Book Description

The influence of contemporary literary theory on art history is increasingly evident, but there is little or no agreement about the nature and consequence of this new intersection of the visual and the textual. Vision and Textuality brings together essays by many of the most influential scholars in the field—both young and more established writers from the United States, England, and France—to address the emergent terms and practices of contemporary art history.
With essays by Rosalind Krauss, Hal Foster, Norman Bryson, Victor Burgin, Martin Jay, Louis Marin, Thomas Crow, Griselda Pollock, and others, the volume is organized into sections devoted to the discipline of art history, the implications of semiotics, the new cultural history of art, and the impact of psychoanalysis. The works discussed in these essays range from Rembrandt’s Danae to Jorge Immendorf’s Café Deutschland, from Vauxhall Gardens to Max Ernst, and from the Imagines of Philostratus to William Godwin’s novel Caleb Williams. Each section is preceded by a short introduction that offers further contexts for considering the essays that follow, while the editors’ general introduction presents an overall exploration of the relation between vision and textuality in a variety of both institutional and theoretical contexts. Among other issues, it examines the relevance of aesthetics, the current concern with modernism and postmodernism, and the possible development of new disciplinary formations in the humanities.
This collection, offering a wide-ranging survey of the impact of critical theory on teh discipline and practice of art history, will be of interest to all students of the visual arts and aesthetics.

Almost Perfect.......but missed the mark.......2001-07-13

From the opening page to almost the middle of the book is absolutely wonderful! The photographs are exquisitely done in color, the descriptions are complete & there are usually no more than 4-6 photos per page. Suddenly, it stops and the reader is left with pages filled with very small, black & white photos and wondering "What the heck happened??" The smaller compacts should have been the ones in the larger pictures and they are screaming for color! As for the educational & reference content, this book is hard to beat and will make an excellent tool for reading about the mechanisms of vintage compacts. Plus, the variety of compacts is mind-boggling! Recommended purchase but don't expect 100% satisfaction with the photographs & layouts.

a complement to the Mueller books.......2001-06-21

Gerson knows her compacts--she is an absolute authority, and this book gives many fine examples of compacts from all periods of time as well as good information about collecting. The color photos are a joy to look at. However, I don't like the way the book is organized--it's difficult to find what your looking for because things aren't arranged in logical order. In addition, I think it's a shame to have black and white photos--the majority of compacts really can't be appreciated unless they are seen in color, hence my 4-star rating. Mueller's two books are arranged better, with color photos for every compact, and Gerson should have tried to emulate that while making the book her own. But this book complements Mueller's, and for a rabid compact collector, this book is a welcome addition to the other books out there.

A visual feast for compact collectors & useful information.......2001-04-19

This book is simply beautiful. It is full of every kind of example of vintage compacts made, the photography of the compacts is stunning and many are in color. Plus it includes useful information for compact collectors on the history of compacts, helpful hints in collecting , vintage advertisments of compacts and how to identify and determine exact date compacts were made through patten numbers which Gerson includes at the end of the book. I got my copy of this book from Gerson herself through the Compacts collector club which she is the president of, autographed for me by her and although this particular edition of her book is out of print I would highly recommend her new one vintage and vogue ladys compacts as well. For all those fellow compact collectors these books are a must.

Warm Sarcasm and Humor.......2006-03-06

I am rather a connoisseur of comic strips. This one shows awesome humor, such warm and gentle teasing, a truly spectacular series about a couple with a loving relationship full of accepting but pointed humor. I wish I had this kind of marriage! Five stars, yes indeed. The strips published AFTER this book became more bitter, probably because Hirsh was *trying* to be funny, and the couple lost the warm closeness. But this collection is perfect, very homey and welcoming humor. The couple truly loves each other, and their bickering/nattering is so infused with appreciation and self-awareness that it warms the heart. NOT smarmy.

A witty, wonderful strip for couples everywhere.......2005-08-03

A comic strip about couples? It's been done before - but rarely has the couple been so natural, so human, and so witty. Dana and Steven come alive by the end of the book; you feel like you know them, like you invite them over for drinks and gently poke fun of each other with them! It's a real shame this comic never made it big; the author retired it at the millennium in a touching strip - I would dearly love to own a second collection of Bliss, but the first is a rare gem that any newlywed couple, or anyone who likes to watch "Friends", would enjoy owning. Snatch it up if you see a copy for sale - they make great presents at weddings!

A wonderful, unfortunately short lived comic.......2000-04-27

Bliss has already come and gone, but hopefully the sequel to this book will also be forthcoming.

The strip was an absolute riot; Stephen has a sharp incisive wit. Almost every strip is phrased just so precisely, yet so familiar to those going through the wedded ups and downs of middle class.

A definite must buy if you like comic strips such as Adam, Stone Soup, or For Better or For Worse.
