Book Description
The second volume of a guide comprehensive guide to American Architecture, covering developments between the years 1860 and 1976.
Customer Reviews:
American Architecture.......2000-09-30
I am in the process of reviewing textbooks for use in a general History of Architecture course. This book seems comprehensive, well-organized, and provides clear illustrations. For the price, it is a good value. Additionally, it will serve well as a textbook (alongside the other volume by the same title). I know of several other instructors who use these volumes and although their students respond that it isn't the best book - I recommend it for the price and the amount of material it covers. Vol. 1 - 1607-1860; Vol. 2 1860-1976. --- Specifically, I do not like: some of the chapter titles: (Vol. 2) specifically "Proud and Soaring Things". Also, there are no color images; although this is a small inconvenience (and again, the price makes up for this problem). Yet, as an instructor needing to make slides, it's helpful to have a color image with high resolution to make reproductions for use in class.

Death and the Photographic Image.......2005-03-01
Light in the Dark Room: Photography and Loss by Jay Prosser (University of Minnesota Press) (Hardcover) Photographs are not conduits for the return of memory, but memento mori: reminders of the fact of death itself. And in this, Jay Prosser tells us, we find the gift of photography.
Engaging the photographic reflections of figures as different as Roland Barthes and Claude Lévi-Strauss, Gordon Parks and Elizabeth Bishop, Light in the Dark Room offers a vision of photography as real¬ization of loss-and a revelation of how photographs can shed light on the dark rooms of our lives. The grief this book recalls is poignant yet universal: a son loses his mother; an anthropologist, his culture; a photographer, his youth; a poet, her lover. Among these losses and the remarkable photographs that accompany them, Prosser weaves his own meditations on photography, on the interdependence of loss and enlightenment, on the emergence of our technologized society-and the world we have lost in the process.
Excerpt: We treat photographs as if they had a kind of presence. Photography is the commonest way for us to record our own and our loved ones' lives. And we arrange photographs in our rooms of our beloved, often because they cannot be with us there-often (and eventually) because they are dead. Photography is the medium in which we unconsciously encounter the dead. Yet herein lies photography's hidden truth. Photographs are not signs of presence but evidence of absence. Or rather the presence of a photo-graph indicates its subject's absence. Photographs contain a realization of loss. This book on photography enters into that loss."

Book Description
It is no coincidence that the garment industry gained a foothold in Pennsylvania's hard-coal region as mines were closing or reducing operations. "Runaway" factories, especially ones from Manhattan, set up shop in mining towns where labor was plentiful and unions scarce. By the 1930s garment factories employed thousands of wives and daughters of unemployed or underemployed coal miners in the Wyoming Valley but organizing workers would prove difficult for the International Ladies' Garment Workers' Union (ILGWU).
Fighting for the Union Label tells the story of how workers in the Wyoming Valley, led by Min Lurye Matheson and her husband, Bill, banded together and built one of the largest and most activist movements of garment workers in the ILGWU's vast network. Workers' education, political activism, a health care center, and a widely recognized chorus were among the union's trademarks. Despite the union's influence, however, the apparel industry migrated to the American South and then overseas in the 1970s and 1980s. Tens of thousands of workers throughout the state and nation would loose their jobs, and sweatshops would become part of the economic landscape in countries like Guatemala.
The first major work on the garment industry and its workers in Pennsylvania, Fighting for the Union Label draws extensively upon the Wyoming Valley Oral History Project (co-directed by Ken and Robert Wolensky) which has collected the reminiscences of more than 325 workers, factory owners, public officials, and others. The story of the dynamic Min Matheson and the rise and fall of the garment industry provides key insights into the deindustrialization of northeastern Pennsylvania
Customer Reviews:
Great Story.......2003-01-05
My mother worked in the garment industry in PA her entire life and this book tells me the story of how that happened. My mom was a staunch supporter of the ILGWU and now I know why. I highly recommend this book to anyone who had family that worked in the early days of unionization. It's a wonderful depiction of some very courageous women and men.
