the Battery in the 17th century to the Upper West Side and Fifth Avenue.

The Astors certainly were at the forefront of it all. To think that Mrs. Astor had her house where New York's Four Hundred could dance on the southeast corner of 34th and Fifth, which became the original Waldorf Astoria Hotel and then the Empire State Building.

A fabulous book to go walking up and down Manhattan with.

Book Description

Now in Paperback Tradition has it that the young American republic had a natural affinity with the 17th-century Dutch oligarchy--they shared concepts of democracy, religious freedom, the rise of the middle class, and a protestant work ethic. Bostonians from the 18th century to the present have turned this affinity into a passion for collecting Dutch painting. Landscapes that capture the subtleties of southern light, cityscapes and church interiors, seascapes, portraits, genre scenes, and still lifes are among the humble, precious, everyday subjects that have appealed to them. This book traces the history of Boston's remarkable collection of Dutch painting, including little-known works by Rembrandt, Balthasar van der Ast, Jan van der Heyden, and Jacob van Ruisdael, bringing together works from private collections usually seen only in their owner's homes.

The Poetry Of Everyday Life: Dutch Painting In Boston by 17th Century Dutch and Felmish art specialist Ronni Baer (Mrs. Russell W. Baker Senior Curator of Painting in the Art of Europe at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston) was produced to accompany the exhibition currently on view at the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, Massachusetts showcasing and celebrating the longstanding relationship between the Boston gentry and the 17th Century Dutch masters. The Dutch painting style of the times was visually both physical and moral -- traits that had a strong appeal for the early Bostonian upper classes and reflects a surprising collection of works that have rarely, if ever, been seen by the general public. Collectors have lent their prized paintings to the exhibition and made them available for reproduction and expert commentary in The Poetry Of Everyday Life. Here are masterworks by Rembrandt, van der Heyden, van Ruisdael, and many others making The Poetry Of Everyday Life an invaluable addition to any personal Art History collection. Highly recommended for school and community libraries, The Poetry Of Everyday Life is also available in a hardcover edition (0878466312, $40.00).

    Book Description

French director, poet, novelist, dramatist, and illustrator Jean Cocteau is known for being one of the most versatile and diversely talented artists of the twentieth century. Testament of Orpheus is a photographic journal and tribute to Cocteau's final film of the same name. Lucien Clergue was a close friend of Cocteau's and a photographer on the set of the film. He captures the essential scenes and symbols from the movie and provides a moving portrait of the poet as well as an intriguing elaboration on Cocteau's cinema as well as on surrealism and the Myth of Orpheus.

What a brilliant concept: a collection of new superheros created by cutting-edge alternative comic artists. The results are spectacular: we're treated to such brilliant weirdness as "TITANIUS" by Tony Consiglio, a giant metal-clad man who is shopping for a disguise at the King of Suede men's shop; "A-OK COOL," by Project: Superior assistant co-editor Dean Haspiel; Jeffrey Brown's, "Aw Sh*t, It's CYCLOCTOPUS!", and Rugg/Maruca's utterly demented "Shock-A-Con". Fantastically original and funny, and beautifully designed and printed by AdHouse Books. A must for comics fans and a can't-lose for any fans of alt/indie lit, music, or art. Five stars, definitely!

                          Book Description

The central question posed in this book is: If there existed a superior being who possessed the supernatural qualities of omniscience, omnipotence, immortality, and incomprehensibility, how would he/she act differently from us? The mathematical theory of games is used to define each of these qualities, and different assumptions about the rules of play in several theological games that might be played between ordinary human beings and superior beings like God are posited. Implications of these definitions and assumptions are developed and used to explore such questions as: are God's superior powers compatible with human free will? Can they be reconciled with the problem of evil in the world? In what situation is God's existence "decidable" in gamelike relationships He migh have with us?

By endowing omniscience/omnipotence/immortality/incomprehensibility with unambiguous meanings, the author shows how game theory can help breathe life into questions that have been dismissed too quickly simply because they are metaphysical--outside the world of experience. Thereby he clarifies the structure of our thought about an ultimate reality, whether or not it is viewed as religious.

4 out of 5 stars A series of four reference books.......2002-04-14

This is a review for four books into one review, all published by Marcel and likely released by them as a theme package: two by author J.Kent Crawford - The Project Management Maturity Model, and The Strategic Project Office and two by Frank Toney - The Superior Project Manager and The Superior Project Organization. The information Amazon posts is not the same as the books in terms of copyright and number of pages. My books all show a 2002 publication. Marcel has a fifth one coming out on managing multiple projects.

I do not understand why they charge so much, perhaps because they feel the audience is so limited they have to. The publisher will sell these and the one on multiple projects as a package for a substantial discount. My review below will be positive, but I also found myself irked at not only the high cost, but the duplication of content. Substantial content of each author is duplicated in his companion book. It would have not been a challenge with both authors to have merged the two books into one, and then better justifying the high price. While these four books are an important part of my reference library on project management, my four star rating is because of the cost of each book aggravated by the duplication of content.

Crawford's books are ideal for organizations wanting to adopt a project management maturity model. Their proprietary model mirrors PMI's PMBOK in terms of structure, but adds three important and valuable "special interest components" of Project Office, Management Oversight, and Professional Development. So, for an organization wanting to map their organization's project management maturity to the PMBOK, this model is exceptional well covered in a manner that by just reading the added competencies required at each higher maturity level, you get a sense of the enormous undertaking to increase one maturity level at a time. The three special interest components round out the model because the PMBOK is mostly about individual project best practices/methodologies, whereas Crawford wanted to add organizational issues to include Project Offices. Thus, organization's looking for guidance on their Project Office or PMO would find his two books very useful. The Maturity Model book has large font, is a small book, and mostly duplicated in the other book, but is ideal if you want a dedicated focus on just the maturity model mapped to PMBOK. His Project Office book has outstanding content for the many organizational issues and challenges, but also includes much of the maturity model in the other book. The content of The Strategic Project Office is outstanding, and covers the issues that plaque organizations in developing an environment for project success. If you have a budget for only one of his two, get the Strategic Project Office book.

Toney books offer specific best practices, and again, the content is duplicated to an incredible degree - whole blocks of paragraphs totally duplicated. They are just best practices on the other side of the coin, one for the organization, the other for the project manager. The best practices are highlighted in black boxes, with good content to explain why it is a best practice - so it is not just a listing, but in effect takes you on a journey of many best practices, giving them context to each other. Competency wheels explained in the beginning are potentially very valuable for an organization; I wish there was a tool for this, or added as a CD to justify the incredible cost. If you have a limited budget, the Superior Project Organization is probably the better choice.

Of the two authors, I would say Crawford has more in-depth content, and the cost is half. But as a series of four volumes, if you can get your organization to pay for these, they do make for an outstanding library, and are synergistic in their message. If I were charged with the challenge of taking an organization from a matrix to a strong matrix or project organization, I would clearly invest in all four books. But for individual reading, the cost is a major limitation.

In sum, I would recommend only spending the high cost is if you are focused on maturity modeling, identifying best practices, and trying to move an organization to be a project organization. These books are not a typical read about traditional project management practices, so it is not close to a PM HOW TO book. The books could also be used to study for the PMP, as the PMBOK is very dry reading, and these books would add a real-world context to the PMBOK framework.

For those on a mission within their organization, Creating an Environment for Successful Projects is a must read. This book does a better job of explaining why organization's struggle, but lacks a maturity model to do an assessment.

                                          Book Description

In today's hypercompetitive global marketplace, accurate cost estimating is crucial to bottom-line results. Nowhere is this more evident than in the design and development of new products and services. Among managing engineers responsible for developing realistic cost estimates for new product designs, the number-one source of information and guidance has been the Cost Estimator's Reference Manual.

Comprehensive, authoritative, and practical, the Manual instructs readers in the full range of cost estimating techniques and procedures currently used in the fields of development, testing, manufacturing, production, construction, software, general services, government contracting, engineering services, scientific projects, and proposal preparation. The authors clearly explain how to go about gathering the data essential to preparing a realistic estimate of costs and guide the reader step by step through each procedure.

This new Second Edition incorporates a decade of progress in the methods, procedures, and strategies of cost estimating. All the material has been updated and five new chapters have been added to reflect the most recent information on such increasingly important topics as activity-based costing, software estimating, design-to-cost techniques, and cost implications of new concurrent engineering and systems engineering approaches to projects.

Indispensable to virtually anyone whose work requires accurate cost estimates, the Cost Estimator's Reference Manual will be especially valuable to engineers, estimators, accountants, and contractors of products, projects, processes, and services to both government and industry.

The essential ready-reference for the techniques, methods, and procedures of cost estimating

COST ESTIMATOR'S REFERENCE MANUAL Second Edition

Indispensable for anyone who depends on accurate cost estimates for engineering projects, the Cost Estimator's Reference Manual guides the user through both the basic and more sophisticated aspects of the estimating process. Authoritative and comprehensive, the Manual seamlessly integrates the many functions—accounting, financial, statistical, and management—of modern cost estimating practice. Its broad coverage includes estimating procedures applied to such areas as:

This updated and expanded Second Edition incorporates all the most important recent developments in cost estimating, such as activity-based costing, software estimating, design-to-cost techniques, computer-aided estimating tools, concurrent engineering, and life cycle costing.

For engineers, estimators, accountants, planners, and others who are involved in the cost aspects of projects, the Cost Estimator's Reference Manual is an invaluable information source that will pay for itself many times over.

4 out of 5 stars many practical details for estimating.......2006-08-11

The book is now 11 years old, but scarcely outdated. The authors write for an engineering manager, who has to estimate the myriad costs in a project. The fundamentals are still unchanged, needless to say. The first chapter gives a recap of these fundamentals. Including estimating labour and materials. And then being able to factor in an overhead for administrative costs.

The book also tackles the tricky issue of indirect costs, and how to allocate these to a flow of jobs. There is also a chapter on simple statistical analysis. Describing parametric tests and various predictive methods like regression analysis. If you find that you need this material, consider later getting a text devoted to it. There's a lot more in the subject than covered here.

A later chapter covers the estimates involved in running a software project. Again, there are more detailed texts devoted to this important topic. But the book gives a good overview. Including dealing with a life cycle for maintaining code.

The one other reviewer missed the point that prices are per foot! Multiply by 30 and he'd be in the ballpark.

This is an excellent source book for remodelers looking to establish a reasonable price for a job. You'll still have to do some hand tweaking to cover a few odds and ends, but in general it's all here. Gives cost + and - percentages for major cities in all states. Updated annually.

The book and software indicated to me that I can build a 30 foot long 2x6 wall at 8' high for $54.00. If anyone uses this book as their only estimating tool, email me so you can build me a house for next to nothing.

                                              Book Description

In Vinyl Leaves Professor Fjellman analyzes each ride and theater show of Walt Disney World and discusses the history, political economy, technical infrastructure, and urban planning of the area as well as its relationship with Metropolitan Orlando and the state of Florida. With brilliant technological legerdemain, Disney puts visitors into cinematically structured stories in which pieces of American and world culture become ideological tokens in arguments in favor of commodification and techno-corporate control. Culture is construed as spirit, colonialism and entrepreneurial violence as exotic zaniness, and the Other as child.

                                              1 out of 5 stars I think someone needs a hug........2006-08-30

This book is complete rubbish. It is a scathing indictment of our university system and an argument against tenor. If my son or daughter came home spewing this tripe I would pull them immediately.

I surmise that maybe his [author] darkest day was in 1989 when the Berlin Wall fell. In fact, the only praise I remember in the book was for the Chinese over some clever anti-Western words they used in their showcase film. I think he pines for "agrarian reformers" like Che (wink...wink).

The author is adamantly opposed to optimism (of any kind) and his main criticism of Disney comes from their inability to show history at its worst moments. I think he would be unsatisfied with a dark ride reliving the grimmest moments of US history.

My favorite trick of his is when he uses quotations around words like "free market". I think this is code to demonstrate to his smug friends his disdain for free enterprise and industry. He almost writes/types the words "nuclear family" angrily!

It is sad. He is sad.

Finally, you should never trust someone who writes about pop culture who places an AT-AT on Endor.

2 out of 5 stars Nostalgic Descriptions of Early WDW, but lightweight 'scholarship'.......2005-09-13

Dr Fjellman probably spends at least 3/4 of his space describing attractions and environs at Walt Disney World, and less than 10% of his space offering any real scholarly analysis of the sociological impacts of WDW. It's hardly worth the price for the few pages of critique he offers, but if one is looking for a quasi-professorial description of WDW as it was 15 years ago - and especially of the first incarnation of EPCOT Center, this might be entertaining... or you could just read one of the early editions of "Steve Birnbaum Brings You the Best of Walt Disney World" - one of Fjellman's primary sources. Where I went to college, travel guides were hardly considered valid reference material! For a better study of Walt Disney's influence on American culture, spend your time and money on "The Magic Kingdom: Walt Disney and the American Way of Life" by Steven Watts; "Married to the Mouse" by Richard Folgesong about the relationship of Walt Disney and Company with Orlando, FL, is also an interesting read.

1 out of 5 stars A Mickey Mouse Book About Walt Disney World.......2004-07-07

I'm surprised to read that the "scholarly" Fjellman doesn't perpetuate the old chestnut about Walt being cryogenically frozen. As it is, he has his readers believing this ridiculous story about Walt making a series of films to be shown after his death to guide the company after he's gone.

This is a respected author? My God, where are his sources? Hopefully if he comes out with a second edition, he'll correct such glaring errors as these.

5 out of 5 stars Still THE scholarly standard..........2002-05-02

I keep hoping that Fjellman will update his seminal book to encompass all that has happened in the last ten years; I'll be the first in line when he does. I wrote my MA thesis at NYU on Disney using Fjellman as a prime source, and have used various chapters from Fjellman's book to teach graduate classes in museum studies, design, and architecture. Students in many fields find a lot to think about, discuss, debate, and apply to their thinking.

Witty, engaging, balanced, factually accurate, yet still with a point of view... a great book all around. Other reviewers who complain about the writing level, or some of the more obscure academic theorizing, are missing the point. For a truly academic piece of literature, it is written in incredibly accessible, engaging, and clear style. Highly recommended.

4 out of 5 stars Great imagineer and business model info.......2002-03-25

This is not a tell all/behind-the-scenes gossip book. It reads like a business venture case file with some interesting bits of Disney design and innovation thrown in. The author gives equal wonderment to the imagineers' genius as to the company's business decisions.

Also, this book was the catalyst for a to take a side trip to Celebration, Florida after our last Disney vacation in Dec 2001. The book peaked our curiosity to see Walt's real/intended version for a prototype community of the future.

                                                  Book Description

Written in the early 1980s, The Future of Grain examines Canada's growing grain exports and the outlook for the industry's future.

The authors examine the prospects such an increase holds for the largely static Canadian industries connected to grain: manufacturers of agricultural machinery, pesticides and fertilizers; processing industries such as feed and flour milling, canola crushing and barley malting. And they suggest improvements to every aspect of government involvement--from measures to conserve Prairie soil to macroeconomic policy--that affects this important sector.

The Future of Grain offers a valuable analysis of this important agricultural sector at a vital time in its history.

                                                    Book Description

This book is a descriptive analysis of current influences in the world oil trade. It is concerned with a central unchanged paradox of the industry--its preoccupation with maximizing the production of high-cost rather than low-cost oil. It follows the rise and decline of OPEC monopoly power in the crude market, shows how growth in the international oil business has almost ceased since the late seventies, and explores the reasons behind this slowdown. The author has had twenty-five years of practical consultancy in petroleum economics.

Hartshorn takes one of the most complex subjects on the face of the earth and dispatches with grace and insight. Oil Trade covers a gamut of issues from oil exploration to investment to consumption, but two matters stand out by virtue of their originality and their vast implications. First, Hartshorn argues that the Seven Sisters and the Texas Railroad Commission administered prices much better than do the OPEC states. You didn't see Exxon and Mobil hurling abuses across a conference table when they ran the show; all intent on making money, they succeeded quietly and effectively in carving up the market. But OPEC states, as sovereign and political entities, could not do this (think of Iraq and Kuwait). Failing to cooperate, OPEC lost control of the market. Hartshorn's argument suggests that in the long term the consumer gains from OPEC's nationalization of its oil industries in the 1970s-certainly not the way it appeared then. Second, he emphasizes the "central paradox" of the oil business: consumers are racing through the high-cost oil (in places like the United States) and avoiding the low-cost oil (in the Persian Gulf). Implicitly, everyone who invests in producing energy outside the Persian Gulf gambles that the Saudis, Kuwaitis, and others will continue not to flood the market with huge amounts of inexpensive oil. If they did, their oil would drive everyone else's out. Hartshorn sees this situation rendering prices inherently precarious, but thinks the gamble a good one for the Saudis et al. have little incentive to overturn the apple cart.
