Behind the Scenes, Moving Look at LIFE.......2001-03-27

This book is full of potential, poorly developed. The softcover version has 47 color and 73 black and white photographs drawn from over 2100 issues of LIFE Magazine. The images are explained in terms of the methods the photographers used to capture the photograph in fairly simple terms. Many wonderful images are reproduced in sizes far too small, and many others are cruelly chopped by the book's center crease. As a result, much potential joy was cut out by the book's designer. Of particular technical interest will be the many shots staged to capture motion in unusual ways.

"The photographs need no explanation . . . . I . . . write about the photographers . . . their methods of working." This book contains 18 new images from the original edition of this work.

Knowing that a big part of LIFE's appeal was its large page size, why would anyone ever create a softcover version with a page size much smaller than the original? Has cost-consciousness totally overwhelmed aesthetic concerns among photography publishers?

Despite the small pages, often even smaller images, and painfully placed center creases, some powerful photography survives as being worthy of your time. The caption notes could have been a little more detailed for my taste, and there was certainly space remaining for more material to have been included.

I would also like to single out the photograph looking down Dolly Parton's cleavage as one of the tackiest images I have ever seen in a photography book.

The best images are those that evoke fundamental human feeling like AIDS, Grief, Buchenwald, and C.P.O. Graham Jackson. Many of the photographs involving movement are technical tours de force such as Picasso, Dali, and Eclipse. I also liked the ones with humor, like Streaker. The sense of nature's awesome presence was profound and wonderful in Earthrise and Embryo.

After you finish examining the images that you can enjoy in this collection, I suggest that if you like photojournalism you start a scrapbook of images that move you. In that way, you won't have to rely on what a book designer does in the future to preserve wonderful photographs.

Appreciate the world around you by observing it more closely. In this way, you can deepen and extend your humanity . . . and your mind.

The title says it all as this cogent work opens with a declaration of independence from sociobiology, and proceeds to a reexamination of social evolutionary thinking, the idea of 'evolution' in free fall. Ay there's the rub, what does the free floating concept of (social) evolution really mean, and what is its true relation with organismic evolution? This question has never found an answer, because even the theory of organismic evolution is incomplete. To escape the clutches of E.O. Wilson is not to escape those of S. J. Gould, and the assumptions of basic Darwinism still bedevil analysis even as the banishment of all ideas of progress simply compounds the confusion. For the idea of progress in the docket of ideology, in addition to its excision from all discussion of random evolution, leaves all in confusion. We should a more complex theory to explain progression in one form, as macroevolution, and the individual's actions, as freedom,in another, as a sort of microevolution. In any case, we are still 'looking for the answer',without the gimmicks of sociobiological reductionism and this book explores a host of interesting avenues in a liberating, though eclectic mix of themes from Veblen to Marx. Very stimulating work, and some real nose-thumbing at the Social Darwinist plot thickener from the right wing Darwin gang. Still, one is left with the question, where is the theory? A more universal history might give us the clue to an answer.

It's been quite a while since I first reviewed this pamphlet, and predictably, I return to this page and find that the majority of the reviews and ratings of the reviews are as bogus as the books themselves. A quick review of this feedback should convince everyone that the author has a serious integrity problem. Save your money and your time-this publication will teach you nothing.

Condescending Rip-off.......2000-08-30

I purchased this set of books and returned them to Amazon, insulted that I had spent even a few dollars on such condescending pablum.

The information is overly simple and, in some places, quite outdated technically. Book 1, about starting a business, is not so bad, but you could certainly purchase a better book on the general topic of starting a business for probably less money.

Book 2 is simply technical trash. If you truly know nothing about making websites, you should probably either hire someone or else or use a generator, like GoLive Cyberstudio or even MS Frontpage. The little bit of HTML you might learn from this book isn't enough to get you anywhere, and furthermore, you could find a better HTML primer on the web for free (just run a search for "learn HTML").

Hello, I collect rare coins and stamps as a hobby. Since I occasionally sell items I have at collectors conventions, I toyed with the idea of putting up some information on the Internet since my area of influence was currently limited by geography. Well, it paid off. Now my hobby has turned into a small business since I have a much greater reach to people that have similar interests. So many more people come looking for *me* now!

A nice resource at the beginning.......1999-12-23

I thought the beginning was great. It really showed me exactly what I needed to incorporate and begin a business, but it didn't go as far as I wanted it to. I wanted some more advanced info. especially when it comes to the operations side of a business, but all in all it wasn't a bad beginning. Just needs a little supplement...
