    Book Description

Lhasa is the most impressive of the few surviving traditional urban centers of Tibet. Among its splendid buildings are the Potala Palace, the traditional seat of the Dalai Lamas, and the Jokhang Temple, the most sacred building in the world of Tibetan Buddhism. Tibetan architecture is increasingly being recognized as one of the great architectural traditions of the world. The Lhasa Atlas surveys the topography, environment, historical development, buildings, and townscape of old Lhasa. It also introduces future plans and discusses some of the issues concerning the safeguarding of the historical townscape in the ongoing process of urban development.

      5 out of 5 stars A completely professional approach.......2001-07-20

The thing about this book is that it is written from a completely professional point of view. It deals with lighting as it is really practiced on professional movie sets - not like most books on cinematography which seem to be written by people who haven't actually done it all that much in the real world. I've bought about every book there is on movie lighting and most of them are a waste of money.

This book covers everything from a basic introduction to color, exposure and electricity up to the more complex technical issues you have to deal with as a gaffer or cinematographer: very thorough and comprehensive. The Set Technicians book is good if all you are trying to be is an electrician, but this is the one you want if you really want to move up as a gaffer, lighting director or Director of Photography. Except for one chapter (film exposure), everything in the book applies equally well to video, digital video or High Def. There is also a very good chapter on video which covers what you REALLY have to know to work in video lighting.

If you work (or want to work) in the motion picture industry, knowing lighting is the key to advancement and success. This is the book to get if you really want to learn motion picture and video lighting.

3 out of 5 stars A good lighting manual for a beginning cameraperson........1998-10-20

Blaine Brown's book provides a decent explanation of set lighting, it's instruments and protocol. The text, though, seems to speak more to the cameraperson or AC who is curious about lighting. There is a lack of attention given to the juicers and hammers who are actually creating and shaping the light. There is a considerable amount of text granted to electrics and the distribution of power, but much more thorough and much more practically explained definitions are readily available in Harry Box's "Set Lighting Technician's Handbook."

      Product Description

Stop-motion animation has long been perceived as a technical practice rather than a creative, demanding art. Though stop-motion requires considerable technical knowledge, it also involves aesthetics and artistry that go beyond the technician’s realm. Just as important as puppet mechanics are lighting, filters, lenses, camera angle and placement, and dramatic pose and movement. This manual is a complete guide to the aesthetics of stop-motion animation. Information is organized in an intuitive, easy-to-use structure, following the order an animator uses in setting up and then executing a scene. The first half concentrates on the aesthetics of lighting and cameras, a primary concern in any shot, with details of camera placement, various lenses and myriad lighting techniques. The second half deals with the process of performance art, an oft-overlooked aspect of stop-motion animation. Included is a commentary on body language, facial expression, gesture, movement and emotion—key concepts that are exemplified through the acting process. The work also offers an introduction to narrative form and a glossary of related terms.

      Customer Reviews:

      3 out of 5 stars Stop-Motion Filming and Performance.......2007-07-03

Like its two previous manuals, Stop-Motion Armature Machining and Stop-Motion Puppet Sculpting and Fabrication, the publisher chose to print Stop-Motion Filming and Performance on substandard paper stock, with low-quality images. This hurts the overall look of the manual, belies the content of the manual, and results in a product that is overpriced for what one gets visually.

The author had requested color photographs for the lighting portion of the manual, and was initially told by the publisher that up to 8 color images would be printed. Eventually, color photos were not used, which further impeded the manual's discussion on color lighting.

The most important aspects of filmmaking (be it live-action or animation) are the story and performances. As such, the author spent a great deal of time discussing story development and animation performance. The author would especially welcome comments from consumers of the manual on those aspects of the manual as well, and to provide more objective and fair criticism.

1 out of 5 stars DO NOT BUY THIS BOOK.......2007-04-06

I am a film student at the University of Miami. I was trying a first time stop/motion experiment and bought this awful book. The section on lighting techniques are all introductory and in no way specific to stop/motion animation. The very few pictures in the book are in b/w and extremely muddy. It is way too general, a complete waste of time, and a rip off for 50 bucks.

      5 out of 5 stars Great book.......2005-02-01

This book is awsome. It starts from very basic information such as the nature of light to delve into specific details. For example it talks about facial features and how light affects their appearance through shadows, etc.
Another great feature is that it gives images of an object or a scene under different types of illumination. Then there are long captions that describe how the scene was illuminated in each picture and what the results are.
It contains very practical information such as how to light a grand piano, or how to avoid camera shadows and other common errors.
It also talks about the actual design and eventual execution of the lighting and about lighting instruments and their use in specific conditions.
Tons of diagrams help understanding and each of them is carefully explained.

This book will help anybody understand the concepts and then it will become their close companion as it contains many tables useful as reference on the set.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best books on LIGHTING for film & television.......1999-12-05

I highly recommend this book to cinematography students wishing to learn about lighting technique and styles. Millerson has taken the trouble to explain a lot of cinematic lighting in detail with a lot of illustrations, charts, diagrams, etc.

This book is a MUST HAVE if one is serious about knowing about film & video lighting. It is easy to understand & is quite well indexed for quick reference.

5 out of 5 stars TURN THE OTHER MUZZLE.......2000-11-14

This book is subtitled "The Theology in Peanuts," and is made up of cartoons taken from "Peanuts" strips spanning the twenty-five years from 1958 to 1983. Philosophically and theologically, they give the reader a lot to think about, albeit thoughts flavored with Schultz's brand of humor.

Schultz gives us an example of unshakeable faith in Linus and his belief that "The Great Pumpkin" will rise up from the most sincere pumpkin patch on Halloween Eve, bearing presents for all the good boys and girls. Linus always rationalizes away "The Great Pumpkin's" non appearances, and the next Halloween finds him back in his pumplin patch, ready and waiting, one more time.

Sally Brown represents the commercial aspect of Christmas in a strip where, after Linus expounds on the true meaning of Christmas, she responds with, "If I don't get everything I want for Christmas this year, I'm gonna gross out."

Then there's Snoopy, the canine philosopher. When asked by Linus if he (Snoopy) is bothered by the fact that the Bible doesn't speak very well of dogs, Snoopy replies, in a thought balloon, that, yes, it bothers him but "I just turn the other muzzle."

And, of course, there's always Good Old Trusting Charlie Brown. In another strip where Lucy tricks Charlie Brown into attempting to kick the football one more time, she lures him by reciting the entire "To everything there is a season." Just as she pulls the ball away, and, as usual, Charlie Brown ends up flat on his back, she adds a new ending, "And a time to pull away the football."

These are but a few examples of Schultz's gentle humor turned toward philosophy and theology and how they affect the "Peanuts" gang.

          5 out of 5 stars Excellent Book -- I wish they'd reprint it.......2000-04-23

In the time since the printing of "Beagles and Bunnies" I have had two copies and I loved the book. However, I wanted to be able to share the experience and so I gave them away. The first went to a preacher in Yosemite who often quoted the strip and the second went a pastor here who also often quoted it. I don't regret giving them away... I just wish I had a copy now that Sparky is gone...

5 out of 5 stars The Real Stuff.......2000-04-04

There have been a number of books discussing how Peanuts comic strips deal with biblical, moral, and theological topics, but this book gets down to the nitty gritty: it lets the strips speak for themselves. It has 125 strips from different periods of the run of Peanuts, and there's good stuff throughout.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Collection Of Strips With Religious Themes.......1999-09-19

Peanuts was one of the first strips to bring religion into the comics mainstream and this is a collection of the more successful strips. The usual Peanuts style of bittersweet humor. Highly recommended.

1 out of 5 stars Charles Schultz turns another blind eye.......1999-01-27

While this book certainly uses an interestingly stark, post-modernist style to capture the subtle ennui of the miserable proletariat world of one Charles Brown, Charles Schultz once again focuses on the 'comic' aspects of cartooning, rather than the myriad problems which affect me personally. Once again he ignores the fact that people like me are forced to eat leftovers, have been reduced to welfare collection (though we do maintain excellent computer systems). . .and don't get me started on his lack of gay characters. I've purchased some of his other books, and if I don't see any improvement, I'll be forced to draw the conclusion that he is pro-bald and pro-yellow shirt and anti-everything else.

              Book Description

Why do some companies perform beyond expectation year after year while others start out strong but quickly fizzle? The answer lies in their ability to create long-term value. In this book, a leading professor at the top-ranked University of Michigan Business School presents five keys to creating value by incorporating the efforts of marketing, manufacturing, human resources, and finance in a strategy for continuing bottom-line success. His fresh look at what makes companies work shows managers how they can identify the factors that create value and use them to benefit their organizations and their own careers.

This book is built around the proposition that we can all be more effective by making our efforts build on one another's rather than working at cross purposes. Most would agree with that point. You cannot build a bridge if another part of your group is demolishing what you have done.

The culprit when this kind of conflict occurs turns out to be a misunderstanding of what the common purpose is. So think of this book has a paean to, guide and workbook for overcoming the communications stall about your what your organization's purpose is.

Properly done, that purpose creates economic value. In a for-profit company, this means having cash earnings in excess of input costs and the opportunity costs of capital. For an individual, you can apply the same concept. In a non-profit organization, you can define economic value as creating benefits for those you serve in excess of their costs and the opportunity costs of the efforts involved.

Professor Thakor makes an intersting argument about why one should overcome this stall. He feels that this is the path to greater self-fulfillment. "Creating value is how we achieve self-fulfillment and realize our unique potential." He also argues that there are career advantages. Those who "get ahead fastest . . . with the [most] energy and enthusiasm, and are the happiest" are those who are highly successful in value creation. I didn't quite follow the argument on this point (which is not spelled out very much, except for stating the conclusions), but would have enjoyed learning more about his research in this area. Why is this so? Perhaps it is related to the joys of learning, creativity, accomplishment, and recognition.

To establish greater value creation, he starts with the reader. He poses questions for you to answer, whether you are the CEO or a file room clerk.

              1. "What does value mean to your organization?

              2. "What does value mean to you?"

              3. "What are all the activities your organization is involved in that create value?"

              4. "What activities are you engaged in that create value?"

              5. "What is your organization's strategy?"

              6. "What is your personal strategy in the organization?"

              7. "How do you and your organization measure success?"

              8. "How do you personally set your own expectations?"

              9. "How fast are you at creating value?"

              10. "What can you do to improve speed without compromising quality?"

The author identifies four major hurdles that must be overcome to improve economic value: a fuzzy sense of value and what creates it (thinking about market share while profits are killed); self-focused behavior that harms the organization (spending budgets to protect them for the next year); negative internal competition (sales contests that expand volume unprofitably); and functional operation focuses (trying to get costs down in ways that hurt customers).

To overcome these tendencies, Professor Thakor proposes getting the right balance of creativity, collaboration, control and competitive focus in each individual and function. He calls this the Wholonics Model, and provides a map as a way to illustrate the differences between where things are now and where they should be.

For example, procurement, manufacturing and finance focus too much on control and not enough on creativity. Sales, marketing, new product development, and distribution are too much on creativity and not enough on collaboration and control. Human resources needs to facilitate growth and reduce bureaucracy. Each function is treated separately in part of a chapter. This material lends a great deal of perspective to the arguments.

To round out the theme of self-fulfillment, the afterword encourages you to check daily for whether you are having fun, whether your value-creating efforts are being perceived and recognized in the company, and whether you are creating value faster than others in your company. This provides you with a personal scorecard for how you are doing, which can provide meaning to your work even if the organization isn't where it needs to be yet.

This book is quite complementary to The Balanced Scorecard and The Strategy-Focused Organization. While I prefer these two books for an overall look at how to create a stall-busting approach to improving organizational performance, I thought that Becoming a Better Value Creator did a better job of developing the issues from the perspective of the individual. Obviously, a book that combined both perspectives would be even better.

My suggestion is that you read these books in this order: The Balanced Scorecard first, The Strategy-Focused Organization second, and Becoming a Better Value Creator third. You should be better able to integrate the perspectives in these books after reading them in that order. To complete the individual perspective, I also suggest How to Be a Star at Work as the fourth book you read. If you are the CEO or other senior executive, you can skip that last book.

After you have finished with your reading and application of these many valuable ideas, I suggest that you consider how these points apply to your own family. What are all of your trying to accomplish together? How can you be more effective in achieving the results of that mutual support? What needs to be done that is not being done now? Who needs to do what? These perspectives would be good ones to add to a fine book like Relationship Rescue.

Have fun at and with your work!

5 out of 5 stars How Valuable Are You?.......2000-09-13

This volume is one in the University of Michigan Business School Management Series. According to Thakor, sustained value creation depends on a mastery of five "secrets" of great value creators:

              1. A clear definition of what value creation means to your organization and to you

              2. A clear understanding of the multiple value creation perspectives and activities that exist at the individual and organizational levels

              3. A clear understanding of the organization's strategy as well as a clearly defined personal strategy for success

              4. A personal measure of success that exceeds organizational expectations

              5. A mastery of speed without sacrificing quality

Thakor correctly stresses the importance of understanding what "value" means, both to you and to your organization. (Is your definition of "value" in proper alignment with your organization's definition of it?) Also, he stresses the importance of continually refining your personal strategy as well as continually improving your motivation to derive internal satisfaction from your efforts. Also, he offers a caution and then a recommendation: "No matter how well you are creating value, there is always somebody out there doing something better than you are. Find out what that something is. Learn that what makes these people better at it [hence more valuable] than you. Discover their `rules' and adapt them to your setting to improve your effectiveness."

Most organizations claim that their most valuable assets "walk out the door at the end of each day." Of course, the reference is to people -- human capital. Perhaps no employee is indispensable but some employees are most valuable than others. However harsh it may seem, employees who create no value have no value. Read Thakor's book. It can help you to create greater value for your organization and thereby increase and enhance your own value to that organization...while perhaps, in process, increasing and enhancing your appeal to other organizations. Think about it....

5 out of 5 stars Nothin' like 'em 'round here........2002-09-22

I never knew how grand the bakeries of Paris where until I read Boulangerie! I wish we had a similar tradition in my home town. I love bread and soup above all other foods! Some day, when I visit Paris, I'll search the city with a copy of this pocket guide in my hand.
I also enjoyed the pictures of the boulangeries of Paris on the authors Web site: Dorseybooks.com

              5 out of 5 stars A TIME MANAGEMENT NECESSITY.......2001-06-17

Let's face it, whether you are visiting Paris for the first or the fifth time, there never seems to be enough time to squeeze everything in. Everyone should take at least one evening or one afternoon for a 3-star dinner or lunch; but, when you are busily going from sight to sight, who has that kind of time? This book is perfect for letting you find bakeries with a wonderful range of foods you can carry away with you. I found that the descriptions of each bakery carried their specialities and any unusual items they carried. The first time you find a conveniently located establishment when you are trying to get from point A to point B, you will know what a treasure it is. The size makes it very convenient to take with you as well.

              5 out of 5 stars An Essential Pre-Paris-Trip Book.......2000-11-29

This book is a jewel. It made our first Paris trip that much more special by introducing us to some exceptionally fine bakeries. This pocket-sized book not only gives you a listing of the fine Boulangeries (organized by arrondisements, includes the address & phone number, closest metro or bus stop, when they are open, and what's special about each) but tells you where to go (nearby picnic spots) and eat the bread and goodies that you buy at these Boulangeries -- this is what truly made the book special. We tried "Robineau" in the 7th and "Gerard Beufort" in the 5th as listed in this book and we were not disappointed. Both had wonderful baked goods, the former within a short walk to the Champ de Mars and Eiffel, and the latter, a 3-minute walk away from Arenes de Lutece, the ancient Roman amphitheater which is a perfect picnic spot. You could use this book to plan your breakfasts and picnic lunches as a nice balance to the Bistro-dining in Paris.

                Book Description

The Policy Analysis of Child Labor examines the conditions which lead to child labor in Bolivia, Colombia, Cocirc;te d'Ivoire, and the Philippine and uses the findings to recommend a new policy approach toward its eradication. The researchers found that many children's days involve both work and schooling, so many of the current policy approaches, such as bans on child labor, are not optimal because they view child work and schooling as mutually exclusive alternatives. Instead, a gradual policy approach in two phases would be more effective. This policy would begin by increasing legal and social protection for working children and adding school time to child work routines, then would shift the work-school combination toward schooling only. Their policy also calls for joint provision of support to home enterprises and enrollment incentives--especially for girls. The Policy of Analysis of Child Labor is a meticulous study of a major human rights issue with far-reaching policy implications.
