            Book Description

In 1838, the Regents of the University of Michigan contracted with Alexander Jackson Davis, who provided landmark designs in the Gothic Revival style. Although they approved Davis' designs, the financial situation forced the Regents to ultimately abandon them, and instead build in the classical style. The architect of these structures has been unknown, as has been the source for the plan for placing them on the campus.
Aspirations for Excellence explores the early physical development of the University of Michigan's campus from 1838 to 1880, the designs of architect Alexander Jackson Davis, and the mystery of the sources of the classical buildings. Showcasing the beautiful designs that Davis drew for Michigan, this book provides a view of his career and his place in the development of campus planning and design in America.
Many previously unknown documents and unique illustrations have been brought together for the first time in this important collection that tackles issues related to campus planning, history of higher learning institutions, architectural history of the nineteenth century, and the influence of the physical development of college campuses in the 1830s and 1840s on the campus of today. Aspirations for Excellence will be of interest to aficionados of the University of Michigan, as well as scholars in the fields of architecture and architectural history.
Julia M. Truettner is Building Historian and Administrative Assistant, University Architect and Planner's Office, University of Michigan.

5 out of 5 stars Aspirations for Excellence Worthy of Praise.......2005-07-20

Truly an outstanding publication worthy of praise from both fans of the University of Michigan and of architectual design and history. This book combines fascinating research with a comprehensive discussion of the designs of Alexander Jackson Davis and showcases exquisite illustrations including many color architectual renderings from the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Ms. Truettner's sentinel work is as extraordinary to view as it is to read. Highly recommended.

                A. J. Downing, the celebrated 19th century landscape architect, reserved his greatest admiration for Montgomery Place, in New York's pastoral Dutchess County. His personal and professional relationship with the estate and its owners, and his theories of landscape architecture, are recorded through his letters and his famous article, " A Visit to Montgomery Place." Never before published, 14 watercolor sketches by Alexander Jackson Davis, the noted 19th-century architect and Downing's long-time collaborator, provide stunning evidence of the beauty and splendor of Montgomery Place.

                    Book Description

A Romantic Architect in Antebellum North Carolina is not merely a compilation of images; rather, it is a parcel of North Carolina's history. It represents the combined efforts of several years' careful research and thoughtful writing on the part of its authors. It is also a tribute to North Carolina's leaders during the several decades prior to the Civil War who labored to take a sluggish and backward state and make it among the most progressive in the United States. Those leaders, whose names appear throughout this document, strove to create the finest system of public education in the nation, constructed the then-longest railroad in the world, and created institutions for the care of the blind, insane and deaf. They also commissioned one of the nation's preeminent architects, Alexander Jackson Davis, for the design of their public and private edifices.

                    4 out of 5 stars A great book.......2006-06-07

Let me start by saying it's a great book! It's a 144 page 8 1/2" x 11" book full of large color illustrations - 200 in total. The only B&W image is the author's photo on the jacket (hardcover). That's a huge plus. Too many times in the book store I've picked up books on impressionism to find more B&W plates than color. I don't see the point of showing impressionist paintings in B&W... even when discussing just composition.

The book addresses over 50 topics on painting impressionist style paintings with multiple discussions on colors, brushstrokes, figures, composition, and more. Each topic is illustrated with one or more paintings by Dawley and many include one or more close-ups and even photographs of the original scene to reference.

To me, a realist painter who wants to be a little more painterly or dabble in impressionism, this is an invaluable reference that illustrates and describes concepts that I can learn from and apply to my work. I believe it would be even more valuable to someone whose main goal is to paint like the impressionists.

FYI - This book is the paperback version of "Seeing and Painting the Colors of Nature" by Dawley - also available on Amazon.

The 1950s and '60s were the halcyon days of the American Dream. Life was easier, safer and altogether more innocent. Nowhere was this more apparent than the freeway, that symbol of the growth of American prosperity. American Retro is a wonderfully evocative collection of gift books celebrating the motels, diners, cars and Main Streets that were the landmarks of these great highways. Together with a selection of witty and nostalgic quotes, these charming books will be a perfect gift for those who remember.

2 out of 5 stars Missed Main Street, drove up a dead-end instead........2002-12-09

A disappointing half-hearted attempt at capturing the essence of Main Street USA. The book's intro suggests this is nostalgia for Fifties America, Norman Rockwell land, a railroad station, Woolworth's, gas stations, soda fountains, barber shop, movie theatre, Post office, volunteer fire department and more. Plenty of scope for visual material but what is presented (in rather flat color) looks like it came out of a stock photo catalogue, there are even three photos of ghost towns from the old west.

There are a few interesting photos though, pages 44-45 show the Woodstock, Vermont, Town Crier, actually a notice board with the latest goings-on written in chalk, page 26 shows some guys passing the time of day outside a store in Redwoods, California. There should have been a lot more of these sort of photos and some showing the insides of the stores on any Main Street. Throughout the book there are rather dull quotes that are given too much space. The photo and quote credits are given four pages at the back when they should have been on the relevant pages throughout the book.

I have a couple of other books that handle the theme so much better, 'Remembering Main Street' by Pat Ross, which covers ten towns across the Nation and their Main Streets and 'Home Towns' by photographer George Tice, wonderful black and white images of Fairmont, Indiana, Dixon, Illinois and Hannibal, Missouri.

                    Book Description

The series begins with the story of Seiya, the main hero, who is one of Athena's Knights. Seiya, along with the other Bronze Knights, must train hard to earn their "Cloths," and take on other challenges as well. Knights of the Zodiac (Saint Seiya) has been a hit in Japan (where it is known as simply Saint Seiya), as well as many European countries including Spain, France, and Italy.

4 out of 5 stars not the best translation, but still Saint Seiya.......2004-06-13

This is a great Manga!!! Anyone who likes saint seiya should definitely give it a look. There are some bad translations, and its up to you if you can stomach the many changes.
Saints have been changed to Knights (which isnt really a big deal because its the same in the other countries)
Saori's name has been changed to princess sienna(princess???)
Cygnus has been changed to swan
jabu has been changed to jab the unicorn
Mitsumasa Kiddo has been changed to lord Nobu
cosmo has been changed to universe (although they occasionally slip up and say cosmo)

At first the new names feel like knives piercing your eyes, but it wont bother you that much, the great story and artwork is intact. So I definitely reccomend this book, but if you cant stomach the translations I think you should either buy a different language version or the great saint seiya dvds by adv.

                    translation - C
The translation is good but the name changes are a definite negative, fortunately the comic only adopts the name changes from its cartoon network cousin...You wont find any saints, err knights saying dude here!
                    Artwork - B+
The artwork is crisp and I like the style Kurumada uses. Youll definitely see some eyecandy. I detracted some points for the crazy cloth desings.
                    Story - B
the plot moves a little slow but slowly start to pick up.

                    overall - B-
                    I reccomend

4 out of 5 stars story is beginning to move again.......2004-05-04

I consider the second book as a filler between 1 and 3. This is where the story gets picked up. One of the central character is introduced, and the real conflict begins.

                    3 out of 5 stars characters introduced...not much else........2004-04-21

The book 2 is used to introduce three more important characters to the story. There are lots of action, but not much else. It's not essential that you get this book to understand future books because there wasn't any new development in the story.

                    5 out of 5 stars Quit Whining.......2004-02-10

Look, it's great that you know how to read Japanese or read the Spanish version, but most of us don't or didn't. Masami Kurumada is one of the very best and most creative story teller there is. I don't think the essence of his story is getting lost. Some existential topics like what it means to be a being in the universe and relationship between cosmos and self is discussed, but never in a boring way (Marin crushes a rock to illustrate this point). It's a fantastic book, and it sets up a greater story line.
My Japanese friend used to tell me about this book, and I'm so glad to finally have something I can read. If you are intested in getting a great book that's fun and exciting; pick this up.

                    3 out of 5 stars Killing a Classic.......2004-01-27

Saint Seiya is a great Anime and Manga but there killing it when they brought it to the US why is it so poorly translated? they need to get some new people working for them. I wonder if Massami Kurumada knows how bad there tranlations are. Mexico did a better job of translation i'm glad i know spanish so i won't have to suffer the poor voice overs and translations.
