Fantastic Read-brings back memories, Road trip anyone?.......2007-03-20
When I was younger & in high school, I had the wonderful leisure of visiting & enjoying some of these places, all too often time spent just sitting back and relaxing, simply enjoying the surroundings, just the kinda things kids do when they find a cool place to hang out.. Had I known then what I know now I would have appreciated it so much more and held onto it alot harder, because those moments are long gone, and these treasured places are now in a book that now anyone can enjoy. I delight in the fact that I was able to be in a place that many many years ago was a bustling commerce, someones home that is now a museum or a spot high enough to have a fantstic view, even when a view wasnt considered all so practical, LOL. This book not only took me back with memories that are long gone but still cherished, but this book truly makes for an excellent read, I say that after reading it, you will want to get into your car and say, " I want to see that!" and you can. I know I still do when ever I am in Pedro or LA. Appreciate the time and effort that went into this book a true labor of love by the author, written for those of us that appreciate our cities history and the memories that can be made from the visits to these amazing places, that are more often then not, all but forgotten in todays hustle and bustle. My true thanks for a book I am glad was finally written, that I can read again and again, and hear it in a voice that has never been forgotten.
Excellent look into local/ overlooked history of LA........1999-09-09
Kielbasa did a fine job of narrating. His in- depth look into the local history of Southern California was impressive. Furthermore, he ties in the people whose names now dot our landscape with the the adobes and ranches that once made up what is now LA County. Flows very smoothly for average reader.

Cigars of the Pharaoh is one of Tintin's earliest adventures. He and Snowy are on a cruise to Egypt when they happen to meet Professor Sophocles Sarcophagus (the first of Tintin's absent-minded professors) and join his expedition. But they become embroiled in a complicated scheme involving a fakir, cigars marked with an unusual brand, and Rajijah, the poison of madness. Most significantly, Tintin meets the detectives Thompson and Thomson as well as the movie mogul Rastapopolous. While Cigars of the Pharaoh is a self-contained story, some of the mysteries are resolved in The Blue Lotus. Herge wrote Cigars in 1932 then revised it in 1955, which is why the art has the more polished look of later stories as well as the anachronistic glimpse of a copy of Destination: Moon. --David Horiuchi

Graphic SF Reader.......2007-09-03
This adventure of Tintin's is a fair bit of fun as he arrives in Port Said and runs around with Doctor Sarcophagus as he looks for the tomb of a particular pharaoh.
Finding it, there are a few more recent mummies contained therein.
Throw in a film crew, some nogoodniks, and a firing squad for Tintin. Snowy is set to be sacrificed to Siva, as well, for some reason.
The first discrete improvement........2007-02-28
Herge, The Cigars of the Pharaoh (Methuen, 1934)
The Cigars of the Pharaoh was the beginning of Tintin's adventures leaving, at least for the big picture, the realm of the episodic and getting into big story arcs with returning characters (this is the book that introduces Thomson and Thompson, who would become two of the series' most beloved characters). The adventure itself still has much of the episodic feel one tends to find with things that are serialized, with lots of mini-cliffhangers and miraculous escapes, but this is where Herge really started to find his feet; it's still early work, and reads like early work, but it's good early work. ***
Tintin struggles with smugglers in Africa and India.......2006-05-18
Cigars of the Pharaoh is an early volume in a series of graphic novel adventures starring the fictional international reporter Tintin, a young man who ends up solving mysteries rather than reporting news.
In this installment Tintin and his talking dog Snowy are taking a quiet holiday cruise where they meet an absent-minded scholar, a movie producer, and the twin Thompson brothers detectives. Arrested by the Thompsons because someone planted heroin in his room Tintin jumps ship in Port Said and bumps into the professor.
He agrees to help the professor seek out a hidden Egyptian tomb. When they find the tomb, it is full of mummified archaeologists and cases of curiously labeled cigars. Then they are drugged and captured and put on a ship.
A series of escapes and captures keeps the story exciting as Tintin keeps running into the professor, the Thompsons, and the movie producer, while running from an international gang of smugglers and making his way from Egypt to India.
Eventually, he solves the mystery of the Cigars of the Pharaoh, while portraying the various populations of this part of the world without patronizing them. An exciting adventure that continues in a second volume called The Blue Lotus.
This series is great at portraying the world between the two great wars in a way that is simple yet respectful. The adventures are well crafted and the color illustrations are sumptuous in detail.
"At home they call me Tintin": Cigars of the Pharaoh.......2005-04-21
This fourth installment in the Adventures of Tintin stories has a lot going for it. Besides possessing the perfunctory Tintin suspense and drama, this story marks the debut of the Thompson twins (les Duponts in the original French) and the nefarious Rastapopoulos, billionaire, movie tycoon, and ... well, y'know, general evildoer guy.
Unique to this adventure is Dr. Sophocles Sarcophagus, the somewhat sanity-deficient Egyptologist whom Tintin encounters on a ship at the beginning of this story. This character is a textbook example of Herge's wonderful background characters, who proliferate in nearly every Tintin tale (the most notable exception being Tintin in Tibet, but I digress). A wonderfully memorable scene in Cigars of the Pharaoh is that in which Tintin learns to converse with elephants. The ending is something of a cliffhanger, causing the suitably hooked reader to experience an almost maniacal need to get his/her hands on The Blue Lotus!
A final comment: it is interesting to note that in redoing this story long after the completion of its original version, Herge has included a reference on page 1 to Marlinspike (Captain Haddock's family estate; Haddock and the house did not appear in the series until the later adventures The Crab With The Golden Claws and Red Rackham's Treasure). It's unlikely that Herge neglected to realize the continuity problem, but is this simply an indication of his having a bit of fun? Who knows? It's curious, anyway!
Tintin travels through Egypt and India.......2004-11-24
On a journey to Egypt Tintin meets absentminded Egyptologist Professor Siclone. The professor is in search of mystery. The only clue is a symbol drawn on a piece of parchment. Once in Egypt Tintin and Snowy follow the professor into an underground passageway marked by the symbol and find empty sarcophaguses marked with their names. They escape and find themselves pursued by mysterious criminals. All the while the mysterious symbol keeps turning up on stone walls, painted on trees, and on cigar labels...
This comic is fun because of the exotic landscapes. Tintin travels through Egypt and India which are drawn with exotic flare. Whenever he thinks he has entered the traditional untouched east, western civilization intrudes: He rescues a lady from bandits only to discover that he has just spoiled a scene from an adventure movie. He is captured by Bedouins who recognize him as a celebrity reporter and are happy to have him as a guest. He approaches two arabs to ask directions and finds that they are in fact the Thompson and Thomson team who have donned robes to blend in. The east meets west theme, inherent even in the mysterious cigars marked with an ancient Egyptian symbol, kept me guessing through the book.
The Cigars of the Pharohs maintains the quality of other books in the series. There are jokes for children and for adults, so it is a good purchase for families and public libraries. There are some loose ends which are tied up on part 2 of the story: The Blue Lotus.

The search for the mystery behind the cigars.......2005-04-01
First published in Le Petit Vingtième between 8/12 1932 and 8/2 1934. The book appeared in 1934 . Redrawn in 1955. It was first published in English in 1971.
A colurful and detailed adventure , Tintin and his dog Snowy meet up with an eccentric Egyptologist on a cruise , taking Tintin on a danger-filled adventure from Egypt to Arabia to India , in a hunt for whoever is behind the mystery of the Cigars of the Pharaoh , he is framed for heroin possesion , caught up in an Arabian war and sentenced to be executed , lost in the desert , locked up in a mental assylum in India , before being led to an international ring of drug trafficers. It is amazing the amount of detail Herge worked into these adventure comics.
Many of us grew up on them and love them for the nostalgia value.
I loved the animation in the underground Pharaoh's tomb.

The first truly great Tintin adventure........2002-04-29
'Cigars Of The Pharoah' traverses the pyramids of Egypt, the deserts of Arabia, the jungles and palaces of India; and sees a vacationing Tintin stumbling on a gun-running, drug-smuggling plot centring on crates of Flor Fina cigars. An encounter with absent-minded archaeologist Sophocles Sarcophagus instigates the action and sees our heroes, among other things, cast adrift the ocean in coffins, where they are attacked by sharks; press-ganged during a tribal war, and lined up for execution; crashing a plane in the jungle and learning the language of elephants; committed to a lunatic asylum; escaping assassination attempts by a shady fakir; as well as participating in the more familiar car chases, train adventures, mountain climbs; meanwhile, Snowy is mobbed for attacking a sacred cow.
The two parts of the story are sensitively differentiated by Herge's astonishing drawing, the bright wide plains of Egypt contrasting with more richly colourful Indian milieux, with their elaborate costumes and decorations. Herge pulls off some remarkable tableaux - the Egyptian death chamber of mummified European archaeologists; Tintin's lurid, narcotic hallucination; his flight through the gates of Mecca from an army; his sitting on elephant-back in the jungle with mad Professor Sarcophagus. Although Herge respects the native hierarchies of the countries he draws, his image of beleagured colonialism is quite damning, with the unforgettable decline of an already barmy Sarcophagus into a babbling madman dressed in top hat, tails and undergarments shooting at butterflies a warning to all who would excavate ancient cultures for European benefit.
But 'Cigars', the first truly great Tintin adventure (and part one of a story that concludes with 'The Blue Lotus'), is most notable for the introduction of two legendary characters, Thomson and Thompson, those near-identical, always resourceful, but ultimately hapless police detectives; Magrittean, bolwer-hatted Englishmen doomed to each other's punning company: 'What a surprise to see your face again! We'd lost you completely!' 'To be precise, we'd completely lost face!'
amazing book.......2002-01-29

Good book for mapping business processes.......2007-05-09
A business processes is just like any other process. It has inputs, someone processes the inputs (hopefully by adding value) and an output is created. The only difference between a business process and a manufacturing process is that the output in the business process is typically paper (or an electronic version of paper). This book does a good a job of explaining this and even offers key words for the user to look/listen for when mapping out the process to point you towards non-valued activities.
On a personal note, I have found for business processes that involve multiple people doing the "same" job that it is most beneficial to interview each person separately. Map out every detail of each individual's process and listen for the key words noted in the book. Once completed label each person as 1, 2, 3, etc. (hide the names to protect the innocent) Then put each person's process one on top of the other on a single sheet. Start at the left and map towards the right. Put each process step in line with the one above it. This method will very quickly show just how the CYA factor creeps into a business process and creates a monster.
Often overlooked part of process design & cost control.......2001-07-07
This book is a highly readable, informative approach to an activity that is often missing from process design, process improvement initiatives and cost analyses. The premise is that processes consist of tasks or activities that either add value or don't add it. The goal is to discover and eliminate the non-value adding activities, which, of course, saves money, reduces cycle time and improves efficiency.
The trick is discovering non-value adding activities and making sure that you don't misclassify a necessary task or activity as non-value adding, which causes its own set of problems. This book steps you through the assessment process. It does so in a straightforward manner and provides a wealth of tools and techniques along the way. The first four chapters place value assessment into context with a chapter each devoted to business stakeholders, business processes, business process evolution and methods for improving processes. These chapters are rich in content and cover the basics well. The author makes good use of both page layout, illustrations and good writing to get you up to speed on the fundamentals of organization, process and value concepts that you need to know before proceeding with the analysis and assessment phases.
Chapters 5 through 7 provide procedures for performing the analysis phase, gives a well-defined framework for the analysis and step-by-step procedures for the value-added assessment process. Chapter 8 augments this with tools and techniques for quantifying the process time and cost elements. This chapter provides process flows, calculations and tips and advice. This chapter is also heavily illustrated and makes excellent use of tables, which removes any uncertainty or ambiguity. One of the best parts of this book is the non-value added dictionary that is provided in chapter 9. Every task or activity that is a possible non-value added step is listed in alphabetical order, ranging from "Adjusts" to "Waits for". There is a page devoted to each, which follows a specific format which is a nice template for adding your own activities and tasks. The format includes a definition of the step, symbol used to represent it, category, an example, rationale for identifying the step as non-value added, synonyms, related actions and notes. Not all steps provided in the book will be non-value add in all processes. For example, in software engineering an inspection is one of the most effective quality assurance methods with a proven record for catching defects early in the development life cycle. Because software development is usually a one-off process that produces a unique product inspections are warranted. Use your judgement here.
This book is unique and essential if you are developing processes, initiating process improvement or performing cost analysis. It's exceptionally well written and should be considered more a tool than a book.

Book Description
The Necessity of Organization describes Mary Kenney O'Sullivan's struggle to improve labor conditions through trade unionism. Appointed the first woman organizer for the American Federation of Labor in 1892, she went on to be a co-founder of the Women's Trade Union League, formed in 1903 as a cross-class alliance of women workers and their middle- and upper-class allies. The possibilities and limits of trade unionism for women, given the class and gender constraints of the period, are the focus of this book.
