Frankly I was disappointed in this book. Its emphasis on landscape only doesn't mean that all the same information isn't already to be found in other sources on building security. Although the authors relish the information on the power of differing explosions, there's not a lot of technical information on actually countering them. Vehicle delivered bomb blasts are pretty much it for the threats considered. And the suggested responses are predictable ones already seen around government buildings. This book might be useful if you have never considered the subject at all; otherwise it's not.

excellent resource for practitioners.......2005-12-12

Today's discussions of the public realm seem dominated by the idea of threat - whether natural or man-made. As designers we have an obligation to respond both to public concerns and to our professional charge of creating dynamic and vital spaces. But how do we create these spaces, and integrate security measures so they're not rendered as arrays of bollards, streetlamps, and planters?

I was pleased to find Security and Site Design to help guide my questions on this issue. Where we as a culture quickly become absorbed in escalating levels of fear, the authors, Hopper and Droge, outline a basic plan for integrating our concerns into our designs. Of particular note is their emphasis that not all potential threats can be nullified through design. In fact, our public places would no longer be the civic spaces they were meant to be if we were to cater solely to our worst fears. I found in their writing a delicate balance between designing to a reasonable threat level and maintaining our professional charge of creating "a sense of place".

The book outlines through examples and numerous case studies the basic physical areas where one can have the greatest influence in terms of security: street, parking lane, sidewalk, building yard, building perimeter, and building interior. Although I was admittedly dismayed to find out at what distance my body would completely disintegrate if standing near a truck bomb, I appreciated the fact that frank discussions about threats and their relative likelihood were contextualized in the practical issues of design decisions that have to be made.

Hopper and Droge do not purport to have all the answers, pointing out that the field of security design is still in its infancy and holds the potential for many technical and programmatic innovations to be made. For better or worse, it looks like we'll be exploring the topic for a long time to come.

a great resource for 'site-security' design.......2005-08-12

A very good basic resource for understanding what 'physical security' is about and how it can be combined with landscape design to look good and include public amenities. The best section is the collection of case studies of how it has been done well already, such as at official public buildings and public streetscapes. Decent Primer.......2003-11-06

As a technology instructor, I evaluated this book for use as a student text. In that respect, it works well enough, covering material such as computer hardware, video terminology and the practices of editing video in just enough detail for me to be satisfied, even appreciative.

The book is not without faults. In particular, I would've liked another 100 pages or so regarding the editing features of software besides Premier, and of course this book suffers from the technology-book curse - it's 18 months old and many aspects are at this point somewhat out of date or inaccurate; something like this should really be updated annually.

The author did have the foresight to include a short section on authoring video projects to DVD and various types of video CDs, and I like that effort was made to introduce the reader to techniques in capturing good footage.

Finally, a clear, coherent and comprehensive resource that explains everything that I could only find in bits and pieces elsewhere.

a good DV shooting and editing primer..........2002-04-28

I wanted to get a book that would give me a clue on using my camcorder better, as well give me a better idea of computer video editing (not to mention humor me with my filmmaking aspirations). This book covers all that and more very clearly, with lots of helpful picture examples. I now know what all my camcorder's manual controls do and when to use them. On the computer front, I finally was able to figure out how to make a VCD/SVCD that has good image quality, and if I can ever afford a DVD recorder I am fairly confident I know how to do that now too. If you want to know all about DV (both filming and editing), this is an accessible, solidly written book.

Pretty to look at, but painful to read.......2005-12-16

I purchased this book for my 2-year old daughter to introduce her to some of the classic Disney characters. I liked the handle and board pages, and the artwork, but my enjoyment ends there. When trying to read the story aloud to my daughter, I found that 1) the photos poorly match the written storyline. For example, one story mentions items in a picture that were cropped out a fancy border. Another discusses events that aren't shown in the pictures, and what is shown in the pictures is not clear from the story. The pictures seem poorly chosen, as if they were leftover frames off the cutting room floor. It's as if one person chose the stills and a different person adapted the narrative from the original cartoon, and never collaborated. 2) the prose vocabulary is upper grade level and uses outdated figures of speech (e.g. 'mixing it up' is used to mean interacting with others at a party). I have tried to like this book, but groan whenever my daughter pulls it off the shelf.

In my humble opinion ,this maybe one of the best books of Finance... It is practical,direct to the point,the examples are clearly stated so that you can follow the concepts and central ideas and most important : you really can understand everything in an easy way....no sweat here..
You can apply almost everything in this book to your daily practice. No matter your years of experience , FFE will refresh you and reinforce your knowledge. I always have this book on my desk for reference.

Finance for Executives' is invaluable for everybody who needs to analyse companies and wants to know whether investment, financing or business decisions create value. It is written very clearly and is therefore easy to understand. It offers plenty of practically relevant examples, mostly based on one company which is being analysed in its different aspects throughout the whole book. Moreover, every chapter finishes with review problems (including solutions) and useful references. Some chapters offer appendices with mathematical proofs or additional in-depth analysis. - You will not be satisfied with this book if you are looking for a scientific, theoretical text. However, your expectations will be exceeded if you are a practitioner who wants to make an impact in a consulting or investment banking environment. - What does make this book so special? After working through it, you will be able to easily put into practice what you read.

This book is great as an introduction to the major concepts of finance. If you are looking for an advanced refernce book, this is not the one. But if you want to refresh your memory, or want a quick overview of concepts and methods, I can't think of a better book.

The authors demystify the art of finance and suggest pragmatic approaches and solutions for every day capital uses and needs. This attractive and attractively priced book is written in an innovative way, making it a useful quick desktop reference as well as an MBA level finance text. The glossary by itself is worth the price of the book. How astounding that the authors are both French, yet write with more clarity in English than any American finance writer I have read of late! Vive la readability!

This book analyzes the labor market adjustment processes of immigrants in the United States. Newly-arrived immigrants earn less, work fewer weeks, and have higher rates of unemployment than native-born workers. After a period of assimilation, these conditions later converge to, and often surpass, those of native-born workers. The adjustment process traditionally implies greater employment turnover.
Newly-arrived immigrant men have lower employment and labor force participation rates than similar native-born American men. Yet differences in unemployment rates are less consistent, and are complicated by shorter periods of unemployment duration for immigrants. Contrary to expectations, recent immigrants are less likely to be unemployed, even after adjusting for a lower duration of unemployment. This is partly because movements in and out of the labor force are high. Lower employment for recent immigrants is best explained by lower labor force participation, while higher unemployment rates are best explained by high rates of labor force entry. All labor force outcomes for immigrants, whether higher or lower upon arrival, converge to native-born norms after a few years of residence.
