hunting, GET THEM THIS BOOK! READ IT YOURSELF! Oh, to have been born in that long ago, forgotten era! Being from Pennsylvania myself, this has long been one of my favorite outdoor books, as I am sure it will be for you.

Sharp criticism was recently focused on Switzerland for its doings during World War II and the Swiss banks' policies with respect to dormant assets belonging to victims of the Holocaust, in a process that lasted more than two years, from spring 1996 to fall 1998. This crisis finally came to an end when an overall settlement was reached under which the foremost Swiss banks agreed to pay $1.25 billion to the Jewish organisations and Holocaust victims who had taken up legal action before the American courts.
The aim of this book is to lay bare the mechanics of this crisis that so violently shook Switzerland and harmed its international image. It endeavours to show how and why organisations and governments heaped attack on Switzerland. The declared and perfectly legitimate cause of the crisis was that of seeing justice for the victims of the Holocaust. Behind that lay a hidden agenda only a closer look can bring to light.

Every year the Dept. of Labor statistic of average wages, male vs female, is touted, falsely, as evidence of wage discrimination. But average pay is a number clouded by the fact that a majority of women still choose jobs with flexibility for attending to family. The average pay statistic makes no attempt at a fair comparison--like job to like job. This book, written by women, does the math and proves that when you compare apples to apples, there is no signifcant gender difference in compensation.
I've been in corporate finance for 35 years, and the real numbers never have supported the nonsesnse reported in the media. No large employer in its right mind would discrimminate in this way. If women were only paid 75% of what men make, there'd be massive lawsuits, and HR manager firings would be in order. Thanks largely to a healthy system of tort laws, during my career corporate management has fought like hell to make sure women are treated fairly. The US is a leader in the industrial world in this effort.
But every year, we'll hear average pay touted as though no progress has been made in the past 40 years. Feminist organizations will rail about the "inequality", and make themselves look foolish..., feeding the popular conception of the math-challenged female.
Doctrinaire rubbish.......2006-03-01
Don't fall for this. The authors are conservative propagandists who engage in the kind of fake scholarship that the American Enterprise Institute and its ilk specializes in. Remember when you were first learning to write a term paper and the teacher said "don't make the facts fit your argument; your argument has to rest on the facts"? Well the authors were busy running for class president and missed that little lesson. In their world, there is no reason to worry about discrimination laws, or social security, or poverty relief because no-one is ever destitute, excluded or unable to get decent work. Anyone with a passing acquaintance with reality can recognise this for the class warfare that it really is.
Women's Success Story.......2002-05-06
Anyone who appreciated Who Stole Feminism?, where Christina Hoff Sommers corrects what passes for feminist statistics will find plenty to love in these 123 pages. Diana Furchtgott-Roth and Christine Stolba explain with tons of data why the "wage gap" and "glass ceiling" are myths based on bad statistics and a less than thorough investigation of the facts. The authors spell out the truth, that we should be celebrating women's progress. Feminists should be bragging that women earn the majority of bachelor's and master's degrees and that women-owned businesses are growing faster than businesses overall instead of inventing discrimination where it clearly doesn't exist, as the stats in this book prove. This book should be required reading in women's studies classes, but unfortunately the half-truths often spread in such classes are the reason this book needed to be written in the first place.
A valuable contribution of facts on a much debated subject........1999-04-29
Much of what we know about the economic status of women is summarized in this excellent monograph by Diana Furchtgott-Roth and Christine Stolba. It covers not only the so-called gender gap between men's and women's incomes, but also educational attainment, occupational choice and political influence.
