Book Description
The Only Comprehensive Guide to Brick Specifically for Landscape Architects "Nothing remarkable about a brick, is there? A brick is a brick so far as most people are concerned. And it is not a very beautiful thing, is it? But what you can do with it!" -Frank Lloyd Wright Brick was one of the first manufactured building materials. Today, it continues to be one of the most popular building materials in the world, thanks to its unparalleled versatility, durability, warmth, and aesthetic richness. And nowhere are these attributes more evident than in the designed landscape. Brick in the Landscape gives you the information you need to exploit brick's full potential in your design work. The first and only complete guide to the properties, use, selection, and installation of brick written from the landscape architect's perspective, it is destined to become a staple in your practice. Brick in the Landscape provides full, detailed coverage of all relevant technical aspects of brick, including materials and properties, finishes and bonds, classifications and shapes. It also familiarizes you with virtually all known bricklaying and masonry methods and techniques, including numerous all-but-forgotten, yet still viable, techniques. At the same time, Brick in the Landscape is an enduring source of inspiration and ideas. Generously supplemented with more than 100 photographs illustrating various building systems as well as both common and innovative applications of brick in landscape design, it will awaken you to the nearly unlimited potential of brick to enhance your designs. Brick in the Landscape is an indispensable tool for landscape architects, landscape designers, and architects who provide site-planning services.Customer Reviews:

Brick in the Landscape discusses why to use brick in its introduction. It then proceeds to give a brief history of brick with a concise description of the manufacturing process. Brick sizes, types and shapes are described with accompanying photos. Applications of brick are well covered with pertinent information included to aid the designer. Finally, design considerations such as bond patterns, joint design and other special techniques are explained. Within each section a handy feature called "The Busy Designer's Quick Reference Guide" provides a summary of the preceding chapter.
Author, Rob Sovinski is a landscape architecture professor at Purdue University. No stranger to the masonry industry, every year he puts on the Boiler Brick Bowl. This past year he had over 50 students designing and constructing brick planters. This gets landscape architecture students learning early what brick can do.

Benjamin Silliman: A Life in the Young Republic
Chandos Michael Brown Manufacturer: Princeton Univ Pr ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 0691085331 |
Book Description
Poet, essayist, chemist, geologist, educator, entrepreneur, publisher--Benjamin Silliman (1779-1864) was one of the virtuosi of the Early Republic and a founder of the American scientific community. This absorbing biography is not only a study of the youth and early career of a complex and remarkable man but also a window on his times. In lively and often moving detail, Chandos Michael Brown opens the broad context of Silliman's life in his native Connecticut. From Silliman's father's disastrous captivity among the British during the Revolution to the intensities of New England religious revivals, from the international celebrity of the Weston Meteor to the economic hazards of introducing artificial mineral waters to the New York market, here is an engaging portrayal of the growth of an American scientist within his rich cultural setting. Brown tells how the young Silliman confronted the declining fortunes of his distinguished family and how he strove to invent a new career worthy of his ambition and social standing. He describes Silliman's education at Yale College and in Philadelphia, his European tour, and his subsequent activities as a professor of chemistry and mineralogy, founder of the Yale Medical School, and editor of the American Journal of Science. Throughout this cultural biography, Silliman appears as the concerned member of an often troubled family--a man who nonetheless managed to achieve that elusive quality, greatly admired by his contemporaries, that of the representative American.

Governance Impact on Private Investment: Evidence from the International Patterns of Infrastructure Bond Risk Pricing (World Bank Technical Paper)
Nina Bubnova Manufacturer: World Bank Publications ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback ASIN: 0821348183 |
Download Description
During the last decade, capital markets increasingly became the main funding source for infrastructure finance and provision worldwide, including investments in developing and transition countries where infrastructure penetration still falls considerably short of needs. Infrastructure bonds served as the most popular method of oil, gas, electricity, telecommunications, and transport project financing in these countries throughout 1990-99, thereby substituting government funding. Thriving markets require not only an appropriate designed economic system, but also a secure political foundation that limits the ability of the state to confiscate wealth. This requires a presence of political institutions that credibly commit the state to honor economic and political rights. Investments in infrastructure are particularly susceptible to the risks of government interference. These and other risks impinge on investor confidence. This paper uses international cross-sectional and time-series infrastructure bond risk premium and credit rating history data from the past decade to examine the factors that influence investor risk perceptions and that inflate the cost of borrowing for essential infrastructure. The information thus generated about key governance risks is then analyzed for its policy implications.

The End of Globalization: Why Global Strategy Is a Myth & How to Profit from the Realities of Regional Markets
Alan M. Rugman Manufacturer: AMACOM/American Management Association ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 0814406386 |
Book Description
Globalization has been both lauded as a glorious solution to economic disparities and criticized as the malign cause of financial upheavals in developing nations. But, according to the noted economist and scholar Alan Rugman, globalization was never more than a myth, and the controversies it has spurred are based on the fictions of a homogeneous marketplace.Instead, Rugman argues, international economic activity has been driven by just 500 multinational enterprises operating in the triad of North America, the European Union, and Japan. Neither globally monolithic nor politically powerful, these companies produce and distribute goods for highly competitive regional markets (for example, 90% of cars produced in Europe are sold in Europe).
Scholarly and researched-based, yet eminently readable, The End of Globalization explores this new concept of multinational enterprises as regionally based and locally operated. And the book helps managers and executives develop successful "regional/triad" strategies that are responsive to local consumers--complete with concise summaries of 20 strategies from major multinational companies.
Customer Reviews:
Globalization---Myths and Realities.......2002-10-03
An Excellent Read.......2001-12-30
Brilliant Injection of Realism into Fog of Controversy.......2001-03-26
Rugman provides examples of how globalization fails (Disney, Saatchi and Saatchi) as well as success stories (ACER) and an analysis of how 20 of the world's multi-national corporations actually operate - i.e., with a strong regional and local presence.
We covers the role of the WTO (demise imminent), protectionism (NAFTA and EU), health and evironmental restrictions, and positions the dot com dream of internet-driven wealth as being one of media hype. There is no single global culture he says, and the new mantra really should be "Think Regional. Act Local. Forget Global".
This book is a brilliant demolition act on the false promises of globalization and also a stinging riposte to the doom-mongering paranoia of the Starbuck's trashers of Seattle and the McLibel crybabies.
Well written, clear, forthright, and with relevant examples this book is a must for students of globalization and international economics everywhere

Global Politics of Regionalism
Mary Farrell , Bjorn Hettne , and Luk Langenhove Manufacturer: Pluto Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback Similar Items:
ASIN: 074532262X |
Book Description
This book explores the phenomenon of regionalism. In a seeming contradiction to globalization, there is a growing tendency for countries to enter into regional arrangements as a response to the pressures of operating in a global marketplace. But regionalism is also emerging as a phenomenon in its own right, serving distinct purposes and taking different forms in different areas. The contributors explore how these patterns impact on wider issues such as global governance, democracy and trade. The book reviews the major theoretical approaches to regional cooperation including perspectives from international relations, political economy, economics and sociology. It is divided into three main sections: theoretical approaches to regionalism; issues of regional cooperation (such as security, monetary issues, identity and integration); and an exploration of specific case studies including the Middle East, Africa, the Americas, China, Europe, Asia and the Pacific.
With an international range of contributors, including Bjorn Hettne, Louise Fawcett and Andrew Hurrell, this in-depth and multi-disciplinary guide will be of interest to students across the social sciences and to the wider policy community.

Europe, East Asia and APEC: A Shared Global Agenda (Global Economic Institutions)
Peter Drysdale , and David Vines Manufacturer: Cambridge University Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 052163315X |
Book Description
This book contrasts regional economic integration in the Asia Pacific Region and in Europe. In the Asia Pacific Region, regionalism is developing by means of "open regionalism," constructed through the APEC (Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation Process). This is different from the regionalism that has developed in Europe through the construction of a single European Market and Monetary Union within the European Union. In the light of this contrast, a number of important contemporary policy questions are considered by an international team of contributors. How should Europe and other parts of the world respond to the development of open regionalism in the Asia Pacific Region? Can these regions develop a shared global agenda directed toward sustaining genuinely multilateral solutions to international trade policy problems over the coming years?

Global Economic Prospects: Trade, Regionalism, and Development 2005 (Global Economic Prospects)
World Bank Manufacturer: World Bank Publications ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback ASIN: 0821357476 |
Book Description
The proliferation of regional trade agreements is fundamentally altering the world trade landscape. The number of agreements in force surpasses 200 and has risen eight-fold in two decades. Today as much as 40 percent of global trade takes place among countries that have some form of reciprocal regional trade agreement.Global Economic Prospects 2005: Trade, Regionalism, and Development addresses two questions:
** What are the characteristics of agreements that most promoteor hinderdevelopment for member countries?
** Does the proliferation of agreements pose risks to the multilateral trading system, and if so, how can these risks be managed?
The report argues that agreements leading to open regionalismthat is, deeper integration of trade as a result of low external tariffs, increased services competition, and efforts to reduce cross-border and customs delays costsare effective as part of a larger trade strategy to promote growth. Such regional agreements can complement a strategy that, on the one hand, includes autonomous liberalization to promote productivity gains and, on the other hand, leverages domestic reforms to enhance market access.
Although regional agreements can prove beneficial to member countries, they can have adverse effects on excluded countries. Lowering of border barriers around the world is crucial to minimizing these effects. The completion of the Doha Development Agenda by all countries in the World Trade Organization will reduce the risk of trade diversion associated with regional agreements and will decrease trade losses of countries excluded from agreements.

International Trade and Developing Countries: Bargaining Coalitions in the GATT & WTO (Routledge/Ripe Studies in Global Political Economy, 13)
Amrita Narlikar Manufacturer: Routledge ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 0415318599 |
Book Description
This book provides a much-needed study of the bargaining coalitions of developing countries in the GATT and WTO. It traces, explains and theorizes on the formation and achievements of coalitions from 1982 to the present day.
Bargaining together in groups is common practice in international negotiations and the limited bargaining power of developing countries makes coalitions an especially crucial instrument for their effective diplomacy. This book investigates the relevance and workability of coalitions as an instrument of bargaining power for the weak and analyses the coalition strategies of developing countries at inter-state level.
The book focuses principally on coalitions involving developing countries and international trade. Through the case studies of the Uruguay Round and an analytical overview of more recent coalitions, the book fills a gap in the literature of international political economy and international relations.

Market Integration, Regionalism and the Global Economy
Manufacturer: Cambridge University Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 0521641810 |
Book Description
This is a study of the nature and the policy implications of changes in the global economy in relationship to the process of regional integration, using the newest techniques of economic analysis. The principal message drawn from these analytical and policy insights is that in a world characterized by trade distortions and nonlinearities, regional integration may or may not foster global integration, and may or may not advance regional or global convergence. The key is good economic policy based on sound economic analysis.
