'Post Modernism' often just sounds like an excuse to ramble incessant contradictory bs to justify the meaning behind why things are the way they are. It's some stupid alternative term for the cycle of evolution. The fact that the world is growing and ideas are changing. It's an interesting, yet very puzzling and irritating topic. The bottomline is - Post Modernism is open to personal interpretation and it's meaning is based on your own understanding and perceptions in response to it. You don't have to influenced by college textbooks or the typical cocky college-educated smart-@$$. Anyone who truly appeciates 'art' (I believe) should be open-minded and accepting towards different ideas and responses, and not constantly bitching and whining, trying to reinforce their own presumedly educated understanding of the ideals and aesthetics behind Post-modernism or whatever. As far as I am concerned, 'Post-bloody-Modernism' is over (if it ever existed) and we should all just enjoy art for what it is and not what it must be.

This wonderful book has helped me understand the word "post-modern", which has replaced "serendipity" and "oxymoron" as the word I spew out when I am intimidated by how clever other people are and panic.

I have great respect for Charles Jencks as an architect, and as a critic of art relating to such. Therefore the book should be retitled, What is Postmodern Architecture? Or what is everything about Post-Modernism except the art? The main focus seems to be on the industrial world which created the art, rather then the art. Seems hardly revolutionary or even relevant since everyone and their brother and sister has written on that subject since 1820. I was hoping for something which would address the art, but I was sorely disappointed. The constant focus on the world around the buildings of postmodernism dragged and was inebriatingly dull (It got to the point where the author was forced to contradict himself to make the book interesting). The focus of Postmoderism was once architecture, however, now the focus has shifted, it seems everyone except the academics know this. Not only was his sections on art and literature stupid, but incorrect, and blunderingly light. I expected more from Jencks, being the great mind of the century he was. If you want to know anything helpful and relevant pretaining to Post Modernism today, do not read this book. But hey if you want to know about your father's post modernism, read this book!

Learn the term........2000-05-14

From the architect who played a vital role in the formation of "Second Modernism" ("Post-Modernism"), here is a book that explains it all: why Modernism failed and why the polemical "post" was a necessary addition. Anyone who has been baffled by the vague connotations of either term will be enlightened with sufficient examples. This book lives up to its title; it is mandatory for anyone attempting to understand the rise of multiculturalism and self-consciousness. As such, it provides a great "lens" for viewing all works of the 20th century; and although it doesn't focus per se on Modernist literature (cf. Rand's The Fountainhead), WHAT IS POST-MODERNISM crushes any out-dated philosophers under its powerful weight.

I could have come up with something better.......1999-12-15

This best is great if you want to see other photographers photographs and how they lit there pictures (but not in detial). It does not talk about lighting. It just gives examples. You can learn more doing tests yourself. This is a good book for the price.

Great Tutorials.......1999-12-03

Great book. You won't find explanations on how the camera works or how different lenses behave in here. This is a book for those who already know how to use their equipment but are looking for new and different idea. Lots of different styles and techniques are illustrated by top and side diagrams that I found to be quiet helpful. This book is a great learning source for studio photography techniques.

GOOD BUT NO CIGAR.......1999-01-03

This was a good book if you already know alot about lighting. The problem is this that it doesn`t talk about lighting it just shows you examples. Doesn`t say why you put this light here and what effect it has on the film. I do say though it is worth it to add it to your libary if the price is right.

Really good but could have been much better.......1998-11-03

An excellent reference for the studio photographer. However I feel that the info on each lighting lacks crucial information, such as light ratios. If you have five different light sources it's crucial to know which is the main one and what its intensity is in relation to the others. Since these books are about the lighting and nothing but the lighting, I feel that such details should be in there. It would also be nice to know something more about the darkroom and/or the digital post production of the shots, because the effects in the shots are only partially created by the lighting.

Absolutely great. A must for beginning glamor photographers.......1999-09-07

He gives mostly color pictures with narative of all the why's and how's of doing the shot. Many well known Hollywood personalities are mingled with other glamor photographs. He has diagrams of the lighting equipment and does mostly Nikon camera work using 35mm Kodachrome ISO 25 film.

Don't bother.......2002-07-25

This book is a complete waste of time and money for anyone looking for information or images on glamour photography. Very little substance of use. I own approximately 15 books in the area of glamour photography and have read and studied them all. I use them to develop my technical abiliy and creative vision. The 3 best buys I've found for content are "Successful Glamour Photography" by John Kelly, "Part-Time Glamour Photography Full-Time Income" by Joe Farace and "Lighting For Glamour Photography" by David Kimber. These 3 books cover most aspects of glamour photography from the technical to finding models and selling your photographs. Hope this helps those of you looking for more detailed information on the subject of glamour photography.

You wont find any great secrets to photographing the nude in this book. The author seems more concerned on ways of covering the nude than photographing it. Photographic examples are glib and fomulatic looking. Photographs are composed and lighted for soap and skin care product ads that would be aimed at the female consummer and won't offend granma.

Feeling let down.......2001-04-13

A number of years ago I thoroughly enjoyed Nancy Brown's book on Advertising Photography and so I ordered her book on Nude Photography sight unseen. I was very disappointed. This book gives very few details on what is a very complicated subject and also manages to give too much information on some very obvious points. I was also disappointed with the photographs. A lot of them were the same in pose and lighting and, although I do understand that the author is doing a series of non-nude photographs with capes, those photos do not belong in this book. The lighting diagrams give very little information and the size of those diagrams and the size of the some of the print take up an inordinate amount of the pages. This book is a very quick read with little information. Had this been an article in a photography magazine I would not be complaining so loudly. For the price of this book however, I feel that the author has let us down.

A Good Start.......2001-03-10

I first noticed this book at a photo store. After a few minutes browsing I thought it looked interesting. However after buying it I found there was little more to it than what I had picked up in a quick browse. There are some interesting perspectives on working with models. There are also a few technical hints, and some advice on breaking in the business. But I thought none of the topics was covered in sufficient depth to be useful. It's a good start to a book that needs to either focus topics or expand greatly to be useful.

The movement for a shorter workweek that once defined the labor movement in the United States was largely displaced by the new corporatist structure of organized labor in the post-New Deal era. Labor's Time examines the changes that occurred within organized labor and traces their influence on the decline of the shorter hours movement. Focusing on the internal union politics of the influential United Automobile Workers and Local 600, its chapter at Henry Ford's massive River Rouge factory, Jonathan Cutler demonstrates how an all-but-forgotten interracial movement for a shorter workweek during the 1950s and 1960s became a casualty of an increasingly top-heavy union bureaucracy that lost touch with the desires, fears, and aspirations of rank and file workers and dug its own grave in the process.

Cutler examines the political context in which the shorter hours movement emerged within Local 600 in the 1940s, then chronicles the attempts by Walter Reuther, the head of the UAW, to suppress it. Cutler also reviews the role the Communist Party played in the controversy. Finally, he documents the UAW response to rank and file pressure for a shorter workweek, and how the local's own organizational flaws allowed Reuther and the national union to wrest control from the dissidents.

The inner-workings of UAW politics..........2007-05-06

This is a well written book on the political struggles in the UAW leadership over the 30-40 (30 hours workweek for 40 hours pay) movement located in UAW Local 600, the famous river rouge plant. The book is clear and reads quite quickly. If your looking for a book that delves into some of the inner workings of the UAW in the post-war era this is a decent start. Unfortunately though, it is written a bit from the perspective of the leadership - - often times as a reader I felt that the rank-and-file were being relegated to a background position. THe pressure from below was always a central factor as to why the leadership acts in certain ways but we often are not privy to the logic that the rank-and-file is coming to the situation with. Throughout, we get a rather one-dimensional view of the membership - especially in Local 600. Again, this is a good book very much so worth reading. However, if you have an interest in the UAW, you should also read "The Most Dangerous Man in Detroit" by Nelson Lichtenstein.
