Ask the average New Yorker who designed Central Park, and those who know their history will probably say Frederick Law Olmstead--and they would be partially correct. But ask for the other half of the designing duo and watch for the blank stares. Notoriously introverted, Calvert Vaux left a legacy that, along with Central Park, includes Prospect Park in Brooklyn, original portions of both the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the American Museum of Natural History, as well as many other New York landmarks, yet most people outside of the architectural field have never heard of him. In Country, Park, & City: The Architecture and Life of Calvert Vaux, Francis R. Kowsky succeeds in rescuing Vaux from obscurity. In setting the record straight, Kowsky describes how Vaux originally approached Olmstead to join him in entering the design competition for Central Park in 1857, and after they won, the more charismatic Olmstead was recognized as the force behind the plan, while Vaux kept to the shadows. Kowsky also reveals Vaux as the originator of apartment-style urban dwellings, a concept that he applied to both upscale and low-rent complexes in New York, and which are now standard metropolitan domiciles. This richly detailed and often esoteric biography is a celebration of an artist who deserves recognition. Kowsky has colorfully put a face to the façade.

    Book Description

After beginning his career as an architect in London, Calvert Vaux (1824-1895) came to the Hudson River valley in 1850 at the invitation of Andrew Jackson Downing, the reform-minded writer on houses and gardens. As Downing's partner, and after Downing's death in 1852, Vaux designed country and suburban dwellings that were remarkable for their well-conceived plans and their sensitive rapport with nature. By 1857, the year he published his book Villas and Cottages, Vaux had moved to New York City. There he asked Frederick Law Olmsted to join him in preparing a design for Central Park. He spent the next 38 years defending and refining their vision of Central Park as a work of art. After the Civil War, he and Olmsted led the nascent American park movement with their designs for parks and parkways in Brooklyn, Buffalo, and many other American cities. Apart from undertakings with Olmsted, Vaux cultivated a distinguished architectural practice. Among his clients were the artist Frederic Church, whose dream house, Olana, he helped create; and the reform politician Samuel Tilden, whose residence on New York's Gramercy Park remains one of the country's outstanding Victorian buildings. A pioneering advocate for apartment houses in American cities, Vaux designed buildings that mirrored the advance of urbanization in America, including early model housing for the poor. He planned the original portions of the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the American Museum of Natural History and conceived a stunning proposal for a vast iron and glass building to house the Centennial Exhibition in Philadelphia. Especially notable are the many bridges and other charming structures that he designed for Central Park. Vaux considered the Park's Terrace, decorated by J. W. Mould, as his greatest achievement. An active participant in the cultural and intellectual life of New York, Vaux was an idealist who regarded himself as an artist and a professional. And while much has been written on Olmsted, comparatively little has been published about Vaux. The first in-depth account of Vaux's career, Country, Park, and City should be of great interest to historians of art, architecture, and urbanism, as well as preservationists and other readers interested in New York City's past and America's first parks.

          Book Description

Throughout his career, Turner has relentlessly pushed the medium of photography to achieve an extraordinary vision with an uncompromising thirst for bold color and composition. Yet Turner feels that "what really kept my name out there were these record covers." This book showcases 100 covers and their art in close to original size; many of the covers are rare and out-of-print, now collector's items, and connect to a who's who of musical legends—from Count Basie, John Coltrane, and Stan Getz, to Quincy Jones, Freddie Hubbard, and Steely Dan. Turner's covers set new standards for this medium and transformed albums into art objects, sought after both for the music they contain and the cover art they display.

          5 out of 5 stars wonderful book.......2007-02-18

I'm a professional jazz pianist, and a former pro photographer, and this book is just terrific. If you are a jazz fan, you already own some of these covers, and if you're interested in photography, you've probably been influenced by Turner's incredible color sense. This big collection, with his notes on the pictures and beautiful printing, is just a "must buy." I'm going to a dinner next week with a bunch of musicians, and I'm taking this book along to share. It will probably be more popular than the food.....

It's fascinating to me how the energy and freedom of jazz is reflected in Turner's approach to photography. Intensity, unusual color, surprising juxtapositions.....an inspiring blend. And he photographed the top players, the masters of jazz (with some pop in the mix, too).

          5 out of 5 stars Thanks Pete!.......2006-11-17

This is great: all of the best Pete Turner jazz record covers in one place. Many of these covers I saw for the first time as new releases in record stores by some of the best jazz musicians around; Milt Jackson, Paul Desmond, Freddy Hubbard, Wes Montgomery and so many others. To have a compendium of them in one beautifully designed and superbly printed book is an event worth celebrating.

The covers, by the confirmed master of color photography, Pete Turner, were always certain to grab my eye - and not let go. I don't know what I enjoyed more: looking at the covers or listening to the records. Fortunately it wasn't a mutually exclusive choice.

It is these photographs that inspired me to choose a career as a photographer, the best career in existence. I have Pete Turner to thank for that.

5 out of 5 stars Jazz never looked so beautiful..........2006-10-01

For some, the visual appeal of an album cover exceeds - even outlasts - the allure of the music within. At least as far back as the advent of the 12-inch long-playing record in the mid 1950s, record companies have attempted to draw us to music by relying on the fact that, indeed, we will judge an album by its cover. By the 1960s album covers were increasingly an art form itself.

If the art form wasn't created by Pete Turner - a distinction which may belong to Josef Albers, whose work graces a scant few Enoch Light albums - it was certainly enhanced by it. Pete Turner's photography has graced some of the best and most important jazz album covers made over the last half-century.

His work stands apart from the music as great art itself. It's not uncommon to hear albums described solely by Turner's iconic photography: "The Giraffe" album (Antonio Carlos Jobim's "Wave"), "The Icicles" album (Paul Desmond's "Summertime"), "The Cannonball" album (Hubert Laws's "Afro-Classic") or "The Cheetah" album (Hubert Law's "The Right Of Spring"). Each is striking. Each is important to the visual history of recorded sound.

"The Color Of Jazz" collects many of these album covers and shows why a Pete Turner album always stood out in any record store and, more importantly, as part of any record collection. The colors just jump off the page - a tribute to Will Hopkins and Mary K. Baumann's outstanding design.

There's a visual poetry in these images, expertly framed as they were on the original albums by Sam Antupit and Bob Ciano. It's a music you can see and, like jazz, there's a creativity, originality and improvisation that you can feel.

It's not merely a book of photography and it's much more than an album cover book. It's a celebration of the way art affects all the senses. Pete Turner knows how to use a camera to tap the soul. Just like jazz. "The Color Of Jazz" is a beautiful book that makes music from the page.

5 out of 5 stars Gorgeous! The work of a genius!.......2006-09-29

I bought the magnificent "The Color of Jazz" when it was still on pre-order at Amazon. Three weeks after, I didn't have time yet to absorb all the beauty of this gorgeous book. It's one of the most beautiful books I've ever seen. His shots are able to transport me to "outer space". I can keep contemplating the same photo for hours, while I "listen" to the respective LP in my head. Pete Turner is the most creative photographer who ever worked in the music (not only jazz) scene. Specially during the CTI heyday, his photos were an integral part of that crossover aesthetic. It's great to watch all those transcencental pictures together in the same book! Not to mention the great idea to include his early covers for the long-forgotten albums by The Creed Taylor Orchestra in the late 1950s, as well as his most recent work in the 2000s for such newcomers as Jorge Pescara. Pete is not only a great artist. He is a genius. Period.

5 out of 5 stars Jazzy Sassy Color.......2006-09-25

Kudos for one of the finest books on color photography and album covers I have ever seen. The colors not only jump off the page, they are also mesmerizing and hold you captive. The reproductions of the photographs, I would guess, are as close to the originals as modern printing technology will permit. Throughout the book you will experience color as you never have before. Turner is a master of color and I think he is as joyfully possessed with it as was Paul Klee when he wrote "Colour possesses me. I don't have to pursue it...Colour and I are one". Turner's photographs are not only rich in color but also, rich in feeling.
If you are a synesthete (a person who can see color and hear music) I would venture that you might actually hear jazz music emanating from the book as you turn the pages and look at the vibrant, highly saturated colors.
The design of the book is without fault and the large 12 x 12 inch size provides a generous amount of space for both the album cover photographs and the commentary.

          5 out of 5 stars African Journey, A Hero's Journey.......2001-04-19

Anyone familiar with Pete Turner's work over the past years, knows that he is a master magician of color. His new book, Pete Turner African Journey, a collection of color photographs taken over his many years of return travel throughout Africa is magnificent to behold for both its color and content. Pete has a creative passion for color. His connection to color reminds me of a statement by the artist Paul Klee, "Colour possesses me...color and I are one." So it is with Pete who creates his colorful art using a camera and a searching eye. The way he photographs the people, places and culture of Africa is best said in one of the quotes I have by Gordon Parks. " Recording images of serenity and beauty was a matter of devout observance." I can think of no better way to describe the beauty, sensitivity and reverence of Pete Turner's photographs. His photographs are artfully displayed in a beautifully designed book by the prominent designer and friend, Massimo Vignelli. An introduction by another prominent friend, Gordon Parks, pays tribute to Turner for "...an unforgettable gift that urges me to breathe my own roots." African Journey, is a hero's journey, and an invitation to witness the rich and radiant colors and culture of Africa, the second largest continent on our mother earth.

5 out of 5 stars A stunningly visual journal of people, landscapes, wildlife.......2001-03-16

Showcasing 148 full-color photographs, and with an informative introduction by photography, fillmmaker, composer and author Gordon Parks, Pete Turner African Journey captures the exotic glamor of a seven-month journey from Capetown, South Africa to Cairo, Egypt while Pete Turner was on assignment for National Geographic. This is a stunningly visual journal of people, landscapes, wildlife, and visual beauty where the images captured by Turner's camera could easily stand as individual works of high art and hang on any gallery wall. Pete Turner African Journey is a superbly produced and highly recommended addition to any personal, academic, professional, or community library photography collection.

          5 out of 5 stars A Compelling Journey.......2001-02-05

This book is a wonderful trip that takes us though the landscapes of Africa, visiting the people and the incredible wildlife, seen through the lens of one of the world's greatest photographers. Turner is a master of color and light, and he fell in love early in his career with the richness of the African continent. To spend time with this book is to be his travelling-companion, visiting ancient temples, witnessing animals in their world, crossing the Sahara and spending time in villages, getting to know the proud people who live there. One beautiful image is of a dog sleeping in an Ndebele village, its white paw matching the painted architecture. In images like this, Turner shows us again and again scenes that only his eye and lens could capture.

5 out of 5 stars Under the African Sun.......2001-02-01

Pete Turner has often been called a photographer's photographer--but that doesn't mean his work lacks wide appeal. His latest book, Pete Turner African Journey, a 206-page collection of images from seven trips he made to Africa, amply demonstrates his ability to please everyone's eye. Here, with his friendly introduction serving as a guide, he takes you on a tour of his pictures and tells you some of the many stories behind them.

Few photographers have displayed as graphic an approach to the art as Turner or such a strong color sense. His shots of the people, the land and the animals glow with the intensity of stained glass. Graphis, the publisher, is to be congratulated for bringing Turner's brilliance to us--and Turner for giving us this chance to bask with him the warmth of the African sun.

                              Book Description

The varying organizational arrangements between firms 'networks' are a growing field of study for economics and sociologists. Whether described as strategic alliances, trading networks, joint ventures, or regarded as a product of industry structure or local conditions, they are seen as a form of economic co-ordination distinct from archetypal ideas of firms and markets. The purpose of this collectionwith contributions from European and American scholarsis to blend empirical research with conceptual discussion of networks under three main headings: Resource Flows, Mutual Expectations, and Information Flows. The contributors come from varying backgrounds: organization studies, economics, business history, marketing, and information systems. Together they are concerned with when, why, and how firms engage in inter-organizational networking, rather than relying on arms-length market relations or in-house procurement.

                                    Download Description

This book provides a comprehensive overview of Japanese labour market institutions and practices with respect to employment issues and labour payments. It contains extensive discussion of the effects of industrial relations, small business activity, business cycles and schooling on work and pay. An early chapter is devoted to presenting, in an accessible manner, essential labour market ideas and concepts that recur throughout the text. Important topics covered include (i) unions and wage determination, (ii) the breakdown of total labour costs, (iii) the Japanese bonus system, (iv) the employment life-cycle, (v) small businesses and subcontracting, (vi) pay and productivity over the business cycle. A key feature is that subject areas and themes are examined within a comparative United States/European framework. This allows assessments of whether or not the structure and performance of the Japanese labour market has differed from experience elsewhere.

                                      Book Description

Though the world's population continues to grow, total fertility rates are dropping below replacement level in many parts of the world. The Baby Bust, a landmark book of essays by demographic, economic, and political science experts, examines the global birth dearth and its causes, implications, and policy options. Focusing in large part on the United States, this book also includes data from Europe and Japan and makes important comparisons between the three regions. It concludes with suggestions for making America's future sound and prosperous, through the regularization and legalization of appropriate levels of immigration; enhancing governmental efforts to increase productivity; and finally, ending the present waste of so many underutilized members of the workforce, particularly minorities and the poor. Book Description

Despite the recent economic problems experienced in Japan, its extraordinary long-term growth is partly the result of its sophisticated use of its workers to increase productivity. This book examines the employment system practiced widely in Japan and compares it to the system found most often in the US, considering how the two systems have evolved and how they have affected economic performance since World War II. The authors develop two basic models, one characterized by long-term job security, worker involvement with work practices, and continuous training or retraining of workers (the Japanese model), and one characterized by less job security, rigid job classifications, adversarial relations between managers and workers, and minimal training (the US model). The authors argue that these models are not qualitatively different and that there is no single best practice that yields the best performance. Alternative systems can produce equally good results, they contend, if the elements of work practices at the firm level are integrated with governmental policies that complement those practices. Based on a large research project carried out in both countries, the book concludes with the lessons that each country can learn from the employment practices of the other.
