The Nag Hammadi Library was discovered in 1945 buried in a large stone jar in the desert outside the modern Egyptian city of Nag Hammadi. It is a collection of religious and philosophic texts gathered and translated into Coptic by fourth-century Gnostic Christians and translated into English by dozens of highly reputable experts. First published in 1978, this is the revised 1988 edition supported by illuminating introductions to each document. The library itself is a diverse collection of texts that the Gnostics considered to be related to their heretical philosophy in some way. There are 45 separate titles, including a Coptic translation from the Greek of two well-known works: the Gospel of Thomas, attributed to Jesus' brother Judas, and Plato's Republic. The word gnosis is defined as "the immediate knowledge of spiritual truth." This doomed radical sect believed in being here now--withdrawing from the contamination of society and materiality--and that heaven is an internal state, not some place above the clouds. That this collection has resurfaced at this historical juncture is more than likely no coincidence. --P. Randall Cohan
Book Description
This revised, expanded, and updated edition of The Nag Hammadi Library is the only complete, one-volume, modern language version of the renowned library of fourth-century manuscripts discovered in Egypt in 1945.
First published in 1978, The Nag Hammadi Library launched modern Gnostic studies and exposed a movement whose teachings are in many ways as relevant today as they were sixteen centuries ago.
James M. Robinson's updated introduction reflects ten years of additional research and editorial and critical work. An afterword by Richard Smith discusses the modern relevance of Gnosticism and its influence on such writers as Voltaire, Blake, Melville, Yeats, Kerouac, and Philip K. Dick.
Acclaimed by scholars and general readers alike, The Nag Hammadi Library is a work of major importance to everyone interested in the evolution of Christianity, the Bible, archaeology, and the story of Western civilization.
Customer Reviews:
Fascinating theology, but don't expect much historical Jesus.......2007-10-02
The Gnostic writings of Nag Hammadi are fascinating but badly misunderstood, thanks largely to sensationalist media reports and books like the Da Vinci Code.
On the whole, these writings aimed not to preserve history, but to reinterpret Jewish and Christian theology, often from the foundation up. So, for example, many Gnostics believed that this world was a horrible mistake created by a demigod who was too stupid to realize that he wasn't the real God.
The stories here of Jesus and the disciples (including Mary Magdalene) are fictional accounts used as vehicles for these theological views. To call them "fiction" is not a value judgment (many fictional elements are likely present in the Gospel of John as well), but simply an observation of how these thinkers (writing primarily in the second through fourth centuries) shared their ideas.
As a result, they don't, unfortuntately, tell us much about the historical Jesus. The Gospel of Thomas (included in this volume) may include some genuine sayings of Jesus, but this is hotly debated. And anyway, on the whole, Matthew, Mark, and Luke remain the best historical evidence that we have.
To be clear: those seeking to find historical dirt on the apostles, or accounts of Jesus marrying Mary Magdalene, will be disappointed. But if you don't mind wading through cryptic texts, buy this volume (or the newer volume of these texts called "The Nag Hammadi Scriptures"), and begin with the Apocryphon of John or the Hypostasis of the Archons. After several reads, a fascinating theological world emerges.
religion.......2007-09-17
A reference book on religious history. For those who are enlightened
and educated on Judaism and Christianity, because this is to deep for
the average lay person.
Great book.......2007-03-08
This book is difficult to read, but seems to be very well written and researched. Like many ancient texts, it may take years to read and begin to understand.
The Nag Hammadi Library.......2007-02-22
I find this book to be very interesting. You can see why much of it was left out of the Bible. It gives you a different view of what might of gone on in the past.
2 or 3 interesting and inspiring tractates.......2007-02-19
i have not read all of the tractates (gnostic books/papyri) in this book carefully, though have skimmed most of it and find a pretty high degree of consistency in what the different tractates are saying.
from a gnostic angle there would seem to be the first thought or voice, which gave rise to father, mother and son, but the first thought can be reffered to as the Father with a capital F... however this father is 'she' who is the original force in this universe. there is talk of the womb. this form of 'christianity' would perhaps be more acceptable to a woman scared off from conventional patriarchal christianity. however certain aspects of the gnostic literature as just as patriarchal as those found in the bible. for example, in the Gospel of Thomas, a woman is encouraged to become a man, that she may be saved. no scripture in my opinion is ever going to be perfect, but all point us towards 'God', or the reality of that which is beyond, if one is averse to useing the word God.
some very interesting little snippets that caught my eye...
"how could virgin have conceived through holy spirit, when the holy spirit is female?"(paraphr.)
"Joseph was the carpenter that made the cross upon which his son was crucified".(paraphr.)
not that one should get caught up in these details, though im sure some people will.
i love the gospel of Thomas, though much of this material is probably parallel to and almost identical with the theoretical Q manuscript from which the four gospels drew source of jesus wisdom sayings, and many, or even most of the wise sayings in the gospel of thomas are found in the new testament, there are two or three significant sayings that arnt in the new testament.
there is a non-dualistic emphasis on making the high as the low and the inside as the outside (in gist, not literally). the passage which blew my mind comes near the beginning of this gospel, was...
"if you are told that the kingdom of heaven is in the sky, birds will be seen, but if you are told that the kingdom of heaven is in the sea, fish will be seen" this impeccable logic can be applied to jesus statement: "seek and ye shall find", he then goes on to say that there is an objective truth, saying something like "the kingdom of heaven is neither in sky nor sea, but within you."(paraphr.)
for me the Thomas Tractate was a highlight, we are lucky to have this copy of the gospel found in an egyptian rubbish tip in nag hamadi in the 1940s, as far as i am aware only one other copy of it existed prior to this find.
i enjoyed the trimorphic protennoia which is more overtly gnostic than Thomas, it is beautifully composed and speaks in female metaphores almost as much as maleness metaphores in relation to the divine, talk of jesus comes out in this tractate, though it would seem he is the 'first thought' given to the 'yaltaboth' in the image of his own son, whilst infact being the arch principle (thought/Father) in disguise.
i can see that there is probably much room for debate over terms and roles of persons in gnosticism, this is because there are simply so many complex and beautiful names and persons mentioned, total consistency with such complexity is nigh on impossible.
'thunder the perfect mind' is rather beautiful too, and expect that anyone calling himself a gnostic would love this piece of writing. it talks of the divine as both cruel and kind, lover and hater, mother and husband. some beautiful complexity and paradox in this tractate.
i cant remember what its called... i think something like exhortations of Jesus, but this though damaged is also very wise and its inspiring to think that here i might be reading the words of jesus and some of his teaching that never entered the bible. his exhortation to find the root of all things, is like that in the Tao to always seek out the ultimate in whatever one does (though one stopp just short of attaing it lest the blade become blunt.) "he who sees reveals"!
the "tripartite tractate" is long, though worth a more careful read, in order to gain some understanding of gnosticism.
there are various apocalypses and other books detailing how jesus has spoken (post resurection), but i was more interested in digging out the actual words of jesus prior to his death.
i have wondered where gnosticism came from whilst reading this, it is not the same as hermetic material in the corpus hermeticum and is pretty consistent with the teaching of a once major or popular belief. some of the material in the nag hamadi library refers to the valentinian sophia's (she who is the personification of wisdom) daughter Achamoth, valentinianism is one of the heracys that ireneus wrote against in his work 'heracys'(or it might have been 'against heracys'). funnily enough, had ireneus never written that work, we would possibly not know much about valentinianism today. among the guanche tribe of the canary islands, some still worship the mother 'achamoth', for some who have converted she has been replaced by veneration for mary, jesus' mother.
all in all, not light reading, but some interesting and lovely material in this ancient library if you wish to read it and have an interest in things of the distant past.
it would do many christians good to realize that the bible does not contain all the words of jesus, which were so many that even the whole world could not contain them!
love, flakey xxx

Ancient and enlightening.......2006-01-13
This collection of texts gives a fascinating view of early Christian texts and views, particularly in light of the fact that these were not the writings that made it into the mainstream of church and biblical canonical development, but rather were influential in an underground, almost subversive way, in much of ancient and oriental Christianity -- were it not for the existence of texts such as these, indeed, we would not have the canon of the Bible which we have today (the political motivations behind deciding which books belonged in the Bible and which books didn't owe largely to texts such as those in the Nag Hammadi Library).
'This volume...marks the end of one stage of Nag Hammadi scholarship and the beginning of another. The first stage was concerned with making this library of texts available; the second stage has been characterised by the discussion and interpretation of the texts.'
This book represents an advance in both translation and analysis; this is part of the canon of the Gnostic sect, which saw more orthodox Christianity (from which Eastern Orthodox, Roman Catholic, and Protestant bodies derive) as the ones who were heretical.
'The Nag Hammadi library also documents the fact that the rejection was mutual, in that Christians described there as 'heretical' seem to be more like what is usually thought of as 'orthodox'.'
Gnosticism was ultimately eliminated from mainstream Christianity, save the occasional resurgence of underground and spiritual movements. Of course, Gnosticism was not an exclusively Christian-oriented phenomenon: many of the texts refer to Hebrew Scriptures only, and the question of Jewish Gnosticism is discussed by Robinson.
The Dead Sea Scrolls (of which these texts are NOT a part, despite the fact that they often get cited and analysed as part of that body of documents) shed light on the pluralistic nature of first century Judaism; the idea that there was a sect primarily of Jewish gnostics which had little or no knowledge or regard of Christianity (still at this point one sect of many, particularly in cosmopolitan centres such as Alexandria) is not a strange one.
The Nag Hammadi library consists of twelve books, plus eight leaves of a thirteenth book. There are a total of fifty-two tracts. These are now kept in the Coptic Museum in Cairo, and, as the name suggests, are written in Coptic, although it is clear that the texts are Coptic translations of earlier Greek works. Coptic is the Egyptian language written with the Greek alphabet; there are different dialects of Coptic, and the Nag Hammadi library shows at least two. They were found in codex form (book form rather than scroll form). They were discovered in the mid 1940s, just a few years prior to the discovery of the first Dead Sea Scrolls (another reason for the combination of the texts in the public imagination).
Included in these texts are The Gospel of Thomas, The Gospel of Philip, The Gospel of Truth, The Gospel of Mary and other gospel contenders (alas, in fragmentary form--the translation in this volume however is the complete Nag Hammadi text). The Gospel of Thomas has perhaps been the highest profile text from Nag Hammadi; it has been translated and commented upon extensively, particularly in modern scholarship which discusses gospel development.
'Whoever find the interpretation of these sayings will not experience death.'
This gospel does not correspond to the narrative form with which modern readers are familiar; it is a collection of sayings (one modern scholar argues that the victory of the four canonical gospels was a victory of style, rather than substance).
This gospel also helps illuminate some of the early struggles in church formation (why exactly did it go from a house-based, relatively gender-neutral organisation to a male-exclusive-hierarchical model?).
Simon Peter said to them, 'Let Mary leave us, for women are not worthy of life.' Jesus said, 'I myself shall lead her in order to make her male, so that she too may become a living spirit resembling you males. For every woman who will make herself male will enter the kingdom of heaven.'
Other writings include various Acts of apostles, pieces of wisdom literature, parables and stories, most of which have some basis in Hebrew scripture or Christian scripture traditions.
The afterword, by Richard Smith, traces the idea of gnosticism through medieval and renaissance writers, through the enlightenment up to the modern day, in philosophy, theology, culture and the arts. From Blake to Gibbons to Melville to modern motion pictures, Gnostic ideas permeate many works, even before the Nag Hammadi library was available for study and contemplation.
'A quite self-conscious incorporation of Nag Hammadi texts into a science fiction novel appeared in Harold Bloom's 1979 novel The Flight to Lucifer: A Gnostic Fantasy. In it the reincarnated Valentinus and his companions fly to a planet called Lucifer. Quoting our gnostic texts, the heroes wage a violent battle against Saklas, the Demiurge who is worshipped in his 'Saklaseum'. Bloom, more successful as an interpreter of literature, later confessed that The Flight to Lucifer reads as though Walter Pater were writing Star Wars. But, then, so does much ancient gnostic writing.'
This is a wonderful collection, a truly fascinating view of texts that shared the religious stage with the proto-canonical Biblical texts. It gives insight into the varieties of early Christianity and Judaism. And it makes for interesting reading.

The second edition in Rita Street's popular series that highlights the best of commercial, student, and industrial animation is an inspiring collection of contemporary computer animation. Although the vast majority of content in The Best New Animation Design 2 is computer-generated 3-D animation, there is also a sprinkling of traditional cartoon-looking work, and even some motion graphics pieces.
Divided into various sections covering commercials, films, television, games, and student work, this glossy, lavishly illustrated book features work of all kinds and styles. Especially handy is a directory listing of studios, complete with street addresses (but not e-mail addresses or URLs).
Most of the people involved in any one production are acknowledged, with the names of the producing studio, the client or agency, the main directors and producers, and the software that was used listed individually. The majority of spots feature a paragraph or two that outline the process that was involved or the new technique that was developed for the spot.
The only problem is that there is no actual way to see the animation. An accompanying CD-ROM containing QuickTime versions of the clips--or, better yet, a DVD--would have made this magnificent gallery book educational, too. --Mike Caputo
Book Description
The Best New Animation Design 2 features over three hundred examples of the latest and most innovative animation work from the great and soon-to-be-great animators in the world. Captions include infomration about the creators, the software and hardware used, and in-depth desciptions of techniques. This volume includes both single images and series of images, all in full color. With stills from feature films, short films, commercials, games, and student work, this volume is a comprehensive showcase of a range of genres and styles. The Best of New Animation Design 2 is a fun and essential resource for anyone working in the animation industry or anyone interested in digital animation design.

Exceptional CG Animation Sampler.......1998-10-05
An exceptional tabletop book highlighting some of the most exciting and up-and-coming CG companies and schools in the industry. The wide variety of content illustrated is methodically broken up in well designed chapters covering commercials, films, television, games, and student work. Descriptions of how images are created demonstrates matter of factly that its not the meat of the machinery or the software tool but the artist in motion that makes an exceptional animation.

Customer Reviews:
Sorcerer Hunters is GREAT!.......2001-08-09
This series is perhaps one of the greatest mangas of all. And Book 3 is the best so far!
Funny but...........2001-05-14
This series is hilarious, but but but....there are some very sick parts, like Tira's and Chocolate's um, outfits. Still, Akahori sticks great humor into the cracks, not to mention a little romance, the things that make every story (manga or otherwise) great. The plot can get a little repetitive, but after a while, more and more surprises appear. Maybe not up there with Rumiko Takahashi's work, but still pretty great.

"There's no such thing as a mature business," only a growth business, write leading business consultants Ram Charan and Noel M. Tichy. Every Business Is a Growth Business is a step-by-step manual for turning any company into an expanding company. The book is packed with real-world examples and key concepts for executives to get their businesses on an upward trajectory.
Charan and Tichy assert that growth requires sticking to two principles: "strategy from the outside in" and "changing the genetic code." The first means putting yourself in your customers' shoes and asking what are their needs and how are they changing. From this perspective, a company can redefine its market and come up with creative ways to expand demand. The second principle, changing the genetic code, means revamping the corporate culture so that a new mindset for growth can thrive. As anyone who has ever worked in a company knows, corporate culture is a hard thing to overhaul. The book gives concrete steps to make that happen; sometimes it requires whole new leadership.
Charan, who has been on the faculty of the Harvard Business School and Northwestern University, and Tichy, a professor at the University of Michigan Business School, speak from experience. They've advised companies such as Royal Dutch/Shell and Mercedes-Benz. One of their heroes is the late Roberto Goizueta of Coca-Cola. When Goizueta took over, the company was on cruise control. It dominated the U.S. soft- drink industry--a market that many experts believed was mature with nowhere to grow. Under conventional thinking, Coca-Cola was maxed out: it would do well just to defend each tenth of a percent of market share against archrival PepsiCo. But in the 1980s, Goizueta framed the question of market share in a different way. Goizueta got his top executives to see that globally, Coca-Cola accounted for less than 2 ounces of the 64 ounces of fluid that each of the world's 4.4 billion people drank on average every day. In one simple stroke, he redefined the market and opened vast new areas of opportunity for his company. Coca-Cola became an immensely successful growth company under his leadership. Similar stories about Compaq, Citibank, and other companies abound. Every Business Is a Growth Business is an inspiring and practical book for business leaders looking to grow their company. --Dan Ring
Amazon.com Audiobook Review
Everyone wants growth, coauthor Noel Tichy explains on this audiocassette, but how many businesses are truly geared toward that end? At a time when the business cycle demands growth--or businesses risk death--but when so many businesses have already grown beyond anyone's wildest expectations, it's hard for companies not to circle the wagons and protect what they've already gained. If you can get past Tichy's somewhat droning delivery and his excessive use of "think-out-of-the-box"-level clichés and buzzwords, you'll find the secrets to continual growth for your company. Or, if you're an investor, you'll get insights into why some companies keep growing while others stagnate, and thus learn new ways to choose the best companies to stake your retirement funds on. (Running time: three hours, two cassettes) --Lou Schuler
Book Description
What's the number one item on every company's agenda?
Profitable Growth.
Every Business Is a Growth Business is your one-stop guide to making profitable growth happen. It's a radical and refreshing source of ideas, inspiration, and common sense, all based on the unparalleled experience and access of Ram Charan and Noel Tichy.
Charan and Tichy have worked with some of the world's leading executives--people such as Jack Welch of GE, Eckhard Pfeiffer of Compaq, Larry Bossidy of Allied Signal, John Reed of Citigroup, Dick Brown of Cable & Wireless, Alex Trotman and Jacques Nasser of Ford, and the senior management of Coca-Cola--who have transformed their companies into profitable growth machines. Every Business Is a Growth Business is a distillation of what the authors and these unique leaders have learned about profitable growth:
If your business isn't growing sustainably and profitably, it's dying.
Any business can grow profitably. There is no such thing as a mature business.
A company grows because growth is in the corporate mindset, created by the company's leaders.
The mindset of growth starts at the top, but it must reach all the way to the bottom.
Sustainable growth is profitable and capital-efficient.
"Broadening your pond," changing your company's genetic code, developing a growth strategy from the outside in, and other unique ideas.
Every Business Is a Growth Business includes inside accounts of how GE Medical, Allied Signal, Compaq, Citibank, Reynolds and Reynolds, Praxair, and GE Capital developed profitable growth strategies. It includes "The Handbook for Growth," a highly practical guide that will be an immense help as you and your team develop your company's profitable growth strategy.

Growing even the best businesses.......2007-04-06
The authors describe how great businesses redefine themselves and think from the outside in to expand and to conquer stagnation. There is a series of worksheets at the end which test the reader to see how you thing which was helpful.
Great Title,.. borrow from library instead.......2006-12-19
The title of this book caught my eye and I thought I would learn something profound. Quite frankly, there isn't really anything new here. The basic premise of the book is to understand customers needs or create needs and find a way to fulfill those needs in a profitable way. The book doesn't get into specifics but sites several examples of CEOs growing their respective companies. In general, those sources of growth were simply this..
1.Natural growth, where the market for what you make is strong and expanding
2.Gaining market share through low cost - high productivity growth, rapid cycle times, high asset turnover
3.Proprietary or patented technology
4.Highly-developed distribution channels that you've built over time
5.Opening new markets for your existing products - for example, globalization
6.Gaining power in the marketplace via acquisitions, alliances, vertical integration
7.Expanding your pond
8.Resegmenting your markets
9.Moving into adjacent segments
Ofcourse, the book goes into greater detail about each of the above, if you don't understand it in one sentence.
Main focus of book is to view your company from the outside in,..
1. How can I identify or create needs?
2. How can I meet them?
3. How fast can I meet them?
In essence, look at needs as the drivers of change
Pretty common sense stuff don't you think?
This is why I don't highly recommend this book. Its probably best to just borrow it from the library. You save money ;)
Every Leader should read this...then read again!.......2002-04-12
This is one of my favorite leadership books by two authors with whom I have a great deal of respect for their advice. The premise of the book it that by looking at the entire business landscape affecting your clients, there are larger opportunities in which to solve the client's CEO issues beyond the immediate customer orders. Written with real world examples, some of which were first hand consulting jobs by the authors, the examples are detailed and written so you can relate them to your own work.
I have applied these principles in my own professional work and find the concepts very useful in business growth development efforts. In almost every growth opportunity development session with employees, collegues and clients, the going in premise is that there is not enough budget or too limited a market, thus preventing us from pursuing a given opportunity. Applying the author's concepts to creating the expanded view of the opportunity almost always proves to incite a bigger picture for everyone.
The book may require better book bindings because I refer back to it so often that I will one day wear out the bindings!
Read and Expand the Pond! Highly Recommended.
A Good Read!.......2001-03-03
Ram Charan and Noel M. Tichy make the case that no company, even a very large corporation, should think of itself as a mature company or as part of a mature industry. If you look at the market broadly and take your customer's perspective, you will always find room for growth. First, look at your customers' changing needs and think of how your company can expand beyond its current market. Then, expand that approach throughout the company. The basic message may sound familiar, but Charan and Tichy bring a strong how-to approach to their directions for implementing it in your company. We at getAbstract.com appreciate the utility of their mix of examples, graphs, charts, and workbook, which should prove helpful to executives and company owners.
A well-written, very practical recipe for growth and change........1999-03-01
I found this book to be one of the best I have read on the topics of growth and change in some time. This book is devoid of the psychological "fluff" that permeates many other books in this genre. It reads like a practical recipe to be followed by those commited to growth and change. Not at all unlike Welch's annual letters to the shareholders of GE. Whereas the annual letters of others companies drone on and on about what was, surrounded by the fluff of what can be, Welch's letters read like a master plan for action, which can be understood and driven to all levels of the company.
The authors define "desirable" growth from the perspective of shareholders as capital efficient, profitable growth. They then describe a framework for "growing the pond you fish in". Next, they point out the necessity of changing the "genetic code" of the organization so that growth is pursued by leaders at all levels in the organization. They describe a framework for producing this change in the genetic code of the organization. This framework is primarily based on a "teachable point-of-view" developed by the leadership, and constantly reinforced and reiterated through various carefully designed "operating mechanisms". The teachable point-of-view consists of key business ideas, values, emotional energy, and "edge" (on tough calls).
I've read this book twice already, and may read it again. I've started to implement the methodology in my company...so far, so good.

Book Description
The book as the subject of a distinct historical discipline dates from the landmark publication of L'Apparition du livre by Lucien Febvre and Henri-Jean Martin in 1958. In this further contribution to his pathbreaking work with Febvre, eminent French historian Henri-Jean Martin explores the role of the book and book industry in early modern France. Martin begins with a sweeping look at the revolutionary role played by the new technology of printing in Europe of the Renaissance and Reformation. Shifting the focus to France, he then examines the political implications of publishing in the reign of Francis I, including such topics as the founding of royal and university libraries, the role of church-state relations, Richelieu's cultural program, and censorship.
In revealing case studies of Rouen and Grenoble, Martin pinpoints precisely which books were sold and to which social groups, and explains why the initially successful printers of Rouen were eventually forced out of business by the Parisian courts. Martin also casts a discerning eye on early graphic design--from the first illustrated "coffee table" books purchased by the newly rich to the invention of the paragraph to facilitate reading. And he shows how attempts by the French government to suppress and control publication were eventually thwarted by free market forces from Amsterdam and Neufchatel. This is a book that will be of interest to those who study the history of the book, intellectual history of early modern Europe, and the relation between politics and ideas.

Book Description
Fusing aesthetic and economic analyses, Embroidering Lives investigates the lives and work of women in the chikan embroidery industry of Lucknow, India. Richly descriptive and accessibly written, the book explores many important issues in women's studies, anthropology, and urban development today--the impact of purdah (seclusion of women) upon women's work and occupational opportunities, the key role of sub-contractors in home-based industry, the need to understand a handicraft from its makers' point of view, and the role of development agencies and programs.
Customer Reviews:
Review:.......2000-08-22
If your interest in embroidery extends to the anthropolgy of women's work, then this book is one you should read. It's not as accessible as "Women's Work: The First 20,000 Years" but well worth the read. This book is about the contemporary conditions under which embroiderers work in India.
