    Book Description

Los Angeles faces rapid, continuous growth in the new century. Even though today's vital infrastructure and systems are pushed beyond capacity, the greater metropolis will receive an additional two million people by 2005. To prepare for this tremendous growth, the city must reconsider its planning strategies as well as the revitalization of the downtown core--the geographical and symbolic heart of Los Angeles and, potentially, the connective tissue for all of the city's cultures. By applying original thought and creativity to the challenges of the downtown area, we can begin to plan now for the real consequences of Los Angeles's future growth.
Conceived by Richard Koshalek, L.A. Now is a collaborative design initiative to focus creativity on downtown Los Angeles and provide the foundation for its future development. L.A. Now brings together the work of UCLA architecture students under the direction of studio leader Thom Mayne (Morphosis), CalArts Graphic Design students, and Art Center film and photography students and others in two distinctive, lavishly illustrated books.
The first volume, L.A. Now, offers a virtual snapshot of Los Angeles at the beginning of the twenty-first century. A rich amalgamation of recent data, text, graphic design, and photography, this book documents the city's radical heterogeneity, hybridity, and fragmentation into four sections: Los Angeles, habitat, people, and money.

          Book Description

Drawn from a critical period of Tony Smith's career, when the artist lived in Germany from 1953-55, the Louisenberg series is named after a German geological site. Containing paintings and drawings based on an abstract grid composed of circles--some self-contained, others fused into peanut-shaped groups of two or more--the work's modular approach reflects Smith's architectural ideas and prefigures his familiar sculptural methods.

The Photographs of Ansel Adams with the Writings of John Muir

This year marks the 100th anniversary of the birth of Ansel Adams whose landmark early photographs of wild America, originally taken for the Works Progress Administration, fill the pages of this splendid volume. Adams' breathtaking images are accompanied by excerpts from the writings of Sierra Club founder John Muir, the renowned conservationist who devoted his life to celebrating and preserving the American wilderness.

          Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars American Photography at its Best.......2007-06-15

Breathtaking photos. Especially in light of the rudimentary equipment available at the time they were taken. Proves that Ansel Adams is still unsurpassed in American photography. Captures the majesty and beauty of the vanishing American wilderness. Members of Congress should view this work before voting to open refuge or wild lands to drilling and logging.

          3 out of 5 stars Poor quality.......2007-05-03

Poor reproduction quality. Actually no quality. As educational book, to study composition or something like that, perhaps the book serves.

1 out of 5 stars Not Worth Looking At.......2006-04-05

Poor reproduction quality. Actually no quality. Not approved by the Ansel Adams Publishing Rights Trust.

          1 out of 5 stars Adams wouldn't have approved.......2005-07-18

While some photos are reasonable, most are seriously flawed. Some are flat, some are excessively contrasty, others seem murky and indistinct. Some of the photos need cleaning to remove dust spots, etc. Even the title is wrong , as the book includes photos of dams and sheep. There are many other excellent books, which have been prepared from Adams prints and produced with much more care. Buy one of those.

2 out of 5 stars Are we looking at the same book?.......2005-01-02

Many of Ansel Adams' exquisite photographs call out for large reproductions, and this book displays them in a decent size format. But what a waste. The reproductions are nearly all flat and murky, with little detail in the shadow. If I had read far enough down into the customer reviews, I would have been warned; but the reviews at the top of the stack were quite favorable. Which leads me to wonder: Are we looking at the same book? I advise readers to purchase Adams books published by Little, Brown, and Company (aka "Bulfinch"). Even at smaller sizes their books display much more detail and clarity than does this disappointing edition.

The transition economies of the Europe and Central Asia Region faced unprecedented political, economic, and social change after the break-up of the Soviet Union. With assistance from the World Bank and other donors, many countries quickly accomplished a number of reforms, but progress in others has been slower. Much has been achieved--the private share of GDP in the transition countries is nearly 70 percent, and 8 countries have joined the EU--but much remains to be completed. Economies in Transition assesses the effectiveness of Bank assistance to the transition, focusing particularly on five topics: 1) private sector development; 2) governance, public sector management, and institution-building; 3) the financial sector; 4) social protection; and 5) energy. Overall Bank assistance has been successful, but there were mistakes before the true nature of transition was fully understood. The Bank internalized the emerging lessons and shifted its emphasis accordingly. This study highlights the importance of lending at prudent levels until a solid knowledge base is established, with convincing evidence of government and societal ownership of the assistance program. It contends that analysis of governance and poverty monitoring should be early features of the assistance program, active programs of stakeholder inclusion should be widely replicated, and country assistance strategies used to bolster reform capacity.

                  Book Description

The field of aerospace, which depends heavily on government funding and direction, has been particularly effected by the shifting alliances and recent financial troubles of the space powers. In a book which is both comprehensive and simple to understand, d'Angelo has collected the many pieces of a complex institutional mosaic to draw a clear picture of the entire framework. In addition to being up-to-date, the book is also a novelty in the sense that it describes the work of both national and international entities and explains how those organizations interrelate and coordinate their programs. Without making a list of figures and budgets, d'Angelo gives a clear idea of the relative weight of the various government activities. From the discussion of those activities the reader gains an understanding of the current state of affairs as well as future trends.
