Lots of info...but a duplicate of another work.......2007-07-10

If you are to purchase only one of Codina's books, I would recommend this one. However...he has the same book, with 2 different titles. I purchased both of them assuming they would be different since their publication dates are years apart. They are not. The above book, Handbook of Jewellry Techniques, is the same as Goldsmithing & Silver Work: Vessels, Ornaments, etc. So save yourself some money and purchase the less expensive of the 2.

Author Tobias guides the reader through that awful experience of losing a job. Employees sometimes need to know what there rights are, and this book helps. Useful for me as I negotiated severance and letters of recommendation...something that my employer really didn't want to do.

This book is excellent. A great help for those who have recently been fired from a job or who are expecting to get the axe. I especially felt that the chapters on negotiating a separation package were useful.

Know your rights!, and use them........2005-12-27

Too many people are completely ignorant of their rights in general. Employment law is no different. This book is not about how to be a good employee and not get fired, it's not about office politics, it's not there to hold your hand through that tough time. It is a book about knowing and exercising your legal rights as an employee. Learn how to protect yourself at work before you even get the job. I highly reccomend this book.

GOT RIPPED!.......2005-06-25

The book was a great read for employment law; but when you think you have a case based on what you read in this book and get to the office and are charged $250 for consultation (1/2 hour)as he takes calls while meeting you, you start to feel a bit ripped off. All the info in the book that I thought made a case meant absolutely nothing when I went to meet this lawyer at his office. Before you consult, buy and read a couple of other books and get as much free consul as you can if at all possible...

A helpful book at the right time for my career..........2004-10-15

As a successful college football coordinator, I realize that my job is always under public scrutiny. Regardless of the fact that I, and the team, am highly successful and that we make our yearly trip to the Holiday Bowl, there is always the outside chance that people are not satisfied with my performance. With my ability to scheme. With my ability to adjust during a game. With my ability to develop talent. With my ability to utilize talent. But I digress.

The previous review noted that the book was only good if you are planning to sue. I don't see this as a negative. In fact, the threat of a lawsuit is certainly a reasonable way to maintain one's position. Also, I've discovered that it's very important to have photographs of one's superior in, shall we say, a "compromising position". I got that idea from the movie "The Firm", and it's allowed me to maintain a career track that is highly enviable.

I appreciate the advice in this book in response to getting fired, in particular the section dealing with "how to protect your pension". Why, just last year I gave my good friend Bull some advice on this very subject which turned out to be a huge help for him. He's now sitting out on his bass boat, fishing while collecting an amazing pension.

The part of this book that I disagree with is entitled "the right way to resign your position". There is no right way and no right time to do this. First, make them fire you. Screw them if they can't see your brilliance. Second, make sure you have those compromising photographs! These ensure that your boss complements you publicly, like "Greg is doing the best job in the country".

In all, this book was very helpful to me, and I plan to use many of these strategies to ensure proper compensation if I am fired. Oh, and I'll publish those pictures too. Which should serve as a reminder - never fall asleep in a strip club in Mexico if your friend has a camera! Ah ha ha ha ha ha!

Emotional strength during a tough job crisis.......2001-07-20

During a restructuring phase at my company, i had the heavy feeling of not knowing if I was going to be next on the ax list. I stumbled across this book at a bookstore, not really looking for it. Reading the title, I said to myself that this is what I need right now. Very good solid stable advice from a seasoned pro in this field. Knowledge is power and this book gives you an extra kick of power.

A lot of bad stuff follows the big green fin headed guy around, even if he doesn't want it to. Given this, he has finally been given the arse from the police force, somewhat for political reasons.

Given that this will in no way stop the superhuman menaces, especially ultra-powerful new arch-nemesis types, and will only make a few people feel better, it is really pretty silly.

Especially when you get invaded by aliens.

This is a super book with great advice on negotiating a severance, and getting out there to hit the pavement running again. Its a shame to see such a great book out of print, but if you can find a copy, its worth the wait!

Affirmative action has been and continues to be a volatile, complex, and hotly debated issue. In this volume, Ronald Turner provides a comprehensive resource and guide through the maze of preferential treatment doctrine, U.S. Supreme Court decisions relating to affirmative action, and agency regulations and practices. Rather than focus on the moral or constitutional issues involved, Turner seeks to provide an objective analysis of the evolution of the legal concept of affirmative action--to describe what the law has actually meant in practice rather than judge whether affirmative action is either right or wrong, constitutional or unconstitutional. To this end, Turner defines and examines what affirmative action was in the early 1970s when the concept was first enshrined in law and explores how the Supreme Court is now interpreting the concept. He also discusses cases involving set-aside programs and analyzes other federal and state government programs in which constitutional principles and Executive Orders remain untouched by the Supreme Court's recent conservative rulings. Following an introductory chapter in which he reviews the basic issues involved in the affirmative action debate, Turner discusses the origins and development of the affirmative action concept. He then examines affirmative action in the employment jurisprudence of the U.S. Supreme Court and the application of the Court's rulings by the lower courts in selected cases. The requirements of Executive Order 11246 and its implementing regulations and the impact of the order on federal contractors are detailed in a separate chapter. Turner also offers a brief treatment of the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission's affirmative action guidelines. Finally, the author explores the judicial review of minority and women business enterprise programs, with particular emphasis on the Supreme Court's 1989 ruling which invalidated a minority business enterprise statute enacted by the City of Richmond, Virginia. By thoroughly analyzing the record of the courts and legislative and administrative initiatives in affirmative action, this book offers guidelines and information which will be invaluable to all segments of the labor management community involved in and responsible for affirmative action and preferential treatment of minorities and women.
