A narrative jewelry description, a methodology for research, and much more.......2005-09-06
Maybe you think the fine art of jewelry appraising is one of determining value alone - but there's so much more to the skill, as Registered Master Valuer and jewelry historian Anna Miller reveals in Illustrated Guide To Jewelry Appraising 3rd Edition: Antique, Period & Modern. Her updated, expanded new third edition combines case studies and typical valuation challenges with key documents to aid in the pricing process, instructions on how to do a narrative jewelry description, a methodology for research, and much more. Loaded with practical, technical data, Illustrated Guide To Jewelry Appraising should not be missed by any serious jewelry collector.
Illustrated Guide to Jewelry Appraising, 3rd Edition, Antique, Period, & Modern.......2005-08-13
As advertised, no problems whatsoever!
"The Nuts & Bolts" of Appraisal Practice!.......2000-07-02
Anna Miller, in her recently updated version (9-99) of "The Illustrated Guide to Jewelry Appraising", gives a novice or a professional some expert information in this edition. The concepts and principles section alone is worth the price of the book, but her book also covers everthing from making the "correct identification" to tips on the appraisal document itself. Also included is supplemental info. on antique jewelry, estimating values and appraisal narrative, plus weight estimation formulas for unusual diamond cuts. I would suggest her book to anyone with an interest in appraising or anyone who has the need to understand the process of jewelry evaluation.
Book Description
Making Documentary Films and Reality Videos is the perfect text for students of filmmaking who would like to make a documentary. Barry Hampe, who has made more than 150 documentary films and videos, traces the two main approaches to documentary--recording behavior and re-creating past events-and shows students how to do both effectively. Covering all the steps, from conceptualization to completion, the book includes chapters on visual evidence; documentary ethics; why reality is not enough; budgeting; and casting, crew, and equipment selection.
Customer Reviews:
Great Introductory Book.......2007-03-31
I took a two week documentary filmmaking course recently and this book was our text. The majority of the class had no prior experience with making a movie of any sort so this book became our life. I felt it was very easy to comprehend and gave ALOT of great advice. For those who did have experience in filmmaking, which included shooting, editing, and distrubution, this was a refresher for them. Overall I'd say it was a great reference book to rely on.
More like "documentaries for dummies"........2007-01-05
If you have absolutely no experience whatsoever in writing to tell a story, filmaking, photojournalism, videography or communicating in any significant way, this book will be helpful if you're suddenly called upon to produce a documentary film or video.
The advice given here is very basic and really doesn't have all that much to do with making a documentary. For example, Hampe describes the roles of the people who might be found on a typical documentary crew, such as the scriptwriter and camera operator. In sum, this is really a book that describes the entire process of creating a documentary from coming up with an idea, capitalizing it, putting a crew together and so on. It really is for someone who has absolutely no experience whatsoever - and while there are many people who may dream of making a documentary, this book will not provide them with the experience they actually need.
The book is also increasingly outdated. Almost all of the technology Hampe describes for lighting, capturing images and sound, editing has been superceded.
The good thing about the book is that it is thorough: Hampe really does cover every step. But its odd that a book on documentary and reality video creation has not a single illustration. Very strange. Another thing in Hampe's favor is his writing style. Except for way too much patting himself on the back for his own work, Hampe writes in a clear manner.
Overall, this is a quick read and useful to those who have no experience whatsoever with the film making process, but have dreams of making documentaries. This book will not really teach you anything about actually making a documentary, but it does an okay job of describing the process.

good book.......2006-08-24
great book for his main points regarding the style and elements one should have in the documentary, mostly revolvong around the point of not having too many 'talking head' interviews and 'showing' the point more,,, the book isn't relevant at all regarding technologies, however, as it seems to be written before 1998 or so,,, but it's probably helpful to see everything from the past,,,
overall a great book, i think, for someone like me who is just starting out and doesn't know where to begin,, this book definitely has given me a great idea of the directions i want to be heading in,
A very helpful introduction to the world of documentaries.......2006-07-03
I found this book extremely useful and does as it claims-- covers all aspects of documentary production. Although written intially before NLE, it has adequately been updated to cover NLE. I found the planning part very useful but had to make my own notes to organize the author's thoughts. Otherwise would have deserved 4 stars.
Understandable.......2006-04-04
This book was an invaluable reference when I found myself (unexpectedly and quite unwillingly) involved in the production of a documentary. I'm a CPA-turned-housemover, and I could understand it. Enough said.

Product Description
You see them on the video shelves, with titles such as Domestic Strangers, The Bride of Frank, The Blood Between Us, Strawberry Estates and Sandman. Skeptically, perhaps, you rent one and slip it into the VCR. Hey, you think, this isn't so bad--sometimes actually quite good. Suddenly, you discover that there is a whole range of movies from filmmakers operating outside the studio system that have their own attractions that the big budget fare can t match. You have, of course, discovered the world of independent filmmaking. Intrigued, you begin thinking that maybe you could do this, maybe you could make an independent feature film. In this work, J.R. Bookwalter, Ronnie Cramer, Mike Gingold, Eric Stanze, Steve Ballot, and 20 others tell what it is really like to make an independent feature. Covering such topics as the script, equipment, actors, publicity, distribution, all facets of production, and budgeting, these indie filmmakers give a virtual how-to for those interested in joining them or just learning more about how those interesting titles end up on video store shelves.
Customer Reviews:
I was looking for more.......2004-01-07
I dont mean to let my 3 star rating discourage anyone from reading this book. Its a good book, with utter sincerity from all indie film makers who participated in putting it together.
However, I felt that the amount of total information I got from reading this book, did not justify the price I paid for it.
Also, except for a few tidbits here and there, there was nothing that I couldnt have myself figured out once I started to think seriously of my movie making venture.
Movies for Amatuers.......2000-04-26
This is a great book for the beginner. Being a novice at movie making I was amazed at all the choices and formats available. Throughout the book there is tons of information to help get you going in the right direction. Interviews abound with independent filmmakers relating to all aspects of movie making as well as some commentary on how they approached the task. The book seems to be slanted toward horror films but most of the info seems universal. There is a section discussing camera type pros and cons that is worth the cost of the book in itself. I was particularly happy that the info is current and the cameras talked about are not obsolete. Sets, actors, editing and even marketing are covered making this a very comprehensive and valuable guide.
This book was well worth the dough!.......1999-06-01
This book was extremely enlightening and inspirational to my friends and I. We want to make movies, but have had a tough time raising the bread to do so. After absorbing this tome, we're ready to go for it! This beast covers it all: from scripting, shooting, special effects, cost-effecient video formats, actors, and even self-distribution! We are psyched to join the ranks of go-getters like Lindenmuth, Tim Ritter, Ron Bonk, and Scooter McCrae! I only hope that our end results will be half as good as these pioneers of the limited-budget video forum. But no matter, we're gonna go for it! So if you're looking for motivation, short-cuts, or just an entertaining read on war stories of mavericks outside of the studio realm, check this book out. These are the guys that are carrying the drive-in movie torch into the new millenium!
A realistic and inspirational look into the film industry........1999-05-27
Lindenmuth's book is a comprehensive and straightforward insight into the independent film circuit. This book is the perfect guide for anyone getting into the film industry and needs the proper assistance of making your film. His book was the perfect tool on how to get started from the basic script to distribution. Lindenmuth discusses tape formats, camera rental, casting calls, working with actors and how the video box art can help to sell your final film. The book is very explanatory and the format makes it easier to read due to the organization. Not only do we receive insight from the director himself, but he interviews a handful of other independent filmmakers. The questions are the type of questions the beginning filmmaker, as myself, ponders when it comes to the stages of filmmaking. I have read many books on the making of films and one of my favorites was Robert Rodriguez, until now. Lindenmuth makes my goals of becoming a sucessful filmmaker realistic and attainable. He not once lets us feel we need millions of dollars to make some big Hollywood film. If you were to read one book on this subject, then read Lindenmuth's book.
This book could be very useful!.......1999-02-23
NYC filmmaker Kevin J. Lindenmuth asked 25 other low budget indy regional directors a series of questions and assembled the candid responses into ten chapters (on scripts, film schools, budgets, publicity, distribution...). Unlike some similar more self serving books by lone directors, I think this could be very useful if you think you're brave, foolish or talented enough to make your own feature.

Book Description
Of all the areas of contemporary thought, economics seems the most resistant to the destabilizing effects of postmodernism. Yet, David Ruccio and Jack Amariglio argue that one can detect, within the diverse schools of thought that comprise the discipline of economics, "moments" that defy the modernist ideas to which many economists and methodologists remain wedded. This is the first book to document the existence and to explore the implications of the postmodern moments in modern economics.
Ruccio and Amariglio begin with a powerful argument for the general relevance of postmodernism to contemporary economic thought. They then conduct a series of case studies in six key areas of economics. From the idea of the "multiple self" and notions of uncertainty and information, through market anomalies and competing concepts of value, to analytical distinctions based on gender and academic standing, economics is revealed as defying the modernist frame of a singular science. The authors conclude by showing how economic theory would change if the postmodern elements were allowed to flourish.
A work of daring analysis sure to be vigorously debated, Postmodern Moments in Modern Economics is both accessible and relevant to all readers concerned about the modernist straightjacket that has been imposed on the way economics is thought about and practiced in the world today.
Customer Reviews:
Keynes's definition of uncertainty is not postmodern.......2004-10-18
The authors of this book,Ruccio and Amariglio(RA),lack the technical training in mathematics, statistics, probability and logic needed to follow the analysis of Keynes's development of the concepts of the weight of the evidence,w,and uncertainty,u,which were developed in the A Treatise on Probability(TP)in 1921 and the General Theory(GT)in 1936,respectively.RA's book contains three major flaws. The first flaw is RA's failure to use Keynes's definition of the weight of the evidence specified by Keynes on p.315 of the TP.w is defined to be an element of the set of numbers defined on the unit interval [0,1].Thus,0<=w<=1.Keynes is the first scholar in history to define an index to rank and/or measure the weight of the evidence.w measures the completeness and/or reliability of the total amount of potential evidence available on which a decision maker can estimate either a point estimate ,in some special cases or,ingeneral,an interval estimate of the probability, which lies BETWEEN a lower bound and an upper bound.Again,Keynes is the first scholar in history to put forth a coherent systematic approach for the calculation of interval estimates based on the earlier work of George Boole. In the GT,u=f(w).u and w are inversely(negatively)related. Thus, if w decreases,u increases and if w increases,u decreases. The reader should note that Keynes could have used any number of different terms instead of uncertainty.Keynes could have used other words or terms, such as vagueness, unclearness, ambiguity, fuzziness, unreliability, etc. No matter what relevant term he could of used ,you would end up with an inverse relationship.Uncertainty of the evidence must then be a range ,starting from complete or total uncertainty of the evidence(w=o so u=1)and declining to great uncertainty to acute uncertainty to severe uncertainty to moderate uncertainty to mild uncertainty to little uncertainty to no uncertainty[w=1,so u=0].RA reject Keynes's definitions and instead substitute the contradictory definitions of GLS Shackle,Paul Davidson,Tony Lawson and Anna Carabelli, which define uncertainty to mean complete or total uncertainty alone.Keynes used the word ignorance to specify the case of complete or total uncertainty. He reached the conclusion on p.310 of the TP that the case of decision making under ignorance was not a major problem in the real world. In the real world,it is the case of decision making with only partial or incomplete information that causes all the problems for a decision maker.Unfortunately,RA,in adopting the erroneous, extreme case of Shackle,Davidson,Lawson and Carabelli, that uncertainty is total(u=1 and w=0),totally and completely eviserate uncertainty as applicable in the real world. This extreme post Keynesian view of uncertainty is even more extreme than the classical-neoclassical belief that w=1(the case of risk only). The second flaw in RA is their acceptance of the badly flawed argument, first made by Frank Ramsey in two book reviews of Keynes's TP in 1922 and 1926,that Keynes's use of the terms "nonnumerical" and "nonmeasurable" in chapter 3 of the TP meant that it was not possible, with some special exceptions,to use numbers to quantify an estimate of probability.Supposedly, this meant that the BEST a decision maker could do would be to ordinally rank probabilities SOME of the time. There is no support for this silly and grossly incorrect interpretation of Keynes's path breaking work on interval(set) estimates done in chapters 15 and 17 of the TP.Keynes also clearly alerted the reader to the importance of these chapters in chapters 3,5 and 10 of the TP.Of course, it is most likely that intervals will overlap. In these cases, problems of incomparability, nonrankability and incommensurability OF THE INTERVALS will occur if the standard ordering relations ,such as less than or equal to,greater than or equal to ,or equal to are used. These two errors in RA appear continuously throughout the book.On pp.78-82,the above two errors are committed numerous times .RA's third error follows from errors 1 and 2.It is a combination of nihilism and the antinomian fallacy that all theories are period or time specific and hence always relative to the specific social, legal, political and economic institutions of a particular historical epoch or time period. The conclusion is that general theories are not possible. It is impossible for this reviewer to find any positive redeeming value in this book .However,a reader may want to read this book to measure the degree of ignorance of the economics profession concerning the technical breakthroughs made by J M Keynes almost a century ago.The only other comparable case of economists ignoring pathbreaking work is the case of Benoit Mandelbrot. His work, started in the early 1950's,presents overwhelming evidence that a decision maker can not rely on the normal probability distribution to calculate outcomes in financial markets.Economists still claim that you can.
not your father's modernist economics..........2004-10-05
In most books exploring postmodernism's development and impact on the social sciences, economics is almost always left out of the disciplines examined because it is assumed that economics is buried in an intellectual grave of modernism and the Cartesian subject. This book flies in the face of such a view and reconfigures how economics as a field should be understood, as well as how its subdisciplines fit together (feminist economics, institutionalist economics, Keynesian/post-Keynesian economics, etc.). Ruccio and Amariglio will help you understand how various and seemingly disconnected economic subdisciplines are actually a response to a theoretical shift in which economists were forced to acknowledge certain sticky questions: how does uncertainty transform the perfectly masterful `rational economic man'? how do feminist challenges transform the central actor of neoclassical economics?
While some authors examine how post-structuralism shows its face in the writings of a few heterodox economists swimming against the tide in the `dismal science' of economics, Ruccio and Amariglio describe how postmodern questions about knowledge and subjectivity show up in economic authors who would never dream of touching postmodern theory. In a remarkable way, this book `reads' economics and discovers that despite its pretenses to a high modernist theory of the subject and knowledge, postmodernism has crept in the back door.

Customer Reviews:
i guess some people need stuff like this..........2007-02-26
This book is okay for some people I suppose. I had to read this for a class, and it's not something I would normally seek out. The author is the editor of the ABA Journal, but isn't a lawyer.
To me, this seems like common sense written, printed, bound & sold. I naturally try to live a stress free life, anyway. Instead of buying this book, I would just have soon spent the money on some beers with friends--which I consider a much more effective way of dealing with stress, rather than reading what some guy with a collection of stories from his buddies thinks is the path to mental wellbeing.
If you're someone who is not very emotionally-minded (like me), I think you will probably agree with my bottom line assessment of the book: "meh".
As relevant as ever.......2004-07-18
OK, it has been a while now since this book came out, and since I read it cover to cover. (in the interests of full disclosure, I am in the book. But if you begin this book, you to will be compelled to keep reading! Honest!)
Anyone who is a lawyer, or married to one, needs to read this book. It explains what is missing in the legal profession and which eats away at those of us in or near it.
I think Steve was very courageous to pitch this as an article to the ABA Journal. (It was then to be entitled Law and Spirituality, but it became a book and took on a life of its own.) As a journalist closely attuned to, but not in, the profession, has a finely tuned ear for the symphony that is the legal world. As a journalist for the leading legal journal in this country, he has been attuned to the profession for a long time. he asked a few questions and folkowed the aanswers, an-- I think-- hit a mother lode.
Following the symphony metaphor, this book hits all the right notes-- Steve has perfect pitch. Law, and lawyers, need healing-- wholeness, balance. The public hates us and many of us hate ourselves. The stats for suicide, subtsance abuse and divorce are ugly. I can no longer bear to deal with most of my colleagues.
But a healing has begin due to this book. yes, I did say healing.
Thank you Steve!!! and you-- wondering if you should buy the book. the answer is YES!
A flawed but very valuable work........2001-12-09
Steven Keeva (who is not a lawyer but has spent many years observing and writing about them) here provides an assortment of advice, tips, and real-life examples to help you become a better lawyer and a better person. While I found much of the book to be old news, every 10 pages or so Keeva says something eye-opening, memorable, and truly instructive. The chapters on listening and service were, for me, the real pay-off, and I know I will be going back to them frequently. By contrast, his portrayal of litigators, trials, and especially corporate practice struck me as simplistic and a bit stereotyped. In addition, those who are unreceptive to the touchy-feely approach to problem-solving should be warned that this book is nothing if not touchy-feely. That said -- and notwithstanding my other qualifications -- this book is an *important* contribution to the literature of professionalism and lawyers' "mental hygiene" (as Prof. Stone of Harvard has called it). Since this book is also a quick read, every lawyer and law student who even suspects it may be helpful should give it a try and then keep it close at hand.
Staying in the practice, and enjoying it!.......2000-10-27
Transforming Practices truly is a gift to lawyers, like me, who have been practicing for many years and want to continue practicing law in a satisfying and meaningful way. This book has been one of my best investments, and I keep it on my desk at work. Reading, or in my case rereading, Steven Keeva's inspirational words provides a much needed boost in spirit, and a new way of looking at the legal life, even on a difficult day! My colleagues who have read this book wholeheartedly agree!
Keeva On Cutting Edge Of 21st Century Lawyering.......2000-09-29
Keeva's Transforming Practices is the book that heralds the new model for 21st Century lawyering. A must read for anyone interested in staying relevant and on the cutting edge of law in this fast changing world. Just as the Internet burst into our awareness just a few years ago and has become indispensible, the holistic law approach Keeva writes about will be demanded by millions of people. Those lawyers capable of offering such services will be at the forefront of the emerging legal revolution. For those who do not yet know how to offer such services, Transforming Practices shows you how. Whether on Main Street, USA or here at my firm on Wall Street, clients want and expect the type of lawyering Keeva writes about.
