In the eighteenth century, Virginia's Shenandoah Valley became a key corridor for America's westward expansion through the Cumberland Gap. Known as "New Virginia," the region west of the Blue Ridge Mountains set off the world of the farmer from that of the planter, grain and livestock production from tobacco culture, and a free labor society from a slave labor society. In The Planting of New Virginia Warren Hofstra offers the first comprehensive geographical history of one of North America's most significant frontier areas. By examining the early landscape history of the Shenandoah Valley in its regional and global context, Hofstra sheds new light on social, economic, political, and intellectual developments that affected both the region and the entire North American Atlantic world.
Paying special attention to the Shenandoah Valley's backcountry frontier culture, Hofstra shows how that culture played a unique role in the territorial struggle between European empires and Native American nations. He weaves together the broad cultural and geographic threads that underlie the story of the valley's place in the early European settlement of eastern North America. He also reveals the distinctive ways in which settlers shaped the valley's geography during the eighteenth century, a pattern that evolved from "discrete open-country neighborhoods" into a complex "town and country settlement" that would come to characterize -- and in many ways epitomize -- middle America.

17th century French royal Garden design.......1999-01-13
This is a specialized book for those interested in architecture and/or period garden design from 17th century France. Marly was a favorite creation of The Sun King, Louis XIV. Built in a secluded narrow valley not far from Versailles, it tried to create an informal palace where the King and favored courtiers could live a more informal existance not governed by strict court formality as practiced at Versailles. The main features were a Royal Pavilion for the King and his family and a series of small square buildings for quests from the court. The iconology was based on the Zodiac. The facades of the buildings featured "painted" architucture. But the main features were the gardens.
This book has a very brief description of the Royal Pavilion with two elevations and partial floor plans. The real focus is on reproductions of hundreds of color drawings (created in the 17th century) of the multitude of walks, bosquets, fountains, pools and open air "rooms" created by the "gardener king" Louis XIV. There are even multiple plans of the same sites as they evolved over time.
A well done volumn, but again of very specialized interest. There are very few books on Marly as a chateau, as it did not long survive the French Revoultion. Today the site is used a public park, but the elaborate gardens, statues and palace are long gone.

In this paper, we apply the mesoeconomic approach to examine the efficiency wage hypothesis. With the traditional formulation of the efficiency wage hypothesis, we show that under certain conditions, the economy has a continuum of equilibria and that nominal shocks can have real effects depending on the firms' expectations. With a modified formulation of the efficiency wage hypothesis and increasing return to scale, we capture the weak positive correlation between real wage and employment and show that nominal shocks may have real effects in an economy without a continuum of equilibria.

The book's last publication was 1992...it's soooo far behind the times as far as the technology part is concerned. She did not even mention Legal Software that a lot of lawyers use now-a-days...called PRO DOC. SO it's a sort of good reference book if you overlook the date of it and it also being behind the times.
This book is great for LA's learning the ropes........2006-08-26
I really love this book. I've been a Legal Assistant for only 2 years and I find that this book gives a clear understanding as to the how and why legal documents are prepared. Especially when preparing documents with 3rd party defendents/plaintiffs and also headings for Infant Compromise cases. I've added it to my Legal Reference Library and sit's on my desk with my CPLR. I'm currently in school working on my associates degree in Paralegal Studies and at the ripe "young" age of 48...I think I've found my niche.
What a Great Helpful Book.......2005-08-27
This book is so wonderful and helpful. I just started working in a law firm doing litigation and I knew nothing. This was a total foreign language to me. The book is laid out so easy to read and is so interesting it keeps your attention. I highly recommend this book to everybody. Even just to keep as a reference book. It is very helpful. I hope one day they make a Strictly New York book.

... the reason it wouldn't show specific court documents is because each state has VERY different rules for how documents must be presented. Your local legal secretaries association should have a more explicit reference guide showing exactly how pleadings, etc. should look for your state. I think you're missing the point of the book if you're expecting that kind of information.
Very Good Beginner or Refresher Source.......2004-01-19
This comprehensive guide to the legal office offers much to those who are just starting their careers as legal secretaries or for those who have been away from the field for a few years and need a refresher. In addition, secretaries in general law offices may find the specialty sections helpful when preparing documents for unusual situations. The information is more current than not and is clearly presented, including short glossaries of Latin and English legal terms. However, Ms. DeVries omitted criminal law practice from her areas of specialty section and neglected to discuss the various legal-specific software programs available.
Recommended as a general source.
