Book Description
Beginning with McKim, Mead, Bigelow, and White's famous sketching trip of 1877, architects have recorded the historic architecture of northern New England and incorporated its imagery into their own designs. Colonial Revival Maine provides an insightful account of how an interest in the classical influences of colonial- and federal-era buildings engaged the imagination of a group of Boston-based architects and their draftsmen. together, these under-appreciated designers would create the charming streetscapes and bucolic retreats that today dot the Maine coast.Customer Reviews:

Martin Sorrell, Chief Executive Officer, WPP Group PLC "Effective strategy is something that is lived everyday by managers at the coal face through a continual process of analysis, learning, refinement and application. This book is a useful primer for time-pressed managers who want to know how to add value to their companies' strategies." Professor John Quelch, Dean, London Business School "Our business is founded on smart, independent thinking professionals helping clients solve complex problems. Any book that can give people better tools to understand these problems is useful. Unlike many I read, this is a useful book." Terence M. Graunke, Chairman, Lighthouse Holdings IncCustomer Reviews:

Keeping it simple.......2000-02-14
Value Drivers suited me very well because it seeme to highlight the pertinent issues quickly and accurately without going into unnecessary detail. The models introduced have been relevant to a number of the modules on my course including marketing and finance as well as strategy. Since I am interested in marketing then the case study examples given have also been relevant.
In a nutshell a fine example of brevity, clarity and precision. One small niggle. More illustrations, please. Pictures paint etc. My course load would reduce if more books were written in this way!
Very helpful for first year business estudent.......2000-01-22
The novel "toolkit" provided was tremendously useful, depicting a practical and conciso means to categorize companies. The examples given were creative and thought provoking, and differentes from anything I have read in standard management books that are always very boring.
Graphics were also valuable, very simplified and to the point, instead of being so complicated.
I believe that I will go back to this sophisticated book, in the future. It helped to clarify what so many others books on this subject tend to present in a pompous and tedious complicated fashion.
I want to thank John Wiley & Sons for publishing this book. It meets expectation of high quality associated with this publisher. Excelente!
a wonderfully useful new book.......2000-01-21
One walks away from this book with the key fundamentals rather than the typical, irrelevant mumbo jumbo found in other books on the subject. This is an informative, practical introduction, the only such example I have found among available books on the subject.
Further, the author's writing style is clear and to the point rather than going on and on and on filling up pages with irrelevance of typical management texts. This is a great relief, and a welcome, dearly needed addtion to the field.
I suggest "Value Drivers" as mandatory reading for anyone who desires to quickly understand how easily a business can be made to work better.

Swept Under the Rug: A Hidden History of Navajo Weaving (University of Arizona Southwest Center Book)
Kathy M'Closkey Manufacturer: University of New Mexico Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover Similar Items:
ASIN: 0826328318 |
Book Description
Collected and highly valued all over the world, Navajo weaving has been the subject of many aesthetic and historic studies. Grounded in archival research and cultural and economic approaches, this new book situates Navajo weavers within the economic history of the Southwest and debunks the romantic stereotypes of weavers and traders that have dominated the literature.Beginning with an analysis of trader archives revealing that nearly all Navajo textiles were wholesaled by weight until the 1960s, M'Closkey scrutinizes the complex interactions among artists, dealers, collectors, and museum curators that have facilitated the explosion in value of those old weavings. She also examines the production of Mexican copies of Navajo-style rugs, which in recent years has combined with the market for pre-1950 textiles to diminish the demand for contemporary Navajo weavings. Navajo patterns, she points out, remain unprotected by copyright because traditional designs have been in the public domain for decades.
Much of the exploitation M'Closkey delineates has been justified by the ethnographic classification of functional textiles as nonsacred crafts. But the author's conversations with Navajo weavers suggest that their motivations for weaving go far beyond economics. Weavers' feelings for hózhó, the Navajo concept of harmonious beauty, encompass far more than any western concept of aesthetics. M'Closkey shows that the weavers' views of their work are marginalized when the work is treated as a collectible craft and culture is split from commodity.
No one who studies, collects, sells, or enjoys Navajo textiles (either genuine or knock-offs) can ignore this book. Sure to be controversial, it will be important reading for anyone concerned with the merchandising of Indian art.
Debunks the romanticist stereotyping of Navajo weavers and Reservation traders and situates weavers within the economic history of the southwest.

SETTING THE RECORD STRAIGHT--HISTORY MADE CLEAR.......2003-11-15
The author also addresses the problem of knockoffs of Dine' creativity and design seen today in the increasing number of overseas copies (from Mexico, India, Europe, and elsewhere) of Navajo weaving designs being marketed in the U.S. and sold worldwide.
Richly documented from the records of traders, trading posts, government, and other original sources--especially the testimony of the Dine' (Navajo) weavers themselves--the author gives voice to a history too-long hidden from the general public and now made clear and plain. "Swept Under the Rug" reveals how the weavings were severed from their makers' stories and how, because of this, the prevailing and standard "history" of Navajo weaving does not reflect Dine' values, but rather those of an externally controlled access to the public and marketplace. Fair-trade grassroots indigenous initiatives and cooperatives such as Black Mesa Weavers for Life and Land, Sheep Is Life, the Dine' College Navajo Textile Project, and others, are starting to bring about change and empower the Dine', through the work of their own hands, to reach the market directly, reclaiming the present and a future for the wool and weavings at the core of their culture and economy.
This book is a must-read complement to the few books in print about Navajo weaving that give voice to the Dine' themselves, such as in "Weaving A World: Textiles and the Navajo Way of Seeing," by Roseann S. Willink and Paul G. Zolbrod, and in parts of "Woven by the Grandmothers: Nineteenth-Century Textiles from the National Museum of the American Indian," ed. by Eulalie H. Bonar.

Working Capital: Life and Labour in Contemporary London
Nick Buck Manufacturer: Routledge ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback ASIN: 0415279321 |
Book Description
The turn-of-the-century has seen a fundamental change in attitudes to major cities, heralding the arrival of a new urban area. For decades the cities of the developed world were seen as problem beset relics from Times of availability and slow communications. But now, their potential to sustain creativity, culture and global innovation is perceived as crucial to success in a much more competitive global economy.
This book provides a rigorous but accessible analysis of these key issues taking London as its test case. London is the most internationalized and deregulated of all major cities, but also exhibits both a sharp economic turnaround and increasingly concentrated deprivation. The book provides the first substantial analysis of ley economic, social and structural issues that the new London administration faces. In a wider context, its critical assessment of the basis of the new urbanism and of the global City thesis will raise questions both about the adequacy of Urban thinking and about the capacity of new institutions alone to resolve the fundamental problems faced by cities.

Excellent study of Britain's capital city.......2004-06-12
London was Britain's largest single manufacturing centre, but since 1962 it has lost 1.6 million manufacturing jobs. Its unemployment has worsened recently.
The authors attack Blair's approach to local government: "Within each local authority the proliferation of government ordained partnerships and specially focused programmes (by service, group and/or locality) is making a coordinated approach and `joined up' governance harder than ever. ... our work has tended both to cast doubts on the efficacy of local programmes, and to underline the importance of a number of mainstream policy areas. ... Labour's pursuit of `joined-up' action seems quite perversely to have brought ever more complex arrays of `initiatives' which are short-term, unsustainable, uncoordinated and even contradictory. ... area-based approaches ... have been the staple of urban policy for the past 35 years, but rarely matched their promises with sustainable achievements. ... We are sceptical, however, about what has been achieved through the proliferation of health, education and other action zones."
Southwark, for example, has contracted out education and housing benefit administration, reducing its ability to coordinate policies. The council relies on private investment for regeneration, but most residents have not gained from the spectacular new South Bank. This kind of `regeneration' is just like the old discredited `trickle-down'.
The authors propose national programmes for "improving the supply of low- and moderate-income housing - and conditions in the existing stock of social housing - in ways that prevent this stock from being subsequently `captured' by other groups; improving public transport provision while restricting the costs of such travel, so as to enhance particularly the mobility of disadvantaged groups; and raising performance in those state schools at the bottom of current league tables ..."
