After flipping through the glorious photos of homes by the water , I couldn't wait to read the "meaty" text. I am neither an architect nor an interior designer, but I do dream some day of living on the water. WATERSIDE HOMES will appeal to everyone who loves a water view and longs for the casual lifestyle a home by the water offers. The pictures are beautiful, and the home, many by top well-known designers and architects, are incredible.

Book Description

Waterside Living is an evocative celebration of waterside homes from around the world. From a houseboat on the Seine in Paris to a log cabin in Maine, the homes share an architecture and interior design that are in tune with the waterside setting, with a choice of colours, furniture, and artifacts that brings the qualities of water indoors - whether it is a still life of pebbles or a palette of blues, soft greens, and grays.

5 out of 5 stars Suprisingly Many of these Homes are Afforable........2006-08-13

Living beside the water is kind of a dream that a lot of us have. Well, maybe the dream is for only part of the year. Living on the water in Maine during January, or in Louisiana in August isn't exactly the dream I hold most dear. (The day I left living by the water in Louisiana it was 108 degrees and 85%.)

Then again, I pick up this book, and as the sub-title says there are homes by lakes, rivers, and the sea. There's something about watching the water flow by. Something mesmerizing at watching the ever changing water constantly moving. Even in the houses show here that are in Maine where the lakes freeze every winter, there's the changing of the seasons.

Then when you look at the houses by the pounding surf, or the houseboat in Paris. There's an idea. I wonder what's available in London.

This book is a photographic extravaganza of a bakers dozen home from around the country, around the world. Surprisingly many of them are not the super expensive mansions that so many books seem to prefer. Here are some home that even I might be able to afford.

              Book Description

Rationality and freedom are among the most profound and contentious concepts in philosophy and the social sciences. In two volumes on rationality, freedom, and justice, the distinguished economist and philosopher Amartya Sen brings clarity and insight to these difficult issues. This volume--the first of the two--is principally concerned with rationality and freedom.

Sen scrutinizes and departs from the standard criteria of rationality, and shows how it can be seen in terms of subjecting one's values as well as choices to the demands of reason and critical scrutiny. This capacious approach is utilized to illuminate the demands of rationality in individual choice (including decisions under uncertainty) as well as social choice (including cost benefit analysis and environmental assessment).

Identifying a reciprocity in the relationship between rationality and freedom, Sen argues that freedom cannot be assessed independently of a person's reasoned preferences and valuations, just as rationality, in turn, requires freedom of thought. Sen uses the discipline of social choice theory (a subject he has helped to develop) to illuminate the demands of reason and the assessment of freedom. The latter is the subject matter of Sen's previously unpublished Arrow Lectures included here.

The essays in these volumes contribute to Sen's ongoing transformation of economic theory and social philosophy, and to our understanding of the connections among rationality, freedom, and social justice.

4 out of 5 stars Reducing assumptions about rational choice.......2005-10-01

I found this book refreshing and insightful, it shares Sen's thoughts on how to value freedom as an aspect of choice in and of itself: If I would choose x anyhow, how much does it matter that I also am offered y & z as options.

Additionally he discusses plausible scenarios in which a selection is dependent upon the menu of choices offered e.g., given options of {x,y} I choose x, given options of {x,y,a,b} I choose y.

That said this book is a compendium of papers with the attendant repetition and overlap. The introduction is the best part.

2 out of 5 stars Real Philosophy or Social choice?!?!.......2005-09-24

Yes it's true. The book of Sen it`s too much focused on the "theory of social choice" and it never makes an analysis of freedom and rationality by a pure philosophical point of view, but always by the point of view of the "social choice".

And it's also true that this kind of analysis is often related to the impossibility theorem of Arrow, as all the social choice theory could be reducted to that theorem

I think the title of the book does not say the essence of it, People philosophically intrested in these two concepts should read something else...

1 out of 5 stars Never have so many words been written about so little.......2004-06-06

I read through the 700 pages of this book, including the mathematics, hoping at some point that the Nobel Prize-winning Sen would have something to say about Rationality and Freedom. Alas! I was disappointed. About 500 pages are devoted to an almost entirely vacuous "social choice theory" and in particular Kenneth Arrow's Impossibility Theorem. I was thinking maybe that Sen was doing a "reductio ad absurdum" and at the end, he would offer an alternative approach. Unfortunately not. The salaries of the thousands of academics who are paid to do this stuff should be collected and distributed to poor people in developing countries. A far better use of the money.

                    Description:
Beyond a purely typological distinction between use, option and non-use values, these different environmental values are not treated differently within the concept of Total Economic Value. When expressed in monetary terms from individual preferences, these values are incorporated into a sole approach reasoning in terms of utility. In this paper, we argue that option and non-use values stem from more different levels of choice problems than use values and thus, must be apprehended in a multidimensional framework. We distinguish three levels of choice problem to which various rationality criteria of Social Cost-Benefit Analysis are attached. This allows us to make a distinction between the different components of the value of the environment according to the level of problems to which they're relevant. Thus, we propose to re-interpret the concept of Total Economic Value, particularly option and non-use values, within this multidimensional framework. We present an application of this framework for the selection of preferred highway route (highway A85 in France).

                      Book Description

The philosophy of religion, once considered a deviation from an otherwise analytically rigorous discipline, has flourished over the past two decades. This collection of new essays by twelve distinguished philosophers of religion explores three broad themes: religious attitudes of belief, acceptance, and love; human and divine freedom; and the rationality of religious belief.

4 out of 5 stars A friendly, helpful and industrious colleague.......2002-08-07

John (J. W. N.) Watkins, a decorated naval officer, went to the London School of Economics after the war to study politics. He fell under the influence of Karl Popper and for many years was one of the most productive Popperians. His output spans morals and metaphysics, politics and the methods of explanation in the social sciences, logic, theories of rationality and the philosophy of science. This range of activity is reflected in the nineteen papers collected in his honour.

The essays are grouped in two parts, the first dealing with studies in history and methods of social and political theory. This has contributions from Joseph Agassi, Philip Pettit, J.J.C. Smart, Gregory Currie, David-Hillel Ruben, Leon J. Goldstein, Noretta Koertge. Ernest Gellner, Adolf Grunbaum and Gerard Radnitzky. Part II contains studies in the history and methods of the natural sciences by Paul Feyerabend, J. N. Hattiangadi, W. W. Bartley, Peter Munz, Fred D'Agostino, John Worrall, Alan Musgrave, Elie Zahar and Graham Oddie.

Overall the collection is disappointing because many of the writers seem to have rather little to say. Most of them offer generous compliments to Watkins and a picture emerges of a friendly, helpful and industrious colleague, but not one who initiated or stimulated original thoughts. The book is saved by some memorable papers which draw their inspiration from elsewhere, from the sociologist and historian Ibn Khaldun (Gellner), from Hayek (Radnitzky), from Popper (Bartley and Musgrave), from evolutionary epistemology (Munz ) and from the Goon Show (Worrall).

The piece from Worrall provides a sparkle of humour as a team of philosophers trot out the Popperian arguments against inductive support of justified beliefs. At the same time they try to stop a lunatic called 'Floater' from stepping off the upper level of the Eiffel Tower in the belief that he will float gently to the ground. Popper's ideas come out rather badly in the debate but Musgrave provides the rejoinder in his article where he concludes "Popper's solution [to the problem of induction] is so frequently misunderstood, by its defenders as well as its detractors, that I have been at pains... to say what the solution is" (p 322).

Gellner takes up the awkward question of defining human rights in cultures that lack the array of assumptions about individual liberties and critical thinking that underpin western democracy. Following some leads thrown out by the sociologist Khaldun he offers many insights into the problems posed by the militant Islamic nations. This interest of Gellner's has assumed a somewhat sinister importance in the wake of Sept 11 in the year 2001.

Radnitzky's article on science and the 'taming of the state' argues that the 'Rise of the West' depends on three pillars; the market economy, the (pre-democratic) achievement of limited government and autonomous science. Linked with this is an account of the evolution of primary theories to cope with daily life and the need for 'secondary' theories with a spiritual or metaphysical dimension to transcend the experiences of everyday living.

Bartley's paper "Unfathomed Knowledge in a Bottle" follows up some of Popper's thoughts on the information content of theories. He suggests that knowledge is a human product that we can never fully understand because in some sense we know far more than we realise due to the untapped content of our theories. This may be similar to the deconstructionists' views on the indeterminacy and multiplicity of meanings of texts, with the advantage that it is spelled out in English and not the convoluted prose that is apparently required for cult status in some circles.

Munz explains how one of the subversive insights of evolutionary epistemology concerns the fallibility and plasticity of our mental and sensory appparatus. This contrasts with the two main streams of epistemology which posit something approaching foundational status for, on the one hand, rational insights, on the other, sense impressions.

The papers by Gellner, Radnitzky, Bartley and Munz contain a great deal of 'untapped content' and so they could well be growing points for further work. In that way they justify the existence of this memorial volume, though not its unfortunately high price.

                                        Description:
Hayek posits that monetary policy alters the capital structures pursued. Job reallocation initiates, implements and operates these structures. A partial adjustment model is estimated using US manufacturing data. The results suggest Hayek's theory to be operative but lacking economic significance.

                                                      Book Description

Much has been written about communicating within organizations but relatively little on the critical skill of communicating upward. Green and Knippen, experts in employee motivation and performance, show how essential it is to the success of an organization, public or private, for employees to get their ideas up the ladder and into the hands of the top decision-makers. Their book outlines more than 40 specific upward communication needs and offers a structure that will ensure that the movement of ideas upward actually takes place. Unique in that it provides concrete advice for executives, managers, and employees alike, the book is especially important for human resource specialists, people engaged in training and developing the managers of tomorrow and contributing to the organization's success today. Green and Knippen are quick to identify the barriers to communication of any kind, and particularly the special barriers that inhibit the flow of ideas upward. They provide readers with concrete advice, not only on what to communicate upward but the essential skills of how to do it. They maintain that knowing both what to communicate and how to communicate are the most crucial talents that one can have, and yes, they can be taught. But not only do they help people in their careers, they also help people take control of their lives off the job as well. Those who want to improve these essential skills and in doing so get along better with people in higher level positions will find much wisdom here, in a readable, engaging presentation, and a thoughtful look at what they must do first, and do now.

This is an ok book but not one that I'd rush out to buy. My clients are more in the Government than in private sector and the info in here talks more to private sector issues but communicatoion is communication and I was hoping there would be new ideas/techniques, maybe some stattistics/research on how people best reveive/convey information. I didn't really get that from this book. There are better ones out there that are less expensive (check out Communicating Change)

Many professionals have a great store of technical knowledge and an impressive professional vocabulary, but lack the essential interpersonal commnunications skills necessary for effective management. This book solves the problem technically trained managers face by providing a clear, practical set of principles and methods that will enable them to work effectively and successfully with subordinates, peers, and superiors. Author Dale Jackson, himself a technically trained chemist, draws upon his own experience and the experiences of other professionals who have been thrust into management situations to offer practical, workable techniques that will be useful to anyone attempting the often difficult transition from the world of a technical profession to that of people within organizations.
