5 out of 5 stars Exactly what I wanted!.......2005-09-27

I was tentative about buying this book since there were no reviews and no picture posted, but I was very pleasantly surprised! The whole thing is very concise but covers a lot of ground, the first 50 pages provide a brief art history lesson starting from cave paintings up to the 1950's with lots of pictures, touching on art around the world and focusing on figure drawings. The rest of the book covers drawing techniques and materials, among other things it features an in-depth explanation of how to achieve perspective in cityscapes and landscapes and helpful diagrams of body proportions and anatomy for life drawing. Also, the example drawings are beautiful and Parramon goes into specifics of how to achieve a wide range of effects and which materials will provide those results. There is a lot of information and if you're looking for an in-depth guide to any specific technique or period in art history this may not be a book for you, but if you just want an overview of EVERYTHING you need to know about drawing and its history without having to read an 800 page book, and you like seeing pictures more than reading, you've found a winner.

    Book Description

This is the third book in successful series of occasional sketches by the grandfather of American alternative comix. These sketches reveal another side-- a contemplative side-- to the controversial artist, renowned for his taboo-breaking satires of American society. With his intricate cross-hatching and observant line, the drawings here show Crumb as an imaginative chronicler of everyday life.

5 out of 5 stars "You Deserve a Break Today".......2003-03-25

OK, I'm a Crumb fan. We ain't all, but many of us are, and I'm one of the many. Waiting For Food 3 is a beautiful collection of doodles and sketches by R. Crumb while... well, while waiting for food. This book is a collection of his restaurant placemat drawings. As R. proudly says in his intro dated July 2002, "I'm no longer simply doodling to pass the time 'til the food arrives. I'm EARNING MONEY while waiting to be served!" Good, he's having fun... he deserved it. This guy (almost) single handedly started the underground comic craze of the 60's and 70's. He started Zap Comix, writing and drawing the first two issues completely by himself. Check out crumbmuseum.com for a tribute to the Master, Robert (R) Crumb.

    5 out of 5 stars A masterpiece.......1999-05-14

I first saw these photographs before their publication in book form and they certainly speak for themselves, so I didn't feel a great urgency to buy the book. I didn't know what I was missing! The text complements, rather than explains, the pictures - anything else would have done a disservice to the strength of the images and Jones' brilliance in capturing them. A most worthwhile volume!

5 out of 5 stars Haunting and Unforgettable Photography.......1999-02-25

Jones' images provide a look onto the soul of people who killed and are about to die for their actions.

When I looked these people in the face from the safety of the outside the pages, I shivered and could almost hear the echoes in the chambers Jones photographed in. These are masterful portraits because they look inside where we think little or nothing exists and reveal what's left of the soul of these people who are waiting to die. Haunting and memorable, Jones' images tell an unforgettable story.

    Photojournalists, this is a keeper.

The modern welfare state is under threat from a variety of fronts. Changing demographic patterns, declining public trust, interest group demands and growing international competition for capital and labor are presenting modern states with intense pressures. This volume examines these competiting pressures and offers a coherent analyses of both institutional resilience and institutional change. Adopting an evolutionary approach, this innovative volume demonstrates both how past practices and policies significantly affect the current options and how social and economic forces impinge upon each of these societies in surprisingly different ways. Cross-national in scope and unified in approach, Restructuring the Welfare State examines core issues facing the contemporary welfare state while at the same time significantly advancing historical institutionalist theory.

              Book Description

`I congratulate the author on a great and important book. I couldn't agree more that the political party that comes closest to supporting humane growth economics should be the leader for the next 25 years. It's a great vision for the future, and his scholarly but readable mix of history, technology, economics and politics is very persuasive. It's the sort of stuff that should be taught in economics courses, but almost never is.' - David Moschella, author of Customer-driven IT: How Users Are Shaping Technology Industry Growth

`Rob Atkinson is one of the most creative thinkers about the American economy. In this fascinating book, he puts the "new economy" spurred by the digital revolution into the context of other historic transformations. By doing so, he shows how we can preserve the gains in productivity and implement policies that will keep the economy growing. Everyone concerned about our economic future should read this.' - Walter Isaacson, author of Benjamin Franklin: An American Life

Throughout American history, periodic cycles of economic change have fundamentally reordered the way we work, the organization of business and markets, the role of government, and even the nature of politics. If we are to control our future, we must understand this process of change.

              5 out of 5 stars Guide to America's Future.......2005-06-05

As a former Assistant Secretary of Commerce and Assistant Director of the Congressional Office of Technology Assessment,I have long been conversant with the issues addressed in Dr. Atkinson's book. I find myself in complete agreement with his basic thesis and believe he has articulated it so effectively and done such a prodigious job in assembling evidence from so many disparate sources, while delineating specific actions to promote productivity growth for a more humane economy, that I consider it a classic guide for America's 21st Century.

5 out of 5 stars The New Economy Lives.......2005-04-12

One of the best explanations of the New Economy I've read. Dr. Atkinson has written a readable economics book (no mean feat!) which explains and applies the work of Joseph Schumpeter, an economist people talk about but do not read.

As a professional in public policy, I find his recommendations innovative and challenging, and, above all, his explication of the New Economy clarifies why the 21st Century presents great progressive opportunities

I have been reviewing the literature of Knowledge Management (KM) for over a year. I am surprised how much is written about KM, but how little it is employed in the workplace, learning place, and government. The Complete Guide is a fine introduction--even though it is five years old, providing the core concepts and a well-rounded Glossary of KM.

Now, if we could only get the decision-makers to collaborate with us fire-starters and implement KM, we wouldn't be idiots for lack of access to knowledge resources.

4 out of 5 stars A good introductory overview of the subject.......2007-03-09

As the title indicates, this is a basic introduction to the topic of Knowlege Management (KM). For that purpose it does a good job of covering the subject and providing a basic outline for planning your own KM implementation in your organization. It's not "the only book you'll need" to implement KM, nor does it claim to be, although more details on references would be a good addition for those going on to the next level.

4 out of 5 stars The Complete Idiot's Guide to Knowledge Management .......2006-11-10

An excellent book for novices and those wanting to start KM activities in a go. Simple and easy to read and very well structured.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent grounding in knowledge management theory and practice!.......2005-12-31

Melissie is a wonderful person, a great writer, and a very knowledgeable knowledge management expert.

Her writing is engaging without being patronizing or overly complex. She provides a wonderful overview of a number of different knowledge management practices. This was one of my most-thumbed-through books when I was first learning about knowledge management (having been asked to lead a brand-new knowledge management department, I had to come up to speed fast!).

I highly recommend this book for anyone who's getting started in the field and wants to learn more, as well as anyone in any field who wants an overview of what knowledge management is all about.

5 out of 5 stars An Excellent and Understandable Reference.......2005-12-02

By far the most useful of all my KM references. An excellent choice if you are trying to initiate a KM effort in your organization and to help people understand what KM is and isn't!

Inspirational business speaker, popular newspaper columnist, and bestselling author Harvey Mackay has been "moonlighting" for 40 years as president of Mackay Envelope Corporation, an $85 million company that produces more than 17 million envelopes a day. With the help of imagery derived from this industry, he's now dispensing a new batch of lessons on life and business in Pushing the Envelope: All the Way to the Top. Its five sections--cleverly titled "How to Be A #10," "Licking the Competition," "How I Pushed the Envelope," "The Flap on Management," and "Going First Class"--offer practical advice on such topics as hiring, motivating, training, producing, and negotiating. Each short and highly focused chapter deals with one specific idea and concludes with a pithy aphorism dubbed Mackay's Moral, such as "There's much more to winning than finishing first" and "In negotiations, as in poker, a superior hand can be beaten by superior knowledge of your opponents." Interweaving experiences from a diverse lot including Sylvester Stallone, Ulysses S. Grant, Will Rogers, and Star Wars' Yoda with anecdotes drawn from his own career, Mackay presents a litany of solid suggestions that will prove as useful as they are fun to read. --Howard Rothman

                          Customer Reviews:

                          3 out of 5 stars self-promotion.......2006-07-11

If it didn't say "Harvey Mackay" on the cover, we wouldn't even mention this book, but ol' Swim with the Sharks Harvey is a brand unto himself. Pushing the Envelope is pure Mackay: breezy style, predictable advice, management insights as deep as a puddle. Still, expect it to sell. Mackay, like Zig Ziglar, can move books on name recognition alone.

This latest tome offers 90 chapters of advice on how to improve yourself, outdo the competition, raise expectations, manage effectively, and do it all with flair. When you pack that much living into one slim volume, you can expect each chapter to have maybe a shade more meaning than a fortune cookie. That's not to say that some of the advice isn't sound. It's just that so much of it is insight into the obvious. Take this pearl, for example: "Always let the other side talk first" in a negotiation. OK, fair enough, but what if both of you have read the book?

If nothing else, Mackay is a master of self-promotion. He tells you that to save time you should listen to books on tape and then gives you the phone number for Nightingale Conant, which he calls "the biggest and best" source of them. Well, he doesn't mention it, but Mackay's taped books are a Nightingale Conant staple. Then again, learning to self-promote, network, and connect at every turn is central to his whole rap. He's merely practicing what he preaches about pursuing every opportunity--indeed, running it into the ground.

Mackay does point readers to some really good titles with the oomph his book doesn't have, suggesting The Real Heroes of Business...and Not a CEO Among Them, by Bill Fromm and Len Schlesinger (Currency/Doubleday, 1994), which chronicles 14 employees across the country who provide exemplary service; and Leadership Without Easy Answers, by Ronald A. Heifetz (Belknap Press, 1994), which is indeed one of the best books on leadership written in many years.

To be fair, Mackay can be a hoot, and sometimes that's all you want one of his books for. He can even laugh at his own breed, as he does in a wonderful send-up in chapter 9. Laid out as a screenplay idea that was rejected by his real-life moviedirector son, the chapter describes a befuddled, aging CEO who spouts management wisdom--when he can remember it--to young whippersnappers seeking advice. "Dig your well before you stub your toe...wait a minute, that's not it...," he fumbles. Hilariously accurate.

                          5 out of 5 stars Great book.......2004-03-07

One of my favorite things to do besides learn about the stock market is read books on starting/running businesses and self help/motivational/inspirational books I find these books to be a relaxing brain stimulant that helps me better myself. I am sure others receive the similar feelings and thoughts from reading material like this.

Pushing the envelope is another great book by Harvey Mackay (he owns an envelope company incase you were wondering.) Like his other books "Swim with the Sharks Without Being Eaten Alive" and "Beware the naked man who offers you his shirt" Pushing the envelope is choke full of real life tips on how to be better at work, at home and with friends. Hands off to Harvey for he has created another wonderful book.

If you would like to invest in your future I recommend purchasing this book: Pushing the envelope all the way to the top

I have been a fan of Harvey Mackay since reading Swim with the Sharks. Pushing the Envelope is even better. If you are in business or want to be, read this book and learn from a master..

3 out of 5 stars Is it me?.......2001-08-11

Did I read the same book as the rest of these reviews? I like Harvey Mackay and enjoyed Swim With the Sharks, but I thought this book was a fairly simplistic brain dump of cliches and unoriginal thoughts. I do believe Mackay's geniunely decent nature come through and most of the concepts were fairly well presented, but I found very little here I hadn't already heard. I kept thinking to myself that this was Harvey's publisher squeezing out another book under contract. Sorry.

From Author of "Script Magic: Subconscious Techniques to Conquer Writer's Block: Want to get motivated? Want to do the impossible! You can, with Harvey MacKay as your guide! There are many poignant messages in this book, but the two that touched me the most was the fact that MacKay aimed for and achieved his desires, despite the "odds." And secondly, the subtle message I get from him and his book is that generosity is really the best policy. Tuck it under your pillow at night and read it for inspiration!
