True to the original novel.......2007-05-15

I greatly enjoyed this manga, one of my firsts. It satyed very true to the original novel as well as following the film yet maintained a fresshness and creativity that was very interesting. The illustrations are great and very creative especially the wicked with and her castle which was very cool and conceptual. Well worth the very low price.

Oz comes to comics (or Manga).......2006-06-27

This is a pretty good book. I have never read the original novel. But i have seen the movie and Oz the Manga is somewhat different form its movie counterpart. The Characters of the Scarecrow, Tin Man & The Cowardly Loin are given bigger backstories. The Winged Monkeys are far more Scarry & The Wicked Witch of the West seem a little more wicked.

David Hutchison art is very good, especially when it comes to landscapes and tho the writing is not Alan Moore or Frank Miller level writing. It dose hold its own. Overall this is a Interesting Verison of the Wizard of Oz. Im not huge fan of mangas. But i did find this to be a fun read.

This is one of the best finance/accounting books I have read. For practicing generalists, this book is right on target -- not too detailed, but detailed enough. What's more, it's excellently written! My only criticism is that the title is somewhat misleading -- alot of topics other than "cost management" are covered by the author. Highly recommended!

Easy to read with great examples.......2001-08-09

I really enjoyed reading this book. By far, it is one of the best I've read in the field of cost accounting. Lianabel does a great job explaining the concepts and bringing them to life with examples. By the way, if you're interested in ABC/ABM, Tom Pryor's book called "Using ABM for Continuous Improvement" is also a great book with lots of examples.

Lianabel Oliver's book is an excellent simple book for managers and yes the general public! This book has helped understand the budgets the Administrator prepares in our office very year in terms of the importance of allocating effort and money to the continuously changing needs and demands of our work. It has also helped in formulating the right questions when I read the audit reports, budget projections, and income balance statements as a member of several board of directors.

Practical questions are introduced in each chapter and the analyses tools to deal with them are provided in both a simple and a more complex manner. The complex concepts are extremely well explained. Someone like myself, with no formal financial background could understand the concepts and reason through the chapters. One of the most amazing aspects of the book is that it draws on the very vast experience of the author with concrete examples that illustrate the points she is making and shows the various paths that one might take --the good and the bad. Showing the bad choices one can make and how to solve the problems this creates is seldom found in professional literature.

This book should be required reading for business people in general but most importantly for those businesses that deal directly with costumers. For example, chapter 8 will show both how to effectively measure the financial performance of these people-related businesses and how to improve the quality of service (cost management).

An Excellent Toolbox for Managerial Accounting.......2000-09-27

"The Cost Management Toolbox" is an excellent reference book, being a very useful and practical tool for accounting and non-accounting professionals. I use it very often for day to day managerial accounting situations in which the concepts presented by an experienced professional as Lianabel Oliver are very helpful. It is very easy to understand, and its examples are clear and concise.

I find this book terrific, as my current work involve costing and I don't have any accounting background. It tells me the very logical way to know the how the cost really count-on. I do recommend it to any person who want to know costing more deeply.

This is one of the most interesting and fascinating books on drugs I have ever read. Amazingly thorough and enthralling. It has so many tidbits of information and gossip.

Entertaining and Informative.......2000-07-19

As a pharmacologist, I found this book very interesting and much more informative than I expected it to be. I expected the book to be a simple review of drugs in pop culture, having read a little bit about the 'zine Pills-A-Go-Go that this book is based on. Mr. Hogshire presents some very thorough information about the processes of drug manufacture, marketing, and information control used by pharmaceutical companies. He also gives us a good history of pharmacies and the role of physicians in perpetuating this nation's obsession with prescription drugs. The book is written in a magazine style with lots of graphics, quotes, and lists. I love the use of old drug advertisements to show the history of pharmacetucial marketing toward doctors. I recommend this book to anyone interested in a career in pharmacy, pharmacology, or medicine, as well as anyone simply interested in "pill culture".

I only have two minor problems with this book. First, there are a ton of spelling and grammatical errors, which don't necessarily detract from the book's content, but do make the book a harder read. Second, the book is often very subjective and tends to follow Mr. Hogshire's very strong opinions on the pharmaceutical and medical industries. While this is to be expected based on the nature of the 'zine, it could have been written with a little less bias. In his defense however, he does a good job of telling all sides of the story on many subjects. Overall, this is a wonderful book.

Informative Beyond My Expectations!.......2000-03-13

All I can say is, wow! This book is chock full of absolutely fantastic pharmaceutical information- more than I had even hoped for! Mr. Hogshire is right on the mark on his views of grumpy pharmacists- that was a classic chapter! I admire his bravery in writing this work- no doubt many narrow minded people will dislike this book intensely for obvious reasons, but never mind about them! I stayed up until 2 a.m. just happily reading every little interesting factoid. A MUST for all of us PDR freaks! Highly recommended!

"High" praise.......2000-01-13

Jim Hogshire's "Pills-A-Go-Go" is an exceptionally entertaining and informative work that is great to read in a couple of sittings or in bits, a page or two a day.

This book is a good reference point to distingish the huge difference between a drug USER and a drug ABUSER.

There are MANY issues covered here that I have rarely (if ever) seen addressed elsewhere. One example is the fact that most pills are effective to treat things that they have not been officially approved to treat but if a doctor prescribes a drug for a non-government-approved reason he risks losing his licence. Also, much inside information on the relationship between doctors and the pharmaceuticle companies. And, the fact that government agencies have more input - as to what type of and how much of a drug you need when you are sick - than your doctor does! (How certain agencies of our government think it is more important to stop someone from "having fun" with a drug than to allow someone with, for example, a severed spine to have proper relief from their pain).

Highlight chapters include "The Pill as Virgin/Whore", "Rude Pharmasists", "Rape Drugs" (in which Hogshire points out that the date rape drug of choice is nor Rohypnol... it's ALCOHOL!), "Before Viagra, Better Sex Through Pills", "Pill Road Tests" (including a roll-on-the-floor hilarious account of an extreme Robitussin "experience"), and much more.

Well written & compiled, wonderful design & layout and great artwork.

WARNING: If you lend books, you may want to buy more than one copy... this is the type of book people borrow, then "forget" to return!

irreverent, informative, amazing.......1999-12-06

This is a beautifully done book. I was surprised by the content and delighted by the artwork. Every page is an unexpected joy. Hogshire probes our pill-taking conscience and examines the cultural significance of pills. He is playful, provocative and informative. Don't make the mistake of dismissing this important work as merely another how-to for druggies. This book transcends popculture and should be required reading for pharmacists, healthcare providers, even cops. It is a seminal work. I love this book.

Lack of Perspective.......2005-05-10

As interesting as this book was, Rubin failed to distance herself and her own biases from the writing. If one reads between the lines, what we get here is an author who has alterior motives. I'd like to know what her positions are on Socialism, Marxism, and Communism. She tries to be cryptic but the careful reader will discover what Rubin's really up to.
Finally, this book is dated. It has lost most of its validity, and unless one wants this book soley to understand the time it was done, it has very little place in current working-class family evaluation.

Anecdotal and entertaining, but limited........2003-10-10

This book would probably be a lot of use to a writer or screenwriter who was researching the working-class family in the early 70s. The stories are interesting and the writing is fluid and compelling. It gives a good slice of life from several perspectives.

It *might* be of interest to a historian as anecdotal material, but it's good to note that this is a small sample of interviews carried out by a writer who obviously had her own agenda with the subject matter.

I bought it second-hand and don't regret the time to read it.

Though not perfect, Rubin's work sheds light on many of the inter-personal and inter-gender plaues on America's working class families. Most importantly, Rubin writes with a believable sensitivity that heightens the text's effictiveness.

Entertaining. But rigorous sociology, it is not........1998-06-15

Lilian Rubin writes with an empathy that could only come from being the product of a working-class family herself. Unfortunately, the baggage which Rubin's brings along on her study tends to butt in inappropriately. In the chapter on the subject's childhood, for example, Rubin concludes that all of the subjects must have been unhappy during their early years because she could recall her "own impoverished background." It did not matter to Rubin that her subjects "implored, even commanded [her], to believe they had happy home lives as children."

It should also be noted that this study was conducted in 1972. While there is a fairly significant new introduction which Rubin wrote in 1992, the text of the book is unchanged. Certainly much has changed in the past twenty years. Both in terms of the jobs of the working-class, the sex lives of working-class couples, the reasons they marry, and even the definition of working-class itself.

In short, an interesting read by a talented writer. But rigorous sociology it is not.
