Henry's book opened up a new world of drawing to me and looks to be - regardless of price - the deal of the century given what some works of similar cost offer the reader or artist.
Henry's astounding level of line quality, and his ability to see - in an elegant way - what should be recorded on the page set his work and this collection of his drawings apart. While they are different in many ways, I put this book up with my Burton Silverman books as an oft' considered reference. Amazing and wonderful just to leaf through.. and fantastic as a learning tool! A Classic!
A master class in figurative drawing.......2007-06-19
As one of the great draughtsman and artists of our time, Mr. Yan has compiled a book which really encapsulates what figure drawing should be all about.
A beautifully laid out book, Mr. Yan covers in a thoughtful and methodical way how to approach drawing the figure in several of the major classical styles, his thought process and step by step instructions on how to do so.
In saying that, his work transcends mere technique and has an energy that comes from being truly free to express one's self. He provides you the tools to do this, the rest is up to you!

The difference between art and replica.......2007-06-10
I have been studying figurative art for several years and own most of the figurative books on the market. The difference between other books and Mr. Yan's book is that other books teach you how to copy the figure where as Mr. Yan's book show you how to create figurative art. The powerful drawings in this book make me think about values in a new way. If you are into figurative drawings, this book is a must have.

Henry Yan's figure drawing gives you a great approach on how to work with lines, proportions and structural shapes to achieve volume in your drawings, but as well to work with a more painterly approach using mass and the use of shadows and lights to shape the form... it's illustrated with great examples of these two approaches, and you'll also see how he combines those two approaches line and mass in his examples.
You will find in this book Henry Yan's different steps to achieve such splendid drawings. Aside the explanations on his method of work, it's abondantly illustrated(portraits as well as figure drawings). There is to me a real quality in his line, composition of image and use of lights. Besides his great technicity,I find his work filled with a search of sensibility and mood in the capture of the model's pose.... that goes beyond just achieving "perfect technicity" so to speak, but in search of what the model's pose and scene inspires you, far more than just simply "copying" things. I have so far never seen a figure drawing book like this, it will defenately remain a source of inspiration to me. His "painterly" approach in his figure drawings is a great inspiration on how to use this method in colored paintings as well. I highly recommend it to anyone interested in figure drawings and in art in general.

Since the 1970s, the practice of financing major private and public sector capital-intensive projects has shifted to an ever-greater reliance on private funding sources, as opposed to direct financing through the issuance of corporate or government bonds. In the 1990s, these financing practices have undergone further changes with the increasing globalization of capital markets, the growth of derivative instruments, and the rapid increase in information technology that enhances cash-management practices. Today's project financing market is increasingly using sophisticated capital market, bank and agency financing mechanisms as well as using derivative instruments for asset and liability management. Thus, financial market innovations are bringing the once separate fields of project financing and international finance more closely together. This is the first book to treat both topics as an interrelated whole, for contemporary project financing cannot be fully understood without a good working knowledge of the international financial markets that have developed the various financing techniques and funding sources being used. The book provides an in-depth description of cross-border project financing as a technique for financing capital-intensive projects, as well as an overview of certain financing and derivative instruments currently available in the global financial markets.
The first part of the book provides an overview of certain funding and derivative instruments currently used in the international financial markets, including a general overview of financial innovations that have occurred in recent decades. Topics covered include an introduction to the syndicated Euro-credit market; an overview of various marketable debt securities actively used in the international financial markets; an introduction to depositary receipt as an innovative way of raising cross-border equity capital; an elaboration of the derivative instruments most commonly used in the project financing arena, including interest rate, currency and commodity swaps; and finally an overview of banks' off-balance sheet activities as a critical driving force for the participation of banks in the international financial and derivative markets.
The second part of the book provides an in-depth analysis of project financing that concentrates on the financier's perspective. Topics covered include a general overview of the project financing industry; a step-by-step description of a typical cross-border project finance transaction; a description of the main characteristics and advantages of project financing as opposed to more traditional corporate lending practices; an overview of appraisal techniques for assessing project financing; a comprehensive analysis of the different risk management techniques used in project financing for reducing, distributing and hedging risks; and a brief overview of certain limited-resource financing schemes. The book includes a special focus on the various stages of the risk management process for project financing, elaborating on the different stages of risk identification, risk assessment, risk reduction, risk distribution and hedging and insurance. The authors also provide a comprehensive glossary of terms relating to international finance and project financing. This book will fulfill the need for an essential text on project financing as well as a professional reference guide.

Jan's book is a must have for anyone seeking to start a home-based secretarial (virtual assistance) business. Her book is full of wonderful advice -- she even shares with her readers the actual forms she uses in her own business. This book is the "Virtual Assistant's" bible!
Definitely Worth a Read!.......2000-05-29
Ms. Melnik has done an excellent job in writing this book. She provides comprehensive information on all aspects of starting your own secretarial service. She assume's the reader is at the very beginnin stages of planning and does a great job going through the entire process, one step at a time!
The only thing I wish there was more information on was operating this business from an internet standpoint.

Ms. Melink writes well and includes much information, however it seems geared toward the resume business, vs. a well-rounded secretarial service. The information on what to charge clients is well written and informative.

Jan's book tells you EVERYTHING you need to know to launch and grow a well organized and well planned secretarial business. It guides you through business organization, assessing personal skills, estimating start-up costs, pricing your services, planning growth, writing your own complete business plan, advertising & promotion, balancing your work life and home life, screening and hiring employees and much, much more.
The book also gives you the advantages and drawbacks of operating a home-based business as well as important comments and much needed sound advice from other secretarial services business owners. There are also lots of samples e.g.: sample zoning permit application, sample expense worksheet form, sample balance sheet form, sample start-up office supply inventory, sample brochure, sample press release, sample flyer, and many, many samples more.
The only information I miss in this book are internet sites one can access for more information and articles, etc., as well as the fax & e-mail addresses of the contacts mentioned in the appendix (this is the only reason I rated the book 4-stars). I consider this kind of information extremely important in today's world.
I am now setting up my own secretarial services business following the guidelines I've found in this book. The book has made the path a lot easier for me because now I know what I have to have (minimum), what I have to do, how I have to do it, where I have to go and how I have to plan. Even though I'm in another country, the book has definitely guided and hinted me in the right direction. I would have gone through a lot of unnecessary struggles without this book. I highly recommend it to anyone thinking of starting a secretarial services business. Everything you need to know about starting and running the business is in this book.
Jan, thanks a lot for writing this book. It has become an indispensable and extremely valuable reference tool for me.
