Wendell Garrett once again produced another great collection on fine furnishings and architecture. There is great range from simple colonial design to grand represented in this book. I highly recommend this to anyone who is interested in colonial furnishings and architecture, or who simply likes the finer things!

A great reference book showing many different pieces of porcelain and all the proof marks of the manufacturer. Highly recommended for collectors or researchers of Allach, Nymphenburg or other very rare porcelain.

Monetarism is dead! Central bankers are all Wicksellians now! They target low inflation rates, with no regard to monetary aggregates whatsoever, by acting upon short-term real rates of interest. This is the New Consensus in monetary economics, or simply the New Keynesian Synthesis. Yet, this synthesis still hinges on variants of the long-run vertical Phillips curve originally proposed by Milton Friedman, the father of old-line monetarism. Contributors to the volume question this New Consensus. While they agree that the money supply should be conceived as endogenous, they carefully examine the procedures pursued by central banks, the monetary policy transmission mechanisms suggested by central bankers themselves, and the assumptions imbedded in the New Consensus. They propose alternative analyses that clearly demonstrate the limits of modern central banking and point to the possible instability of monetary economies. Heterodox and orthodox monetary macroeconomists alike will find this illuminating book of great interest.

A view in to the past... understanding what has happened........2005-08-14
I rate this book specially for its contents, describing what happened during a difficult period of German History with an objective view.
The study of Daimler Benz history is a good case to see how things happened, what economic conditions were present, what management concepts were used at the time and a description of the development of production technology that made possible the German Industrial power to develop during the Third Reich.
It may also help understand the behavior of the managers in charge of the company, in relation to the human values involved.
This topic is difficult to handle with objectivity. I recommend reading Daniel Faber's book on Alfred Sloan of General Motors to have a feeling of how american top management behaved and thought during the 30's and the second world war(book title: Sloan Rules). It is important to understand how management in America thought their mission, their rights and what they thought was normal behavior to make a paralel to what their contemporaries in Germany were doing.
I think this book is must reading for anyone that is interested in the history of business.
Daimler-Benz conspired with the Nazis during the war........1998-10-28
The basic premise of this book is that Daimler-Benz, the maker of Mercedes-Benz automobiles, placed profit before principle and committed criminal acts during World War II. The evidence is displayed as if presented by a prosecutor in court. There is little room for doubt or deception. The book is not always easy to read and the story line is at times hard to follow. There are too many abbreviations that require frequent clarification. Maps should have been included that would have assisted the reader in following the location of the many Daimler-Benz plants. The "story" is important and represents an original contribution, however, the book could have been more "user friendly".

this is one of the best books on the market concerning this unexplored area.The photos are clear and detailed. The story is well written and includes where the surviving cars are today and when you can see them in person. The bibliography is also a wealth of furthur information. One thing- you have to get the dust jacket with this book, the photo is fantastic.

No longer just pocket money for American teens, wages paid by multinational fast-food chains are going to a new generation of order-takers, burger-flippers, and basket-fryers - newly arrived immigrants.
Hailing from China, the Caribbean, Latin America, and India, a colorful sea of faces has taken its place behind one of the most ubiquitous American business institutions - the fast-food counter. They have become a vital link between the growing service sector in our cities' ethnic enclaves and the multi-billion dollar global fast-food industry.
For four years, sociologist Jennifer Parker Talwar went behind the counter herself and listened to immigrant fast-food workers in New York City's ethnic communities. They talked about balancing their low-paying jobs and monotonous daily reality with keeping the faith that these very jobs could be the first step on the path to the American Dream. In this original and compelling work of ethnography, Talwar shows that contrary to those arguing that the fast-food industry only represents an increasing homogenization of the American workforce, fast-food chains in immigrant communities must and do adapt to their surroundings. Rather than focusing on how ethnic communities become relatively sealed off from the larger economy, Talwar explores the interplay between globalizing mainstream forces like fast-food chains and the immigrant communities of our largest and most diverse cities.

This is a picture of America that you don't get elsewhere! She worked inside fast food restaurants to research this book, and I think she has done a stellar job here. Any American could learn a lot from reading this fine, fine book.
An interesting study.......2002-10-29
Sociologist Jennifer Parker Talwar spent four years working in a Burger King as a part of her research on this book. She interviewed a wide range of immigrant fast-food workers in New York City's ethnic communities. The result is an interesting study in immigration, ethnicity, labor and community in New York City.
As a white American who has worked in fast food before, I was surprised to read about just how much is going on with fast food restaurants in a major metropolis, both in terms of the labor side and the business side. My experience was archtypal middle America - the kid working to make extra money. I think that this description still applies for the vast majority of the country, but the more I think about the faces behind the counter of many fast food restaurants in Washington, DC, Talwar is right - fast food is the entry for many immigrants into the mainstream American workforce. Accordingly, this book is a must-read for those who want to consider how immigrants are assimilated into modern America.
The main limitation is that it is a study of immigrant labor and fast food in New York City. The broad range of ethnic diversity and community experiences that were drawn upon for this book simply do not exist anywhere else in the United States. I cannot think of any other city that could readily provide the "United Nations" workforce of the Chinatwon McDonald's described in this book. Therefore, how applicable Talwar's work is to the country at large must be called into question. Also, do not be fooled by the cover into thinking that this book is anything like "Fast Food Nation." It is a specific (and appropriately narrow) sociological study, and lacks the range of that excellent book.

Clearly the result of exhaustive research, this book takes traditionally very dry material and presents a highly readable text that identifies fascinating perspectives on the American Dream.
