A Classic with in a Classic font.......2004-03-25
The author of this book is often cited as the ideal of a Renaissance man, an architect, writer, musician, painter and by some accounts an amazing athlete. This book is based upon the Leone edition, a 1755 English translation of Alberti's original work from the 1400's. Alberta has a very modern succinct style. The chapters include many subchapters to help organize the information. He covers all the aspects of architecture and construction from laying the foundations to the wood joinery in the rafters, to adding the classical facade. He reduces classical design to a series of rules, and proportions, most of which are still followed today when a classical facade is desired. Alberti wrote with one foot in the modern world and one foot in the Renaissance world. He still respects some of the superstitions of his time, but all in all it is a dry book? I would not recommend this book to anybody unless they have a strong desire to learn about classical or Renaissance architecture. The Leone edition also includes many very good plates of his drawings. These drawing are incredible for their time period and more informative than the majority of pictures in most modern architectural books. I became interested in this book because of the plates portraying the construction of construction crane, but the font ruined the book for me. The publisher kept to the original 1755 font style. I'm sure there is some value to this, but it cut the readability factor in half. What could have been an enjoyable book was reduced to slogging through paragraph by paragraph, so (lector caveat) reader bewares?

Book Description
Defining planning as an inherent aspect of human life, Branch presents conclusions reached from 20 previous volumes dealing with different aspects and applications of planning, as well as from actual professional planning experiences. He shows how planning has been a directive force during human evolution and an intrinsic element in human reactions, actions, and activities. Focusing on the existing situation in the United States, he examines the major difficulties confronting the country with respect to planning: problems of communication, poor legislative performance, educational deficiencies, and cultural materialism. Branch presents the fullest explanation available in the literature today of planning and its place in society, and he concludes with an examination of the potentialities and limitations of existing planning in America and its relation to human behavior.
Customer Reviews:
He's Back Again!.......1999-06-24
Dr. Branch was the first person to recieve a PHD in Planning from Harvard, he has had a distinguished career and he keeps on tackling the tough problems facing this nation in planning today. I have not read this book yet because it is not released. Obviously the 5 star rating is bogus but what can you do in this format? I will rate the book when it comes out. I was lucky enough to have Dr. Branch as a professor at USC in 1992 and have remained a fan ever since. He writes in a rich, consise stile that leaves no stone unturned. Here is the discription of his latest book from Praeger's web site:

David Sarnoff Research Center: RCA Labs to Sarnoff Corporation (Images of America: New Jersey)
ASIN: 0521368219 |
Book Description
The story of the RCA VideoDisc is a rare inside look at a company and the way it conducts the complex process of science-based innovation. The author examines how RCA shaped a sophisticated consumer electronics technology in a research and development effort that spanned fifteen years. We see how the company's history, its structure, its technical capability, and its competition all influenced the choices that were made in moving VideoDisc from laboratory to development group to market, and ultimately to withdrawal from the marketplace. Published in hardcover as RCA and the VideoDisc.
Customer Reviews:
Historical Reference for the Design Phase of the CED System.......1999-05-28
The definitive historical reference on the design phase of the CED System. This book was largely researched from 1976 to 1978 as an exercise in applied history. The book deals primarily with this late 70's time frame, although it also contains chapters on early RCA history, VideoDisc on the market, and lessons to be learned from the CED project. This book also discusses other consumer video formats developed, but never marketed by RCA, which include Discpix, Photopix, Holopix, Holotape, and Magtape.

The consequences of failure of vision.......1997-03-18
There is a lot of misinformation spread around about the history of the
videodisc. If you are curious about the facts, check out this book.
It is recommended for all new media designers. It shows the disastrous consequences of failure of vision. In RCA's case, they correctly judged that there was going to be a huge market in consumer video, but it never occurred to them that time shifting, home recording, and program rental would be the
features to drive it. In parallel with the capacitance electronic disc (CED)
they developed a MagTape system. If they had gone to market with MagTape,
there might still be an RCA today.

Book Description
This book focuses on the role of women in the productive structures of a diverse group of third world countries, including India, Peru, Nigeria, Mexico, Singapore, Ethiopia, and China. The product of research sponsored by the International Labour Organization's Programme on Rural Women, Women and Development deals with the specifics of rural women's situations and sets a basis for formulating policies to give direction to their struggle. The nine chapters combine description with analysis, presenting women's work in the context of a world systems perspective. The book emphasizes that rural women, although they appear isolated in homes and villages, are in fact constantly influenced by the world's economic trends.
