Robert Maillart's Bridges

Book Description
The Swiss engineer Robert Maillart (1872-1940) built bridges and industrial buildings of startling originality. His innovative use of concrete, especially in the design of thin arch structures, and his introduction of a wide range of new engineering forms, make him a seminal figure in the history of modern engineering. Focusing on 14 of Maillart's major works, this book provides a stunning full-color visual presentation of engineering structures as works of art in their own right and as images for new possibilities in architecture.
Previous studies of Maillart - including the pioneering essays by Sigfried Gidieon and Max Bill - were based on black and white illustrations taken in the 1930s. For this German and English dual language book, Maillart's Swiss structures were rephotographed under the author's supervision. With the added dimension of color and looked at from the point of view of a wellknown structural engineer, they present Maillart in a totally new perspective.
Billington explains in detail how Maillart's ideas unfold from his first design, the 1901 Zuoz Bridge, to his last, the 1940 Lachen Bridge. He analyzes these works using engineering criteria and raises the provocative notion that structure is a fertile ground for new forms that remain to be realized in structural engineering and in architecture.
David P. Billington is Professor of Civil Engineering at Princeton University.
Customer Reviews:
the art of good engineering.......2003-09-03
Too many people (and too many engineers) fail to understand that great engineering is about creation and imagination. Robert Maillart was first and foremost a great engineer, but he was also a wonderful artist.
This book (in English and German) traces his works from 1905 to his death (about 1940). Billington shows how Maillart takes his designs, step by step, from the historical stone arch design to the modern use of reinforced concrete. His bridges are wonderfully designed to be functional as well as perfectly suited to their placement in the environment.
Because of their locations deep in the Swiss countryside, they tend to be difficult to view and photograph. But Billington includes excellent photographs (both historic and contemporary).
The best part about the book is the way Billington shows that the later works are built upon the concepts explored in the earlier works. There are some discussions of engineering concepts, but this is really a book about art and aesthetics, not about stress and strain. As Maillart proved, you can provide gorgeous aesthetics and still create structures that serve a useful purpose for 100 years (and still going strong).
I wish the chapter about his influence on later engineers had been more developed. I also wish there could have been more discussion of the economics involved, perhaps a detailed exploration of one of the design competitions. (Maillart had to not only build the bridges, but he also had to be the low-bidder!)

Book Description
This comprehensive biography traces the life and works of Robert Maillart, one of the most important engineers and designers of the twentieth century. His career developed around a central issue of modern technological society: the debate between two antithetical views of engineering opposing applied science, which relied on general mathematical theories for understanding structures against design, which Maillart championed. Maillart considered structures not merely works of utility but also as works of art. As utilitarian objects, he created a series of innovations of lasting significance. Aesthetically, Maillart shaped his three innovations in concrete to create surprising and often stunning new forms. Providing an analysis of these innovations, this biography also connects Maillart’s aesthetic ideas with the private and professional context in which he worked.

Customer Reviews:
The Work of a Structural Artist.......2000-05-22
To the layman, the name Robert Maillart probably means nothing. However, in the field of civil enigineering, the Swiss bridge designer is regarded as not only one of the most inovative and important structural artists of the twentieth century, but an engineer whose work was beautiful enough to be displayed in the Museum of Modern Art. This book analyzes what Maillart is most known for: his bridges. David Billington, as he did briefly in his other engineering guidebook, "The Tower and the Bridge," convincingly argues the superiority of Maillart's reinforced concrete bridges over the works of any other concrete bridge designer during the first half of the twentieth century due to the artist's careful balance of efficiency, economy, and elegance in all his designs. By managing to convey the significance of the great designer through clear illustrations of the many new forms and creative building techniques while at the same time carefully avoiding too much technical jargon, this is a wonderful book for those without much engineering background who wish to understand the methods and works of not just a civil engineer, but a great structural artist.

Book Description
These drawings from a private collection showcase the beauty and ingenuity of automobile design, focusing especially on presentation drawings used to showcase concepts, present fun design ideals, or act as selling tools. From preliminary sketches to carefully drafted full-color illustrations, many of these drawings have never before been published. Future Retro looks at cars from a landmark period in automobile design in America: the 1940s to 1960s, providing a rare glimpse into the thinking of premiere Detroit auto makers. The text by Bill Porter, formerly chief designer for General Motors, details such matters as the role of the designer in auto styling, the demands and expectations of the major manufacturers, and the ways in which airplanes, rockets, and emerging technologies influenced postwar car design. Over 40 color plates showcase the drawings themselves, introducing us to cars that are highly retro, sometimes decidely wacky (a number of them were too outlandish to build), and always very, very cool. Future Retro offers an ideal lesson in car design and history lessons to practitioners and students of graphic and industrial design...as well as to anyone who has ever succumbed to the lure of the great American automobile.
Customer Reviews:
A 'must' for car fans and students of Americana.......2005-10-10
The drawings comprising Future Retro: Selected From The Jean S. And Frederic A. Sharf Collection consider a fine era of American auto design: the 1940s through the 1960s, when the focus was on futuristic vehicles from Detroit. Over fifty color drawings - many seeing print here for the first time, so don't anticipate repeat performances - capture futuristic, retro and sometimes downright odd vehicles pack a presentation inspired by an exhibition currently on view at the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston. All the drawings are from the collection of Jean S. and Frederic A. Sharf, are presented in full-page color, and capture some of the ground-breaking dreams of auto design of the era. A 'must' for car fans and students of Americana.

Cruise-O-Matic, Automobile Advertising of the 1950's
ASIN: 188805462X |
Book Description
A century ago the motorcar was a cantankerous, frail device that was difficult for all but a few visionaries to perceive as practical. By 1920, that picture had changed dramatically, and the automobile was well on its way to becoming the dominant transportation device in this country. However, the evolution of practical automobiles is only part of the story. In order to take advantage of mass production there had to be mass markets, and that meant advertising. RETRO RIDE traces the evolution of the automobile and the simultaneous marketing messages that helped it flower across five decadesthe Roaring Twenties through the Go-Go Sixties. Beautifully illustrated with original advertisements, Retro Ride celebrates not only the beauty and diversity of the American automobile but also the heyday of American print advertising. It's a ride well worth the taking.
Customer Reviews:
Amazing!.......2005-08-26
Do you remember those magic colorful books with fairytales from your childhood? You have a decent chance to look inside one of them again. No, there is no Snow White in it, and there are no seven dwarfs (not even one). But the style of the book, its cosy, beautiful, (mostly) large-scale pictures recalls all the warmest feelings from your past. This book is not written, it is just compiled. There is only the foreword in it (not a bad one). So, you won't find many new facts here, but this book can charm you without any word. It is created to take you to those better days when the life was easier and the future was brighter, and that's a wonderful feeling!
Fluid drive art........2003-07-14
For years car ads must have been the ultimate goal for any slick photorealist style artist though I bet there was actually only a small number who could achieve the high standards required by Detroit. The five hundred ad paintings in this book are the pick of the crop. They run from 1923 thru 1965, from the mid-sixties photos were the dominant graphic in car ads.
As these ads were doing their best to put a positive spin on owning a particular make, paintings were the ideal medium to create desire and so much easier to exaggerate reality. A whole society of wee folk was created to spend their lives zooming about town or country, permanently smiling and always waving to somebody along the highway. According to these paintings, most cars would easily accommodate four people in the front. The 1948 Hudson ad (page eighty-five) shows a wee person enjoying `...a heaping portion of roominess and comfort...' sitting on a back seat that looks like it could easily hold six. By the mid-sixties photography had replaced illustrations but the exaggeration continued, have a look at `Boulevard Photographic' by Jim Williams, the story of Detroit's leading car photo studio.
I found it very interesting that these cars, very precisely painted, were usually placed in a setting that did not require the same amount of accuracy. The more popular makes were shown in everyday situations, pages ninety-four and ninety-five show three super street scenes with everybody looking at the latest model, naturally. Nearly all these ad paintings are anonymous but there are some by well-known artists, Austin Briggs painted the 1956 Chevrolet Bel Air and 1958 Chevrolet Impala, Stan Galli did the 1955 Bel Air and Bernie Fuchs the 1960 Cadillac Coupe De Ville. The ultimate in car art was the work of Art Fitzpatrick (car) and Van Kaufman (background) who created dozens of masterpieces for Pontiac in the fifties and sixties, the book has twenty-two of their ads. Have a look at their web site Fitz-art.
Though this is a lovely book of car ads, I was disappointed by the presentation. Collectors Press editorial style is to make each page of their books as busy as possible. All of the spreads in this one have colored backgrounds and (really annoying) many of the ads are angled and overlap each other, several of them are cropped badly too, so that some of the text is unreadable. It is as if the publishers didn't think the material was very interesting and the pages needed some strong graphic presentation to compensate. It does take the edge of a fine book in my view.

Reflects an undeniable nostalgia.......2002-09-06
Through the reproduction of more than five hundred historical print advertisements in their original form and color, Retro Ride traces the evolution of the automobile and the developing sophistication of the marketing messages that helped to popularize the automobile and forever alter American popular culture. Over a spectrum of five decades ranging from the "Roaring Twenties through the Go-Go Sixties, Retro Ride showcases original print advertizing that provided the consumer public with information and myth with that shaped their perspectives, attitudes and relationships to the automobile. A unique contribution to American popular culture histories, Retro Ride reflects an undeniable nostalgia for those of us who can vividly remember when such cars and such ads offered up automotive visions of affordable paradise and personal fulfillment.
Fast Ride Through a Long Century.......2002-08-31
Previous reviews have addressed the attractions this lovely volume has for car lovers. However, I found it a marvelous mirror of American society through the first 2/3rds of the 20th century. Family values, exploration and the desire for the good life characterized pre-depression advertising. Luxury and escapism dominated pre-WW II graphics. Technology and patriotism surfaced during the war. Family themes and safety emerged during the birth of the baby boomers as full station wagons and back seats filled with kids were portrayed. Increasing disposable income in the 50's prompted a return to the freedom of the road, travel and a new emphasis on performance. By the early sixties, couples in romantic situations had replaced families as cars were portrayed as an accessory to a "sexy" lifestyle. The question that remained was whether advertisers established these trends or took their cues from the mood of the country.
A Ride for your Eyes.......2002-08-03
This is a great coffee table book. Packed with great images that is kind of nice to see compared to vans that now come standard with entertainment centers.
Retro Ride is a fun marketing review. I enjoyed how much some of the ads have not changed over the years. A lot of reference to "getting away" and having more space and later, more power.
I keep the book out for the enjoyment of my family and friends on a daily basis. I can recommend this book if you're looking for a frivolous ride through our early marketing years of the automobile.

MCSE Help 70-297.......2006-11-10
I like the exam cram books I use these for any ms exam that I take and recommend it. It quick and easy to read not to much detail I like the summary sheet also.
Excellent Exam Prep.......2005-05-17
The previous reviewer doesn't seem to understand the concept of exam cram books. They're written specifically to give you an idea of what's covered on the exam. They shouldn't be compared to $60, 800-page books that go into great detail about every little nuance of the technology. Crams are $30 and overviews. Let's make sure we're comparing apples to apples here. If you want more depth, sure, go buy a $60 book, but don't unfairly criticize a book because it doesn't do what it never claims it's supposed to do in the first place.
Just OK.......2004-09-07
After reading both this book and the 70-297 Sybex book, there is no comparison. This book does not cover anything that you don't already know if you are on the MCSE track. It seemed to be more written for someone that is just taking this exam... and hasn't studied anything for the other 6 exams in the MCSE track. My advice, spend the extra $ and get the Sybex book by Brad Price... it will be money well spent, and you may actually learn something you don't already know... I know I did!

Book Description
FROM THE PREFACE "For businesses to develop successfully and grow requires leadership with a clear vision of the future. This can only be accomplished through an effective Management Information Reporting System (MIRS) fed by an equally strong business Infrastructure. The information and data supplied by the appropriate Infrastructure within an organization will give management accurate and timely information to enable them to "look forward" and make the necessary choices to succeed, based on current, everyday accurate information supplied by its Infrastructure. In the early development of a business, one person could be responsible for all the Infrastructure required to successfully run an organization, such as: Sales, Merchandise Purchasing, Credit and Collection, Warehousing, Shipping, Bookkeeping, etc. That same person would act as: Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Chief Financial Officer (CFO), Chief Operating Officer (COO), Chief Information Officer (CIO), etc. All the information required to successfully run a business was in one person's head. But, as organizations grow to 25, 50, 100 or 1000 people, these functions become departmentalized under the direction of the CEO, CFO, COO, and CIO and become the organization's Infrastructure that supplies information and data required for the development of an effective Management Information Reporting System (MIRS), which is necessary for management to make decisions that successfully guide their business." The book explores leadership styles, the history and birth of the computer age and goes through the development of selected departments and how to set up the procedures required to insure the accuracy of information flow which is crucial to sustain a successful Management Information Reporting System (MIRS).

Good Condition Book.......2005-10-15
Book arrived on time. Tracking showed it was shipped from VA, instead of TN as was stated. Book was in stated condition though.
Highly recommended.......2004-03-29
This is a well written and well presented book. It helps the reader decide which options are most appropriate to his/her scenario and includes lots of new information relevant to Windows Server 2003.
The book goes beyond the bare minimum information needed to pass the exam and instead offers lots of additional tips and useful pieces of information which the authors have no doubt acquired through their years of experience in the world of designing Active Directory solutions.
Thoroughly recommended!
