                      Book Description

From 1926 until her death in 1954, Mexican painter Frida Kahlo created striking, often shocking, images that reflected her turbulent life. One of four daughters born to a Hungarian-Jewish father and a mother of Spanish and Mexican Indian descent, in the Mexico City suburb of Coyoacn, Kahlo did not originally plan to become an artist. During her convalescence from a bus accident in her late teens, Kahlo began to paint with oils. Her pictures, mostly self-portraits and still-lifes, were deliberately naive, filled with the bright colors and flattened forms of the Mexican folk art she loved. At 21, Kahlo fell in love with the Mexican muralist Diego Rivera; their stormy, passionate relationship survived infidelities, the pressures of Rivera's career, a divorce and remarriage, and Kahlo's poor health. The couple traveled to the United States and France, where Kahlo met luminaries from the worlds of art and politics. She had her first solo exhibition at the Julien Levy Gallery in New York City in 1938 and enjoyed considerable success during the 40s, but her reputation soared posthumously, beginning in the 80s with the publication of numerous books about her work by feminist art historians and others. In the last two decades an explosion of Kahlo-inspired films, plays, calendars, and jewelry has transformed the artist into a veritable cult figure. Portraits of an Icon is not another book featuring Kahlo's beloved, tortured self-portraits. Rather, it offers another kind of portrait of the artist, a means of seeing her through the eyes of those who surrounded her: modern masters of the camera such as Edward Weston, Imogen Cunningham, Manuel Alvarez Bravo, and Martin Munkacsi; leading photojournalists such as Giselle Freund, Bernard Silberstein, and Fritz Henle; and Kahlo's relatives, lovers, and friends, among them Guillermo Kahlo, Nicolas Muray, and Lola Alvarez Bravo. The images span Kahlo's life, beginning with a photograph of a self-possessed chubby four-year-old, her fists full of wilting roses, and ending with the image of an emaciated, wasted figure laying on her deathbed, dressed in pre-Columbian finery. They follow the artist's trajectory from precocious child to famous artist, bringing into focus the painter, the paintings, the patient, the wife, the daughter, the lover, the friend. They permit a look into her bedroom, a seat at her table, a visit to her hospital room, a stroll through her garden, a view into her collections, and some play with her pets. While many of these images provide us with a unique opportunity to glimpse the woman behind the facade, others, though less revealing, are equally fascinating in allowing us to view one of the most intriguing of the artist's creations--the construction of a self-image as carefully crafted and conceived as any of her works of art.

                            Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Great Book, with a small font........2006-07-18

This is indeed a very well made compilation on a difficult subject. It covers many authors with great efficiency. I'm a history buff and an economist so this was heaven for me.
My only problem with the Reader itself is the font; I felt it was a bit on the small side making the reading process less pleasurable than it otherwise would have been.

It should also be made clear that some great economists are mediocre writers, making their points in a very obtuse manner. Also that many early economists didn't know some principles which we today find obvious, this makes some of the writing very quaint in their logic and propositions. This will be fascinating for those who wish to study the history of the economic thought process by looking at the authors themselves. It is not, however, a good book from which to learn economic theory. You are better off knowing the subject already before studying its intellectual history.

Just don't jump into this book without some background on economics. The early authors aren't very eloquent in making their points and the later authors become a bit math intensive if you haven't seen the subject before.

If on the other hand you want a well-compiled overview of great economic classics this book is simply unbeatable. I loved it, but then again I'm a geek.

                            5 out of 5 stars A Marvellous Record of a Rich Discipline.......2003-09-25

I have been waiting for years for this kind of book. I teach a small history of economic thought part-time to two colleges in Florida and my students have been very reluctant to dig into their pockets to buy the original texts - there are so many important books. This handy compendium brings together the key contributions between the covers of one, utterly essential volume.

I like the relative conservatism of the selections - the editors do not impose their view of the canon on others and instead treat us to all the classics. I particularly enjoyed the linking material: everything is placed into its proper context.

Lastly - any book that includes "The Fable of the Bees" gets my vote - Godlike Genius!!

                                                        Book Description

A new edition on the 20th anniversary of the miners' strike.

Margaret Thatcher branded the leaders of the 1984-85 miners' strike “the enemy within.” With the publication of this book, the full irony of that accusation became clear. Seumas Milne revealed for the first time the astonishing lengths to which the government and its intelligence machine were prepared to go to destroy the power of Britain's miners' union. There was an enemy within. It was the secret services of the British state, operating inside the NUM itself. In this edition, published for the twentieth anniversary of the strike, new material brings the story up to date.

Scargill and Heathfield are heroes --God knows we need them now more than ever! What this book does is expose the pressure and the violence capital will use when confronted with real opposition--it makes watergate look like nothing. Remember the annhilitation of the PKI in 1965 or think about the growing carnage in IraqI just wish that Gen Giap had with the miners in 1984. It was noi orginary strije--it altered a world --and it is a testament to the book that Arthur is still around to organize opposition to "turbocapitalism"

I'd like to begin with a disclaimer: I broadly share the politics of the author and I'm sure this influenced my rating. ...I would have preferred much MORE detail, ...In particular, I think it is regrettable that there is no appendix which gives verbatim extended extracts of the original Mirror and Cook reports to which the book is a rebuttal. (To be fair, this might not be the fault of the author -- it's possible that copyright considerations prevented the inclusion of such material. However, even if this is so, he should have mentioned it in the preface or acknowledgements.) I was somewhat put off by the author's unstinting admiration for Arthur Scargill. Yes, he has suffered a lot, and I'm sympathetic, too. But surely many of his unpopular stances (such as his adamant refusal to condemn any picket-line violence) could have been subjected to greater scrutiny. Despite these critical comments, I believe that this book is essential reading since it is a case study which constitutes a critical contribution to a much under-explored topic -- mainstream media coverage of the Industrial Left. I was also very impressed by the long list of works which Milne referred to. This gave me the impression that Milne had a great deal of background information to work with, and further motivated me to consult these other works.

4 out of 5 stars Scargill and Heathfield were heroes of the first order!.......1999-10-29

Before I go on to say what a fabulous piece of work this is, I must stress one criticism. I felt Milne went into perhaps too much detail about what happened to 'this million' or 'that million' with reference to where Scargill and Heathfield hid the NUM's donations. Although interesting, I would like to also have seen Arthur himself give a closer look at his own perspective of events surrounding the strike. I feel this would ultimately have been more revealing about the nature of the whole smear campaign than so much time and print being spent on the detail.

What double dealing and hypocrisy from everyone from the Soviets to Kinnock though! I'm sure I feel more angry at the likes of Ron Todd (not mentioned much actually) Neil Kinnock and the whole TUC and Labour Party than I ever will about Thatcher and her despicable (but at least openly hostile)cronies.

Anyway, I was moved by the miners' story. I am ashamed on behalf of all the British people who voted for, and kept voting for, Thatcher.

I am only sad that a movie has not been made based on this book. It's nail-biting stuff reminiscent of Forsyth so why is there so little literature and film on what happened? Where's Ken Loach? Come on Ken, get a film made of it all!

                                                        Great piece of work Seamas!
