    Book Description

This is a study of Europe during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries - a period of economic and cultural upheaval, of dramatic changes in politics, society, and religion, and of constant warring among the emergent states. Richard Bonney draws the many strands of this complex history into a comprehensive and exciting account. Based on extensive research, The European Dynastic States is rich in detail and original in approach. It covers such diverse themes as the Reformation, witchcraft, diplomacy, population structure, the growth of capitalism, wars of religion, and wars of expansion. Professor Bonney also examines the Scandinavian countries and Russia, areas frequently neglected by historians. Notes, maps, a chronology, and a guide to further reading will make this book indispensable for students of early modern Europe.

              Book Description

With its fragile beauty and dark power, the Amazon has fascinated people throughout the centuries. Enthralled by its exotic and impenetrable mystery on his first visit to the region in 1998, Jerry Burchfield sought to utilize his skills as a photographer both to celebrate the Amazon’s stunning beauty and also communicate his concern for its future. Primal Images is the product of his passion, composed of exquisite lumen prints created entirely without a camera or lens.

To create his lumens, Burchfield placed plant cuttings directly onto aged black-and-white photographic paper that he secured to the deck of his Amazon boat. He then let the beautifully chaotic interaction of sunlight, rain, temperature, and each plant’s inherent moisture and chemistry, among other factors, play out freely in prolonged exposures. The result is an astonishing array of images--from the starkly representational to pure abstractions of color, shape, and form--that powerfully celebrate the rare and resplendent beauty of the world’s largest tropical rain forest.

Burchfield’s photographic technique draws on methods formulated during the origins of photography, beginning with the shadowgrams of nineteenth-century pioneers William Henry Fox Talbot and Anna Atkins and, more recently, twentieth-century innovators Harry Callahan and Robert Heinecken. Yet Burchfield adds a depth to the process that, as Wade Davis writes in his foreword, “seeks to see beneath the surface of things to the very inner worlds that shamans desire to know.”

“Jerry Burchfield’s images are a testament to the respect in which he holds the natural world. There is a reverence in these photograms that moves them beyond the decorative, outside the scientific, and above the formal. Burchfield quietly collaborates with the form and rhythms of the natural, celebrates the authority and simplicity of his process, and respects the products and demands of time. His images reflect an artmaking sensibility more attuned to discoveries than to dictates.”--Tim Wride, associate curator of photography, Los Angeles County Museum of Art

              Book Description

Eminently suited to classroom use as well as individual study, Roger Myerson's introductory text provides a clear and thorough examination of the models, solution concepts, results, and methodological principles of noncooperative and cooperative game theory. Myerson introduces, clarifies, and synthesizes the extraordinary advances made in the subject over the past fifteen years, presents an overview of decision theory, and comprehensively reviews the development of the fundamental models: games in extensive form and strategic form, and Bayesian games with incomplete information.

Game Theory will be useful for students at the graduate level in economics, political science, operations research, and applied mathematics. Everyone who uses game theory in research will find this book essential.

              5 out of 5 stars Good stuff.......2007-10-18

excellent book, very comprehensive step by step approach.I especially enjoyed the sections on Nash equilibria and infinite strategies.Great for those who wish to understand the underlying foundations of decision making via both simple and intricate mathematics. The concepts are also explained well in english through generally understood examples.

              5 out of 5 stars Masterpiece.......2004-03-24

This book is a masterpiece: it goes from the simple and straightforward (with examples of sequential equilibria) to technical and challenging material (such as the Mertens-Zamir type space). I own Fudenberg-Tirole and Osborne-Rubinstein, but it is Myerson that gets picked up the most. What I find most rewarding is that Myerson introduces everything gently, working from examples to build a general theory.

              4 out of 5 stars not bad.......2003-06-07

very comprehensive book. Covers pretty much everything. It's supposed to be a graduate text but undergrads can handle it as long as they know some math and aren't too scared by all the notation. Oh and Myerson is nice guy too.

5 out of 5 stars still on the frontier because of disinformation.......2003-02-09

This book is not good only because it explains all well known difficult concepts which noone so far has been able to explain clearly and rigourosly in one book but for new important topics that are less known for the majority of game theorists. I'm refering to the idea of networks and cooperation structures and also cooperation under uncertainty with the idea of virtual utility.

5 out of 5 stars An Elegant and Deep Treatment.......2000-06-13

I just completed a game theory book (Game Theory Evolving, Princeton University Press, 2000). To find the best way to present various materials, I went through virtually every game theory book in existence. For the presentation of the basic material on normal and extensive form games, nothing even came close to this book in clarity of presentation and depth of understanding of the issues. Most textbooks, even highly touted ones that are mathematically challenging, do not even come close, and rarely even present the material in a coherent form at all.

I used to do a lot of carpentry, and I always knew the good carpenters from the run of the mill. The latter talk about how to build stuff. The good ones talked about how you choose, preserve, treat, and sharpen your tools. Myerson is, for game theory, like the good carpenter, and this book is more about the nature of the tools of game theory than their deployment--although it is certainly that, too.

The subtitle of this book is silly ("The Analysis of Conflict"). Game theory is the analysis of cooperation as much as conflict, and much, much else as well. So is this book.

                Book Description

Changing Games, Changing Strategies provides a fresh look at the end of the Cold War and consequent changes in East-West security relations. The central question underlying the book is how a range of policies, previously thought to be unrealistic, became possible. Combining a post-Wittgensteinian approach to language, with insights from the critical theory of the Frankfurt School and Habermas, the book explores the relationship between meaning and practice in a detailed analysis of the contradictions of the late Cold War and post-Cold War world. The analysis demonstrates that developments over this twenty year period cannot be seen in isolation; Primakov’s acts cannot be understood without Gorbachev; Reagan or Gorbachev’s acts cannot be understood without the independent social movements or initiatives in both blocs; nor these movements without Helsinki. The study calls into question the conventional wisdom that the end of the Cold War was a case of "the West winning." Rather than a victory of one side over the other, the end of the Cold War represents a transition from conflict to dialogue and co-operation in a whole Europe, a conclusion which has consequences for the way we think about the future of East-West security relations against the background of NATO expansion.

                      Book Description

Challenging the libertarians' definition of freedom and democracy, this study portrays the social philosophy of Milton Friedman, James Buchanan, Friedrich Hayek, and George Stigler as the bulwark of an attack on welfare and regulatory state collectivism and as undermining majoritarian democracy, political and civil liberties, and social equality. The book opens with Frank Knight's doctrines and their impact on the Chicago laissez faire economists, places libertarianism within the American tradition of empirical collectivism, and explores Friedrich Hayek's road-to-serfdom thesis within the context of the New Deal. Posing problems of corporate power, it uses Friedman, Stigler, and Buchanan as examples of libertarian denial of these problems and, in a consideration of the debate between the New Left and Libertarian Right, contrasts their ideologies. The work concludes with a historical summing up that juxtaposes the recent past to the present, links libertarian material interests with the growth of corporate hegemony, and portrays the right wing of neoclassical economics as an intellectual bulwark of business culture. The emergent plutocracy that we now live in, including the erosion of democratic theory and practice, owes a significant part of its doctrinal and political sustenance to the influence of the free market economists who are the subject of this book. The study is the first to use the unpublished papers of libertarians James Buchanan, Gordon Tullock, Milton Friedman, and George Stigler to bring their interpretations of the meaning of freedom and democracy into question.

                              Book Description

This is a study of the emergence, growth and performance of British multinational banks from their origins in the 1830s until the present day. British owned banks played leading roles in the financial systems of much of Asia and the Southern hemishere during the nineteenth century and after. In the 1970s and 1980s, they made large investments in California and elsewhere in the United States. They played major roles in the finance of international trade, in international diplomacy, in the birth of the Eurodollar market, and in the world debt crisis. This is the first modern general history of these banks. It is based on a wide range of confidential banking archives in Britain, Australia and Hong Kong, most of which were previously unavailable. Geoffrey Jones places this new empirical evidence in the context of modern theories of multinational enterprise and of competitive advantage. This is a lucidly written and fascinating study, of importance not only to historians but also to anyone concerned with contemporary multinational banking.

                                Book Description

"The only goal you cannot achieve is the one you have not yet recognized."

More than twenty years ago, entrepreneur Stephan Schiffman launched his own business -- D.E.I. Management Group Inc. -- and built it into a major financial success. Since then Schiffman has taught more than 300,000 salespeople his internationally acclaimed methodology for high-efficiency selling. Now Schiffman reveals his innovative business-building strategies -- from conceptualization to cashing out -- in one complete and concise guide written specifically for the entrepreneur.

Combining his revolutionary, user-friendly approach with real-life examples of his methods at work, Schiff man guides you through the four critical "threshold experiences" all entrepreneurs must cross to be successful.

STARTING OUT -- the most important early issues and key questions:

                              • How to know if you have what it takes to be your own boss

                              • How much capital you need to begin

                              • The pros and cons of franchises, manufacturing startups, service startups, and buying existing businesses

BRANCHING OUT -- making the most of your resources:

                              • Why you are your own best asset

                              • How to track progress -- and focus on goals

                              • How to create your own niche in the marketplace

                              • How to manage money, people, and time

FINDING OUT -- knowing your customers, and your marketplace:

                              • How to sell -- even if you're a non-salesperson

                              • The advantages and disadvantages of direct marketing, advertising and publicity

                              • Understanding the sales cycle and maximizing profit

GROWING UP -- the keys to managed change and growth:

                              • Why growth is costly, but worth it

                              • How to change with your business

                              • When to sell the business -- and for how much

                              • Strategies for moving on -- and attacking the next challenge

Whether you're just thinking about starting a business, or have already taken the plunge, Make It Your Business is an essential resource you can use daily. Complete with information on obtaining financing, a concise guide to interviewing potential employees, and long-term planning tools, it will ease your company's growing pains while helping you build the business of your dreams.

                                Customer Reviews:

                                2 out of 5 stars I expected more.......2000-12-16

Schiffman does a good job of outlining the dos and don'ts of starting your own business. As a small business owner, I was looking forward to reading the book.

However, like many business books, this book disappoints. All you get is common sense solutions and advice. While I did manage to get a few pieces of advice that I can use, I didn't snag much more than that.

1 out of 5 stars This tape could do you more harm than good........1998-12-24

I operate a successful Internet-based business that nets me a six-figure annual income. I make a conscious effort to learn new things each day and bring my business to higher and higher levels. It was in this spirit that I bought this item.

The author gives a "test" at the beginning to "qualify" people considering self-employment. If you "fail" as many as two questions, he says, you won't succeed in business. Better keep your day job. I "failed" several of the questions. So why am I successfully self-employed, making a six-figure income? The answer is that Mr. Schiffman's test is highly flawed. It pains me to think that people who could succeed in business, as I did, will take this "test," "fail" it, and then be discouraged.

The author comes across as a very sincere person, someone who is decent and well-intentioned. But his "definitive guide" consists of tired platitudes (admit your mistakes, consult a financial advisor, take time off to relax, etc.) that are of little value to anyone with common sense.

The author asserts that you have to spend more money (on your infrastructure) as you become more successful. If that ever was a valid business model, it certainly no longer is and my own experience is testimony to that. Each year, I spend less, because I know what doesn't work, because technology is improving and I can harness technology to work for me.

In short, I'm afraid that this guide can potentially do people more harm than good.
