    1 out of 5 stars hoax.......2002-01-17

This is, like all other Parramon texts, a terrible book.
It's the watch-me-do-it kind, so common in this area.
Gouache is different from the other mediums, so it shouldn't
br mixed with them. Stay away.

1 out of 5 stars Not As Advertised.......2001-10-09

Like so many who write books on art, this author doesn't cover the subject as promised. Gouache IS NOT THE SAME as watercolors in pans, tubes or bottles. If you are going to advertise on the front of your book that you cover the subject of gouache, you should do so in depth, not just lump it in with the rest of the water based paints. I could not find any reference to this medium other than on the cover.

This is also not a complete course on drawing and painting!

    I returned the book.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent resource for team organization.......2000-02-08

I can't believe a student considered this a book for the "feeble-minded". While the introduction quickly covers the basic technologies driving media today, the flowcharting principles and media management guidelines are top notch. This book provides an excellent foundation for getting your multimedia team of designers, programmers and producers off on the right foot. I made it required reading for the members of my staff, and I recommend it to all of my students.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Teacher's Reference and Instruction Book.......2000-01-24

Luppa has been working with Disney,Hewlett Packard and Apple computers and he is currently vice-president of Paramount Digital Entertainment. His book is one of the best publications in this field. He gives examples on interactive teching methods and evaluation criteria, implementation issues etc. (Multimedia workflow models, designing documents, interactive entertainment). A must for techer's and lecturer's, goes beyond the counting of pixels of a desktop-icon. I am lecturer for Interactive Media Design at Temasek Polytechnic in Singapore.

5 out of 5 stars A clear explanation of design strategies for the web........1999-09-14

I found the book to be a clear and simple explanation of the design principles needed to create excellent web sites and CD-ROMs. It was also an exceptional review of instructioanl design strategies for use with interacive video and the internet.

1 out of 5 stars An intro book for the feeble minded college student........1999-06-11

Basically I (we) had to buy this book for a college course on New Media aka N100. Our instructor Mr. Berry thought that it was a good intro book on the subject. Well, he was correct, if your the kind of numbskull who hasn't a clue as to what Multi-Media or New Media is. The book assumes that the reader is for one a complete moron on the subject. In some cases, I myself living in Indianapolis can see how this may be true with the local hayseed population. The author gives a few weak examples on Digital Media here and there but nothing worth wasting your time reading. The author never goes into detail on any given subject. Merely, he throws around a few techno babble words and mentions a few high end programs in a lame'o attempt to impress the reader. One will gain little insight or any usable data from the chapters in this book other than a few easily memorizable how-to steps explained in the later chapters. I learned more on my own by listening to the sometimes tiresome classroom discussions on the subject by my less than intelligent classmates. If an individual really needs to learn more on this subject he or she should pick up a magazine on Multi Media applications. For one it would be cheaper than buying this book.

      Book Description

In this book Kaj Grønbæk and Randall H. Trigg present a set of principles for the design of open hypermedia systems and provide concrete implications of these principles for issues ranging from data structures to architectures and system integration, and for settings as diverse as the World Wide Web and the workplace.

The principles, which cover both hypermedia system processing and data structures, reflect results from decades of hypermedia research, including the popular Dexter hypertext reference model and the authors own extended object-oriented version of the Dexter model. One important principle is the notion of links as first-class objects outside the data. Emerging systems such as HyperWave, Microcosm, and Devise Hypermedia apply this principle to extend the capabilities of the Web. The authors also discuss the management of incomplete and dangling links, time-based media including video and sound, support for collaboration and shared hypermedia structures, worldwide distribution, and integration of third-party applications in open hypermedia systems.

1 out of 5 stars An exercise in pseudo-academic self-indulgence.......2000-01-24

This book was a complete disappointment. I bought it to learn about hypermedia systems. What I read was an exercise in pseudo-academic self indulgence. The authors clearly know their stuff, but equally clearly, they were more interested in showing off their knowledge than in communicating it.

The book is full of references to earlier hypertext/hypermedia systems, but they all assume that the reader is as familiar with them as the authors. The net result is that only someone who is already an expert in this field can make any sense out of anything they are saying.

The book includes a number of "design patterns," but they are of little value. None of them includes a "motivation" section to put the problem into perspective. Nor do they include many of the other sections (applicability, structure, collaborations, etc) that made the "Design Patterns" book so valuable.

Similarly, the object-oriented framework for hypermedia they discuss is presented at only the most abstract level, with little discussion of parctical implementation and use issues.

If you are already an expert in this field and you want an academic discussion of the state of the art, this book might be OK. Otherwise, forget it.

Amazon is getting my copy back. The publisher needs feedback too.

5 out of 5 stars Fun with the early Peanuts gang.......2000-03-31

There Goes the Shutout is from the Classics Peanuts collection by Henry Holt & Co., and contains strips from the early 1950s. Snoopy had big ears and a pointy nose. Lucy is younger (we see her in her crib, and manipulating her parents) and is actually nice to Charlie Brown, although she beats him at checkers. Linus is too young to speak, but he goes "KLUNK" a lot. Violet has pigtails, although there is another character who looks like the Violet we know. It's fun to see the characters looking so young and playing so many games. I own 2 copies of this book, because the first one I got had about 1/4 of the pages from "The Cheshire Beagle" at the beginning (I did not buy it from amazon.com).

The absence of an index makes this reference book difficult to navigate. Also, there seems to be a lot of opinion that needs better substantiation.

                                      Book Description

For Federal employees, the avenue toward protecting their rights is winding and sometimes, full of potholes. Now, the lawyers of Passman and Kaplan --- a noted Washington law firm --- have compiled a guide book that every agency employee will want to consult. This road map steers the employee onto the right path.

Which route, the MSPB or the EEOC? Or maybe both? How much time to file? What if an appeal is necessary? When should the case go straight to the judge? What if a security clearance is revoked? Theres even a separate chapter for postal employees.

Buyer beware, the 1st Edition is 1999, 2nd Edition is 2004 and with most current information. Be careful which one you purchase.

If you work a gov'ment job you need this book. It spells out your rights in dealing with managers and co-workers. Buy it and study it and keep it in your desk at work.

5 out of 5 stars A MUST HAVE FOR ALL FEDERAL EMPLOYEES.......2002-01-29

If you are a federal employee it is imperative to have and refer to this book in order to protect your rights and privileges on and off the job. It contains a great amount of information that is well worth the price. I only wish it were updated (the current edition was printed in 1999), but even that factor is of little import when you consider the benefit of the information it contains. It is thorough, well written and packed with resources. Since it is published by a legal firm that deals with federal employment cases, it is filled with situations that a current federal employee might face on the job.

5 out of 5 stars the holy grail is found!.......2002-01-23

seriously, for those of us fortunate enough(or is that unfortunate enough?) to work for the federal government, this book is by far the most complete reference work available. keep a copy on your desk and watch your supervisor "wince" as you quote your rights verbatim from the text. it is an easy read and thoroughly details rather complex topics and situations relating to any federal employee's work environment. i've used it repeatedly as a reference guide and to plan strategy in my day to day dealings with co-workers and "pea-brained" manager types. i raise my glass to the author.....cheers!

This book is an excellent reference for those who work in the public sector for Uncle Sam. Explains all of the hoops that you have to jump through in order to solve almost any work-related problems.
