    Book Description

Winner of the Alice Davis Hitchcock Award from the Society of Architectural Historians

When the magnificent Auditorium Building opened on Chicago's Michigan Avenue in December 1889, it marked Chicago's emergence both as the leading city of the Midwest and as a metropolis of international stature. In this lavishly illustrated book, Joseph M. Siry explores not just the architectural history of the Auditorium Building but also the crucial role it played in Chicago's social history. Covering the Auditorium from the early design stage to its opening, its later renovations, its links to culture and politics in Chicago, and its influence on later Adler and Sullivan works (including the Schiller Building and the Chicago Stock Exchange Building), this volume recounts the fascinating tale of a building that helped to define a city and an era.

        Book Description

More and more painters are traveling with the intent of capturing new experiences in their art. Whether doing so to keep a journal of their thoughts and feelings on the road or simply a visual record of the journey, the finished product is a work of art in itself.

Watercolor Journeys provides readers with a look "over the shoulder" at the personal watercolor sketchbooks of internationally experienced artist Richard Schilling. Built around fifty key questions or problems artists will encounter while keeping a travel journal, it's packed with hundreds of tips and techniques born from a lifetime of painting- on-the-road experience. Schilling's actual journal pages are reproduced to clarify each and every lesson.

Readers will also find solutions to the unexpected problems of journaling on the road, such as dealing with rain or insect attacks, or sketching the local populace without being noticed. Schilling's fascinating, sometimes humorous anecdotes will keep readers enthralled even when they aren't painting!

Richard Schilling has been a watercolor artist for forty years. He teaches at the Loveland Academy of Fine Arts and is a frequent contributor to many fine art magazines, including The Artist's Magazine, American Artist and Southwest Art. An avid traveler, he recently completed a fifteen country tour of Europe and the Middle East. Schilling lives in Loveland, Colorado.

5 out of 5 stars About the Book-.......2004-11-11

            Synopsis:

Just across the Channel lies a different world, the north coast of France, celebrated by generations of painters and writers, from Eugene Boudin to Marcel Proust. It is a world of picturesque fishing ports like Treboul, of genteel resorts like Cabourg, which Proust called Balbec, and where he fell in love with Albertine and of old-fashioned sea-side towns like Saint-Marc-sur-Mer, the setting for Jacques Tati's "Monsieur Hulot's Holiday".

Glynn Boyd Harte evokes this lost domain. Setting off from Wimereux, he journeys unsystematically westwards, painting madly-turreted villas, pre-war garages, their walls plastered with old advertisements, cafes with their red-checked gingham table-cloths, sea-side stalls, with rubber tyres and buckets and spades, and fishmongers' slabs covered with oysters, mussels and langoustines. He stays in elegantly faded hotels with bizarre wallpapers. The book finishes in an end-of-season sadness as the last visitors depart, the hotels are closed and shuttered and the long autumn shadows creep across the empty sands.

Glynn Boyd Harte's previous books include "A Weekend in Dieppe", "Metro-land" and "Venice".

                    Book Description

In watercolors, stories and poems, Crow explores how we carry our childhood throughout our adult lives. She shows the interplay between the two with humor and insight.

Watercolors painted from childhood snapshots are combined with words and definitions from the dictionary that match the mood of the image. Angel, enthusiasm, mischief, rascal, precious, tenacious; such words put us in touch with the dauntless spirit and optimism of the child. Through them we reconnect with the world of our imagination.

                          Book Description

This intriguing collection is designed to show how economists can play a more active role in designing and directing the nation's social institutions. By taking the task of political economy seriously, the contributors (including some of today's most distinguished economists) reveal the power of economic thought to offer innovative solutions to some of the most difficult problems facing society today. By creating markets where none existed before, the authors propose efficient, reliable, and profitable improvements to current systems of health insurance, financial markets, human organ distribution, judicial practice, bankruptcy and securities regulation, patenting, and transportation. Written in the entrepreneurial spirit, these essays show economics to be an ambitious, dynamic, and far-from-dismal science.

The patent buyouts chapter shows how most patents could be put into the public domain (fixing some problems associated with monopoly) while also increasing the incentives for innovation (at least in areas such as drugs where the patent system works moderately well). Two minor weaknesses in the paper: it ought to explain why this is a better use of money than funding research directly (I expect this could be done by analyzing the incentives and track record of small startup drug companies versus nonprofit/government researchers). The joint randomization for substitutes works well if there's unlimited money to buy patents, but if a patentholder can make joint patents too expensive to buy by falsely claiming that its patent is a substitute, then it's hard to analyze whether problems result (although I'm fairly sure they could be dealt with).
The chapter on decision markets (aka idea futures) provides some hints on how many of the problems with democracy could be fixed. Hopefully this will encourage readers to seek out his more thorough argument (search for Futarchy to find it).
The time-consistent health insurance proposal describes a good free-market alternative solution to many of the problems that government-run insurance proposals claim to address.
The chapter on gene insurance would address additional problems with people born with genes that scare insurers, but only if it were possible to require buying this insurance prior before an infants genes get tested for defects. But it's unclear how such a requirement can be enforced - it seems possible that a mother will often be able to get a fetus tested secretly before the government realizes it's time for the child to get insured.
The section on organ shortages provides some interesting arguments that the medical establishment profits from the shortage of organs created by laws against the sale of organs.
The chapter on securities regulation is too longwinded but contains good evidence that competition between securities regulators will help investors.

Ok, I am the editor. Here, however, are some advance comments on Entrepreneurial Economics from Nobel Laureate Milton Friedman and distinguished economists William Baumol and Armen Alchian.

P.S. Steven Landsburg wrote the foreword, so if you like his books (The Armchair Economist, Fair Play etc.) you will probably like this book also.

"The essays in Entrepreneurial Economics display economic ingenuity at its best, devoted to inventing market solutions for a remarkably wide range of public issues. The analysis is subtle and tends to be comprehensive; though the subjects are challenging, the exposition is lucid."
                          -MILTON FRIEDMAN

"I thoroughly enjoyed Entrepreneurial Economics. . . . A very stimulating collection of ingenious ideas that can be characterized as market cures for market failure. A substantial number are promising as practical measures that can contribute to economic welfare, and all of them stimulate the imagination, promising to elicit new ideas from the reader."
-WILLIAM J. BAUMOL, Director, C.V. Starr Center for Applied Economics, Department of Economics, New York University

"Entrepreneurial Economics offers you lively, eye-opening, mind stretching applications of economic principles and analysis. Students who read it will confound teachers who haven't."
-ARMEN A. ALCHIAN, Professor of Economics, UCLA

                          Book Description

Today's dramatic globalization parallels earlier historical periods of rapid technological change that brought contested benefits and costs. James Lee argues that the current pace of technological change is on a collision course with the human ability to absorb it, but that we can learn lessons from the past to help us resolve todays' problems.

Exploring the Gaps looks at how the growing tensions between economic, ecological and social factors threaten our ability to make trade and cultural exchanges work to benefit people and the world around them. Through case studies collected by the Trade Environment Database Project, Lee's powerful argument provides a blueprint to meet the challenges of elemental reintegration at global and local levels. It will interest anyone concerned with the issues of development, environment, globalization and political economy.

In Exploring The Gaps: Vital Links Between Trade, Environment And Culture, James Lee (director of the Trade Environment Database Project) focuses on the interrelationship and mutual influences and impacts between economic, ecological, and social factors. The rapid pace of globalization is seemingly outstripping human abilities to absorb the changes imposed by telecommunication, commerce, and resource exploitation. Very highly recommended and informative reading for students of environment issues, international trade, and cross-cultural studies, Exploring The Gaps features contemporary cases (including examples of endangered species) to underscore the dilemmas within environments and cultures. The reader will also be offered a strategy and approach for meeting the challenges that continued globalization presents.

5 out of 5 stars A must read in this age of globalization and e-commerce.......2000-11-16

Exploring the Gaps, really does in itself fill the gaps between the current electronic age, and this global society that we live in, while giving us the historical context for the interconnectivity of these separate elements. This dynamic analysis brings in various points that should be considered in this age.

While many might suspect it to be purely academic, everyone from the dot-com manager to the international businessman will benefit from this book. International Trade, and Electronic Trade are not mutually exclusive terms anymore. This book makes that clearer than ever.

The historical perspectives offered here confirm that this process started ages before the "dot-com age". This historical context is invaluable. This is as much a history book as it is a book about the present and the future. There aren't many works that marry economics, anthropology, sociology, history and geography in such a fascinating manner, with implications for today's e-world.

One recommendation would be to have a few more graphics, but when read in conjunction with the websites listed, this book really does come alive in a sense.

The globalization debate and discourse is richer for this book.

Globalization and Information Revolution have resulted in paradigmatic shifts in our approaches to various issues. Traditional notions about finances, information, entertainment, and so forth, have undergone remarkable metamorphosis. These sweeping changes have touched upon every realm of individual existence and opened up new dimensions to solving the existing problems.

Millennial Innovation ruminates on these dynamic alterations and opens up new vistas of opportunities before human society in many spheres - cultural, economic, health - in this information-driven global village.

5 out of 5 stars Step aside Mr. Ford and Mr. Gates........2002-09-05

As Henry Ford and Bill Gates before him, Mr. Strong has tapped into that mind set which allows one to take a fresh and uninhibited look at today's "modern" world in a business sense, with an eye towards improvement coupled with efficiency. The 50 ideas Mr. Strong outlines are not limited to a pure business setting but instead provide a springboard for application in various disciplines. In today's economy, the guidance this book provides is a welcomed asset.

5 out of 5 stars Forward Thinking Yet Realistic.......2002-08-28

I would highly recommend this book to anyone serious about starting a new business in today's world. The strength of this book not only lies in the ideas presented by Mr. Strong, but in the analysis of the thought process behind his recommendations. Far from being a rehashed list of tired, unworkable ideas (as I have found many books in this genre to be), this book opens a new world of ideas, and clearly demonstrates how a motivated individual can understand the world around him, find profitable ways to meet needs that are not being met, and make his or her own breaks.
