Excellent directory of hard-to-find plan catalogs, websites, products, references and materials. I found the illustrations of garages, horse barns and apartment barns to be lovely, and I liked that I could reach the architects/designers directly for more information on their designs. Many websites given here don't seem to appear on search engines, so this book will help you with your Internet search for plans. This is similar in format to Berg's "Barns and Backbuildings" and "Backroad Home" and, like those, will be a great help if you're dreaming to build.

THIS IS A VERY DISAPPOINTING COMPILATION. THE INFORMATION GIVEN IS EITHER AN ADVERTISMENT TO BUY OTHER DESIGNERS' IDEAS, OR IS ALREADY READILY AVAILABLE FOR FREE ON THE INTERNET. MOST OFFENSIVE ARE THE TERRIBLE RENDERINGS; FIRSTLY, BECAUSE THEY ARE IN LIGHT GREY, WHICH MAKES IT DIFFICULT TO DISCERN ANY DETAILS, AND SECONDLY, MANY OF THEM ARE NOT EVEN CORRECTLY DRAWN TO PERSPECTIVE! Makes the "first building" question easy to answer.......2000-05-01

First, the definition provided by Berg: "In certain parts of the country, the terms `carriage house' and `carriage barn' are synonymous with any building that combines a garage and an apartment." The value of this book thus becomes obvious; many of us are faced with the dilemma of which to build first, the house or storage building to shelter tools and materials. So here's the answer, build a carriage barn that serves both purposes. Later, one can build the dream house and use the previous apartment as guest quarters or writing/painting/sculpture/crafts studio. As with his other books, Berg stimulates and inspires with lots of drawings showing classic and contemporary solutions to questions of style. Drawings from previous centuries and current working architects give a panorama of choices. Whether restoring an old carriage house or building a new one, this book is a useful tool for finding ideas, plans, and salvaged or new products for authentic construction or reconstruction.

High above the rest.......2000-06-24

As a relatively small island, Mackinac is almost perfectly suited to Cameron's style. Reading this book is almost as good as a trip to Northern Michigan. Cameron has obtained some of the best color-reproduction craftspeople in the world to print his books, and it shows. These are not your ordinary snapshots. The entire Island is here. If you ever wanted to see something steadily and see it whole, this book is a good place to start.

A must-own for all Michiganians.......1999-10-23

Robert Cameron's "Above" series are all fine works, and offer unique glimpses at major cities from a unique perspective. All of his works are primarily photography travelogues, but each offers pithy captions from local experts.

"Above Mackinac" is among the best, and offers spectacular aerial photos of not just Mackinac, but all of Northwestern lower Michigan. The book also does a fantastic job of pairing Cameron's photos with historical shots, highlighting changes over the years. Sort of a then-and-now retrospective. Mind you, these are not 35,000-foot government-land-survey-type aeriel photos, but rather are lower angle photos taken from a helicopter at perhaps 2,000 feet, so details can easily be picked out.

The colors and landscapes of this glorious region come alive -- partly because many of the photos were taken at the peak of the fall colors. The sights of Mackinac, Sleeping Bear Dunes, Charlevoix and the five-mile long "Mighty Mac" bridge bring back great memories for me anyway.

Makes a great coffeetable book. My only complaint is that unlike most of his other works, this particular book is not available in hardcover. Enjoy!

A beautiful book of a beautiful place........1999-04-07

I was fortunate to live on Mackinac Island the summer that this book was published and have a copy from The Island Bookstore, signed by both Robert Cameron and Phil Porter. The book is gorgeous, and now that I am planning to return to the island after a five year absence, it is invaluable as I choose lodging and make plans. It effectively captures the beauty and majesty of a very special place and Cameron and Porter's affection for Mackinac Island is evident on every page. For those who hope to visit this magical place or who already hold it dear, Above Mackinac is a wonderful journey.

Is awesome to see ideas outside the mainstream. Most people today like monarchy. Kings are obsolete. Let people do as they please and the inefficiency will be squirted free like bad zits. Rmoving the rules that govern is privatization. Privatizing education alone would lead to much smarter people. Let all the rules that restrain people from creating good go away. Watch life improve. think different. Think freedom of action from the rules of the king.

Being a real rebel is thinking different. Thats what this author does. Get rid of rules of the goverment. Let private owners decide. These ways of releasing people lead to hugely improved results. Awesome read. Media will want to burn this book. It explodes all collectivist works.

Pro-Privatization.......2000-06-06

I will begin by stating that I have a major problem with the book. Savas skews his own statistics in order to push readers into supporting the privatization of our nation's public sector. His book focuses entirely on the private sector's greater efficiency over the public sector without addressing many other important issues. If you want a very one sided book that is pro-privatization, then buy this one. If, however, you would like a book that seeks to enlighten readers with facts and allows them to make their own decision on the matter, then find another book.

Partnerships between the public and private sectors to fulfill public functions are on the increase at every level of government. In the United States and Canada they currently operate in most policy areas, and in the U.S. trial programs are planned by the Internal Revenue Service, the Census Bureau, and the Social Security Administration.

Partnerships represent the second generation of efforts to bring competitive market discipline to bear on government operations. Unlike the first generation of privatizing efforts, partnering involves sharing both responsibility and financial risk. In the best situations, the strengths of each sector maximize overall performance. In these cases, partnering institutionalizes collaborative arrangements in which the differences between the sectors become blurred.

This is the first book to evaluate public-private partnerships in a broad range of policy areas. The chapters focus on education, health care and health policy, welfare, prisons, the criminal justice system, environmental policy, energy policy, technology research and development, and transportation. The contributors come from a number of fields, including political science, education, law, economics, and public health. They merge experiential and social-scientific findings to examine how partnerships perform, to identify the conditions in which they work best, and to determine when they might be expected to fail.
