      Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Top Business Guide to Webcasting.......2004-08-07

This outstanding book provides information on the business opportunities webcasting can bring. It is a must read for anyone thinking about using webcasting for business, whether as part of a major corporation's internal training program or as a stand-alone live internet radio station.

Starting with an introduction for webcasting, the book defines three types of webcasting: streaming, on-demand, and push technologies. The discussion describes each of these technologies, providing excellent examples of how each are used and comparing them with similar off-line technologies (such as TV).

The book continues with a look at the opportunities webcasting can provide in business, including which type to use and whether the use of webcasting is feasible. Other chapters discuss developing both an effective website and the content to be webcast, how to market the webcast, and issues with managing the website. Information about important considerations such as maintaining the website, measuring the success of the webcast, and budgeting for various types of webcasting are included.

In the final section of the book, the author provides an excellent review of the legal and regulatory issues involved with webcasting when the book was published in April of 1998.

The author is Peggy Miles, President of Intervox Communications and an internationally known expert in webcasting. A founding member of the International Webcasting Association, she also moderates several key mailing lists supporting the webcasting industry. There are simply few more knowledgeable people of the webcasting industry.

Throughout the book, the author uses case studies to highlight her points. These case studies provide clear examples of webcasting ideas and techniques that are working for others.

The book's treatment of webcasting technologies focuses more on the background and potential business uses of each, rather than on specific products. As a result, the book does not suffer from the technological obsolescence that is apparent in other books about the rapidly evolving webcasting and streaming audio industry.

I most highly recommend this book for those interested in using webcasting technology in any business setting, from a traditional radio station planning to webcast their programming to a project officer assigned to create a webcast to give the company the competitive edge possible with webcasting.

Review by Mike Powers, Radideo.com Guide, December 1999

1 out of 5 stars Overview of industry at best!.......2000-06-21

The book is dated! lets face it, 1998 when this book was published is history in this business. The Author does cover the industry as a whole but if you are looking for a current book with "Meat" you will be dissatified as I was.

3 out of 5 stars Overview central - not much for detailed help........2000-01-11

Peggy Miles knows a lot about Webcasting - and this book which is a bit dated today gives you a good overview of the issues and thinking behind Webcasting but it is NOT the place to go to find out hardcore information about doing an actual cast yourself. There is no real discussion of the server setup, no real discussion of audio issues and how to do remotes. If you're planning on doing producing a Webcast it's a book worth having but you will need a lot more than this book to really feel you know what to do.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book! Good Cases.......1999-10-12

Fabulous Book...it's the next step in broadcasting

      5 out of 5 stars It's a great book. Rich in content........1998-05-28

Very few times I have read a book so well prepared and presented. For people who has some knowledge about Internet but not very much informed about the webcasting techniques, its a great book to read. Certainly worth the money you pay for that.

        Book Description

Hirofumi Uzawa's theoretical framework addresses three major problems concerning global warming and other environmental hazards. First, it considers all phenomena involved with global environmental issues that exhibit externalities of one kind or another. Secondly, it covers global environmental issues involving international and intergenerational equity and justice. Lastly, it deals with global environmental issues concerning the management of the atmosphere, the oceans, water, soil, and other natural resources having to be decided by a consensus of affected countries.

        Download Description

In this book, Professor Uzawa modifies and extends the theoretical premises of orthodox economic theory to those broad enough to be capable of analyzing the phenomena related to environmental disequilibrium, particularly global warming, and of finding institutional arrangements and policy measures that may bring about a more optimal state where natural and institutional components are harmoniously blended. He constructs a theoretical framework in which three major problems concerning global environmental issues may effectively addressed. First, all phenomena involved with global environmental issues exhibit externalities of one kind or another. Secondly, global environmental issues involve international and intergenerational equity and justice. Thirdly, global environmental issues concern the management of the atmosphere, the oceans, water, soil, and other natural resources that have to be decided by a consensus of all affected countries.

          Book Description

Global warming is widely considered to be one of the most serious environmental problems for current and future generations. Moreover, the apparent failure of the Kyoto protocol to effect a meaningful reduction in greenhouse gas emissions has increased the importance of economic research into new ways to control global warming. In this exhaustive study, the authors break new ground by integrating cutting edge insights on global warming from three different perspectives: game theory, cost-effectiveness analysis and public choice.

For each perspective the authors provide an overview of important results, discuss the theoretical consistency of the models and assumptions, highlight the practical problems which are not yet captured by theory and explore the different applications to the various problems encountered in global warming. They demonstrate how each perspective has its own merits and weaknesses, and advocate an integrated approach as the best way forward. They also propose a research agenda for the future which encompasses the three methods to create a powerful tool for the analysis and resolution of global pollution problems.

Surveying a large amount of literature and providing plentiful examples of potential applications, this extensive book combines three branches of economic research on global warming into one accessible volume. It will be widely read by students and scholars in environmental courses, environmental and resource economists, and those working in governmental and non-governmental organizations concerned with international environmental problems.

            Book Description

Greenhouse Economics: Values and Ethics examines the serious nature of global warming. In particular it explores the responsibilities the current generation might have to its successors, and how this should influence our economic approach. It challenges current literature on greenhouse economics, which has tended to shy away from these issues. The book will be of interest to advanced undergraduates and post graduates in environmental economics and ecological economics.

                    Book Description

Is the theory of money that underlies most modern macroeconomics well-grounded? What determines the value of a currency, and how is the state's power over its currency related to its ability to stabilize prices and employment? Charles Goodhart's classic paper `The Two Concepts of Money: Implications for the Analysis of Optimal Currency Areas' which first raised these questions is reprinted here, and the distinguished authors expand its line of argument and comment on its central themes. The issues discussed are of fundamental importance in contemporary monetary theory and policy.

The State, the Market and the Euro presents two sharply contrasting theories of money - Chartalist and Metallist - and the resulting equally sharply contrasting approaches to macroeconomic policy.

Monetary, financial and political economists will find this book of great interest as will policymakers, financial analysts and journalists.

Communication coach Tony Jeary estimates that we make one hundred presentations every day. He tells readers, "Whether you are talking to a soccer coach or potential client, the way you present your thoughts and ideas to people have a profound effect on the shape of your life." Jeary paves the road to friendly persuasion with theory and practice in Life is a Series of Presentations.

Drawing upon established research in the psychology of influence and neuro-linguistic programming, he guides readers to define their "presentation universe" by using a "3 Dimension" (what-why-how) outline. Although Jeary introduces eight general practices of successful presenters, he shines in describing the practical nuances of presentations including how to: do homework to understand an audience, cut tensions that interfere with rapport, give an audience breathing space, handle hecklers, wrestle stage fright to the ground, and build a presentation arsenal of anecdotes.

A call to self-awareness adds depth to his strategies. For example, one insightful chapter lists eight inhibitors (such as perfectionism, desire to please, aloofness, and good student syndrome) that sabotage presentations. Another section focuses on the anatomy of how to say "thank-you"--and what it communicates about a speaker's self regard. At times, the chapters suffer from too many theories backing up Jeary's smart suggestions. But this is an insightful book on how to change someone's mind. --Barbara Mackoff

5 out of 5 stars Good book, if you are not a professional presenter........2006-08-13

I'm not a professional presenter, but as a manager I'm constantly faced with this challenge. The book is the first one I purchase on the subject and I'm quite pleased with what I red. His tips are well presented and structured with useful real world examples. The reading is easy, logical and builds up. Overall I definitely think is worth the money. Again, it may not be material for a professional, but if you want to improve your daily presentations (very interesting point of view that this book introduces) and sail a little easier in life, definitely worth your money.

As daily presentation he points out that every time we have an important speech (and for him this may be you daily review with your peers, boss, staff, or a chat with your neighbors, wife, etc) if you spend a little time preparing for this you can gain tremendously. It makes sense, and is actually very wise. Something we take for granted and pay very little attention. I've already started to "prepare" for phone calls with my boss and staff. Runs much easier and I'm gaining trust from my staff and growing under my boss's eyes.

                        5 out of 5 stars Good read....great advice...a keeper! .......2006-05-02

I'm a pretty experienced presenter (to groups and one-on-one) and I found this book quite helpful. For anyone whose success depends on their ability to influence, you'll want to read this book. Many, many good points--especially the emphasis on preparation. Most people give lip-service to preparation, Tony lives it! The stories are great and teach a lot. It's an easy read...and was definitely worth my time.

For people looking for help (especially) with formal presentations, I'd also recommend You Are The Message, by Roger Ailes.

                        2 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......2005-07-20

I was expecting a book on presentations and was disappointed. The book had some anecdotes about the author's life that were okay but I was left uninspired. Of course, every encounter you have in business can be judged just as if you were doing a presentation, but this needs to be the subject of a whole book? I don't think so.

Wrong book for the right person; wrong person for the right book.

4 out of 5 stars Good information but ..........2004-11-15

The author uses the book to sell us that everything we do is a presentation. He is right of course, but I like his more simple, to the point 136 Effective Presenation Tips and Inspire Any Audience. A lot of the same information in a more useable format.

5 out of 5 stars Packed with Knowledge!.......2004-08-04

The book jacket bills author Tony Jeary as "coach to America's top CEOs." It doesn't identify them, but the author clearly has a certain bold presentational style, and stressing his identity as a expert coach could be both a strategic and an educational tactic. The book's content is evergreen, a mixture of hortatory slogans and amusing anecdotes, all designed to make you a better presenter - whether your audience is one listener or an auditorium full of people. The author's advice is, for the most part, solid, detailed, practical and conservative. Don't be too put off by a few dated examples (Bill Clinton and Gary Condit) and if you're pressed for time just read the handy lists of "very important points" that close each chapter. We assure you that you can't waste time reading this book. It's that useful.

                          Book Description

Why does your mouth suddenly go dry, your throat tighten, your face get hot, and your knees buckle when you have to address a group of people? The old story goes that more people are afraid of public speaking than they are of death. So people at a funeral would prefer to be the person in the casket than the person delivering the eulogy!

I'm a little biased because my instructor for this course IS the author, but I learned a lot from this text as well as taking his class, and I highly recommend it not only for students of public speaking but also for anyone who is required to make presentations at work, school, etc. Very well written, useful, and easy to understand and apply.

This is the best. I use Shut Up & Speak in all my public speaking classes AND it's the basis for many of my writing courses. This is a great book, and I wish I had it when I was in college. Get this book! It will be great reference for your teaching and for your own public speaking.

This is John Sheirer, the author of this book. This edition is the old one originally done by McGraw-Hill but now out of print. It has since been republished in a revised edition by iUniverse, so look for that one instead. It's a very practicle, readable, brief book about giving speeches. If you want to give better speeches, I promise you'll enjoy the book and be a better public speaker. Thanks!

In addition to being carefully and throughtfully written, it's full of tips and strategies for dealing with complicated reporting situations. I couldn't recommend it more highly.
