    Book Description

"This book describes the arrival of modernism, regionalism, and postwar twentieth-century technology in an unlikely messenger from Pink Hill, Texas. O'Neil Ford was an American original, and this book does eloquent justice to that originality."

—Bill Lacy, FAIA, author of 100 Contemporary Architects: Drawings and Sketches

"David Dillon has stirred the embers of the fire of personality, conscience, and, yes, genius, that was O'Neil Ford, the ranking Texas architect of the twentieth century. That fire warmed and danced among many of us for several generations, and Dillon's evocation of Ford's era is touching and stimulating: it made me remember what kind of architect I wanted to be."

    —Frank D. Welch, FAIA

O'Neil Ford (1905-1982) was the most influential Texas architect of the twentieth century. A technological innovator who bridged Texas' rural past and urban future, he taught three generations of architects how to adapt vernacular forms and materials to modern conditions. Widely known for his many projects in San Antonio and Dallas, Ford also designed buildings from Laredo, Texas, to Saratoga Springs, New York, over the course of a sixty-year career.

In this book, David Dillon undertakes the first critical study of Ford's architecture in both its regional and national contexts. In particular, Dillon explores Ford's links to the regional and eclectic movements of the 1920s and 1930s, his use of postwar technology and materials (lift-slab, pre-stressed concrete shells, new metals), and his influence on other architects in Texas and the Southwest. Quotes from the author's wide-ranging interviews with O'Neil Ford in the last years of his life, as well as with his partners, relatives, friends, and critics, give the text firsthand vividness.

        Book Description

A witty, profound homage to Western art and an escorted tour of the masterworks beloved by all.

Ranging over hundreds of years—and countless styles—with breathtaking virtuosity, George Deem has repainted the history of Western art. Deem's special gift is to paint, with witty sympathy, his own "revisions" of famous works, revisions that look like the originals but transform them in some way.

Now, in the most comprehensive collection of his work ever assembled, the amazing scope of Deem's devotion to his subject, art itself, can be seen. The greatest American and European artists are represented; their work, at first glance, seems uncannily perfect. Here is an exquisite Vermeer, looking so much like the original that it takes a moment to realize there is no woman holding a water pitcher in the corner of the room. And here is Cubist Cache, Deem's tour de force imagining of what Parisians do with their cubist art when they go away on vacation.

As a special feature the book includes a die-cut, ready-to-assemble version of Deem's quotation of Manet's Le Déjeuner sur l'herbe, a cube in which we view the famous picnic from all four sides and from above.

This is the perfect gift book for art lovers. On one level it offers a delightful excursion through the famous paintings that everyone loves. On another, we marvel at the virtuoso display of artistic technique, in which no style or era can resist Deem's fond embrace and witty act of quotation. And finally, here is a body of work that, in affirming the richness and variety of its subject, reaffirms the pleasure we take in painting. 80 color illustrations.

As a video instructor who has worked with students ages 8 and up, I found this book to be a good primer for junior high to adult students. It is filled with color photos demonstrating techniques and written in short easy to understand segments. It doesn't cover everything in detail, but gives enough information for beginners to improve their shooting style.

          Book Description

Harvard economist Richard B. Freeman launches this provocative book with the idea that in equality is the one problem from which all crises in America flow. He contends that inequality-both economic and social-has become more brutal and pervasive in the last twenty years, and that it is now time to stop analyzing its causes and consequences and concentrate on doing something about it. Freeman offers real solutions: raising the income of the working class, reinvesting in cities, and reenergizing democratic institutions through the encouragement of local citizen organizations. His argument is answered by distinguished activists, social scientists, and activists-James Tobin, Heidi Hartmann, Michael Piore, Frances Fox Piven, James Heckman, Ernesto Cortes, Jr., and Paul R. Krugman-in essays that heed and add depth to Freeman's call. As they debate the limits of traditional solutions for inequality, all agree on one key prerequisite: A democracy can solve inequality only by living up to its name. Spirited and engaging, this unique dialogue will serve as a guidebook for activists, students, and all interested in achieving a just society.

4 out of 5 stars insigntful and helpful.......2007-03-27

one part of the book explores jupiter (and both jupiter ruled signs in the mental cross, namely pisces and sagittarius), their similarities and differences. it explores jupiterian personality into great detail and gives both very broad and detailed view of jupiter, includes many quotes from other authors, some of which are completely unavailable elsewhere (mainly out of print).
second part is more of a cookbook, as it explores meaning of jupiter in signs and houses and various aspects.
i have to admit having read the cookbook part for my dear ones, not thru and thru, and i found it insightful and useful, albeit slightly unexpected.
4 stars for style of writing, which is unfocussed, slightly scattered and sometimes repetitive. i am a foreigner and it was pretty difficult to concentrate on this one..

4 out of 5 stars Overall book on Jupiter.......2001-12-02

In the prologue the author writes that he began writing this book, inspired by Pluto entering Sagittarius and expecting the increase in Sagittarius and its ruler, Jupiterfs influence. Though Jupiter has been regarded as the best of fortune planet, it is the most neglected planet in astrology.

The author attempts to provide us with the whole picture of Jupiter in this book, explaining the key concepts and interpretive guidelines in the first part of the book, and then more detailed cookbook in the latter parts. What is the most interesting to me is that his comparison of Jupiter to Mercury, and also that of Sagittarius and the other three Mutable signs.

As he mentions, all the Mutable signs are related to "learning." Gemini and Virgo are ruled by Mercury, while Sagittarius and Pisces are (traditionally) ruled by Jupiter. So his way of comparing Jupiter to Mercury is actually very indicative to me. The author quotes from Charles Carter and writes that "Jupiter is a constructive and progressive Mercury. The latter is concerned with things as they are; it examines, it does not speculate or plan ahead. Jupiter seems to be the type of the explorer and experimenter, always ready to sweep its gaze towards wider horizons whether mental or physical."

In another part, he also quotes that "the vision of Gemini is normal, that of Virgo microscopic; but Jupiter is telescopic, scanning distant horizons. Mercury studies local maps; he is usually an authority on tubes and bus routes. But Jupiter asks for atlases and maps of continents."

Though modern Western educational system is dominated by Mercurian, the author insists on the importance of Jupiterfs envisioning, planning, improving, taking risks based on faith throughout the book.

In the human relationship, the author writes that those around Jupiterians may feel injured because of their insensitivity. In other words, the Jupiterian's sins come more often from omission than commission. Jupiterians do not intend to neglect others and their feelings. But they have begun to "above it all," and the results in an impersonal insensitivity to human feelings.

5 out of 5 stars Yet another contemporary classic by Stephen Arroyo.......2000-03-22

This book is the very essence of Jupiter. From its apt title, to its generous use of many famous chart examples, to Arroyo's trademark insight and wisdom on every page, "Exploring Jupiter" is positively a winner! The presentation of the astrology is clear, practical and intelligent, making it a must for both newer students and more experienced practising astrologers.

While outlining a framework for understanding Jupiter in chapter one, the author comments: "...I cannot help but feel that Jupiter's bigness and broad vision is inextricably linked to the perennial human search for a larger truth and for an experience of oneness with the universe". The range of natal charts throughout the book reflects this, each one accompanied by a brief biographical account and astrological notes. Albert Einstein, Woody Allen, Eleanor Roosevelt, Michael Jordan, Robert Redford, William Blake are just a few of the wide range of Jupiterian characters covered.

Unlike the majority of modern astrologers, Arroyo refers to Jupiter's ancient rulership of Pisces as being significant, and the book is written with this in mind. Otherwise much of the book is built on the usual "cookbook" approach: Jupiter through the signs, Jupiter through the houses (arranged by element), Jupiter aspects in the birth chart and so on. As always with Stephen Arroyo, it is the clarity and profound depth of these guidelines for interpretation that is so striking. The chapter on transits involving Jupiter is particularly good, building on ideas he has expressed in earlier writings.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best astrology books I've read.......2000-01-24

I generally don't find books about individual planets all that interesting--but Stephen Arroyo has done it right. He makes a powerful case for the importance of a planet that is often overlooked or treated blandly in chart interpretation--largely arguing from the charts of well-known people, in a series of perceptive readings that are themselves a great introduction to and argument for the art of astrology.

(Credit should be given to editor Barbara McEnerney, who contributed several of the chart readings--she and Arroyo should consider collaborating on a book of famous charts.)

The book includes full descriptions of how Jupiter can be interpreted by sign, house, aspect and transit. One big plus is that Arroyo quotes what other astrologers had to say about these factors--showing both common understandings and disagreements. There's also an insightful discussion of what Jupiter means in general, looking at the planet in conjunction with Sagittarius (and also Pisces) and in contrast with Saturn.

Even if you don't have a particular interest in Jupiter, you'll enjoy this book if you like great astrological writing.

                Book Description

1929. An explanation of the rise and fall of business firms and nations. Another volume from England's leading business writer. Casson explains his Formula of Progress is as follows: In the Evolution of the human race upwards, all progress depends upon the production of a comparatively small number of improved individuals, who are superior to the mass in knowledge, skill or character, and who, by reason of their superior powers, render a new service the mass of people among whom they live. This is the law of the efficient few. It points out that Progress depends upon the differentiation of a few higher quality samples of human beings. The mass of people are never progressive. The mass of people can destroy, but they can never create. They can pull down, but they cannot build up. All the constructive work in the world is done by a few individuals, and usually in spite of the active opposition of the mass. See other titles by this author available from Kessinger Publishing.

                              Book Description

Banking establishments, declared Thomas Jefferson back in 1799, are more dangerous than standing armies. Such armies are no longer cause for serious alarm. But commercial banking institutions, while justly applauded as the prime architects of America's economic success, are still assailed today—most recently by victims of the savings and loan debacle—as little better than the freakish hydra-headed monstrosities of yesteryear.

This lively, well-researched, and handsomely produced book, highlights the achievements of commercial banks, in the process distinguishing them from their more flamboyant competitors. In many ways the history of commercial banking in the state of New York constitutes the history of commercial banking for the entire nation. Under the guidance of the formidable but shadowy coalition of talent known as The Albany Regency, New York pioneered such innovations as the insurance of paper currency, so-called free chartering of banks by any qualified group of citizens, a crude form of deposit insurance, and an ingenious central clearing house whose collective strength enabled the state, and ultimately the nation, to weather many of the world's most severe financial crises.

Published to coincide with the Centennial of the New York State Bankers Association, For Each, the Strength of All not only delineates the great achievements and the great financial disasters of the last two centuries, but brings to life the colorful and often quirky men who made the key decisions at pivotal moments in the financial life of the nation. It throws new light on the celebrated duel between Hamilton and Burr (a fix that may have gone awry), the covert financing of the North in the Civil War years, and the negotiations (so secret that participants travelled under assumed names) that helped produce the Federal Reserve Act of 1913.

                                  Book Description

In Unbending Gender, Joan Williams takes a hard look at the state of feminism in America. Concerned by what she finds--young women who flatly refuse to identify themselves as feminists and working-class and minority women who feel the movement hasn't addressed the issues that dominate their daily lives--she outlines a new vision of feminism that calls for workplaces focused on the needs of families and, in divorce cases, recognition of the value of family work and its impact on women's earning power. Williams shows that workplaces are designed around men's bodies and life patterns in ways that discriminate against women, and that the work/family system that results is terrible for men, worse for women, and worst of all for children. She proposes a set of practical policies and legal initiatives to reorganize the two realms of work in employment and households--so that men and women can lead healthier and more productive personal and work lives. Williams introduces a new 'reconstructive' feminism that places class, race, and gender conflicts among women at center stage. Her solution is an inclusive, family-friendly feminism that supports both mothers and fathers as caregivers and as workers.

                                  4 out of 5 stars Great book.......2006-05-16

My partner of more than half a decade and I, want to have children, but he is also facing the same scheduling problems. I picked a company that supports work from home and 1 day off a week - but great possibility that I will not get promoted the same rate as my male colleagues. While his company only gives 1 week paternity leave (using vacation hours), which is of no real help at all. That is why we are waiting 15-20 years (we will be about 40-45) to adopt a couple of kids. We will be one of those old yuppie couples with Asian babies.

My parents were also over achievers at work, they hired a nanny for 13 years. For us career oriented people, our choices are very limited, but it is up to us to convince the corporate world for change. I am glad that some companies have family friendly benefits (still a long way to go) - while during my grandmother and mother's time they had no options at all.

5 out of 5 stars Impeccable research, very readable.......2002-03-09

This is one of a handful of books that I wish I had written. It tackles the difficult subject of the work/family conflict with impeccable research and persuasive arguments for reform. It's not strident or hyperbolic, just great scholarship and great writing. You don't have to be a lawyer or law professor to read and enjoy it; it would give great support to any parent struggling to find time enough to work and raise a child. It is a must-read for anyone interested in the work/family balance movement, anyone who still calls themselves a feminist (I do), and all working parents.

5 out of 5 stars "Must Reading" for Men, Also.......2001-01-06

Now more than ever before, fathers and husbands (as well as uncles, brothers, and sons) need to understand how and why so many women experience so much stress when struggling to fulfill all manner of traditional gender-specific obligations in combination with other obligations related to the workplace. This same understanding is imperative for men with whom these women associate in their workplace. I'm not saying women's obligations are better or worse than those men have. But many of them are significantly different. True, assignment of marital and parental obligtions often has less to do with gender than with practicality. Of necessity, some Baby Boomers and many Generation Xers have re-defined concepts such as "partnering" and "division of labor." The process of re-definition or refinement will accelerate with Generation Yers. One of Williams' key points is that at work and in the home, indeed everywhere, men and women must have the courage and (yes) the patience to collaborate and accommodate in ways and to an extent which spouses and parents never have before. Those unable to "bend" with appropriate adjustment and (yes) with good will could well "break." Williams identifies various major problems and their causes, then suggests how those problems could be avoided or solved. You may not agree with all of her opinions (fair enough) but I think you will agree that she addresses important issues with care and concern. So must each of us.

5 out of 5 stars Critical Information for Family Therapists.......2000-10-25

As a family therapist with a special interest in the area of work and family, I have read a number of books on this issue. Unbending Gender is a tremendous contribution to the field and one of my favorites. It was highly recommended to me by a marriage and family therapist and university professor, and I am passing on the recommendation to many of my colleagues. Williams' book has important implications for family therapy, as many male and female clients struggle with how to combine market work and family work. It will change the way you educate, normalize, and approach this issue with clients.

5 out of 5 stars Visions of a New Paradigm.......2000-08-12

This is the book that I had been waiting for! As a lawyer, feminist, wife and mother I have struggled with conflicts between work and career and found myself forced to make "choices" that later seemed unjust. After examining family law and employment discrimination law in the course of rethinking how our society structures the relationship of "market work" to "family work," Williams presents her visions for a new paradigm which she calls "reconstructive feminism" or "family humanism." She offers both legal strategies and policy initiatives for restructuring how we "work" and changing the ways we talk about gender. This book has had a tremendous impact on me. As a result, I am hoping to teach a law school course around this book next spring. Professor Williams has been extremely helpful in assisting me in that endeavor. In addition, I am urging everyone I know to read this book. We need to forge the coalitions Williams proposes if we are to be ultimately successful in "unbending" gender roles in our society.
