What a joyous occasion it becomes to whirl through the new book on Venetian-born Carlo Marchiori, a master of many arts, who now lives and works in Calistoga, Ca., the northern-most town in Napa Valley. The book not only presents his life and work in a colorful, well-photographed journal, but it has the magical touch of Carlo's own imagination for the styling of the photographs, layout, and storyline. Now his mastery of arts includes book design as well as painting, drawing, sculpture, construction, architecture, and costume design!

A self-proclaimed great illusionist, he nontheless informs us of the historical references in his art while capturing our imaginations on an illustrated magical journey back through time. The book is storybook, history, and journal, all rolled into one, and written with Carlo's great sense of humor and gusto for life. From the moment you turn the first page, you are captured by Renaissance man Marchiori's presentation, all colorful, fun, and fantastic. It is a delightful glimpse into his most beautiful imaginings, and they are bountiful. You laugh, smile, ooooo, and ahhhhh, and see life above the mundane, as does Carlo!

It is interesting to note that he allows tours of his home, and has a shop and artist studio in Calistoga, where various pieces of his art are sold. These are extraordinary experiences not to be missed while in Napa Valley.

"Safari-Safari" is the story of Ernest Abernathy's ventures into Africa, where a realization came while dealing with a rhino that effectively led to his evolution from being a dedicated hunter into a life concentrating on the conservation of wildlife and retiring from hunting altogether at the ripe old age of forty. Jack O'Connor, former shooting editor of Outdoor Life magazine was very much an influence on Ernest's decision to venture on a Safari in Botswana, which led to other African experiences described in detail within this book. The ultimate story of this book, however, is not all about guns and shooting, but more about the not hunting, meaning the interesting details about the animals, environment, people, and cultures encountered. It's about how the author came from for a life of hunting, along with some interest in conservation, then he came to Africa, what happened there, and the events leading to the reversal of those interests and his retirement from hunting. An amazing tale of life and death
Safari-Safari is a wonderful account of a man risking life and limb on the African Continent. It is an amazing record of a man on a hunt who respected and loved the animals he hunted. His search for 'trophies' was the result of his admiration of the animals he sought. Even though his devotion to conservation officially came later, his respect was obvious when he went on the safaris. 'Trophy targets' meant the old, mature and aged animals, the ones who would become the victims of the predators that would destroy them slowly and painfully. As a young man, Dr. Abernathy earned, deservedly, the respect of the 'white hunters', the professional hunters, who would usually give disdain over admiration. The respect by the many trackers, bearers and other company was obviously never given lightly and was bestowed on Dr. Abernathy in rare fashion. This book is a journal a most exciting adventure. Exhaustive treks through desert and marsh were the order of the day. Dr Abernathy is NO 'Walter Mitty'. One could only wish that the 'African Conservationists' would have sought the advice and counsel of a true sportsman like Dr Abernathy and his professional hunters. Even as an 'amature' in Africa, Dr Abernathy's love and respect for wildlife was evident. His iron nerves in the face of almost certain death was mystifying. I strongly recommend this book to hunters and conservationists alike.

Will editorial cartoons stick to a Teflon President? (No).......2003-05-29

When tripping down memory lane by flipping through the pages of "Best Editorial Cartoons of the Year, 1988," or any of its companion volumes in this series, what stands out the most are not the constant topics such as Congress getting nothing done, violence in the Middle East, concerns about the economy and defense spending, but the topics that are specific to 1987. That was the year of the doomed nomination of Robert Bork to the U.S. Supreme Court and a players strike in the NFL, a great opportunity for editorial cartoonists to declare a plague on both houses. Then there was the PTL scandal that brought down Jim Bakker and his wife Tammy Faye Bakker, a woman born to end up in editorial cartoons. Often, I find some of my favorite cartoons have to do with well-known personalities who died during the year: Jim Borgman has Fred Astaire dancing on the ceiling in the reception room in heaven and Bob Englehart drew the set from "The Honeymooners" with the figure of Alice weeping over the death of Jackie Gleason.

1987 was a good year for award-winning cartoonists, with Mike Peters picking up the National Headliners Club Award for his Iran-Contra action figures, Berke Breathed shaking the earth by winning the 1987 Pulitzer Prize for "Bloom County," and Dick Locher earning the Fischetti Award for a cartoon of Reagan as Karnak ("The answer is: 'I Don't Know!' Now, what's the question?"). The Iran-Contra hearings provided lots of fodder for satire, with Marine Lt. Col. Oliver North suddenly becoming a national figure, along with National Security Advisor John Poindexter. Meanwhile, Ronald Reagan continued along with his "Teflon Presidency" while over on the Democratic side potential candidates Gary Hart and Joe Biden saw their campaigns self-destruct. You look over all the stupid things politicians were doing and no wonder the American public is jaded about scandals involving politicians. Then there was the controversy over promoting condoms as a way of reducing the spread of AIDS, just one of a dozen topics that cuts both ways in inflaming the passions of the American public. Still, all thing considered 1987 was a very good year for the pens dipped in venom by the nation's editorial cartoonists.

Too general, too elementary.......1999-07-20

This book appears as though it was written very generically as the template of a series about starting businesses, and then customized only slightly by the individual type of business. There's a lot of talk about how to select a computer and what kind of work ethic you ought to develop, bookkeeping, and even an entire chapter about choosing the right business! One would think that by the time this book is in hand, that decision had already been made. A disappointment.

A big disappointment.......1997-11-20

I am looking to set up an employment agency in my professional field of expertise, where I know that there is a big gap in the market. I already run my own business so I was looking for help in starting up an EMPLOYMENT AGENCY, not in setting up a business. This book could be retitled SETTING UP A BUSINESS IN USA. There is a lot of content on setting up a business and very little specific to an employment agency. This book has tried to be everything, and fails by not being specific. A big thumbs down for my purposes.
