4 out of 5 stars discussion of the problems of the figure/abstract art.......2006-09-26

For less than five dollars, you get more than a hundred dollars of discussion of various artists who work abstract /figure. Diebenkorn, Stanley Spencer,Bacon, krazy Kat,Kline,Marsden Hartley,Jasper JohnsHe suggests that the post Abstract Expressionist artists were wise in fusing the figure and abstraction . His discussion of Diebenkorn is important in this context as the Ocean Park series demonstrates his unity and yet saved from academicism by his painting technique. One of the only books to deal with this problem . It is too bad that he hasn't written more about his last chapter ,painters such as William Bailey, Philip Pearlstein. He brings up history painting but Leon Golub didn't seem to see that he was a history painter until close to the end of his career. So Golub was left out of the discussion. After reading Paulson I came to agree with him that Hartley's most important paintings were his figures. His last paintings. Chapter one is ok but his best insights are about the figure/abstract school.

      Book Description

For eight years London-based, award-winning photographer Amelia Troubridge has been shooting men who walk the line, from Bill Clinton to Fidel Castro to Hugh Hefner. Her photographs explore male fantasies-of cars, power, money, life on the wild side, crime, celebrity, war, and rock music. But they also go beneath the surface, revealing the fears, hopes, and fragility of the male character, and of the world that shapes it, in brilliantly observed background detail. For this book, Troubridge's photographs have been sequenced to tell a powerful story.

          Book Description

Alex Cukierman is well known for his work on central bank behavior. This book brings together a large body of Cukierman's research and integrates it with recent developments in the political economy of monetary policy. Filled with applications and carefully worked out technical detail, it provides a valuable comprehensive analysis of central bank decisions, of the various effects of policy on inflation, and of the feedback from inflationary expectations to policy choices.

Cukierman uncovers and analyzes the reasons for positive inflation and rates of monetary expansion. He shows that the money supply, and therefore inflation, are not exogenous. They are influenced by interactions involving distributional considerations, private information, personal motives, and the political environment. This point of view makes it possible to identify the institutional, political, and other features of a country that may be conducive to inflationary environments.

Cukierman presents new multidimensional evidence on both legal and actual central bank independence for a sample of up to 70 countries and uses it to investigate the interconnections between the distributions of inflation and of central bank independence. He takes up such issues as why some countries have more independent central banks than others and identifies reasons for the substantial cross country variation in seigniorage. He provides positive explanations for the tendency of central banks, like the US Federal Reserve, to smooth interest rates and to be secretive. Observing that it is likely that the European Economic Community will have a monetary union before the turn of the century, Cukierman applies the techniques of modern political economy to discuss the effect of this change on the commitment to price stability.

The book includes simple and advanced materials as well as informal summaries of the major technical results. The introduction contains a modular guide for reading and teaching the material.

Following the theory that is masked behind the walls of hyperinflation, this book proves to the reader that it can not only be penetrated but is illegitimate as well. I have had the pleasure of working with well known Dr. Igbus from Stanford who has foreshadowed the various topics found within the cover of this book. Its ideas and conjectures about the role of supply and demand on hyperinflation issues are controversial but do not lie outside of the bounds of being comprehended. Although the hypothesis made does not have supportable evidence to back it, that does not make it inplausible. Moreover, the pros far outweigh the cons making this book a credible source for the common economist.

          Book Description

Banking on Reform examines the political determinants of recent reforms to monetary policy institutions in the industrial democracies. With these reforms, political parties have sought to draw on the political credibility of an independent central bank to cope with electoral consequences of economic internalization and deindustrialization.
New Zealand and Italy made the initial efforts to grant their central banks independence. More recently, France, Spain, Britain, and Sweden have reformed their central banks' independence. Additionally, members of the European Union have implemented a single currency, with an independent European central bank to administer monetary policy.
Banking on Reform stresses the politics surrounding the choice of these institutions, specifically the motivations of political parties. Where intraparty conflicts have threatened the party's ability to hold office, politicians have adopted an independent central bank. Where political parties have been secluded from the political consequences of economic change, reform has been thwarted or delayed. The drive toward a single currency also reflects these political concerns. By delegating monetary policy to the European level, politicians in the member states removed a potentially divisive issue from the domestic political agenda, allowing parties to rebuild their support constructed on the basis of other issues. William T. Bernhard provides a variety of evidence to support his argument, such as in-depth case accounts of recent central bank reforms in Italy and Britain, the role of the German Bundesbank in the policy process, and the adoption of the single currency in Europe. Additionally, he utilizes quantitative and statistical tests to enhance his argument.
This book will appeal to political scientists, economists, and other social scientists interested in the political and institutional consequences of economic globalization.
William T. Bernhard is Assistant Professor of Political Science, University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign.

Professor Bernhard has written a lucid yet dense explanation of phenomenon that, while much commented on, remains unexplained: Central Bank Independence. Considering the relationship between legislators, parties and central bank independence, Bernhard inserts politics back into a topic where it was previously neglected.

A valuable contribution to political economy and comparative politics.

            Book Description

Capitalism, Not Globalism shows that, while much has been made of recent changes in the international economy, the mechanisms by which politicians control the economy have not changed throughout the postwar period. Challenging both traditional and revisionist globalization theorists, William Roberts Clark argues that increased financial integration has led to neither a widening nor a narrowing of partisan differences in macroeconomic polices or outcomes. Rather, he shows that the absence of partisan differences in macroeconomic policy is a long-standing feature of democratic capitalist societies that can be traced to politicians' attempts to use the economy to help them survive in office.
Changes in the structural landscape such as increased capital mobility and central bank independence do not necessarily diminish the ability of politicians to control the economy, but they do shape the strategies they use to do so. In a world of highly mobile capital, politicians manipulate monetary policy to create macroeconomic expansions prior to elections only if the exchange rate is flexible and the central bank is subservient. But they use fiscal policy to induce political business cycles when the exchange rate is fixed or the central bank is independent.
William Roberts Clark is Assistant Professor, Department of Politics, New York University.

              Description:
How does central bank conservatism affect labor market regulation? In this paper, we examine the economic forces at work. An increase in conservatism triggers two opposite effects. It reduces the inflation bias of discretionary monetary policy and hence the cost of regulation. It also increases unemployment variability, making regulation more costly. In combination, the two effects produce a hump-shaped relation between conservatism and labor market regulation. To test this prediction, we use data for 19 OECD countries for the period 1980-1994. Our proxies for regulation are unemployment, different labor market institutions, and indices of labor market regulation. Conservatism is proxied by two common measures of central bank independence. We find support for the prediction of a hump-shaped relation between conservatism and labor market regulation.

                  Description:
The literature argues that the benefits of an independent central bank accrue at no cost to the real side. In this paper, we argue that the lack of correlation between monetary autonomy and output variability is due to the proactive role of fiscal policy when faced with rigid monetary objectives. Few of the attempts to measure these correlations actually allow for a changing fiscal role. Yet, when an independent authority handles monetary policy, fiscal and wage/social protection policies remain instruments in the hands of elected governments. We find that, so long as the two authorities pursue their goals independently of each other, a conflict arises that becomes stronger as preferences diverge. We also find that the establishment of a conservative central bank encourages more divergent preferences among the public (as reflected in the government that is elected). The election of more interventionist governments then makes it harder for either authority to reach its own preferred objectives, unless cooperation is possible.

                      Book Description

As corporate capital appropriated the rich mines of the American West and proletarianized independent miners, workers resisted by forging a genuine, indigenous, and radical working-class culture based on reciprocity and solidarity, and rooted in earlier gold and silver rushes, in the perils of the mining experience, and in a producers' discourse of a moral economy. Despite systematic coercion, miners, and their families established powerful industrial unions and tight-knit working-class communities.

As early as the Civil War period, industrial unionists on the Comstock opened membership to all underground workers regardless of skill or wage levels--a radical departure from the conservative craft-based unions evolving elsewhere. In addition to the central struggle for hegemony between labor and capital, miners contested among themselves over the extension of dignity and material well-being to all workers. In the process, union miners and mining communities came to understand, sometimes painfully, the importance of recruiting and welcoming previously excluded groups. In time, vigorous networks of support and resistance evolved, giving miners, families, and communities a significant measure of control over their lives.

                        Book Description

As the debate over health care reform continues, costs have become a critical measure in the many plans and proposals to come before us. Knowing costs is important because it allows comparisons across such disparate health conditions as AIDS, Alzheimer's disease, heart disease, and cancer. This book presents the results of a major study estimating the large and largely overlooked costs of occupational injury and illness--costs as large as those for cancer and over four times the costs of AIDS.
The incidence and mortality of occupational injury and illness were assessed by reviewing data from national surveys and applied an attributable-risk-proportion method. Costs were assessed using the human capital method that decomposes costs into direct categories such as medical costs and insurance administration expenses, as well as indirect categories such as lost earnings and lost fringe benefits. The total is estimated to be $155 billion and is likely to be low as it does not include costs associated with pain and suffering or of home care provided by family members.
Invaluable as an aid in the analysis of policy issues, Costs of Occupational Injury and Illness will serve as a resource and reference for economists, policy analysts, public health researchers, insurance administrators, labor unions and labor lawyers, benefits managers, and environmental scientists, among others.
