Good introductory text.......2002-07-29

This book is a good introduction to the theoretical aspects of multimedia server technology. The book helps in providing an idea about the various requirements for mutimedia servers and the schemes/algorithms used to satisfy these requirements. However this book is not for someone who wants to set up a video server using commercial software and is looking for tips on how to configure it. This book is suitable for someone who is interested in conducting research on multimedia servers or wants some background knowledge on the topic.

Altogether, a very good buy.......2000-07-01

"Multimedia servers" is actually an introduction to the subject of implementing rich contents applications over data-networks, focusing on the design of high-bandwidth servers. The treatment of the many disciplines (e.g. communications, server architectures, storage issues, stream scheduling) is not well balanced. A lot of the volume is devoted to storage, while hardware/system architecture is briefly discussed. However, since this book seems to be a pioneering work in this emerging field, I find it most useful for any newcomer to the subject. The book includes a wealth of references as well as many field and simulation statistics results, being crucial to any developer in the field. Altogether, a very good buy.

.......and a big stinky thumbs down goes to Pokemon Tales!! I hate this series. I saw this in a bookstore one day and it wasn't what I expected it to be. Instead of a cool Pokemon book it was a chubby baby book. It was SOOOOO boring. Like, who would think someone THAT young would like POKEMON????? Who would think someone that young would even KNOW about Pokemon???????!!!!!!!!

Teaches kids a good lesson.......2000-05-12

I think this book is very good for little kids. In the book, Squirtle is afraid to come out of it's shell. Squirtle's friends Poliwhirl and Charmander try to get Squirtle to come out, but Squirtle is just too afraid. When Squirtle finally does come out, he gets to see a beautiful sight. This book teaches kids that even though they might be afraid at times, taking chances is better than being a coward.

Our 3-year old loves this book, and 'reads' it to himself from memory (since he can't read yet) whenever he can.. I would recommend it to anyone who wants to make reading more 'fun' and enjoys seeing their child interact with pokemon, yet may not feel he or she is old enough for the more 'mature' aspects of this phenomena.

Wonderfully Wise!.......2000-02-01

This book is so wise! It teaches an important lesson: Better to be safe that sorry, but you much take chances once in awhile. It is a cute, adorable story. I definitly recommend this book. It is the best in the series, I think.

Cute Board Book for the 3 and under crowd.......1999-10-27

This is a cute board book that is appropriate for the toddler set. If your child is at all familiar with the characters of the Pokemon video series, he or she may be disappointed: "Come out Squirtle" does not follow the story line of the series at all, rather, it tells a very simple story involving Squirtle and some other Pokemon.Probably a perfect book for a little sibling of a Pokemon crazed kid!

This book was compelling to read and impossible to forget. The way that the author writes the story from the bird's perspective gives the reader an unforgettable vision into one of North America's greatest environmental tragedies.

A Very Touching And Unnerving Story.......2003-05-15

After reading Allan Eckert's books on the frontier, I was pleased to find he also wrote a book about the passenger pigeon, a subject that has always fascinated me as a history teacher and an environmentalist. I read The Silent Sky and was deeply moved. So moved in fact that I was almost ashamed to be human. The greed and outright murderous lust thousands of Americans had for such an easy prey as the passenger pigeon was shameful and hard to comprehend. Unfortunately, the passenger pigeons were so timid, easy to hunt and numerous that they were incredibly easy pickings for the pioneers of the 19th century who unbelievably decimated a species that at one time numbered in the tens of billions. Eckert is an awesome writer and really hits you in the gut with such a touching story that you feel fascination, anger, guilt (for being human) and sorrow at the same time. In what I have learned from this incredible book, it really is a silent sky out there today compared to just over a century ago. Anyone with an interest in American History and the environment just has to read this book. Eckert, as a writer and researcher is truly gifted.

What can i say about this book, it was beyond captivating it was the best story i have ever read. Anyone who cares about nature or wildlife or both need to read this book. The way Eckert puts the plight of the passenger pigeon into words is wonderfull. He makes you believe you are one of the now extinct birds flying among one billion soaring a thousand feet in the air looking for your next meal, feeling your strong wings glide through the air and most of all feel the pain of being alone. In an extremely short period of time man wiped the passenger pigeon off the face of the earth. It gave me a sick feeling in the pit of my stomach to realize that man is capable of destroying such a beautiful bird....hundreds of millions of them...untill they were gone forever. GET THIS BOOK EVEN IF YOU DONT LIKE STORIES ABOUT NATURE..IT WILL TOUCH YOUR SOUL
