Handy, but no index?.......2001-11-23

Having recently aquired a Nikon F801/N8008, I bought this book to assist me with both operating the camera and finding accesories for it. The book certainly delivers for the most part, but the lack of an index proves frustrating, especially when you're trying to find information on specific accessories. Furthermore, next to no information is provided on the MF 21 multi-function back, which is an item that most serious users of the F801/N8008 will want to get their hands on. All in all, it's useful to have in your camera bag, but I can't help but feel that the author could have stretched himself a bit further to make this pocket book more complete and easier to refer to.

Total waste of money.......2000-10-28

I bought this book because I lost my owner's manual before I had a chance to learn some of the advanced functions. The author's style is so wordy and obtuse that it might as well have been written in Greek.

Great manual and beginner guide.......2000-05-08

I had lost the manual to my 6006, but found this in my camera back and started reading. It covered the operation of the 6006 very well and provided some very basic tips on using the functionality the camera offers. I found that it was worth reading the sections on other cameras just to pick up additional photography tips.

The book also provides a nicely detail look at the various accessories for your Nikon. It covers flashes and the various additional lenses that are available. I found the section on lenses particularly useful because it talks about when each type of lens is used and discusses the pros and cons of the different lens types.

All in all, a great accessory for your Nikon.

Great manual for N6006, N8008s &N6000.......1999-12-05

This book covers all the functions of each camera, 60 pages for N6006 and N6000, 40 pages for N8008s, and the rest is for all the cameras. This is not a ''how to take good pictures'' book. This is more like a manual with limited examples. If you own one of the cameras and feel like the manual is not good enough, this is the one that you want to keep with.

Since I didn't have an owners manual for my 8008, this book has been a great resource. It explains all camera functions with a small section on flash photography, but doesn't really have a lot more than that.

Every day young people engage in risky behaviors that affect not only their immediate well-being but their long-term health and safety. These well-honed essays apply diverse economic analyses to a wide range of unsafe activities, including teen drinking and driving, smoking, drug use, unprotected sex, and criminal activity. Economic principles are further applied to mental health and performance issues such as teenage depression, suicide, nutritional disorders, and high school dropout rates. Together, the essays yield notable findings: price and regulatory incentives are critical determinants of high-risk behavior, suggesting that youths do apply some sort of cost/benefit calculation when making decisions; the macroeconomic environment in which those decisions are made matters greatly; and youths who pursue high-risk behaviors are significantly more likely to engage in similar behaviors as adults.

This important volume provides both a key data source for public policy makers and a clear affirmation of the usefulness of economic analysis to our understanding of risky behavior.

Transforming the American Dream into Reality.......2003-02-12

America is called the Land of Opportunity because people of all backgrounds are given a chance at advancement through education and hard work, but these opportunities are not available to all students.

Professor Rosenbaum has studied the educational opportunities given to students of low SES (socio-economic status) backgrounds for over 35 years. In this book, he evaluates the adequacy and extent of American vocational education programs and compares them with successful models in other countries such as Japan and Germany. In this analysis, he points out a tragic irony: due to their egalitarian ideals, American schools are uncomfortable with creating a substantial vocational education system and instead offer a college preparatory curriculum to nearly all students, a choice which ends up depriving students of the means to earn a good living.

The American educational system sends the signal to students that they ought attend college: in surveys, most students say that they plan to attend college. At the same time, students have little idea what colleges require: as Prof Rosenbaum's _Making Inequality_ (1976) showed, students were ignorant of basic college application processes. Students do know that community colleges are open to all and perceive that grades don't matter, giving them little incentive to study. Even non-college-bound students also know that employers don't look at high school grades, and so have little incentive to study.

After high school graduation, students enter community colleges ill-prepared for the courses; most students must enroll in remedial courses, which they're paying for, but do not earn college credits. Disappointed with this process, high numbers of students drop out with few or no college credits.

By contrast, in good vocational education programs, students have incentives to do well: teachers develop relationships with employers, who trust their opinions of students, and students see that their performance in the classroom has a direct effect on their employability. In addition, the voc ed curriculum is clearly relevant to the real world, and students gain self-esteem from learning real world job skills such as auto mechanics or computer assembly; making a device work is a clear source of motivation, unlike algebra.

Students in vocational education programs also attain higher levels of competence at the same skills than they would in college preparatory courses. Cognitive psychology studies show that students are often better at solving real-world problems than abstract ones: uneducated Brazilian street children selling fruit on the street are capable of solving complex arithmetic problems, but unable to solve the same problems when phrased in abstract terms.

In sum, the American educational system perpetuates a false egalitarianism through its failure to offer more substantial vocational education programs. Rather than stigmatizing students, vocational education programs empower them to gain competence in fields which are often technically complex and high-paying, and which offer substantially more opportunities for advancement than those jobs open to high school graduates.
