Customer Reviews:
The Living Landscape.......2002-10-14
The Living Landscape has made a lasting contribution to ecological planning through its detailed documentation of this planning process and thoughtful comparison of the process's application in case studies. Dr. Steiner demonstrates in his book that ecological planning is just not a static plan-making process, but rather a dynamic process that requires consistent and meaningful input from stakeholders. In addition, he sees plan-making as a process that has implications for different scales of the environment, from the nation to the neighborhood. He stresses that the ecological planning process does not end when the plan is finished, but rather the process continues through the linkage of planning concepts to physical design. Given the strengths of this book, it is an essential volume for the library of any professional or student in the disciplines of the built environment and environmental management.
A Unique and Useful Contribution.......2002-05-06
It is a rare planning book that outlines a detailed process for guiding landscape change in a deliberate and ecologically sound manner. The Living Landscape accomplishes this in a robust, clear and convincing way. The second edition improves on the first by including more landscape design information, updating case studies, and deepening the planning method (for instance, by including more on the use of Geographic Information Systems). The liberal use of cases is a strong asset of the book; each step in the ecological planning process is illustrated and explained by way of 'stories' from real places around North America. The Living Landscape is useful reading for students and practitioners in landscape architecture, architecture, environmental planning and natural resource management.
From a landscape for living to a living landscape.......2002-05-05
The second edition of The Living Landscape has came out nine years after the first. The first, in fact, was published in 1991, it received an ASLA Merit Award for Communications in 1993, and then it was translated into Italian in 1994, where it was very well received among scholars and students of planning as well as in the schools of architecture throughout the country.
The very first difference between the two editions is the publishing series. The first did not form part of a series while the second is now in the McGraw-Hill "Professional Architecture" series. The Professional Architecture series is devoted to giving helpful tools to practitioners who are on the field and The Living Landscape provides a very wide set of how-to and why-to-do-it instructions, where-to-keep information, and best practices examples to learn from, organized around an eleven-step Ecological Planning Model. I consider The Living Landscape a refined, high-level professional handbook devoted to enhance the toolbox of any present or future planning practitioners.
The Living Landscape II edition, as was the first, is built around a scheme of eleven steps called "Ecological Planning Method" briefly presented in the first chapter and used as a step-by-step pattern to guide readers into the organization of a planning process. The "Ecological Planning Method" is a framework for presenting information to decision-makers, and to display "a common language, a common method among all those concerned about social equity and ecological parity" (p. 9). The approach to planning presented by Steiner is innovative for two reasons. The first is the incorporation of ecology in planning - briefly "the use of biophysical and sociocultural information to suggest opportunities and constraints for decision making about the use of the landscape" (pp. 9-10). The second reason is the author's stress on the citizen's involvement in almost every step of his method. These two issues, even if they are the prime themes of the book, are prudently embedded into the body of the full text. Ecology and citizen involvement are the leitmotif of the entire book which is composed of a precise combination of techniques and tools presentation, useful references to literature, light - but effective - revocations of the theoretical frameworks on the issues, and application examples deriving from real plans or projects.
The eleven-step Ecological Planning Model goes from the identification of problems and opportunities (step 1) and the establishment of goals (2) to inventories and analysis at regional (3) and local level (4). It proceeds with the realization of detailed studies (5) and the definition of planning concepts (6). The landscape plan (7) follows and it is directly assessed and criticized by citizens (8), who are involved and educated along the whole process-phasing. Design exploration (9) comes next and the study of the implementation of the plan and projects (10) precedes the administration (11) that is the last step of the model. The Ecological Planning Model is linear in its descriptions (the book chapters - excluding the introduction and the conclusion - are devoted to deepen every single step, with some minor exceptions), but the steps are strongly interactive. In the graphic scheme of the model (p. 11), solid and dashed arrows between the steps emphasize the necessity and the opportunity of feedback and retroactions in order to monitor the previous results.
Citizen involvement is the center of the model. Almost every step is addressed to inhabitants and a systematic educational and citizen involvement effort occurs throughout the process. The model, between the last step - administration - and the first - problem and/or opportunity identification -, presents a dashed arrow in order to accent that problems and opportunities facing the region and the goals addressed that may be altered by time, occurrences and circumstances.
Compared to the first edition, the structure of the Ecological Planning Model and of the book contents remains unchanged in the second, but the book has some 120 more pages. Graphic design of tables and figures has been enhanced - a four-color page section was added to present the GIS maps of the Desert View Tri-Villages Area (Arizona) and of the Camp Pendleton study area (California), two of the many new examples used along the entire book. New photographs, mostly authored by Steiner, follow the entire text. Sources and references have been updated including recent books and articles on the matters. New examples, as said before, have been included in this edition to present more recent application of techniques and tools explained and illustrated along the text. The final glossary, one of the many useful tools of the book, has been enlarged with 46 new entries bringing the total to 350.
Ecological plannnig has a future with this effort ........2002-04-14
I am a graduate student in landscape ecological planning. I would recommend Dr. Steiner's book for students, professionals and the lay leaders interested in making a difference in their community. The idea of planning is sometimes hard to grasp by communities that are ruled by economics and development, not ecology. Dr. Steiner shows us step by step how to include ecology into communities and how that may give us other alternatives that we may not have considered.
The use of case studies in this book enhances the practical application of ecological planning in real world situations.
I would recommend this book for anyone interested in ecology, planning or being part of your community's future.
Book fails to make the connection.......2002-01-23
I picked up a copy of "the living landscape" at the local library thinking I was on to something interesting. Instead, I found the book to be a rehash of old, simple ideas under the cloak of a "sexy", progressive title. I am a practicing environmental planner and must admit that I was even fooled by the picture on the cover--How in the world is a linear mono-cultural hedgerow of trees that line an walkway even remotely a just symbol of "ecological planning"? The picture seems to satisfy the landscape architect's need to have order-- Ecology is anything but linear or orderly.
I must be fair. The book is well writen and offers students in environmental planning a good introduction to landscape planning with some environmenatl emphasis. However, in my opinion, I don't believe that the book does justice or furthers the progressive concept of "ecological" planning, as defined by the likes of the late Ian McHarg.

Thrill to the adventures of a struggling band of heroes, gathered by an ancient wizard to defeat his corrupt former comrade by wielding the mystic Dragon Arms! Millennia ago, the Dragon Kings held the world in their iron grip, until the most powerful warriors of the age waged a final battle against these monsters and freed humanity. To defeat these tyrants, five legendary heroes have been assembled by the ancient wizard Anrack. He has instructed them in the use of the powerful, ageless weapons known as the Dragon Arms. But even these new champions and their magical armaments may not be enough to topple the indestructible might of these timeless masters of death!

GORGEOUS EPIC FANTASY!.......2006-04-27
Dragon Arms by David Hutchison begins an epic, Manga-stlye heroic fantasy in the grandest traditions of Tolkien, Jordan, and Leiber. In the opening volume we find a world under they tyranny of Lord Eon and his demonic servants known as the Majin who are seeking to dominate all the free peoples of Lordez. They spread across the land conquering and destroying anyone who dares to oppose them. But there is hope, the legendary wizard Anrack, long thought dead has returned and assembled a group of powerful heroes to oppose Eon and his forces. Among them is Kyoko who wields a many-bladed whip, Stone who was formerly a trusted lieutenant of Eon's but who now champions the cause of good, and the mysterious Naga who is related to the ancient dragon-kin and may hold the key to defeating Eon. The group travel to the ancient temple of Harsi-Kell to find the legendary dragon arms but find the temple already ransacked by Eon and the ancient weapons destroyed.
Starting with the fantastic art, Dragon Arms is a spectacular story. It reprints the first five issues of the regular comic from Antarctic press into Manga format. The action and panels flow beautifully and it's truly a gorgeous book. The combination of heroic fantasy and Manga elements blends quite well. Hutchisons renditions of the terrifying Majin are truly evil and vile, and as pointed out in the story, even more a threat than Eon himself. The story moves briskly and before I knew it I was at the end and wanting more. I look forward to seeing where the story goes from here.

Customer Reviews:
Great fundamental information.......2007-10-14
On a 5 scale I rate this book a 5. This is a fundamentals book on resumes. Don't expect it to blow you away. Don't expect it to really stretch the envelope with new ideas. This is not "Resumes for Rocket Scientists". If you take it as I believe it's intended you will be well satisfied.
"Resumes for Dummies" will give you the base information you need to create or revise your resume in today's environment. The book is organized in a simple and logical way. It's written extremely well. You should find it easy to read and to use. It's full of tips and techniques that you can use immediately.
Best of the Book: I really like Chapter 9 "Passages Resumes for Your Life's Changing Phases". It's really important to sort of tune your resume for any job but it's especially important when you are using your resume - based on experience in one field - to get you a new job in a different field. This chapter will help.
Tie "Resumes for Dummies" with support from a qualified career coach and you'll be in very good shape.
I hope you use "Resumes for Dummies" to help your career management.
A big help!.......2007-07-24
I wasn't sure where to really begin with writing a resume and this book was a big help! I recommend it to anyone who is a beginner with resumes.
AMAZING!.......2007-05-04
I love the book!! It's an insider's look at the ever-changing world of job hunting--Joyce Layne Kennedy really knows her stuff. She takes you step-by-step through the process you should go through to write a perfect resume. And of course it reads with a witty edge that entertains you while you learn!
I love the core resume to the spin-off concept!.......2007-01-06
Hi Joyce, In Chapter 1, you introduce a very easy Core Resume to Spin-off Resume style! This is great! So easy to focus, target and only rewrite about one-third of page ONE! And you are so right, the only way to write and post a resume in this job market is COMPLETELY TARGETED to the job.
5 Top Target Skills !! All of the samples in the book - 48 of them - written and produced by Kathryn Troutman's The Resume Place, Inc., team - are great. The targeting style with the box at the top, targeting text in the resume, are very helpful for resume writers.
Thanks Joyce for an all new, targeted resume book. Everyone needs to STAND OUT IN THEIR EXACT AREA OF EXPERTISE.
Resume for Dummies, Fourth Edition.......2006-03-15
I highly recommend that every job seeker, no matter what your status, read this book. No others will hold a candle to it. I would not be able to describe how much I would be struggling, if it were not for this book. Just take the time to relax, put your feet up and read it from cover to cover. Building my resume came next (I had never done one due to years of service at my previous employer) and I used so many tips in that book while writing it. It actually does a wonderful job of preparing you for all aspects of your job search.

Customer Reviews:
Get started, then move on........2003-06-30
"Cover Letters for Dummies" is a decent introduction to writing the perfect cover letter to land that dream job. You will definitely learn the purpose of cover letter, and how it differs from the resume. Once you get that part, it's time to move on to another book. This book may contain good explanations and theory as to how the hiring process works, but the examples are absolutely useless. Further, the only actual useful information could have been condensed into a one-page summary. The rest of the book is filler. Unless you want to be taken as a fool by potential employers, I suggest that you find another book.
Maybe a little too dummy.......2002-04-10
This is a handy reference especially for those who don't know much about writing cover letters and who haven't ever been to a career counselor. It's also useful for anyone else, though I can't imagine that it's much different from other books on the topic.
The major annoyance I had was with the sample letters that are included, and with some of Joyce Kennedy's suggestions, which seemed more obnoxious than anything. I can see how some employers may find them amusing, but if I were in a human resources department, I would not hire many of the people who wrote these examples.
To be sure, some of the samples are alright, and there is much to learn in the many tips that Kennedy provides. If you're seeking to be a competitive prospective employee, you may find it worthwhile to get this book. I hope, however, that there is another book on cover letters out there with sample letters that are still interesting to read, but more serious and intelligent.
Cover Letters for Dummies.......2001-12-19
I had no idea how I was going to help my friend write a good cover letter until I read your book. The first time I read your book I concentrated on you top ten "do" and "don't do" things for a "red hot cover letter". That list and the examples provided of "cover letters" in your books was a tremendous help.
It is a must book to have for anyone looking to sell themselves to an employer for a job.
A tremendous job hunting resource.......2000-12-07
This is not just a book on cover letters; it's a wealth of knowledge on the entire job-hunting process. Joyce Lain Kennedy has put together a tremendous resource for the current or soon to be job hunter, which is really most of us.
I know people scoff at Dummies books, especially for highly technical subjects, but this book is the perfect format for the vast collection of job-hunting facts, ideas and wisdom in this book. The author does an excellent job of presenting a lot of material in a way that is clear, entertaining and extremely readable.
I highly recommend this book, and liked it so much I went out and bought her other two books, Resumes' and Job Interviews for Dummies, which I will be reviewing as I finish them.
too red-hot!.......1999-11-03
This book is chock full of cutesy icons and useless advice. The author spends far too much time touting her previous book (resumes for dummies) and dispensing annoying catch phrases as opposed to giving solid writing tips. We've recieved letters like those featured in the book and dumped them directly in the trash. Unless you are applying for a sales job at a used car lot, don't bother using the letters in this book.

If your last job search took place more than a year ago, you may be shocked at how widespread online job hunting is today. Pam Dixon reckons that between 40 and 80 percent of employers now search for job candidates online, with millions of jobs being posted via company Web pages and online employment databases. If you know how to use it, the Internet is a magnificent tool for learning what jobs are available, in your field or in fields you may wish to explore, in your neck of the woods or across the country in a region you may not mind relocating to--if only there were a job waiting for you.
Job Searching Online for Dummies is a priceless investment in the job hunt process. Dixon explains new job search trends (such as who is likeliest to succeed in an online job search) and which online job search strategies are most effective. She provides job search engines and professional indexes, discusses résumé privacy, and touches on the tricky issue of whether your current boss may see your résumé online. There are also chapters on formatting an electronic résumé, résumé send-out strategies, how to compose an appropriate electronic cover letter, and doing a bit of pre-interview Internet research, too. Dixon then delves into e-mail protocol, contacting the right people, and using online job databases to your best advantage. There's an Internet directory in back, with 63 pages of worthwhile Web sites, and there's a CD, too, compatible with PC and Mac systems, that contains a clickable list of all the URLs in the directory, an ASCII template for a basic electronic résumé, and BBEdit Lite, a freeware text editor (compatible with Mac OS only) for composing HTML.
Job hunting is still exhilarating, scary, and time-consuming, but if you take advantage of the job search techniques the Internet now offers, the process can be far more efficient and effective. You have nothing to lose, except perhaps the right job. --Stephanie Gold

Customer Reviews:
Great basic info........2002-01-15
When my father handed me this book, I rolled my eyes. As a "downsized" IT professional, I am intimately familiar with recruiters and online job systems, and fully expected this book to rehash what I already knew. It did.
However, it does contain information that is valuable for beginners. Most of the information is right on the money.
Compared to other online job searching books, this one has a lot of good information, so much so that it risks detracting you from your job search (ignore the information about taking the time to convert your resume into HTML and posting it on your own website).
Want the Job of your dreams, BUY THIS BOOK!.......1999-06-12
This book is so well written and helpful 1000 words would not suffice to tell all the good solid advice it includes. Im retiring from the Army, needless to say my job search strategies were 20 years out of date, UNTIL I read this book. Pam taught me how to write a solid resume for the internet, what sites to post it on, and how to respond to the inquiries I received as well as how to choose the best job from all the offers I would get. I followed the instructions and within 72 hours I was flooded with email on specific jobs in the field I was searching for. Hey, this book saved my life, I'm in Korea and having to conduct a job search from overseas is not something I was looking forward to. The book also contained stellar advice on how to prepare for job interviews, how to research a prospect employer, etc etc etc. AND came with a bonus CD. I checked this book out of the library after buying 2 books on the subject (which were nowhere near as good) but today I'm ordering "Job Searching Online for Dummies" to add to my private collection. Thanks Pam for writing such a helpful book.
A Must for Today's Job-hunters!.......1998-07-02
I spent 3 1/2 months job hunting with no success before I got an Internet connection. Now I have my connection and used this excellent book to get myself up to speed on online job searching. Little did I know how significantly the job search game has changed! This book got me up to speed in very short order. It tells you everything you need to know about "keyword" "Plain-text" and "scannable" resumes for use on the web. It also gives good advice on maintaining internet privacy, (how to avoid getting your identity stolen), which job databases to use and which to avoid, how to reformat your resume for resume databases...
I put my resume on one database, e-mailed a few text-only copies in response to online ads, and my telephone hasn't stopped ringing since! This method, fortunately or unfortunately, is the wave of the future.
There is a CD included in the book, but I found enough information within the book that I didn't need to use it.

Customer Reviews:
very helpful on how to approach job interviews.......2005-02-05
Some very helpful tips on how to give a good show. I only wish they had a longer section on suggested answers to common questions.
I love this book, I can't say enough about it!.......2004-12-15
I love this book. It is something I read before every interview, and I am 6 for 6. It does a very good job of giving you an overview of questions to expect during an interview, and also good ways and bad ways to answer those questions. Whether you are preparing for your first interview, or you have been through a million interviews, I think this book is definitely a worthwhile read. I plan to buy a copy of this book for each of my friends who are soon to be in the job search process.
FYI: I am a 20 yo college junior.
