Book Description
The Scottish urbanist and biologist Patrick Geddes (1854-1932) is perhaps best known for introducing the concept of "region" to architecture and planning. At the turn of the twentieth century, he was one of the strongest advocates of town planning and an active participant in debates about the future of the city. He was arguably the first planner to recognize the importance of historic city centers, and his renewal work in Edinburgh’s Old Town is visible and impressive to this day.
Geddes's famous analytical triad--place, work, and folk, corresponding to the geographical, historical, and spiritual aspects of the city--provides the basic structure of this examination of his urban theory. Volker Welter examines Geddes’s ideas in the light of nineteenth-century biology--in which Geddes received his academic training—-showing Geddes’s use of biological concepts to be far more sophisticated than popular images of the city as an organic entity. His urbanism was informed by his lifelong interest in the theory of evolution and in ecology, cutting-edge areas in the late nineteenth century. Balancing Geddes’s biological thought is his interest in the historical Greek concept of polis, usually translated as city-state but implying a view of the city as a cultural and spiritual phenomenon.
Although Geddes’s work was far-ranging, the city provided the unifying focus of nearly all of his theoretical and practical work. Throughout the book, Welter relates Geddes’s theory of the city to contemporary European debates about architecture and urbanism.

Fifty Dollars!.......2000-03-15
This book dosen't have much in the way of techniques and it certainly isn't worth fifty dollars! While there is some useful information, the book is obscenely overpriced.The book dosen't really show you how to accomplish any of the drawings that are in the book. There's also a lot of boring, pompous text. Buying this book was a very big disappointment.

Outstanding book.......2007-06-05
It's really hard to say too many things about this book. Even older editions of Color Drawing are great, but this newest one goes above and beyond the call of duty. In an age when a lot of books get re-released as new editions with few substantive changes, Color Drawing breaks the mold by updating the techniques with current technology (i.e. Photoshop). It's great to see that the author and publisher realize that pure hand-drawing and rendering is quickly becoming a thing of the past and that the practitioners of today and tomorrow need to have excellent computer skills too. This book is full of very useful tips for combining Photoshop with hand drawings to create great effects. So even if you have an earlier edition, do yourself a favor and buy the new one anyway because you will learn a lot.

This is an excellent resouce for the study of rendering. After detailing the elements of color and design, it describes, step-by-step, how to achieve many finishes both interior and exterior. It is both instructive and informative.
Outstanding Resource.......2007-01-03
This is the standard for rendering in architecture and interior design as far as I am concerned. It will most definitely become a required textbook for my classes in visual presentation in the years to come. Doyle takes you step-by-step into the process of rendering with marker, color pencil, and pastels. But he doesn't just spoon feed you the recipe for each material rendering, he presents the basis for a process that allows you to render virtually any material not found in the book.

My rendering skills have improved HUGELY scince recieving this book. It helps with marker, colored pencils, pastels, how to treat light, etc. My renderings look amazing and it is a great reference for when I'm not sure how to treat a surface/object. I would absolutely recommend this book.

Persistent unemployment is recognized as one of the main mechanisms of social and political exclusion. The Dynamics of Full Employment provides a new and fresh approach to the question of full employment in contemporary society. It offers an internationally comparative, interdisciplinary approach to the dynamics of full employment and views the labor market not only as an economic institution, but as a social one.
The authors argue that transitional markets - defined as legitimate, negotiated and politically supported sets of mobility options - are becoming essential ingredients of successful employment policies in modern societies. Social integration through participation in the labor market should not exclude productive activity in other spheres of life.
The authors attempt to enhance the understanding, through empirical evidence, of the dynamics of modern labor markets and the theoretical foundation of transitional labor markets. They also aim to determine which arrangements (via institutional, legal and social security frameworks) might best be able to prevent or relieve structural unemployment.
This innovative and original book will be of interest to both academics and policymakers in the fields of public policy and labor market, and employment policy in particular.
