Customer Reviews:
Not what it claims to be........2005-10-09
Despite the title, this book is not a manual of techniques for casting bronze. It does provide a some good information about sculpting a model and preparing it for casting, though. If that's what you are interested in, then this book is worth reading. However, it provides very little information on the casting process itself. As the earlier reviewer said, it doesn't go much beyond "take it to a foundry".
It's a good book with a bad title........1999-11-07
I bought Guy Thomas' "Bronze Casting: A manual of techniques" with the idea that I would learn from it how to cast bronze. I was sorely mistaken. This is a book not about casting bronze, but preparing to cast bronze. It covers all the preparatory steps quite adequately, and I won't deny that I learned a lot about modeling, making molds in various materials, and suchlike. But when it came to the part I really wanted to learn about, i.e. how to cast bronze, it says: "Take it to a foundry." It does give a bare sketch of what they do at the foundry, but certainly not enough that I could learn what I wanted to know. I'm not sure what an appropriate title would be, but bronze casting involves firing up a furnace, pre-heating ingots, dropping them into a crucible, then removing the molten metal and pouring it into a mold. It's about fuels, furnaces, temperatures, crucibles, gas welding and sand-blasters. I was sorely disappointed, many dollars poorer, no more knowledgable, and still kicking myself for buying a book by its title.

Excellent.......1997-10-16
This book is an excellent example of documentary photography of a people and way of life that is slowly (or quickly depending on where you live) passing from the American landscape. Builder Levy has a strong empathy for his subject and for the people he portrays in these marvelous b&w photographs. Buy and read this book (and share it with friends) if you have any interest at all in coal people and Appalachia.

Book Description
Individuals and businesses face large numbers of decisions where it is reasonably feasible to quantify key costs and benefits of a project. This invaluable book enables the decision-maker to make sensible choices when elements of time and risk are present. While other measures can help describe the outcomes, Bierman and Smidt's book focuses on the theme of net present value (NPV), of how it is the most reliable single measure of value, and of how it is important for the users of these tools to understand their limitations. This book was a classic text and ran to eight editions as a Macmillan text before being taken on by Prentice Hall. By this time it had become unwieldy and had split into an introductory and advanced volume. As Prentice Hall released the rights in the introductory volume, the authors propose that this new book (or 9th edition tbc) should return to its roots as a clear and concise introduction to this complex but essential topic in corporate finance. A new theme of this edition is adjusting for uncertainty and a wholly new chapter exploring the use of Real Options has been added.

This is the best book on capital budgeting ever written........1998-11-15
Bierman and Smidt's work is generally considered to be a classic in its field. Anyone seriously interested in a cogent, well structured, and logically developed textbook on the economic analysis of investment projects MUST study Bierman and Smidt. This book is not "just another finance text" because capital budgeting straddles two disciplines: finance and operations. This book does justice to both fields remarkably well.

Book Description
God's Plagiarist is an entertaining account of the abbe Jacques-Paul Migne, one of the great entrepreneurs of the nineteenth century. A priest in Orleans from 1824 to 1833, Migne then moved to Paris, where, in the space of a decade, he built one of the most extensive publishing ventures of all time.
How did he do it?
Migne harnessed a deep well of personal energy and a will of iron to the latest innovations in print technology, advertising, and merchandising. His assembly-line production and innovative marketing of the massive editions of the Church Fathers placed him at the forefront of France's new commerce. Characterized by the police as one of the great "schemers" of the century, this priest-entrepreneur put the most questionable of business practices in the service of his devotion to Catholicism.
Part detective novel, part morality tale, Bloch's narrative not only will interest scholars of nineteenth-century French intellectual history but will appeal also to general readers interested in the history of publishing or just a good historical yarn.
"An unforgettable, Daumier-like portrait, sharp and satirical, of this enterprising, austere and somewhat crazed merchandiser of sacred learning. . . . Bloch deserves great credit for the wit and style of his effort to explore the Pedantic Park of nineteenth-century learning, that island of monsters which scholars have found, as yet, no escape."—Anthony Grafton, New Republic
"Bloch is an exhilarating guide to the methods which made Migne the Napoleon of the Prospectus, a publicist of genius, Buffalo Bill and P.T. Barnum rolled into one."—David Coward, Times Literary Supplement
"Mercifully, Bloch's sense of humour has none of that condescending mock-bewilderment commonly applied to the foreign or ancient. . . . It enables Bloch to promote Migne as a forerunner of the department store and to place him on a continuum running from St. Paul to the Tupperware party: the quality of the merchandise is increasingly irrelevant, still more the nature of its contents."—Graham Robb, London Review of Books
Customer Reviews:
Mean Migne.......2007-01-09
I approached God's Plagiarist with the expectation of some naughty fun: the sort of schoolboy pleasure of learning what the teachers are really up to during lunchtime. I came away deeply disappointed. Bloch's Migne is a black and white stick figure (actually, just black) on a barely pencil-sketched background. Yes, Migne was avaricious; yes, Migne was self-promoting; yes, Migne played fast with copyrights. The flat and repetitive narrative never gets beyond this superficial chapter of faults. There must be more to know about Migne and the supporting cast, people, for example, like Cardinal Pitra. We learn nothing really about the ecclesiastical background of 19th France although it was a very interesting time to be a Catholic. Bloch seems actually to know little (or to care little)about the Catholic matrix of his story and his hasty dismissal of Migne's spiritual life hints at some biases. In the end I am puzzled why Bloch took the time to write the book at all. What was his motive? The expose in itself is so obvious as hardly to warrant 152 pages. Was it time for a tenure review? Yes, Migne was a plagiarizing, self-promoting, avaricious, workaholic little cleric. But the hundreds of volumes of his Patrologia series can still be found in any decent library in the western world and no one who has ever studied early Christianity can do without them. Those last two facts, which say something about enduring value, are true of Migne; they will not be true of Bloch's shallow and mean spirited little book.
The Unknown History behind your Patrologia Graeca!.......2002-12-24
I came upon this book a few weeks ago and really enjoyed it. As an armchair reader of Patristic texts I often use some of Minge's works. I was delighted by the story behind the publishing of these and so many other books in such a short amount of time. Using rather questionable business practices, Minge put out both the Patrologia Latina and the Patrologia Graeca (almost 400 vols). Moreover, he published ten newspapers and over 1000 volumes in just 30 years.
I am not sure that the end justifies the means, but Minge's odd and entertaining saga is a good tale, esp is you are interestind in patristics.
You may also find A Tactful God interesting if you have an interest in liturgical studies. It is the story of Gregory Dom Dix, the litrugical scholar who published the massive Shape of the LIturgy. Enjoy!

Book Description
The nineteenth-century city was characterised by the development of a wide variety of voluntary associations and institutions which set out to address social problems and promote the public good. This book presents a study of voluntarism in the city of Bristol. Attention is focused first on the long-established endowed charities which funded poor relief, almshouses and schools; the author charts the decline of this form of giving in favour of the new benevolent associations of the eighteenth century, reflecting the centrality of the debate over the control of civic charities during the era of municipal reform. The book moves on to look in more depth at the city's many voluntary organisations and societies, presenting a comprehensive picture of developments up to 1870 in such fields as health, education and missionary work to the poor. This is followed by an analysis of the social impact of voluntary activity, and a survey of the limitations of voluntary sector welfare provision.MARTIN GORSKY is Lecturer in History at the University of Wolverhampton.

Book Description
Comparative information detailing the cultural, legal and historical environments of foundations in international settings has been scarce - until now. Written by scholars from six countries, this text covers philanthropic foundations in the world's busiest commercial centers - the U.S. and Eastern and Western Europe. It reports on the structures and mindsets that shape foundations' gift giving, and discusses different aspects of foundation management. Case studies of the French and Italian foundation communities and a comparative legal chapter are especially notable.

Book Description
This book examines pressures for convergence and divergence in contemporary European societies, focusing on the rapidly changing relationship between work and welfare. The book provides an in-depth comparative analysis of four countries--Germany, Spain, Sweden and the UK--each representative of different labor market and welfare regimes. An important feature of the book is the integration of material from sociological perspectives on employment and work with comparative analyses of welfare regimes, feminist critiques and recent debates on social exclusion.

Book Description
Today it is impossible to separate discussion of poverty from the priorities of state welfare. A hundred years ago most working-class households avoided or coped with poverty without recourse to the state. The Poor Law after 1834 offered little more than a safety net for the poorest, and much welfare was organized through charitable societies, self-help institutions and mutual-aid networks. Rather than look for the origins of modern provision, the author of this book casts a searching light on the practices, ideology and outcomes of nineteenth-century welfare. This original and stimulating study, based upon a wealth of scholarship, is essential reading for all who are interested in the history of British society.
