Book Description

The Caribbean offers a huge variety of architectural styles that have been influenced by the many European settlers who colonized the islands, as well as the Africans, Amerindians, and East Indians who were brought to the region as laborers. Some styles are unique to individual islands such as the chattel houses in Barbados or the urban townhouses in St Croix. Throughout the region there is significant evidence of a strong Georgian influence--government buildings, churches, libraries, and other public buildings as well as the large plantation houses. In this book, Suzanne Gordon and Anne Hersh take the reader on a guided tour of the architectural highlights of the Eastern Caribbean, from Anguilla to Trinidad.

Illustrated with detailed photographs of buildings and architectural features and accompanied by maps and architectural plans, this is a knowledgeable and interesting account of the development and influences of construction and design in the Caribbean.

5 out of 5 stars An exceptionally useful and beautiful work of art!.......2006-03-23

This is an absolutely fascinating book on the Caribbean - the content, the writing and the photography are all superb.
In addition to its stated purpose of being an architectural guide, it surpasses most travel books in the useful information it imparts to anyone visiting this delightful area or wishing to learn more about its rich culture and heritage. Aside from the stunningly beautiful color photography, the maps and drawings are very helpful and tastefully displayed. This certainly is my new, indispensable reference source on the Eastern Caribbean. I'm amazed at how much relevant and useful information the authors managed to present in one book. It's both beautiful and impressive and a delight to read. I'm definitely ordering many more copies as gifts for friends.

I was just in Berkeley, CA and happed to see an exhibit of the original art which is the subject of this book at the GTU Library. The illustrations in the book are true to the original and the book provides the necessary context for a complete appreciate of this marvelous work.

2 out of 5 stars I should've known.......2006-09-28

Honestly, I was kind of excited to see a book written about Maxscript and the corresponding SDK. Unfortunately, this book is mostly MaxScript and some SDK knowledge. As stated in another review, it doesn't help you master anything; it just introduces you to it.

Also, notice when it was written. This book was published for MAX R3. Since then, about 70% of 3dsMax functionality has been added to the package, so this book is absurdly out of date. I would not recommend it over the current help-file included in 3dsMax.

4 out of 5 stars Wish the SDK took up more space.......2003-04-05

The Max SDK has gone some improvements since this book was written but the general idea is the same. This is book is an excellent book to start writing your own plug-ins for MAX. It's too bad that it's the only book out there with the SDK. I hope this author comes out with some more of these books.

5 out of 5 stars GREAT MAX BOOK.........2002-02-05

I THINK THIS IS THE DEFINITIVE SOURCE FOR ANYONE WANTING TO GET EVERYTHING THEY CAN FROM THE LATEST VERSION OF MAX. I LOVED THE PRACTICE FILES IN THE CD ALSO..

4 out of 5 stars Not for the faint-hearted casual user of MAX.......2001-12-26

Aimed at advanced users who need complete control over 3D Studio MAX, this manual teaches the black art of MAXScript writing. The last third of the book also covers the Software Developers Kit (SDK), which enables you to design your own plug-ins.

If you have no programming experience then Mastering MAXScript was designed for you. Through over 11 chapters, which begin with a basic overview and conclude with a look at MAXScript extensions, you'll be able to gain unprecented control over MAX R3 and its previous versions.

On the other hand, if you want to make the most out of the SDK you'll need knowledge of C++ (MAX' native language) and Win32 programming. Not for the fain-hearted.

3 out of 5 stars The only book on programming 3DStudio Max.......2001-07-14

First of all, there isn't really anything else on the market, so if you have to write a 3DStudio plugin this is it. On the otherhand the coding examples are only average. As in learn to code somewhere else, and just use the API exposed in this book to do the plugin. Don't have global varibles everywhere. Use standard library containers, don't write your own.

        Book Description

The four volumes of Game Equilibrium Models present applications of non-cooperative game theory. Problems of strategic interaction arising in biology, economics, political science and the social sciences in general are treated in 42 papers on a wide variety of subjects. Internationally known authors with backgrounds in various disciplines have contributed original research. The reader finds innovative modelling combined with advanced methods of analysis. The four volumes are the outcome of a research year at the Center for Interdisciplinary Studies of the University of Bielefeld. The close interaction of an international interdisciplinary group of researchers has produced an unusual collection of remarkable results of great interest for everybody who wants to be informed on the scope, potential, and future direction of work in applied game theory. Volume II Methods, Morals and Markets contains areas of research which will attract the interest of economists, political scientists, mathematicians and philosophers. The papers deal with the methodology of analysis of games, game theoretic contributions to fundamental ethical questions facing societies and game-theoretic analyses of market environments.

          Description:
This work presents a systematic approach to introduce the evolution of technology, market and environmental regulations into process design, more specifically into the generation of retrofit alternatives. For this purpose the information on development of technology, economic and environmental performances is obtained. Firstly, the evolution of the technology for the production of a chemical and its precursors is analyzed. Afterwards, the development of the market situation regarding prices and demand together with the progress of the environmental regulations is studied. This allows for the assessment of the economic and environmental performance of the process over time. Finally, the economic and environmental assessment is used for the identification of process alternatives that can further improve the process performance in the future. This methodology is demonstrated using the production of hydrogen cyanide as a case study.

This stimulating anthology looks at exemplary practices of teacher unions from the local to the national level. The 25 articles weave together issues of teacher unionism, classroom reform, working with local communities, and social justice. Includes excerpts from local contracts dealing with professional issues; also resources and questions for discussion. A terrific tool for anyone working in or with teacher unions today. Authors of articles include Howard Zinn, Dan Perlstein, Robert Lowe, Herbert Kohl, Ann Bastian, Bob Chase, Sandra Feldman, Bill Fletcher, and many classroom teachers and union activists.

3 out of 5 stars Good ideas, missing ideas.......2007-04-22

This book advocates for a new kind of social justice unionism that goes beyond bread & butter issues (like salaries) to placing teacher unions at the forefront of school reform in order to better serve students.

There are a lot of valid and interesting points raised by various contributors, but the book emphasizes teacher/administrator collaboration on school reform to the detriment of a discussion about building union power in the first place.

How do we put teachers in the driver's seat? How do fight for the decent compensation that many districts still lack? Social justice unionism is based on a weak premise if it isn't based on a militant union willing to go to mat for what's right. (And I whole heartedly agree that our unions, and not private corporations, should be at the forefront of school reform.)

4 out of 5 stars ...should be required reading to get a teaching credential........1999-10-12

While the book deals with the types of teacher unionism in considerable detail, there is only brief mention of the need for teachers themselves to be teachers of unionism. Howard Zinn states in an interview, "If teacher unions want to be strong and well-supported, it's essential they not only be teacher unionists but teachers of unionism... to create a generation of students who support teachers and the movement of teachers for their rights."

If the survival of teacher unionism depends upon teachers teaching unionism, they will have to learn about it first. Teacher unions need to teach their members, certainly their site representatives about the history of unionism. Short of having a required course in the role of unions in public education, Transforming Teacher Unions: Fighting for Better Schools and Social Justice should be required reading at least for one of the many classes teachers have to take for a credential.
