Book Description

What do you get when an ex-NASA engineer and statistician turned bestselling how-to-writer decides to move aboard a boat? The Liveaboard Report, a statistical analysis filled with bar charts and pie graphs that quantifies what works and what doesn't for a representative sampling of liveaboard boaters. Charlie Wing interviewed 71 liveaboards of all sorts, and asked them 400 questions about what most aspiring liveaboards want to know: What does it cost? What boat should I get? Is refrigeration worth the hassle? What anchor works best? This book is different from other liveaboard guides. This author doesn't say, "Listen up--I am an expert, and this is the way to do it." Instead, he says "I asked this question of 71 crews with 277 collective years' experience living aboard. Three percent said X, 20 percent said Y, and 77 percent said Z. Let that be your guide."

Interesting, if you are an economist or if you operate like Bill Clinton and base each decision on an opinion poll. Hurry, someone take this guy's graph program away.

2 out of 5 stars Why didn't you tell me?.......2005-07-27

It would have been nice to know that this book had zero zip snot to do with power boats before I bought it. Also, I find the author's info a bit suspect when he says he talked to one owner of a 42 foot power boat who spent $13000.00 a month on maintenance alone and based his entire decision not to include anything but sail boats based on this one interview.

What the author does have is a love for bar and pie charts with a few actual graphs thrown in to break up the (intense) monotony. The problem is that none of them are in color so in some cases you have to try to differentiate between two shades of black. Had I picked this book up in a store I would have politely put it back on the shelf.

The information is way out of date. One referance states that people were waiting for GPS units to drop below $1000!!! And the same section talks about the growing number of people who were getting a VCR.

1 out of 5 stars Methinks this book was written only to generate money for the author.......2005-07-16

I'm truly sorry I bought this book. Filled with worthless information(?).

3 out of 5 stars Useful, but becoming out of date........2004-06-16

I brought this book to assist me in choosing a design for a cruising yacht, and found much useful material.
However some of the material is now dated (1992?), and the surveys appear to have been restricted to the Intercoastal Waterway and near Caribean islands.
A modern update would be appreciated.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent for equipment choices.......2003-11-23

A couple weeks ago I finished reading Charlie Wing's "The Liveaboard Report / A Boat Dweller's Guide to What Works and What Doesn't". In it he interviews 71 sail-boaters -- these are cruisers for the most part, and not your weekend-warrior racer types.

Anyway, the author provides pie charts and bar graphs of the responses for a gazillion questions a beginner might have. The premise was, what would he (CW) like to know before investing in various systems and goodies. What works so to speak, planned for improvements, along with what they would change if money were no object. I found it interesting. It also had a small section on budgeting/budgets.

One thing which struck me (and he) was that of those with refrigeration, those with engine driven systems were not happy. The problem (if memory serves me) is that folks aren't real pleased to run their engine for an hour a day to charge the system, and cruisers with other power sources for their units were more satisfied.

You know, I too have read those wonderful stats of the engine driven units... but I don't know that running an engine (wear and tear) for an hour a day is going to make me a happy cruiser. It's the 'little things' -- my budget will be limited, therefore it is critical that I learn as much as possible pre-purchase so my choices can be wiser, one hopes! ;)

You might consider the book... it opened my eyes. For instance, we read so much about SSBs and the like, but in the book, universally VHF was aboard -- and not so much the SSB. I'm going to take another look through my copy this evening (taking notes) and then upload it to my website.

"The Liveaboard Report" is worth a look, though I don't know if I'd want to keep it aboard. It's more a Guide for good decision-making rather than a book you'd need forever.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent textbook that complements a shop manual perfectly.......2007-09-14

I've always been interested in cars but never knew very much about what was under the hood other than the very basics. All I'd previously done to my cars is top off any fluids, change burned out bulbs and change flat tires. So, I finally decided to learn about cars and do some maintenance myself which led to this book. It took me a full year to read completely (maybe 2 months actually reading) but with a new baby and a move to a new house mixed in, I think I did pretty well! I was very serious about learning and that is almost a requirement as this book is very detailed and needs to be studied in many areas to really understand the concepts, especially if you have nothing else to go on.

This is a multi-semester text book intended for students in an auto shop class that covers all automotive systems from engine internals to wiring to air conditioning. Everything is covered in detail with multiple designs of components covered where appropriate.

My only complaints are that many times the text references figures that are on the next page so there's a lot of flipping back and forth. Also, some illustrations are a little difficult to make out to really visualize a complex part while some exploded views (many direct from manufacturers) are so overly detailed that the important information discussed in the text is lost.

These are small gripes though as the few gaps left from a few sections with bad drawings can be supplemented with an internet image or animation from sites like howstuffworks.com. These really help with things like differentials and transmissions.

Otherwise, armed with the knowledge in this book you will have no problem understanding any shop manual and doing most auto maintenance yourself. Where the Haynes manual you buy at the auto parts store goes over your specific car and what bolts to loosen to fix whatever and the torque required when you bolt it back together, this book goes into much more detail on all systems in a more general but complete way. It doesn't assume you know any of the basics. The layout is pretty good too. Things are broken up so you don't have a lot of very detailed chapters all bunched up like engine internals, carburetors and transmissions. They are seperated by chapters like Tool identification and use, electricity fundamentals and wheel alignment. The best part is how everything builds on previous chapters or sections. For example, the engine internals section starts with just a piston in a cylinder, then they add valves, then cooling, then timing for those valves, etc until all the major components are added to the final engine drawing.

I can't say enough good things about this book. It's obviously a mature work (previous edition copyrights go back to 1963!) and I can't see much that can be improved. So buy this book, a service manual for your car, a jack and some tools from Sears and do your own work and be able to knowledgeably discuss more complex procedures with your mechanic when it comes to that. Also find a forum on the internet for your car (such as automotiveforums.com) for help troubleshooting.

5 out of 5 stars Good book for someone wanting to learn the trade.......2006-12-13

I am a beginner mechanic, this book is helpful in explaining how a vehicle works. It shows you many types of engines, there parts and how they work together, plus it shows there subsystems. trans/clutch/axle/air/heat and so on.

5 out of 5 stars Patent Attorney.......2004-12-13

I am new patent attorney working on patent applications related to the automotive industry. I was looking for a great book that was easy to understand and had tons of diagrams. I have found it!!!!

5 out of 5 stars This is a must for any real car enthusiast!.......2004-07-07

Reading 'Auto Fundamentals' is like taking a college Auto Tech class at your own leasure! Pretty much every question you have about the fundamental automotive systems WILL be answered by the time you finish this textbook. This is an absolute must-read for anyone looking to get into an automotive field, no matter what branch. Plenty of pictures (with thier own accompanying explanations) are placed throughout the book to give you plenty of visual aides to go along with the text. Although this is an excellent read, there are a few parts of the book that can overwhelm you (eg. automatic transmissions/transaxles and power steering systems we're so over my head I had to skip those chapters). The author goes into extreme detail at the beginning of the book, but that detail kind of tapers off near the end. Not so much that you won't be able to comprehend what your reading, but enough that it may get a little frustrating to read. I'm still giving this 5 stars though, it more than deserves it for it's wide variety of content and (for the most part) clarity.

5 out of 5 stars This book is just incredible.......2003-09-08

I purchased this book to gain a better understanding of the inner workings of engines. I was a bit hesitant at first because of the somewhat high price tag, but after reading only the first part of the book, the amount of knowledge I have gained is priceless. The book is incredibly detailed but everything is explained quite clearly and in easy to understand laymans terms. The authors have taken a very technical engineering subject and have successfully made it enjoyable to read. The abundance and clarity of diagrams and technical cut-away drawings in the book is astounding. Everytime I turn the page I found myself saying 'Wow!', then spending 10 minutes looking at all the cool pictures before I begin reading. If you are thinking about becoming a do-it-yourself mechanic or just want to know anything and everything about the workings of automobiles, this book is excellent.

For the beginning watercolor floral painter there is no better guide than Joan Hansen's FLORAL SCENES IN WATERCOLOR. This inexpensive, beautifully illustrated, large format book takes you through all of the steps from basic composition to the many watercolor techniques used for creating texture and color balance. The book is well written, concise and easy to follow. As a watercolor instructor it is the first floral painting book I recommend. Interested artists will find no better guide.

                        Book Description

The September 11 terrorist attacks, the Chernobyl nuclear accident, Hurricane Andrew, and the Kobe earthquake are all recent examples of large-scale disasters that have taken a massive toll in human lives, wealth, and property. They have disrupted vital systems such as transport and energy supplies and spilled over into neighboring as well as distant regions. They have also generated widespread anxiety, and in some cases created deep-seated public mistrust of government's ability to protect its citizens.

This book is based on a report prepared in 2003 by a multidisciplinary team of experts from inside and outside the OECD. It examines the economic and social impacts of past large-scale disasters and draws a number of key lessons for the future. Its focus is on improving our ability to prevent disasters, and on restoring trust and securing recovery in their aftermath.

From the author: This paper examines the relationship between the legal system and banking development and traces this connection through to long-run rates of per capita GDP growth, capital stock growth, and productivity growth. The data indicate that countries where the legal system (1) emphasizes creditor rights and (2) rigorously enforces contracts have better-developed banks than countries where laws do not give a high priority to creditors and where enforcement is lax. Furthermore, the exogenous component of banking development--the component defined by the legal environment--is positively and robustly associated with per capita growth, physical capital accumulation, and productivity growth.

                                    Book Description

This unique work provides a comprehensive and detailed analysis of international environmental legal principles and concepts, as well as public policy criteria of direct relevance to Multilateral Development Bank (MDB) operations in developing member countries. The study describes the international legal and public policy underpinning MDB's pursuit of sustainable development as a strategic development objective which is key not only to the quality of life of inhabitants of the countries concerned, but also to global economic prosperity. The bulk of legal rules, standards and guidelines, as well as of public policy notions, are reduced in this volume to a set of operationally meaningful principles and concepts for multilateral development banking. The book draws from a vast range of source materials and extends from international conventional law (multilateral, bilateral), customary legal principles, Agenda 21 and other formally non-binding instruments or documents, to practices and standards of international financial institutions. The issues addressed include accountability and empowerment (which include access to information, environmental impact assessment, and public participation); the social impact of MDB operations (such as involuntary resettlement, treatment of indigenous populations); the effectiveness of environmental protection measures (such as environmental monitoring and environmental audits); and the impact on certain environmental resources. This thorough and timely overview of the environmental policy objectives and criteria applicable to multilateral development banking will be welcomed by policy-makers, environmentalists, lawyers, scholars, stakeholders in development projects, and many others.

Government decisions are rarely driven solely by the dictates of cost-benefit analyses. Generating good decision making about fiscal support also requires processes for decision making that facilitate good analysis and temper the influence of self-interest. This report sets out a framework intended to help governments make better decisions about giving fiscal support for private infrastructure services and provides some tools to facilitate analysis. Several policies to enhance the collocation of information, incentives, and decisions are proposed: · Giving responsibility to people working on the objective (rather than the instrument or the infrastructure service); · Separating decision making from delivery; · Involving those responsible for costs; · Utilizing decision making forums that emphasize tradeoffs; · Routinely generating information on costs and benefits; · Requiring routine disclosure of information; · Charging for certain types of support; and · Ensuring accountability for decisions.

Investigating the extent to which China has embraced western HRM, this book provides a long-awaited analysis of the changing nature of work, employment, and HRM in Chinese society. With recent radical reforms in workplace welfare and social security provisions, there has been growing interest in the area and this book addresses the most important issues of the day, such as growing inequality in employment, public sector reform, pay systems, and vocational training. The book includes first-hand research and case studies, as well as secondary data and official statistics, and in doing so presents readers with a truly rounded view.
