Book Description

The World of Faberge accompanies one of the most ambitious exhibitions ever mounted on the jewelers of the Russian Imperial Court. With over 750 treasures by Faberge and other world-famous jewelers and goldsmiths, all illustrated in full color, The World of Faberge brings together the famous collections from the Kremlin Museum in Moscow, the Hermitage in St. Petersburg, as well as the Forbes Collection and numerous private European and American collections.

For the first time, this book places the phenomenon of Faberge in its wider context. It focuses on its origins and sources, reveals aspects of the famous jewelers that have hitherto never properly been explored, and makes comparisons not only with Faberge's Russian competitors, but also with its foreign peers such as Cartier, Lalique and Tiffany.

Contributions by many leading Faberge specialists explore the significance and enduring legacy of this world of Faberge

Published to coincide with a major exhibition in the United States

5 out of 5 stars A Stunning Book.......2002-07-25

Wonderfully presented book examining the history and production facility set up by Carl Faberge. The research is spot on, as are the sumptuous colour photographs of many of the pieces produced, and I have seen few works on the subject as comprehensive as this one. As with the designers and craftsmen at the Faberge workshops this book is an inspiration, and I can thoroughly recommend it to anyone interested in the subject. A visual and intellectual feast for the mind and soul.

5 out of 5 stars simply lovely.......2001-01-25

This book is an exhibition catalouge for what must be one of the most amazing exhibitons held on Faberge in the World, in Vienna in 1987. At the back of the book there are hundreds of illustrated items by the firm. Most of the pictures are in colour, and the book is gorgeous, and covers everything from Imperial Easter eggs to jewllery and hardstone figures.

In additon to it's stunning photos the book also has as great deal of information about the firm and it's manufacturing techniqes that many other books on Faberge don't cover.

If you can find a copy of this book - Get it! I've only got a library book but if I ever get the chance to own a copy of this I will. Shame it's out of print.

Book Description

Based on proven designs from the beginnings of the Craftsman movement, Craftsman Collection showcases the solidity and style. While the designs have retained classic Craftsman and Bungalow exteriors, the interiors have been modernized to make the most of built-ins, storage areas and easy traffic flow from room to room. Wide, comfortable porches combine with homey architectural features to give these homes their unique personality.

1 out of 5 stars The cover looks good, but it's downhill from there........2001-08-28

I have always been an avid houseplan-looker, and recently I have become interested in Craftsman style homes. I hoped from the home pictured on the cover that the houses in this book would be inviting and intriguing. Well, the cover is about the only interesting home in this book. There aren't many craftsman qualities about these plans. For the most part, they're just plain ole houses.

3 out of 5 stars Should you "stick" with Stickley?.......2001-01-24

This book of craftsman inspired homes has plans in many square footage ranges and dimensions. I found the beginning overview of the craftsman tradition especially helpful as my husband and I begin to understand that our idea of a dream home involves many craftsman details.

Some of the homes, especially the smaller ones, seemed more to have craftsman touches, rather than being "truly craftsman." If you're a hardcore craftsman devotee, "stick" to the Stickley books. But, if you're just beginning your craftsman search and you're not a purist, this book is priced well and may prove to be inspirational!

1 out of 5 stars Not very craftsman like.......2000-08-30

I was dissapointed with the book. The home on the cover is the most craftsman like. The other homes are the same standard homes you see in other plan books. There is not much detail and no interior details at all.

      Book Description

An award-winning and prolific author of novels, plays, poems, stories, and essays, Reynolds Price has kept a working journal of his writing life for more than forty years. Published in a unique format that allows for the progressively layered style of his thoughts, Learning a Trade provides a window into this writer’s creative process and craftsman’s sensibilities. Instead of personal memoir or a collection of literary fragments, Learning a Trade presents what Price has called the “ongoing minutes” of his effort to learn his craft. Revealing the genesis and resolution of such works as The Surface of Earth, The Source of Light, Kate Vaiden, Clear Pictures, and Blue Calhoun, this book offers a rich reward to those seeking to enter the guild of writers, as well as those intrigued by the process of the literary life or fans of the work of Reynolds Price.

From reviews of the cloth edition:

“Learning a Trade is a rare contemporary example of [a published working journal], giving us an almost full documentary of the mind of this author.”—Alexander Theroux, Wall Street Journal

“[W]hile Price pulls deep and often from his own memories, he never confuses a notebook with a journal or diary—forms he finds to be ‘a repetitive bore at the end of a day.’ Rather, his life is ‘all in the work,’ he once claimed. ‘Not a secret spared.’”—Renee Tursi, New York Times Book Review

      4 out of 5 stars On Price's Learning a Trade.......2000-04-02

This is a great book to have around, and to dip into as you progress through Price's works -- which is definitely worth doing. It is not meant to be read through, start to finish; I have been reading the sections devoted to certain works after reading the works themselves. Pages devoted to a given work are quite specific; a familiarity with the work is very important, almost necessary. I had hoped the book would be a bit more generic about the craft, the writers Price has read, the perils of publishing, etc.; instead, the book is comprised of straight excerpts from the notebooks of a working writer, focusing on the naming of characters, motivation, structure and so on. The design of the book allows for Price's comments on his own notes -- sometimes written much later -- to appear on the facing pages, as they do in his actual notebooks. And the pages are chock full of gems such as this: writer's block is nothing more than "the writer's failure to understand his or her creative metabolism." And the book will lead you to other Price works, among which I heartily recommned Roxanna Slade,The Promise of Rest and Price's harrowing account of surviving spinal cancer, A Whole New Life. Price has a voice that is warm and distinctive, wonderfully southern, and he is not afraid to address life's larger issues -- rare among writers today.

                      Book Description

In dramatic color photographs by renowned environmental photographer Robert Glenn Ketchum and in insightful text by Charles Callison, Overlooked in America warns of the careless devastation of America's federally-held lands.

Using the Cuyahoga Valley National Recreation Area as a metaphor for the complicated management problems surrounding federal lands, Ketchum reveals the imperiled beauty of these areas. A full one-third of all U.S. land-- including parks, beaches, forests, off-shore oil-deposits, and mountains-- is owned and managed by the federal government, whose stewardship is intended to renew and maintain this vast national treasure. Due to clashing intra-agency goals and the ever-changing policies of rotating administrations, the federal government has long been negligent in enforcing the mandate of sustainable development of these lands. Caught in the middle of a bureaucratic snarl, our national trust is at risk of substantial environmental deterioration such as overgrazing, loss of topsoil, deforestation, contamination of soil and water, and failure to restore developed areas already sacrificed for their resources.

Stunning color photographs evoke the endangered elegance of the American landscape, from views of toxic brooks weaving through a forest floor to rustic barns set in the hills Overlooked in America makes a strong case for drastic changes in federal land management before our irreplaceable legacy is lost forever. Published to coincide with a traveling exhibit of Robert Glenn Ketchum's eloquent photographs, the book includes a preface by Mr. Ketchum and an essay by Charles Callison, of the National Resources Defense Council, on the achievements and shortcomings of federal land management.

                      3 out of 5 stars A concise, thought-provoking introduction.......2001-08-06

This brief book is Ted Trainer's manifesto on the state of the environment, a critique of the existing social and economic order, and an overview of what a more sustainable society might look like.

Trainer argues that environmental problems cannot be solved simply by recycling more, stopping old-growth logging or buying products with green dolphins on the label. Rather, a far more fundamental social and economic shift is needed.

Although the book is very short, it deals with subject-matter that could easily fill an encyclopedia. The point of this book is obviously to provide an introduction for those new to these arguments, and to provide a starting point for further reading. It achieves this reasonably well- it is certainly thought-provoking, and a list of recommended books is provided at the end.

I'm not sure that it is worth buying though, given that it is so brief. I'd say that anyone with more than a passing interest in this subject would probably be better off starting with something a bit more substantial.

3 out of 5 stars Too far fetched.......2000-06-19

Trainer's views for the new way in which society need to be shaped is the main idea that is relevent in this book. The only thing wrong with this book is that while his ideas are valid they are not really realistic in the current way of life. Good book just needs some optimsm when being read.

                          Book Description

The continuing rise in bank failures, including newsmaking crashes at such banks as Penn Square and Continental Illinois, along with the insolvency of the Federal Savings and Loan Insurance Corporation Fund, has eroded confidence in the nation's banking system. Taylor offers an analysis of the implications that events over the past years have had for the future operation of the U.S. banking system. In analyzing why the system is in such disequilibrium, Taylor presents a systemic view of banking operations and functions, a perspective he argues has been lacking in previous works on the subject. He also suggests ways to remedy the current crisis situation and restore individual and institutional customer confidence. Taylor's systemic approach enables him to compare the present U.S. situation to the British banking crisis of 1973-1975. He analyzes a series of bank failures and explains that the FDIC has three alternatives to bank failures: payoffs, bailouts, and buyouts. He introduces a new model designed to help the financial and banking communities resolve certain difficulties and proposes new ways of dealing with credit risk and credit malfunction. Finally, Taylor stresses the importance of social consensus and the function played by public opinion in aiding or avoiding potential bank failures. An important addition to the banking and finance curriculum, this book will also benefit banking executives and policymakers concerned with today's unacceptably high level of bank failure.

While it's just 122 pages including the index, "How Small Business Owners Succeed - And How You Can Too" is a good introduction on the basics that anyone wanting to start and run a small or medium size business should learn about and keep in mind. With its attractive layout and good use of topic headlines and occasional cartoons, you can read through it quickly and refer back to any part of it easily. While this book lacks some of the depth and detail found in some other business start-up books, it very effectively and concisely brings together most of the essential points and considerations in starting a business that other books take chapters and chapters to cover. All in all, this is a very good first book for anyone thinking about starting a business.
