    Book Description

Petra Blaisse is a brilliant Dutch interior designer and landscape architect who champions an ambitious new role for landscape architecture and interior design. Her designs call the rigor and rigidity of architectural form into question with solutions that are variable and fluid both outside and in. Her talent is transforming ideas into overpowering sensory experiences.

This book presents the entire spectrum of her work for the first time. It includes extensive documentation of her most important projects, including the Public Library in Seattle, the Hackney Empire Theatre in London, the Mick Jagger Centre in Dartford, and the Netherlands Dance Theatre in The Hague. It also includes an interview between the editor, Kayoko Ota, and Petra Blaisse as well as illuminating essays by noted authors in the field.

This book is an inspiration for architects, interior designers, landscape architects, and planners of all kinds. It is full of stimulating new directions for the field.

      Book Description

On 25 November 2000 the Republic of Suriname celebrated twenty-five years of independence. The flowering of the visual arts in Suriname over those twenty-five years produced an impressive body of work, created not only by established artists but also by a promising younger generation. "Visual art in Suriname" offers an overview of 129 works (paintings, sculpture, works on paper) that are representative of the quality and the diversity in the arts.

The book opens with an introductory essay on the history of the visual arts in Suriname in the twentieth century. This is presented chronologically, introducing the artists, art schools and organizations, and placing these in the context of national and international developments. The development of Surinam art reflects European and American art movements, as well as the many other traditions (Indian, Maroon, Creole, Javanese, Hindu, Chinese) which together make up the cultural mosaic of Suriname.

"Visual art in Suriname" is a updated reprint of "Twenty years of visual art in Suriname 1975-1995". This reprint contains 40 new works of art and essential additional information.

What a super book. If you are interested in postcard history, or a lover of the adirondacks, this book has both.
The book includes 8 chapters, with 6 of the chapters giving biographies of postcard photographers of the 19th and 20 century,Mandeville, Beach, Kollecker, Ameden,Wooley, and Cassen
It was hard to put this book down.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent complete view of Early Adirondack photographers.......1999-11-10

Author has produced an interesting book of those early twentieth century photographers, whose works can still be found on early postcards. Much more than a coillection of post card images, the author has produced a book with much historical significance.

                        Book Description

Public-private collaboration in infrastructure projects takes place in a variety of institutional frameworks worldwide. This volume considers the different cultural, political and legal settings in the US, UK, Japan and other countries and regions where policymakers are reconsidering traditional mechanisms for raising and deploying capital.

By focusing on concrete examples in specific countries, the editors and contributors draw useful lessons for strong sector performance in telecommunications, power, water and social infrastructure. Innovative strategies that work can be modified and refined in other sectors and other countries. Going beyond ideological debate, this volume presents a pragmatic approach to best practice, one that combines market-oriented solutions with governmental oversight according to the specific cultural and institutional situations.

Regulators, academics, policymakers, politicians, and students in public policy, finance and economics will find this volume practical and original.

                          Book Description

Here are stories and color photographs that will excite your spirit and lead you on scenic adventures through a land deemed contrary because it brims with contradictions in the landscapes that it puts side by side. This land changes its look as readily as a jet-setter switches wardrobes. Cool, fern-draped valleys sidle up to snow-capped mountains cloaked in conifers. A few miles distant, desertscapes coated with cactus bask under a lamp of sun.

Some compare the Southwest's environmental transitions to what you'd experience traveling from Mexico to Canada. For this book, author Craig Childs trekked over hundreds of miles, observing the transitions close to his Southwest home and discovering something about life. In crystalline prose he relates the landscape to a passage in his life. Scattering his father's ashes in remote Canyon Creek, he reflects:

"I did not think of my father and his ashes as a traveler, ceaselessly flowing from one confluence to the next. Instead, I thought of him as a process. A story being told. I thought of him as a pool of unknown trout and the busted trunk of an alder half sticking up through the water. I thought of him as a raw, deep canyon heaped with boulders and mazes of creek passages -- the canyon he had once promised me. I thought of him as the beginning and the end at once."

Childs' journey of discovery covers Alpine to the Little Blue River; up Mount Graham, a perfectly contained sky island; around Sedona; through Canyon Country; along the lower Colorado River; and through the Sonoran Desert to the Sea of Cortes, with magnificent full-color photography by internationally recognized Arizona Highways photographers illustrating the range of his travels.

The Changing Nature of Work envisions the future nature of work, its effect on workers and organizations, and the expanded knowledge that will be needed to optimize its returns. The book examines critical post-industrial transformations in work, workers, and the experience of working and assesses the implications of those changes. It investigates what is driving change at work, what is constraining it, and where work is headed as governments, societies, and work organizations respond to its revolutionary thrust.

                                    Book Description

Human impacts on the environment are largely driven by economic forces. If a more ecologically sustainable world is to be achieved, significant changes must be made to the current growth- and consumption-dependent economic system. The Frontier Issues in Economic Thought series was designed to assist the growing number of economists and others who are responding to the need for new thinking about economics in the face of environmental and social forces that are reshaping the world.

The Changing Nature of Work examines the causes and effects of the rapid transformation of the world of work. It provides concise summaries of the key writings on work and workplace issues, extending the frontiers of labor economics to include the often overlooked social and psychological dimensions of work.

The book begins with a foreword by former Secretary of Labor Robert Reich that presents labor in contemporary perspective. An introductory overview provides a brief history of the changing nature of work and situates current problems in the context of longer-term developments. Following that are eight topical sections that feature three- to five-page summaries for each of the ten to twelve most important articles or book chapters on a subject.

                                    Sections cover.

                                  • new directions in labor economics
                                  • social and psychological dimensions of work and unemployment
                                  • globalization and labor
                                  • new technologies and organizational change
                                  • flexibility and internal labor markets
                                  • new patterns of industrial relations
                                  • family, gender, paid and unpaid work
                                  • difference and diversity in the workplac.

The book provides a roadmap for scholars on the vast and diverse literature concerning labor issues, and affords students a quick overview of that rapidly changing field. It is an important contribution to the series and is a valuable book for anyone interested in labor, as well as for students and scholars of labor economics, industrial sociology, industrial relations, social psychology, and their respective disciplines.

The Frontier Issues in Economic Thought summaries, along with the overview essays, provide a markedly different service from the standard collection of abstracts. The series will benefit not only scholarly work but the application of our best thinking to the problems of the times.

                                      Description:
This manuscript considers how changes in the external environment of organizations have altered the world of work. While global trends are identified, particular attention is paid to the Canadian context. Canada is currently experiencing a period of economic growth. But some new challenges have appeared. Canadian organizations are facing skill shortages and an aging workforce. The former is being addressed by increased use of technology and by higher levels of immigration, raising concerns about skill utilization, discrimination and the need to capitalize on this increasing workforce diversity. Organizations in Canada, similar to those in other developed economies, are also grappling with changing workforce demographics, attitudes and values, incorporating and utilizing the rapid advances in technology, and addressing globalization-related challenges such as increased competitive pressures, outsourcing and offshoring, and a global workforce that places a higher premium on cross-cultural sensitivities and skills.
