Book Description
This book stands in opposition to the popular notion that the best architecture is built on compromise. Rather, Neil Spiller argues, the most original and brave products of the architectural mind are often to be found in those projects which, for whatever reason, never came to fruition.
Lost Architectures presents an array of such projects from the last decades of the twentieth century, consituting the unrealised dreams of some of the most inspirational architects working in the period. Most of the projects featured here have seldom, if ever, been published before, and some represent the last hand-drawn work of their creators before the age of the computer finally came into full force. Whilst they do not follow any specific style, these projects embody a spirit defined by Spiller as New Romanticism - a spirit which combines elements of aesthetic decadence and a certain camp mannerism with a love of angularity and mechanised ritual.
Some of the architects in question are still in practice, with a great deal of high-profile built work behind them; others have never been recognised as they perhaps should have been. In both cases, this book is an invaluable resource of information and inspiration for students of architecture, as well as for theorists, historians and lay readers. It provides essential exposure for a range of work of great vitality which might otherwise risk being lost in the course of time.
Customer Reviews:
Inspirational and Invaluable, great for students.......2006-11-27
I found this book to be entirely contrary to the review which precedes mine, one stating that this book has little substance. The book is an overview of architectural ideas, or dare I say "styles." Not all the drawings in it aim to clearly depict buildings, but instead are ideas about how we approach problem solving and crafting representations in architecture. It is for this reason that I believe this book is a must have for any student of architecture. The works in this book productively expand the boundaries of where one finds architectural inspiration, and the logic for making such architectural moves is clearly supported in the writings (and open for discussion.)
Certainly this book appeals to those concerned with keeping alive the romantic and seductive qualities of architecture. However, even the most pragmatic designers should be able to uncover significant value from turning these pages. One might not like every project in the book (I'm not sure I "like" them all), however it is nice to gain a modest understanding of the many perspectives present here.
This book is outstanding, unique, and invaluable... I'm glad I found it.
P.S. I will agree that the book is graphically excellent (search inside)
Not much of substance, a lot of fluff.......2006-01-13
It seems like those, who do not know, how the structure works, how to distribute the bldg program functionally, and how to merge both of them efficiently, have their book too, but graphically excellent on beautiful paper using very good printing technology and dyes.
PS. Not good even for students, who want to learn substance, but only for those, who do not.

Programming the Universe: A Quantum Computer Scientist Takes on the Cosmos
ASIN: 1884692079
Release Date: 2003-05-02 |
Book Description
The inspiration for this book can be found in the question posed in its subtitle. Aiming to define a new way of grasping the concept of reality, EXTRa plays with the idea that it is never really grasped. In a new realm of gliding over, through and between the surfaces of reality, art takes on diverse forms to reveal the extreme elasticity of the real. Twentyeight artists have come together to graft their layers onto reality pending its collapse such as Olaf Breuning, Wim Delvoye, Fischli & Weiss, Sylvie Fleury, Gelatin, Lori Hersberger, Christian Jankowski, Ugo Rondinone with John Giorno and Urs Fischer, Jim Shaw, Olav Westphalen and Erwin Wurm. Each artist has contributed an eight to ten page original visual essay. Collaborating in this drive to expose the depth and complexity of reality are critics, curators and physicists. David Deutsch and Seth Lloyd, quantum physicists, deliver a passionate round of "brain tennis" in their correspondence regarding the concept of multiple universes. The ephemeral texts of Martin Tupper appear throughout as nonsensical transmissions from another reality. Art critic Bob Nickas, along with several of the artists, round out and complete this multilayered collaboration.

Book Description
Throughout the 1980s and 90s, visionary Geneva gallerist Pierre Huber seems to have had a crystal ball for what's destined to last in contemporary art. And when he's gazed into it in amassing his private collection, he's seen photography, contemporary Chinese art, abstract painting, and other art forms. This catalogue, published on the occasion of an exhibition at the Musae cantonal des Beaux-Arts, Lausanne, gives others a glimpse of what Huber was seeing at the moment of inspiration: In America he found particular interest in appropriation art (Sherrie Levine, Cindy Sherman, Louise Lawler) and the wild California scene (Mike Kelley, Paul McCarthy, Jim Shaw); closer to home, he acquired work by some of the most innovative German photographers (Thomas Ruff, Candida H fer, Thomas Struth) and Swiss artists (Sylvie Fleury, Ugo Rondinone, Olaf Breuning). Abstract painting and contemporary Chinese art also make appearances in this impressive overview.

Book Description
Damien Hirst's Alone Yet Together, a pseudoscientific installation of fish suspended in formaldehyde in small, identical glass boxes, graces the cover of this volume. As the singular image selected to represent the Pisces Collection, it demands some exploration of wordplay. Pisces is, after all, the zoological term for fish and also the name of a zodiac sign--the astrological sign, as it happens, of the collection's anonymous owner. Devoted to contemporary art from the 1980s onward, the Pisces Collection takes not an encyclopedic approach but a focused one, concentrating on representing the work of a relatively small group of artists in depth. For the first time, 150 pieces from this very valuable collection are presented to the international public, featuring work by John M. Armleder, Ross Bleckner, George Condo, Wim Delvoye, Fischli & Weiss, Sylvie Fleury, Andreas Gursky, Damien Hirst, Jeff Koons, Paul McCarthy, Mariko Mori, Jack Pierson, Richard Prince, Ugo Rondinone, Thomas Ruff, David Salle, Cindy Sherman, Thomas Struth, Rosemarie Trockel, Franz West, and Christopher Wool. Highlights from the 80s include Prince's My Name and Koons's Encased Five Rows; the 90s are represented through photographic works by Sherman and Gursky, alongside Struths's Paradise 2 (Pilgrim Sands). Hirst's Something solid beneath the surface of several creatures great and small, with its use of live and dead animals, is one of the collection's more controversial pieces.

Book Description
Description: "Fashion girl" Sylvie Fleury's work looks like a confirmation of the values of a consumer society, but it is much more of a bang for your buck than that. Subtly commenting on appearance for appearance's sake, she appropriates logos from fashion houses, perfume stores, and glossy magazines and uses them to identify the human passions and desires connected to them. In her attempt to come to terms with the fetishistic attachment to material goods that is the defining feature of the world of fashion, Fleury has recently turned to magic light phenomena, colorful rooms, flossy surfaces, magic auras, pendulums, and crystals. 49000, with a layout by the Swiss artist herself, presents work from the last two years along with classics from the 90s.

Book Description
This anthology gives glamour an extreme makeover. To talk about glamour is to wrestle with one of the central aesthetic paradigms of our society as the political economy of capital achieves a space for performances of the self. Glamour is not a stable trans-historical phenomenon, but a manifold and specific cultural practice. From the urbane Glanz ("gloss") of the Weimar period to glam rock, from the glamour appropriations of Jack Smith and Andy Warhol to glamour appropriated for feminist or queer identity politics, there is no linear path of development, but rather multiple ramifications and contradictions. Compiled in association with an exhibition at the Migros Museum in Zurich, which included Leigh Bowery, Mick Rock, Francesco Scavullo, James Lee Byars, Tom Burr, T.J. Wilcox, Sylvie Fleury, and others, this book features essays by curators Tom Holert and Heike Munder, and some 120 color images.

It seems some guru with a PalmPilot reminds us daily of the current breach between our Old and New economies, with immense riches awaiting those who play by the rules of the New, and certain oblivion looming for those who disdain such tidings. Come to think of it, that's essentially what Cracking the Value Code says. At the heart of this rigorously researched, cogently argued, and sensibly organized manifesto is this: New Economy success stories like Charles Schwab, Microsoft, and the Gap have outstripped their older industrial-age counterparts because they have devised new business models that hook into "what matters" to customers. How? By using their organizational assets--both concrete and intangible--as the building blocks to true customer value. The book examines the full gamut of these possible assets (physical, financial, employee-supplier, customer, and those intrinsic to the organization) and, to show them in action, provides plenty of fun, fact- and figure-filled miniprofiles of New Economy dynamos, from robustly reengineered old warhorses like IBM, Coke, Pepsi and Sara Lee to brash, new digital-age brats: Dell, Compaq, Cisco, idealab!, and Starbucks.
The book, which is based on a three-year study by the consulting firm Arthur Andersen, gives clear, plain-English guidance for helping your organization identify, create, and consolidate the valued assets it needs to vault high above the competition. Each chapter ends with questions and actions you can directly apply to your own workplace, and an entire section is devoted to helping your company add value by stressing assets and build a new business model that reflects those central strengths. So if you want the smart tip from one of the world's most influential consultants on exactly what companies are doing or have done to put themselves on the international market radar, you'll eat this book up. And if you're looking to reposition your biz for unprecedented market success by cracking your own value code, you might even come back for seconds and thirds. --Timothy Murphy

What to do differently and how to do it is the focus of this book. The authors' mission is to help you see, invest in, manage, and measure all of what matters in the New Economy.

Lacks Depth.......2003-01-14
Summary:
Arthur Andersen's Value Dynamics framework, published in the book Cracking the Value Code: How Successful Businesses Are Creating Wealth in the New Economy, differentiates the firm from other consultants who continue to use methods that focus only on tangible assets. The "Value Dynamics Framework" provides a context for viewing the ways that organizations create value by combining and recombining different types of assets. This book is about what creates value for businesses and the customers they serve. The core of this book is about the expansion of the meaning of traditional sources of wealth --- land (physical assets), labor (employee and supplier assets), and capital (financial assets) --- and the addition of customer and organizational assets. The main theme that the authors are trying to get across is that while conventional accounting practices only encompass tangible assets in the balance sheet, it is important to recognize and leverage on the intangible assets that are largely ignored. The authors' reports are based on the results of consulting experience and studies from their position as partners with Arthur Andersen. The authors provide with some really interesting examples and case studies. For example how to quantify ability to assimilate new companies and new technologies (which Microsoft tends to do so well)? Or how to quantify customer and employee loyalty? One of the interesting concepts of this book is using the customer as an asset. This book uses the example of Charles Schwab and its amazing ability to attract and retain customers. It also delves into the critical element of replenishment cost. The authors draw analogy of the five assets of an organization to that of the DNA on the basis of four amino acids. The five assets namely Physical, Financial, Organizational, Labor and Customer are the main key areas where the author wants to generate value. This book highlights the need to acknowledge intangible assets such as leadership and creates a framework according to, which these intangibles can be assessed. While stimulating and thought provoking, this book unfortunately has some week points. While examples emphasize successful management of one or more assets and do a good job in showing how this might lead to the market success, it doesn't show that other companies failed by neglecting and trying to do the same thing. Another weak point stems from the intangible use of one of the themes - that the five assets discussed represent a kind of DNA code for business. It is never clarified how the processes used by DNA to reproduce itself or to evolve over the time are analogous in any way to the processes by which firms turns combinations of assets into profits. I think the analogy on the surface is ostentatious. In conclusion, the authors write in an enjoyable consultant style manner with many real world examples as its strength, spread over a wide array of topics like a sheet of frozen ice but lacks depth.
Albeit simple, a transparent marketing ploy.......2001-02-25
I read this book with great enthusiasm because I concur with the authors premise. Namely, to be successful in the future, companies must effectively, measure, report, and manage their intangible assets. However, while attempting to offer sage advice, the authors support their theory with a colorful series of pseudo-case studies that are, at best, dated information and, at worst, incomplete. For example, the authors position Priceline.com, Lucent Technologies, ... as examples of "thought and practice leaders" in the new economy. One only needs to look at their collective stockprices over the past year to see that these companies have not avoided powerful downward market realities. Even the oft cited darling of Wall Street, FDX Corporation, is included as a "technology leader" with their package tracking system serving as their "single greatest competitive advantage." This simply ignores the reality that United Parcel Service (UPS) their biggest competitor delivers and electonically tracks more parcels around the world in one day than FDX does in one week. What gives? In the end, the authors offer some "structure" for how to optimize your intangible assets...the kicker is that when you ask the question "How do I do it for my company?" you are left with a most unsatisfying "it depends." In effect, the folks at Andersen leave you with their business cards and suggest that you call them so they can figure it out for you.
Good job and buono fortuna with your work!.......2000-08-24
Well done. I recommend this book to anyone interested in the dynamics of enterprise value today. The book is seriously under valued (priced) for the IP it offers the reader. What a bargin?
It flows well and offers insight into the thinking of valuation beyond a formula approach, plug-it-in software programs and hobbiest appraisers. AA&Co. hits a home run with the publication of this work.
Great Idea -- poor execution.......2000-07-18
This book is not for someone who wants to understand what it takes to understand and implement an eCommerce business plan or channel. The book is filled with bland examples, limited detail, and few conclusions. If you are looking to actually crack the value code and make the tough decisions necessary to compete in the digital economy. This one is not it. Save your money and save your time.
Sorry to be so harsh, but the book doesn't live up to the repuation of a big company like AA !
Oversimplified.......2000-07-05
The core concept the authors are trying to drive home is that while conventional accounting practices list only the tangible assets in the balance sheet, it is important to recognize and leverage on the intangible assets that are largely ignored.Data collected from over 10000 companies, empirical evidence shows the progressive decrease in the ratio of book value to market value of companies. It is also shown that for companies that created most of the wealth in a very short span, this ratio is the lowest; as low as 0.03 in some. This is attributed to the recognition of intangible assets of the new economy companies that are not reported in the balance sheet but recognized by the stock market.
It is then argued that in order to add value and create wealth , companies need to adopt a strategy to optimize the use of all their assets - Physical, Financial, Organizational, Customer and Employee & Customer assets. The book defines each of these assets and a small case study is presented as to how a particular company succeeded in creating value using each of these assets. An analogy is drawn to the understanding of DNA on the basis of four amino acids. These five assets seem to be those with which the authors want to crack the code of creating value and wealth and these assets are the "business genome". The framework that evolves is termed as "Value Dynamics".
I was keenly looking forward for a methodology that would enable a quantitative analysis. Maybe I can find it in the next edition!
The use of Information Technology to measure and report what needs to be measured appears as a summary in the last chapter.
Albert Einstein as quoted in this book had rightly said "Sometimes what counts can't be counted and what can be counted doesn't count".

Finally something different.......2007-08-03
I am sitting here looking at 7 different travel books of Paris that I received as gifts prior to my trip to Paris. Now this was my 2nd trip; the first one was in 1966 and I was in high school so I don't think it really counts. I felt like I was starting over and I really didn't know where to start. While some of the guide books were helpful, I really wanted to get a few very special momentos of the trip - especially scarves - so I was just thrilled when I happened upon Maribeth's book at Shakespeare and Co. when we were already there. I devoured the book that night and from it easily found several wonderful shops that I never would have seen were it not for her shop. I look forward to using it to an even greater degree as I plan a trip back next year.
Your Paris Shopping Map-Don't Leave Home Without It!.......2003-02-13
Most of the Paris guides available give plenty of information on using the Paris Metro, the museums, and taking a taxi. However, what they lack is information on the very things that make a visit to Paris memorable and personal. Maribeth Clemente's "The Riches of Paris" provides key information on a wide variety of shopping interests. Are you into antique books?-the book has it....Are you into food stores, children's boutiques, or flowers? - the book has it. How about the best place to get a couture scarf, a pen, a cigar? - Again, the book has it. What I especially found useful was my ability to plan my shopping excursions before I got onto the plane...when I arrived I was able to fit in both the best sightseeing and museums AND the shops I knew would be of interest to me. My time was efficiently planned and I was able to fit many more memorable experiences into my trip. Ms. Clemente's index is especially useful in personalizing your trip...seperating shops by like categories, and presenting them in the book by area. This categorization takes the work out of planning a day....one day I planned to visit a particular area...I was set because of the book. Another day I decided to visit all children's toy stores...no problem again because of the book! A must have for getting the most out of your time!
The elegance and excitement that is only Paris..........2001-09-10
...is evident in every page. Even if I hadn't been planning another trip to the city of lights, I would have been on the next flight!
As shown in her other books, Maribeth Clemente has a wonderful way of not only giving you the information that you need, but getting you excited about your exploration with every word. She covers the "unique" of Paris with a fresh, honest perspective. I feel like I'm walking down a lovely boulevard with her as my guide. When I've checked the "reality" of other travel books, I've found a real mix--what I read was not always what I got. It seems like reviews were completed by multiple sources with multiple perspectives of what would entice. Maribeth Clemente's insight/personality is consistent, elegant, fun and unexpected. And yet...she always seems to leave a little bit to your own exploration. I trust her to route me to the best--especially if I don't have a lot of time. This book is also an improvement from prior releases in it's organization--making quicker, easier reference to the user "on the road". Thanks!
PARIS - A CITY OF ROMANCE, LIGHTS AND DELIGHTS!.......2001-07-06
One has not travelled until you have visited Paris. It is a city of wonder, history, romance, excitement and fashion. I studied for a short time in Paris many years ago and fell in love with the city. It also fell in love with my pocket book! The cafes, exquisite boutiques, and Epicurean cuisine will forever be a cherished memory; however, the first-time traveller to Paris should be forwarned; it can be a VERY EXPENSIVE city to enjoy, particularly if you do not know where you will get "the best value for your dollar." As this book clearly points out, most of the better hotels are luxurious and quite costly, as are the better known, finer restaurants. You definitely will not want to leave home without your trusty credit card! I purchased a Chanel Tee-shirt and for the same price, I could have purchased an entire rack of tee-shirts in my country. However, the joy of Paris is for many, a once-in-a-lifetime experience and one you will never regret no matter what the cost. The book is not complete; however, many of the special places of interest are not included in the book, which was rather disappointing. There are also some excellent more affordable restaurants and places to stay in Paris which are not listed here. The book was interesting and informative but did tend to patronize basically the higher-end, upscale facilities.
