Book Description
Mission style conjures up the cultures of Morocco and North Africa, Spain, and Mexico. It blends seamlessly with the artistic genius of southwestern, Native American, and a utopian Californian vision. In looking at the style, it is difficult to remember that the Pueblo Indians first crafted expressions of Spanish Mission architecture under the supervision of Franciscan friars in the 1600s.
Even if the Pueblos didn't recognize the timeless beauty they created, we recognize it now, and this book artfully puts it into perspective. Picking up where Elmo Baca's Rio Grande High Style left off, this book focuses solely on Mission style and goes into vivid detail both historical and current. The stylish interiors, beautiful gardens, solid furnishings, and graceful architecture continue to make an impact today.
Elmo Baca is the author of Rio Grande High Style: Furniture Craftsman, Native American Style, Santa Fe Design, and Mabel's Santa Fe and Taos. A historic preservationist, he has been directly involved in the rehabilitation of twenty buildings listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Currently director of Community Development for the State of New Mexico, he is a frequent contributor to West, Southwest Art, and New Mexico magazines.
Customer Reviews:
Okay, so it's not about interiors..........2000-10-21
I think the other two reviewers here are kinda missing the point. There are scads of other books out there showing interior decorating ideas for Craftsman houses. This book, while superficially resembling those, has something else in mind. It traces the mission style from the actual missions, through the style's collision with the Arts and Crafts movement, and the subsequent development of what we know as the Spanish style house. It continues on from there, showing how the style then went on to influence Modernism (through Irving Gill). Yeah, so it doesn't have lots of pictures showing A&C interiors. The terms "Mission" and "Arts & Crafts" are used a little too interchangeably by most people. There is a difference, and this book explains it. If nothing else, it's got a little more meat to it than most of the picture books.
Chiefly focuses on the history and architecture of mission.......1999-08-18
This book goes as far back as the Moors in Spain to explain mission style architecture. There is a great deal of discussion of exterior mission style and relatively little example of interior design. A great reference if you want to study the foundations of mission style, and view current examples of the architecture. Not very useful in interior decorating.
exterior "mission" architecture not of the actual period.......1999-02-19
this book focuses on the history of actual missions. It is not meant for a person looking for suggestions or ideas on early american architecture/arts and crafts/mission style interiors.
Customer Reviews:
WOW.......2002-06-26
As a person from the northeast (staten island new york to be exact) I was never interested in fishing or it's culture. But upon reading and veiwing this book I was amazed. I thought fishing was a redneck back woods thing, but Mr. Olander's paintings show life and show diversity and opened a new door up for me. WOW! My personal favorite is on page 32, of the tripletail, again WOW!
a western perspective on a japanese technique.......2001-10-01
A beautiful book. I picked up this book out of curiosity and was impressed by the quality of the prints themselves. It made me want to go out and print some fish myself. My only complaint is that I wanted to see some more detailed writing on technique, though his comentary (on each print) in terms of the different breeds and catching of the fish involved was entertaining and disarmingly free of pretentions.
nicely laid out book.......2001-05-05
Olander's book exhibits excellent promotion and hype, not skilled fish prints. Although he uses color fairly well, the technical aspects of his printing leave a bit to be desired, and design elements are lacking. It's a shame that this book is used as an example of fine printing, when it is not at all. For some excellent and stunning fish prints, check out the website of the Fish Print Factory in Japan. Although these are done in the indirect method vice Olander's direct, there is an exemplary use of color, shading, tones, balance, and design.
A Showcase for a Beautiful Art Form!.......2000-07-06
Doug's talents leave me speechless and dewey-eyed with awe. Not only did I become so enthralled that I am trying to take up gyotaku myself, but I simply HAD to own one of his paintings - and now I do! After trying this art form myself, I am even more humbled by his incredible talents; he truly brings these beautiful fish back to life in front of my eyes! I loved the book; it is a frequent source of inspiration for me!
lots of gorgeous prints, very little technical info.......2000-02-29
If you are looking for technical information regarding gyotaku, this book will not help you much at all. In that case, you will be much better served by considering Bethmann's "Nature Printing with Herbs, Fruits & Flowers" which has a small gyotaku section. If you are looking for examples of artistic presentation of gyotaku prints, this book provides 53 color plates of fish prints done by the author. That's not what I was looking for (sigh).

Customer Reviews:
An Intimate Look at Music Over Four Decades.......1999-12-08
This is the book to get for the REAL music fan. Photographer/author David Redfern provides an intimate look back at his career, spanning the 1950s right up to the present (AND the future!). The photographs? Outstanding images, many of the artists in performance and, more often than not, captured upfront and tack-sharp on his medium format Hasselblad. No matter what musical genre you're into you'll find David's been there and captured it: rock `n' roll (the Rolling Stones, Beatles, Little Richard, Jimi Hendrix, Led Zep), jazz (Miles, John Coltrane, Duke Ellington, Ella, Monk, Ben Webster), folk (Bob Dylan, Joan Baez), blues and r&b (B.B. King, Ike & Tina Turner, Chuck Berry, James Brown, Al Green, Keb Mo), pop (the Osmonds, Dusty Springfield, Frank Sinatra) and even country (Willie Nelson, Dolly, Johnny Cash). What makes this book so much fun, though, are the related reminiscences that David shares with us (a quick example: on one occasion he accompanied a writer to get pictures of Miles Davis. As David relates in the book, "Miles opened the door, saw me, and shouted, 'Get out!' I smiled nervously and remained frozen to the spot. Suddenly he grinned and said, 'Hi, how are you? Come on in.'"). Whether you're a photographer OR a music aficionado I think you'll find this a great book to curl up with over and over again (and if you just happen to be a shooter AND a music freak, like I am, then this one's a MUST!).
definative music picture collection spanning four decades.......1999-07-15
With the accent on Jazz and Blues photography, but also spanning popular cultural icons including some classic but little known images of the Beatles and Rolling Stones; it's the story of one man's priviledged insite into the music world. This Sixty three year old 6 foot 4" British photographer, armed with a Hasselblad and press pass, catalogued everybody from Sinatra to Sonny Rollins, both onstage, in the studio, or hanging out in some of the legendary clubs. His textual commentary, loaded with amusing and frank anecdotes, makes a fine companion to the pictures, which speak for themselves. Any visitor to London will find his portraits adorning the walls of the famous Ronnie Scott's nightclub.

Book Description
This book makes available for the first time in English a substantial part of Otto Neurath's economic writings. The essays and small monographs translated here extend from his student years to his last ever finished piece. They chart not only Neurath's varied interests in the economic history of antiquity, in war economics and schemes for the socialisation of peacetime economies, in the theory of welfare measures and social indicators and in issues of the theory of collective choice, but also show his philosophical interests emerging in his contributions to seminal debates of the German Social Policy Association. This volume shows that Neurath's important contributions to the socialist calculation debate are but one aspect of a many-sided and original oeuvre. The translations are preceded by an introductory essay by one of the editors which contextualises the selections by locating them in the various debates of the time that provided their original setting.
This book is of interest to economists, philosophers of social science and of economics as well as to historians of philosophy of science and of analytic philosophy.

Book Description
This work documents the rise and fall of Pacific American Fisheries, a salmon packing company based in Bellingham, Washington, which also had a substantial presence in Alaska. It covers the company's history from its beginnings when Roland Onffroy arrived in early 1898 and saw an opportunity to start a business and make a mint using the abundant supply of salmon in nearby Puget Sound, up until its closing in 1966. The company's story is presented chronologically as unfolding local, regional, national, and international events impacted the fortunes of the company, its employees, and the town that housed it. It also takes a close look at the entrepreneurs, developers, businessmen, and Asian labor force that were associated with the company. PAF's history can also be read as the story of how the United States was developed as people moved from the Atlantic to Pacific coasts and how the Pacific coast was targeted for development due to its natural resources that could easily be exploited for profit.

Book Description
Subjected to the discipline of work and production, people’s living standards have risen across the North and in the most economically dynamic areas of the South. But material affluence is accompanied by increasing levels of stress, insecurity, depression, crime, and addiction. The environmen that life itself depends on is also being destroyed. This book is a history of the capitalist culture of work.
Customer Reviews:
Work as pathological obsession.......2005-03-26
"Selling the Work Ethic" by Sharon Beder is a highly readable and thought-provoking history of how work has come to dominate our society. Using thorough documentation and skillful analysis, Ms. Beder contends that today's pathological obsession with work is a direct result of the capitalist production of human subjectivity. The author argues that a change in priorities from production and consumption to one that privileges the quality of life and the environment is needed to resuscitate our frayed society.
Section One discusses the Reformation and the transition from precapitalism to the present. Ms. Beder contrasts the anti-materialist teachings from ancient Greece and the early Christian church with the Protestants who gave a voice to the emerging capitalist class by equating prosperity with virtue. As time progressed, business-sponsored schools, churches and newspapers promoted the work ethic and coerced labor to accept the discipline of the factory. The effectiveness of this mass propaganda is attested to the fact that despite declining real wages and growing inequality, the myth of the American Dream persists to the present day.
Section Two is on the topic of motivating work. Ms. Beder begins with Taylor and Ford to show how industrialists experimented with various methods for controlling and exploiting the workforce. But as welfare capitalism subsequently sought to create emotional and familial bonds with employees and curb union militancy, the downsizing and job insecurity of the postmodern era has shattered the employment contract. Hence the recent restructuring of government welfare programs has been necessitated to punish the poor into accepting menial jobs that otherwise might go unfilled.
Section Three is about conditioning. The education system molds students for production through overwork and instills the ethos of competition by organizing team sports. Mass marketing leads to increased consumption of the commodities that signify status in a society of mass anonymity. Unfortunately, the stress of working long hours to achieve material success manifests itself in a myriad of social maladies including anxiety, obesity and rampant drug abuse.
Ms. Beder concludes that the work ethic crowds out time for people to reflect on the deeper meaning of their lives and to work collectively towards change. While the author offers little guidance as to how people might move beyond this impasse, those who do take the time to read her book are rewarded with greater insight and understanding. In this respect, then, "Selling the Work Ethic" may help readers begin to deconstruct and challenge the status quo.
I highly recommend this book to everyone.
Fine piece of work! - worthwhile work, that is!.......2001-10-03
As always, Dr. Sharon Beder presents us with some
mind-altering analysis, which will probably change
your view of the world and, what is valuable therein.
After reading this, a pleasure in itself, you will
come away with a much better understanding of why
our societies run the way they do and, how they
will have to run differently if we want to have a
realistic chance of ending the madness, of creating a more
human world, which our ancestors will be able to live in...
So that's where it all turned to custard!!.......2001-09-27
Have you ever wondered why people introduce themselves by saying "what they do"? Have you ever wondered why "work" is so central to everything we say, do, or think about? Well this book answers a lot of those questions. I found that I would read a chapter and then think about it for a couple of days before moving on because it shook my very foundation THAT HARD. I can't recommend this book enough.
This book is a real weak up call.......2001-07-17
A very lucid description of today's corporate attitude towards its employees and work in general. The book shows how corporations in the Western World are cashing in big times at the expense of both employee and consumer naivity. The book's style is extemely cursive and easy, in fact I could not put the book down, I had to read it in one sitting.
