Good book........2007-01-20

This book was referred to me by a proffesor, so i knew what to expect. There are some great images. There where a couple to many "Theoretical" Designs for my liking. It is a good book.

Better than a How-to.......2007-02-05

I learned much from this book about color, composition and still-life set-up. Ms. Kay's gouache paintings of flowers and fruit are unpretentious, yet refined and altogether beautiful. I think that any aspiring artist could learn more from reading the author's thoughts on her paintings and by simply attempting to copy, as an exercise, one of her paintings, than from any step-by-step art instruction manual. This is one of my favorite art books.

Gorgeous Paintings.......2002-02-14

Like the previous reviewer, I purchased the book because I was intrigued by gouache. However, I did not expect it to be a how-to book and it isn't. Ms. Kay does talk a lot about the medium: how to use it and its difference from transparent watercolor. There is much you can learn. Of course, the best part is Ms. Kay's collection of paintings. Beautiful, dynamic still lifes that are great for the artist, but are also great if you love gardening and flowers and would like a lovely book depicting lush roses, joyous pansies, and a number of other flowers, large and small, in terra cotta pots, small crystal goblets, everyday glasses. The settings could be your dining room table or a favorite shelf. There are also sketches of Venice, paintings of gardens, and a sleeping kitten that is wonderful (that's a lot for me to say since my idea of a real pet is a German Shepherd or Bernese Mountain Dog and nothing remotely feline, but I would gladly hang this pastel in my bedroom). There are several pastels and a number of casual portrait sketches. All are wonderfully done. I recommend the book highly.

Gorgeous Paintings.......2002-02-14

Not a How - To Type Book.......2001-12-12

I bought this book because I was intrigued to see a book on painting in gouache (opaque watercolor). On receiving it I was surprised as it was not the type of book I expected it to be. This is not a how-to book despite what the blurbs led me to think. This is more of a book on the life, thoughts and painting experiences of Pamela Kay as she uses gouache, watercolor, pastel and oil to express herself.

As such, it is more akin to coffee-table books that display paintings by the artist. She does provide somewhat more detail into the painting and drawing process than a coffee-table art book but not as much as I'd wished. Also, after awhile, I yearned for more variety in the paintings as the book was page after page of bowls of fruit and flowers in vases. There were a few paintings of landscapes and some sketches of people but they were too few. This is not a bad book. It can be quite enjoyable for someone who is a fan of Ms. Kay's paintings. Just understand it is more about Ms. Kay and a display of her paintings and musings than tips or techniques for painting in gouache yourself.

Interesting viewpoint...adds perspective to the Declaration........1998-12-09

I read the first 90 pages of this book for a report in a graduate course...Now I'm buying it to read the rest! Fliegelman traces the development of a new American language and a new way of using it. Public speaking and "performance", against the backdrop of the Declaration of Independence, are his focus in this unique book. Whether you agree or not, you'll find it hard to put down.

LET YOUR CHILD READ THIS BOOK TO YOU !.......2003-10-19

It is my hope this children's book not be read to older children by an adult reader. Rather the book should be read by the child to the adult audience.

Most of us are some distance from our earlier experiences in learning about the Constitution and the conditions of the times which spawned it.

Hearing a child read the book will benefit the adult listener with a quick review of the importance of the document and each person's responsibility to see that it remains alive and well in practice.

Declaring Independence is the fourth in David Graham's trilogy of photographic books about the American cultural landscape. Unable to stop searching the country for the odd, unusual and colorful, Graham has continued on his quest to find out how Americans express themselves through their environments. The result of his latest journey is this book of photographs which delves further into the complex weave of image, symbol and reality that we see as America at its finest. From coast to coast, from dinosaurs to space ships, Graham has put together an engaging and joyous collection of photographs that show what it means to be an American.

David Graham is a photographer who lives in two worlds. To pay the rent, he is a freelance photographer who shoots for magazines such as Time, Newsweek and the New York Times Magazine. He also makes photographs that come from his own private muse, yielding work that addresses the American cultural landscape. These photographs have been collected in five previous books, Alone Together (Pond Press 2002), Taking Liberties (Pond Press 2001), Land of the Free (Aperture 1999), Only in America (Knopf 1991) and American Beauty (Aperture 1987). These photographs are also to be found in major museums such as the Museum of Modern Art, NYC, the Art Institute of Chicago and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. Sign language........2004-10-04

Another wonderful collection of sixty-eight American photos from David Graham. I have another of his photo books 'Only in America' (ISBN 0394582152) and 'Declaring Independence' is sort of a continuation of the theme: the everyday Americana landscape.

The photos are mostly exterior, allowing Graham to get on with capturing his great compositions without the restraints of interior space and light. Many of them include some lettering or signage helping to reveal how American's express themselves in the environment but don't expect to see any folk here, these are photos of places and things.

Of the sixty-eight photos there are a few, I think, that don't quite work, mainly those that don't have a natural framing of sky or lack any edge to the main focal point. Most of them though, just look super and if you are collector of commonplace photo books (I certainly am) you'll want to have this latest instalment of Mr Graham's American vision.

There is a widespread perception that the structural reforms implemented in Latin America in the 1990s have failed to spur employment growth. This perception is fueled by rising unemployment, slow wage growth, rising wage inequalities and a heightened sense of economic insecurity. This year's edition of Economic and Social Progress in Latin America investigates whether this disappointing outcome can be explained by an abnormal adjustment to rapid changes in goods and capital markets, increased female participation in the workplace, technological change, and secular changes in the sector composition of output. In particular, the book examines whether there are important demands for change that are being thwarted by inappropriate institutions and rigidities.
