    Book Description

In 1896, Kate Cranston, the pioneer of Glasgow tea rooms in the late nineteenth century, commissioned Charles Rennie Mackintosh—who would become one of the Western worlds' most renowned designers—to design her tea rooms, and over the next two decades he did so with dazzling inventiveness. (Mackintosh's wife, Margaret, herself an artist, also made important contributions to the interior designs.) Cranston and Mackintosh opened up a unique, avant-garde artistic world to thousands of ordinary people and their tea rooms became internationally famous. Taking Tea with Mackintosh illustrates their exciting collaboration with black-and-white historical photographs of the tea rooms and color photographs of their surviving components. In addition, sixteen recipes for traditional tea room cakes, breads, and pastries are supplied, offering the best chance the reader will have to revisit these extraordinary places.

By Perilla Kinchin. 112 pages, over 40 color reproductions and black-and-white historical photographs, size: 8 1/2 x 7 1/2". Casebound book, with dust jacket.

      5 out of 5 stars Well done!.......2006-12-16

The best part of this book is that more than half of it is interviews with successful designers, and examples of their work. They are quite candid, and talk about how they became a designer or started a studio, and how they run their business and deal with customers. Highly recommended.

      5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......1998-05-18

For many people in the Graphic Arts profession, the business side is often missed in their schooling. For those who forgot to take Business courses while they were in Art school this book is for you.

                      5 out of 5 stars Special Memories.......2003-07-12

My dear friend and I (caucasian & africian american) used this book and song in our puppet ministry. Our friendship was very special and each thought the other as a special person, not because of color but the respect and love we shared with each other - that God made us special and unique in our own way. I believe it reflects exactly what children and all people are to God and what we should be to each other.

5 out of 5 stars Great memories, Great bonding, Great message!.......2000-01-13

I remember reading and singing this with my parents and brother when I was small. I remember most of it and found parts of the book. I would love to be able to get this for my own children, who sing what I remember of it and teach to them. A reprint would definitely be worthwhile! There's nothing more important than making your child feel special and this does it so well!

                      5 out of 5 stars A wonderful esteem builder!.......1999-01-10

This is the kind of message that children need to hear over and over again. I read it to my son as a child of 3 and 4. He is now 24 and can recite many of the passages. The truth of the passages were written on his heart. Please, Please publish it again. I would buy it for every young child I know.

5 out of 5 stars A wonderful book to show how important children are to God.......1998-05-30

This book was read to me as a child and has always been with me even today and unfortunetly I don't have the recording of it anylonger because as a child I lost it. I read it with my niece and nephews and the enjoy it terminidristly. Right now as I am typing my niece is reading and singing it. I would love if there was some way that this book could go back on print again. It is a wonderful book and I only wish that other children could have it to really learn the importance of family and the love of God.

                                    Book Description

Workers’ compensation was arguably the first widespread social insurance program in the United States—before social security, Medicare, or unemployment insurance—and the most successful form of labor legislation to emerge from the early progressive movement.

In A Prelude to the Welfare State, Price V. Fishback and Shawn Everett Kantor challenge widespread historical perceptions by arguing that workers’ compensation, rather than being an early progressive victory, succeeded because all relevant parties—labor and management, insurance companies, lawyers, and legislators—benefited from the ruling. Rigorous and convincing, A Prelude to the Welfare State is a major reappraisal of the causes and consequences of a movement that ultimately transformed the nature of social insurance and the American workplace.

“Substantial, well-written, and compelling. . . . The end result is an in-depth analysis of how workers’ compensation was created and initially implemented in the United States at the beginning of the twentieth century”—Christopher R. Larrison, Journal of Sociology and Social Welfare

4 out of 5 stars The Birth of the Welfare State.......2001-10-18

Excerpted from a book review by Robert Whaples in the Independent Review (Fall 2001)

Given the colossal size of the federal government in the United States and its pervasive influence on our economic lives, it is surprising that the growth of government isn't the subject of most history books written about the twentieth century. Unfortunately, the list of good books on the subject is surprisingly short. Fortunately, Price Fishback and Shawn Kantor have written a book that can be added to that short list. Indeed, their book, with its rigorous analysis of both markets and politics, is a model for others to follow.

Fishback and Kantor's exhaustive research provides new insights into why almost all states adopted workers' compensation laws between 1910 and 1921, even though related reform proposals were stillborn. [They] examine the timing of adoption across states and conclude that "progressive" politicians played only a marginal role. The strength of employer and worker interest groups was crucial. The occurrence of a crisis in the old liability system was also extremely important.

Probably the greatest shortcoming of this book is a failure to go back one more step to explain the origins of this crisis in greater detail. Whatever the reasons, the origin of the workers' compensation system, like the growth of government during much of the rest of the twentieth century, hinged crucially on a crisis.

Ultimately, the, Fishback and Kantor's painstaking analysis gives a clear picture of the operation of the American market and political system in an era when the logic of the welfare state was still generally rejected and when other programs that eventually became part of the welfare state (old-age pensions, unemployment insurance and subsidies, and sickness insurance) were not politically viable.
