Polymer Clay Creative Traditions: Techniques and Projects Inspired by the Fine and Decorative Arts.......2007-08-03
This is the perfect and complete polymer clay book. Step by step are so clear and Judy Belcher is a talented and generous clay artist. Must buy.
Right Up There With the Best of Them!.......2007-06-13
This is a wonderfully inspirational polymer clay book, with a fresh approach and new ideas. The photos, diagrams, and written instructions are detailed enough to actually be useful and the projects are enticing enough to make readers want to actually try them, rather than just view the pictures. This is a fine addition to my polymer clay library and a book I'll refer to often.
A real inspiration!!.......2007-04-11
Polymer clay artists are frequently inspired by other art forms
-from fibre and metalwork to painting and sculpture.
Judy shows how to turn inspiration into reality and just how versatile
polymer clay is for this purpose.
Each chapter starts from a material-based art tradition, eg. glass, metal,
wood, and develops the techniques associated with these crafts in concise,
clearly explained projects. Each technique has a gallery of beautiful
examples of both the source artforms, such as exquisite pieces of
wood furniture, and several works in polymer clay inspired by the material
and sometimes combined with it in mixed media objects.
Judy has selected her gallery artists with care -the best work by the best artists-dazzling!
By illustrating high standards of design and execution, she places polymer clay
on an equal footing with older art material traditions and demands that we keep aiming higher.
For me this is the real inspirational effect of a great book.
Well done, Judy Belcher.

Salt Dough taken to a higher skill level.......2007-05-28
This is a GREAT book for more advanced techniques in salt dough. I looked through all available library books, online, and Amazon for the most informative book and this is it! It offers much more information than just ingredients. It's the only good source I found for techniques of browning, colors various types of flour produce, and air drying...something of importance for people like me who don't wish to spend a lot of money on oven drying for hours. Yes, most patterns are "traditional," but they are beautifully done and this is a traditional medium. What I liked the most is it gives you examples utilizing techniques that can enable you to create your own wild and crazy patterns that are either simple or more complex. It seems to me this book isn't for the person only looking for young kids' patterns. It demonstrates that you can really use this medium to create more contempory art for any age as well.
Dated looking projects without instructions.......2005-02-27
The best part of this book is the elaborate instructions in the first half for making dough, etc. The large majority of the projects however look extremely dated - as if a book from the 70's was re-released today. A few I would consider timeless - but to add insult to injury there are almost no detailed instructions for most of the projects. The instructions that are there are incomplete. For example, I liked the breads and pretzel. A couple of lines of very general instructions for each was included but the one thing I really needed to know - what was used for the salt and other toppings - was not reavealed. We were left to guess from the picture.
Lots of beautiful illustrations.......2002-02-02
Kiskalt gives you some very good tips on greating dough crafts and different recipes for creating different types of crafts. There are lots of beautiful illistrations of varied crafts...it's almost unbelievable what she can do with this medium...especially unbelievable when you first try it yourself. This is not an easy medium to work with and have it turn out looking like anything Kiskalt has pictured. And she does not show you any step-by-step illistrations on how she made her creations. I would say this stuff takes a lot of goofs and practice to get anywhere near the level she presents in the book...but it is fun trying!
Need An Idea Jumpstart? This book is for you!.......2000-12-20
I purchased this book because it had wonderful folk art ideas for working in dough. I made two of the projects from the book, using polymer clay and dough. The directions translated easily from one medium to another and turned out spectacular. Also is a great resource for using findings and jumpstarting your imagination on your tools. I did not spend any money on tools and had a wonderful time looking around my home and yard for interesting things I could press into the clay, and then the dough. If you are interested in this craft, this is a great book for you!

A BEAUTIFUL Book! If you like working with dough, this is the one for you. Gorgeous photos with lots of ideas and projects for you to try your hand at. Great detailed instructions with hints and tips. You won't be dissappointed.

Customer Reviews:
Faux for DOH!.......2004-01-04
If you are someone who isn't looking to necesarily start your own business, but rather, have a hobby you charge for on the side then this book is right for you. It won't, however, give insight on how to conduct yourself in a professional business manner, how to deal with clients, what business practices are necesary with regards to paperwork, etc., or how to go about advertising successfully.
Faux For Dough.......2003-12-27
I thought the book was definitely not geared for a professional faux finisher. It was way too general in nature to really help someone start a faux finishing business. It needs more specific information on business aspects. Most of the information given in the book was just common sense & did not warrant the purchase of this book. There are other books on the market that do a much better job of giving one the in depth information needed to start their own painting business. This book was, sadly, a big disappointment.
Skims the Surface.......2003-06-06
I felt the book touched on the basics but never really gave me anything to start my own business. Many of the pages were filled with large photograhphs instead of in-depth knowledge. I was hoping for a book that would tell it all so that I could go out and begin a faux painting business...with confidence. Not impressed.

inexpensive, fun and beautiful.......2000-03-31
This is a wonderful book for someone who's a beginner or a veteran in crafts. The book tells you everything: from how to make the dough to the templates for the beautiful designs to what materials you need. The projects vary in difficulty but the authors give you a host of suggestions as to how to do them, step by step and with clear and precise instructions. The photographs are also very helpful. I recommend it to anyone who enjoys crafts and is tired of books with corny projects!

the best headache you'll ever have.......2000-05-30
This comic strip was brought to my attention via REM's "Monster", many years ago. That horrible excuse for a CD was good for at least one thing!
The evil twin of Charlie Brown, Migraine Boy never gets a break, but that doesn't stop him from taking his frustrations out on all the neighborhood kids who bug him. These strips have varying styles of humor - alternately twisted, violent, morbid, one-liner, and deadpan. The art looks like it was drawn by someone actually suffering from a migraine: very frantic scribbling, wavy lines... all the better to convey the special atmosphere of this strip. Give it a try!

An in-house mouthpiece, and it shows........2005-09-01
In the Introduction to this book, it is simply and briefly stated: "The St. Regis Paper Company sponsored the effort (book)." And then it goes on to name a lot of people who read the book before publication and provided "many substantive editorial comments. James F. Kussmann, vice-president of public affairs, was the company's gracious and patient liaison." So, we can conclude that there is nothing in this book that hasn't been approved by the Company. (Thus, we get very little about the industry's documented pollution creation.) And yet, the main impression I came away with is why would anybody bother to go into the paper making business? There appears to be little return for expenditure. The high cost of mill construction and labor, new product development research expenditures, the difficulty in obtaining raw materials from which the paper is made, plus water and air pollution controls are just a few of the obstacles to overcome. To make a go of the business, much of St. Regis' time and money was spent in acquisitions, first of power utilities and forested lands, then other paper companies to expand their product varieties and geographic locations, then the design and construction of packaging and paper making equipment. St. Regis was one of the largest corporations in the industry (the largest at one time), and became worldwide in scope. Very little is said about profits, but when they are mentioned, they are negligible for the size of the operation. For example, in 1967, St. Regis' holdings outside North America had "a book value of $26 million. St. Regis had at least 50 percent ownership in thirteen firms with sales that year an estimated $85 million." That works out to $5.6 million per plant. And from that we need to subtract millions in costs of operation leaving very little, if any, for profit. There are a handful of other net profit examples given, but when compared to investment to secure them, it hardly seems worthwhile. It is interesting to read of their sales strategies ("selling all the way through" and "the full wagon" were two of them and deserve a text book of their own) and the problems they tried to overcome with various corporate structures. From a little plant in Deferiet, New York opened in 1899 to a multi-national conglomerate 81 years later, this is a very complicated story. And that is the area in which the writers needed much more help. The book is very poorly edited. There is apparently no thought given to the flow of information provided. In one paragraph we could be reading about 1965, then immediately switch back to 1942, then to the mid `70s. The history of St. Regis would have been much more understandable if a chronological order had been followed in the telling; or, barring that, at least a geographical history, state-by-state and country-by-country. But as it is, it's a hodgepodge of information. Even a chart of the organization including its many subsidiaries would have helped. There are 27 pages containing 31 photographs, half of them head shots of Company executives that add little to the book beyond comparing hairstyles over the century. And the book is burdened by executive names with hundreds stuffed into the text. Not only the first and last names, but middle initials were deemed necessary. It's a difficult book to slog through. And when I was done I learned little beyond what I already knew from my family's association with the company as plant technicians. The only reason I can imagine anyone would buy/read this book is because, as a Company executive, their name is one of the hundreds included.

Book Description
After the 1854 abolition of slavery in Peru, a new generation of plantation owners turned to a system of peasant tenantry to maintain cotton production through the use of cheap labor. In Peasants on Plantations Vincent C. Peloso analyzes the changing social and economic relationships governing the production of cotton in the Pisco Valley, a little-studied area of Peru’s south coast. Challenging widely held assumptions about the system of relations that tied peasants to the land, Peloso’s work examines the interdependence of the planters, managers, and peasants—and the various strategies used by peasants in their struggle to resist control by the owners.
Grounded in the theoretical perspectives of subaltern studies and drawing on an extremely complete archive of landed estates that includes detailed regular reports by plantation managers on all aspects of farming life, Peasants on Plantations reveals the intricate ways peasants, managers, and owners manipulated each other to benefit their own interests. As Peloso demonstrates, rather than a simple case of domination of the peasants by the owners, both parties realized that negotiation was the key to successful growth, often with the result that peasants cooperated with plantation growth strategies in order to participate in a market economy. Long-term contracts gave tenants and sharecroppers many opportunities to make farming choices, to assert claims on the land, compete among themselves, and participate in plantation expansion. At the same time, owners strove to keep the peasants in debt and well aware of who maintained ultimate control.
Peasants on Plantations offers a largely untold view of the monumental struggle between planters and peasants that was fundamental in shaping the agrarian history of Peru. It will interest those engaged in Latin American studies, anthropology, and peasant and agrarian studies.
